I want to say THANK YOU as I am on disability and I can't afford to come into your office...You are giving us all a great gift for FREE. I am so grateful. I am going to start your exercises today. As you have said, some of us can only stand for just about 10 minutes. So I purchased on Ebay is a cane chair. I bring it with me if I have to walk about alot. It's about 27.00 (get the gold colored one, not the silver). THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I do live in Lincoln,NE.
Томара Покровская what kind of surgery does someone have for spinal stenosis? because i have been diagnosed with this and it does make it much easier to herniate with this problem, and i have herniated and had surgeries prior, plus i just found out today that i herniated again and will be having a "date" with a neurosurgeon within the week
What an excellent video on stretches and core strengthening for lumbar spinal stenosis. Everything was clearly explained and demonstrated. Great job Jake and Josh!
In June 2014 I had lumbar spinal fusion surgery of the L4 &L5 vertebrae due to a ruptured disk causing the 2 vertebrae to be sitting directly on top of each other crushing my left side sciatic nerve root along with multiple stenosis growths impinging the nerve which were removed from several additional vertebrae. During my stay 4 day post op stay in the hospital the only physical therapy i received was relearning to stand up and walk with the aid of a walker. For reasons not known to me, my surgeon never suggested or referred me to a physical therapist after my post of recovery to show me exercises to keep my lower back limber and to help me regain strength in my lower back and core muscles. The only exercise he allowed me was walking on a treadmill with a permanent weight bearing/lifting restriction of 10-15 lbs. I have been searching the internet since my surgery to find safe exercises I can do that wont damage my surgical site. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial video, now I know what I CAN do to rebuild my core muscle strength and stretching to help prevent pain from the regrowth of the stenosis', which unfortunately can, do and have begun to regrow. I do have one question, is it normal 2 yrs post surgery to still be able to feel the metal hardware inserted in my back? I have 2 rods, 8 screws, several 'cage' screws between the L4 & L5 as well as a large metal structure that wraps around my lumbar spine that spans several vertebrae to give me support for lateral movement (not sure what the device is called and haven't been able to find much of any info about it on the internet). Thank you for any answers you can provide me with.
I am amazed that some of these stretches don't cause severe pain. I just got flared up doing a hip rotator move for a physical functionality test. I had horrible pain from that and my doctor's tell me my pain is coming from lumbar stenosis.
Hi...Thanks so much for this video....I've been in acute pain with Spinal Stenosis for 8-9 months. For the past month I've been doing yoga breathing and stretching exercises but the ones you show sitting down will be of enormous benefit, I'm sure. Thanks again, Jim
Although yoga can be wonderful at times - it’s generic by its very nature - and hyper focused on flexibility in all directions. As you can see here - they focus on flexion stretches for spinal stenosis and not on back bends. Then utilise some aspects of muscular control.
I tried these exercises and got some relief. Let me see how long the relief lasts. I am an older person and overweight so the use of the chair better than floor exercises. Good advice when compared to the hype and superficiality of some other sites.
just been diagnosed with severe low back spinal stenosis per MRI. got on u-tube watched this very excellent video and tried all the positions. can't thank you enough!!!
I do exercises for my spinal stenosis that I’ve culled over the years on the internet. It’s been awhile since I have found some new ones. Thanks so much for sharing. I’m going to incorporate into my routine starting tomorrow. Someone in the comments mentioned these stretches and exercises should be avoided if you have bulging disk. My guess almost everyone with serious spinal stenosis has some evidence of bulging disk. Would appreciate you comments .
For those with spinal stenosis exercises like bending lower back help relieve pain, but they are not fundamental. In real life, you should strengthen pain related muscles in lower back, hips, lower body, etc. Strengthening related muscles could be also helpful for those with bulging disk. If you would like to be informed more, go watch my video here : ua-cam.com/video/CH0Y_Y_LyR8/v-deo.html
gee these are the only exercises that didn't really hurt my back that I have tried so far. After a chiropractor visit I jutted my S1 joint so bad I could not even walk for a month. I have very painful spinal stenosis for 20 years now. My inversion table provides some relief too.
Thank you for the video. In this video :Spinal Stenosis Exercises' . Do you mean all spinal stenosis, for example, Cervical Stenosis, Thoracic Stenosis, and Lumbar Stenosis?
Great exercises thank you. I don't have back pain but excruciating pain down my right leg from the hip from degeneration in the spine, central canal stenosis, compression of the L4 root nerve and degenerative facet joint causing mild spinal canal stenosis. Can I get relief from doing the chair yoga exercises.
I was sooo hoping for more.. so off to search for more... I do have spinal stenosis, catscans, mri's having the needles in my back every couple months (really in the spinal cord) but I am still getting stuck at night, I sleep for any length of time no matter how many pillows prop me up I end up waking up because of intense pain and I am stuck. I have to roll off my bed (mattress on my floor because my dog have stage 3 spinal cord damage and cannot be on anything high and before his injury he slept with me every night so to ensure he still can I put the mattress on the floor and have a little ramp for him to get on and off) I roll back and forth until I get enough pain out and enough feeling in that I can get my legs up underneath my belly and I just lie there with my arms out above my head... I lie there until I stop crying and I can feel my legs more... I can not keep doing this I need a fix.. I cannot take drugs I have balance issues, I cannot take many pills they seem to contain a lot of things I cannot take. So I am stuck with a lot of pain, a lot of tense muscles that are going into spams (the twisting exercise no way in hell I can do that will send my upper back into spams) and I am out looking for new things I have yet to try to get me unstuck at night.. I have done all of these, some I cannot do again... None are keeping me from being stuck.. how do you keep from being stuck from going to sleep!!!!
If lumbar spinal stenosis is caused by herniated disc, would you still recommend those stretches ? Flexing spine might make the disc reherniate and aggreviate the pain
I could not stand up and walk for a long time for almost 2 years... alhamdulillah with yoga especially the cobra pose its now all gone. I am normal again.
My name is Dennis super I really want to know something so bad is it a good idea to take prostate cancer medicine while you are having chemo radiation therapy done yes or no...
HELLO DOCTOR, ...have 60 years old,... I was diagnosed (by tomography)with a narrow lumbar canal,... and I liked your exercises., I ave been very tired when doing them but I feel that the annoyance of itching and burning in my trunk and back have diminished .. I do it twice a day, I have a good forecast in a short time, or I should increase the exercise, a thousand thanks for your answer !
I suspect you must mean that these exercises are good for mostly foraminal, or lateral stenosis? I have central stenosis - so is the rotational stretching good for that as well?
Inversion table for me stenosis L5s1 10x more effective ( From bed ridden 3 months to basic exercises here to inversion table). No money for one? Find a stair, towel pad double arm elbow on top of stairs hang on for long as you can. Front or back elbow to do more.
I have congenital stenosis at age 62 and have begun to experience some leg weakness. My doctor warned me this could happen, so I have begun to do exercises to help gain that addition 25% of movement space you said is possible. I began these exercises today and plan to do them everyday as soon as I get off work. They don't take that long, really, although I do put a lot of concentration on doing things as perfectly as I can. What would you say is a good amount of time I should give to these stretches? Is my decision to do them every day okay? Also, how many reps do you recommend for each of these? I hear 30 seconds and 3 reps on occasion, but I'd like to know what is the best length of time and how often I should repeat these. Twice a day eventually should I strive for? Or is this plenty to get started? Thanks for your help. I am a computer nut so I find my posture to be atrocious. I've begun to work on it too.
I have severe spinal stenosis, I am constantly in pain! Lifting my legs is almost impossible!! It feels like I am trying to lift them through cement.. What exercises can I do. I walk and hurt, but I refuse to give up!
it sounds like you should consult with a specialist, you might need a laminectomy. an operation to remove a layer of calcium that is crowding the space that surrounds the spinal cord, it is not minor surgery.
Thank you for these exercises. MRI said I had a herniated disk on the left and right side and spinal stenosis. I have burning nerve pain on my shin to my instep 24/7 for 5 weeks. Do have a exercises that would help reduce the pain? Thank you for any help.
Amazing! I just got thru being referred by my Health Care providers' Primary care Dr to a 'Rehab Center" for my SS and they did the same treatments as you ..Butt? They charge $300 Per 45 Min Session! After 3 Sessions, $900, I told them No thanks, you people charge More than Seeing my Dr. and Not worth it.. If my 4 Lower Disks are 50% Gone? No Exercise in the world is going to help it, now is there? Thank you and I will follow your Videos and be Happy to send you $50 for them !
I went that route at first, and found the only thing really improving through therapy, was the them lightening the load in my wallet. They were so angry and childish when I told them this also. Believe it or not, but CBD oil has helped so much with the arthritic pain. Ice packs, and chiropractic adjustments. I like this chair yoga though. I get too stiff in my joints and this seems to be a good way to loosen those areas.
Jake, I am not sure whether my condition is spinal stenosis maybe you can help me to diagnose. I had sciatica more than 20 years ago which resulted in my left foot dropped/unable to flex. I have learnt to overcome it by changing my walking ways to lifting my knee higher like 'marching. This year somewhere about few months ago I discovered that I have trouble walking distances, my legs feel weak only after a 15 mins. slow walk. And when I bend the body backwards, I do feel a sharp pain down in the buttocks. Thanks Jake.
I was dignosed by two out of three rheumatologists as having Ankylosing Spondylitis as I have severe back pain, psoriasis, and the HLA-B27 gene and B positive blood. Fifteen years later I find out I do NOT have AS, I have three herniated discs and a hemangioma. It seems I can do nothing right when it comes to getting doctors. Either way, I am in pain just about all the time now. I have lost many good years from this malady whatever it is. BB
I have recommended this video to several of my massage clients. In addition to those with Spinal Stenosis, the stretches would be beneficial to many who spends a lot of time sitting at a desk, computer or in a car.
Man my heart goes out to you.. young people with it. I'm 65 and was great a few mos ago.. keep up the exercises try to get off the meds .. trying to get a good nights sleep is a big problem for me ..but getting better. Best of luck keep at it with these exercises ..they do help.
I have severe multi level stenosis at C6 & C7, plus L4, L5, & S1. Which has caused some unbelievable nerve damage in my arm, hand, and legs. I use CBD oil to eliminate a lot of the arthritic pain in my hips and knees. Use ice packs when my neck & lower back really hurt. But would love to start doing chair yoga, to loosen up. I feel like the Tin man most days. And need to get all my joints moving again. I am 57 years old on disability. Too young to feel this dam old.
Hi joke I've been doing these exercises every day for about a year, off pain meds. They work, if you work on the movements. A simple solution to difficult situation. Cheers Thanks jake
very good and a nice constractions so people the dont speek english so well - can understand it!!! good job thx for sharing. best regardes from AUSTRIA/EUPOPA/neerly VIENNA
I have been in pain for 3 solid years and have just been told I have spinal stenosis and IM ONLY 13!! Just had a MRI and got the results. I might have to have sugury but dont know right now.
Ben .. watch the videos, do the stretches and exercises, get some natural ointments for the pains if you haven't already.. I'm starting to get better it's slow 3 years is a long time to be in pain..try not to have surgery only if you can't use your legs or your bladder. I'm sorry but think you can overcome it
@@mohanasharma352 Hi there! I have on a few occasions received radial nerve ablations which has definitely improved, though far from cured me. I could still never do the kinds of stretches in this video. In my case, I have Degenerative Disc Disease, which is really just a fancy way of saying I have a traumatic injury as I was very active in my younger days and did a lot of hard, dangerous construction work. I can walk and hike, just not too far. And walking uphill can cause me a lot of pain later in the day. I can exercise some using light weights, and use an elliptical for short periods. I can't jog. Posture is sooo important! My flare ups are not as bad as they used to be thanks to the ablation procedures. It sucks that I never really recovered from this, and that I can never have my old life back. I can never be the athlete I used to be. But that's life. We live and we slowly rot.
@@jassik9063 I actually have Degenerative Disc Disease, which was mistaken at the time for serious stenosis. After 5 years, I could never stretch the way he's bending forward at 1:57. That is some serious flexion that could really hurt someone. While I agree that some flexion (bending forward) is good for pretty much all back problems as it does some good decompression, these stretches are way too much for someone uncertain about the root cause of their pain. I wouldn't walk anywhere for weeks if I bent forward like that. I'd be in agony stuck in a chair on constant painkillers.
Wouldn't this be contraindicated if someone has a posterior disc protrusion? I was under he impression that bending forward was a no no. I have a herniated L4-L5 causing stenosis.
Thanks you, THE JAKE, i am sciatic patient from seven year and suffering from dull pain, this was initially just close to SI joint and then after two year it go in my buttock area (27/7 ...365 am..pm),, thousands exercises hit but wrong , i see this video and do first set of exercise my pain vanish suddenly , i feel cool in the area close SI joint .very good exercise. i want to confirm that my pain will fix or i have go further?
Jake, even if you have spinal stenosis affecting one leg, a it mostly does, should I do theses exercises equally on both sides of the body. Also, my pain is down the front of my leg from the groin area to the knee. I read somewhere that that is unusual. Any comments?
do you all have a link to also help our s 1 and a fractured L5. cant remember wat they said about my L4 caz no longer going to those doctors and what can we do if diasabled n are exercising some but are they anything we can sit on to help? thank u. helps alot
Thank you for the very good exercises that l do e very day. From Rome (ITALY) a question: can you give us other specific exercises on the L4 L5 S1 artrosic stenosis? Thank you very much in advance! RS
when i cross my right over to my left, it feels stuck. its not a stretch. it is stuck and has been for years. what can I do? apparently, the MRI states my most caudal motion is l4l5 due to transitional segment at l5s1 on the left side.
Jake, I have had not heard from you on the question I raised quite a while ago. Your early reply is much appreciated. Thank you.

How does one differentiate the pain between stenosis, spondylolisthesis and degenerative disc in order to know what to do to help?
Hi joke
I've been doing these exercises every day for about a year, off pain meds. They work, if you work on the movements. A simple solution to difficult situation. Cheers
Thanks jake

Difference between canal stenosis ND spinal stenosis...???
I have been in pain for 3 solid years and have just been told I have spinal stenosis and IM ONLY 13!! Just had a MRI and got the results. I might have to have sugury but dont know right now.
Ben .. watch the videos, do the stretches and exercises, get some natural ointments for the pains if you haven't already.. I'm starting to get better it's slow 3 years is a long time to be in pain..try not to have surgery only if you can't use your legs or your bladder. I'm sorry but think you can overcome it

Just one rep for each?
Some where it says forward bending is not good for spinal stenosis, your comments please ...
Why does l4-l5 diffuse disc bulge symptoms increase after treatment????
Thanks for this. Will pass this helpful info on to my dad
These are not to be done if you have a bulging disc in addition to stenosis which is often the case and has destroyed what was left of my life!
Hey,how's your back now?
Actually physiotherapist say don’t watch and do same exercise what ever they show Cause they don’t know your condition. That’s 100% true.
I am 28 year old I have same issue L4 L5 stenosis. And I don't want to operate. Any idea.! Or any experience please share to me
Thanks you, THE JAKE, i am sciatic patient from seven year and suffering from dull pain, this was initially just close to SI joint and then after two year it go in my buttock area (27/7 ...365 am..pm),, thousands exercises hit but wrong , i see this video and do first set of exercise my pain vanish suddenly , i feel cool in the area close SI joint .very good exercise. i want to confirm that my pain will fix or i have go further?
Jake, even if you have spinal stenosis affecting one leg, a it mostly does, should I do theses exercises equally on both sides of the body.
Also, my pain is down the front of my leg from the groin area to the knee. I read somewhere that that is unusual. Any comments?

These don’t look good for lumbar spinal stenosis. The guy needs to comment.
