I started having difficulty walking in 2016. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in 2020. Over that period I gained a lot of weight. For the last two years I’ve weighed 260 lbs. On top of that I have severe COPD. I finally started working with a Physical Therapist. In 2016 I spent my 62nd birthday in the hospital and died 5 times over 24 hrs. I left the hospital 21 days later with a dual stage pacemaker/ defibrillator. My biggest regret is being a procrastinator. If I could offer any advice I would say don’t wait until tomorrow to do what you can do today.
I have been suffering from spinal stenosis and disc herniation for the last ten years I have started physiopherapy for the last ne and half years it's good that I have seen your video I think it will try t some of these exercises thanks a lot Justine Kigongo from Uganda

This is so funny to me. I found all of these exercises by myself, because it was what felt like it helped the most. Genuinely happy to get them validated. From my own experience, do these exercises. They all give you massive amounts of relief and overtime it will reduce the pain you have significantly.
My low back is a mess with degenerate discs, spinal stenosis. Pain going down the leg. Sometimes I was reduced to crawling around the house. Cortisone injections don't work anymore.
But radio frequency ablation has helped immensely--about 80% less pain. Some days I'm actually pain free. And it has enabled me to cut way down on the use of ibuprofen. The procedure lasts me about eight months, and there's no limit to the times you can have it done.
Now I can exercise. Thank you so much for the great videos.

Sorry, I didn’t get (or see) your reply until now.
I suppose by now you have Googled RFA (Radio Frequency ablation) and found out more information, but just in case, I can give only a layman’s description. In my case it’s done at a pain clinic. Aside from the hour or so of filling out paperwork and waiting, the procedure only takes about 15-20 minutes. You lay on your back and after prepping you, they stick, what I assume is a needle-like electrode into your spine. (again, in my case, about 8-10 times and places. They use an imaging device to get exact placement. As they explained it, the procedure “burns” the specific nerves that are causing the pain, thus, deadening them for a time until they restore themselves. (In my case it lasts 8-9 months before the pain returns. It takes about 3 weeks before the treatment takes effect. You are given the option of sedation or no sedation. You definitely want sedation and, as with other procedures, you have to be sure to eat nothing after midnight the night before. I forgot and ate breakfast and had it without sedation. Never again! With sedation, I feel only a slight prick; without it, I came up off the table! With sedation, you will need a driver to take you home. The procedure can be repeated indefinitely.
If it’s an option for you, I definitely recommend it.

First, I do have spinal stenosis, I just found out. This is the best summary I've ever heard of the spine and how the vertebrae, discs, and facet joints work as a team. It didnt ever click for me that the facet joints were the place where the vertbrae actually connected to each other. And what a straightforward concise explanation of the three things that go "wrong" that may lead to spinal stenosis - discs thinning, arthritis in facet joints, and thickenings, which then can compress nerves exiting the spinal column and cause pain. But the exercises: because of bad hips, I can't do the first two. The third one looks like it is bad for spondolysthesis. I am not going to do that twisting. It's what triggered an agonizing long long long bout of sciatica, the kind where you moan and pray out loud for hours at a time, and when its not that bad, it's still very bad. I was helpless, hopeless, trapped, and utterly debilitated, with recovery creeping only slowly, until I got an epidural cortisone injection.
Once again thank you so much , I am closer to 69 and my lower back and leg pain has been gradually increasing since late 40’s. I am very flexible since childhood and now I feel unstable walking and sitting . Laying flat is relief now I will add these 3 into that time.

I had LSS (lumbar spinal stenosis) and was barely able to walk. Finally, my doctor performed a procedure on my back called M.I.L.D. or minimally Invasive lumbar decompression. After healing and physical therapy I am back to 95% normal six months post procedure and intend on returning to 100% after a year. I don't know why your doctors don't tell you about this. It is 100% covered by Medicare. Without it I would have ended up in a wheelchair but now I'm returning to normal life. Do look into this because I know the pain and hopelessness you all are feeling.
Won't it have to be repeated in 5 years?
4.27 I found these exercises very helpful. and not too difficult to do. I have had numerous operations throùgh Osteo arthritis , from Lamenectomy to fusion's. two operations to put in plate and screws. yes degenerative spine. Now 15 years on at the age of 81 years I am fighting to keep going . yes these exercises will definitely help. No more surgery.

I've been suffering for a long time. I am a retired Nurse, all the lifting, transferring, for close to 30 years, has made my back, and shoulders very painful. Had X-rays etc., done, 3 years later, finally got to see a surgeon. He mentioned steel rods, i said no surgery. How does 3 year old ex-rays, qualify for a diagnoses? I think your Channel is brilliant.

Sitting in a recliner reclined with pillows place against my lower back, Finally released my sciatic nerve and brought back feeling and pain relief to the back of my calf and foot.

The best thing you can do for stenosis, or any other inflammatory condition, is to stop eating animal-based foods. All animal products cause inflammation, whereas whole plant foods do the opposite. They are anti-inflammatory. I stopped the progression of stenosis in my neck and reversed the arthritis in my hips and hands about 8 years ago by adopting a healthy plant based diet. This is the result you can expect by fixing what you eat.
I have this problem, only my symptoms are not the same. I was in a car accident, and then had this happen to me, along with another spinal injury. I was told, that spinal stenosis, was my main problem. Only for me, sitting was something that made it worse. I would try to stand, and walk around as much as possible. Then, after 20 years, I started walking excessively. After 3 months,, my chronic lower back pain went away ! And for some reason or other, the harder the surface I sit on, will determine my level of pain. I'm guessing, because of the car accident I was in, it determined which vertebra was effected. So you need to also determine that, then decide which exercises will help.

I am extremely thankful to you for this great video. I' m 75 and been just diagnosed with spinal stenosis. I go for a brisk walk every evening; the first 25 minutes are painless;however, the next 20 minutes or so are quite painful. I 'll do the exercises advocated by you regularly,so that over a period of time the pain that occurs in my leg diminishes.

Unfortunately I've had this for 20 years and i actually walk bent over. When i try to stand up, after 5 to 10 minutes i start shaking, so therefore the only way to stop this is to sit down or touch my toes. This is how i live I've tried everything. I don't allow this to hinder my gardening i just make ajustments when necessary. I also have arthritis in me knees, i am 70 years old, so i have endured all this for 20 years.
God bless you. I’ve been dealing with same as well as arthritis in knees for 4 years now. I’m 51 in two weeks. I’m struggling with whether or not to have surgery. I’m so frightened it will fail and I’ll end up worse than now. Blessings.

I’ve endured spine separation from my pelvic bone and hip when I was 11 years old. Due to high impact speeding burning rubber with white billowing smoking tire then peeling out over my lower spine.
I have three major high impact head injuries and reverse neck -7 degrees with upper neck and lower spine Scoliosis and stenosis. Injuries were at age 1 1/2 and 3 and another one at age 21ish.
A doctor insisted I was born with scoliosis. Another doctor stated I’ll be in a wheelchair.
It’s been a lifetime of severe nerve damage and constant pain and bone on bone pinched nerves and hating pain. It’s been my normal.

I live in South Africa, and recently turned 73. I am fortunately quite healthy, but have had back issues since my early teens, due to a car accident when I was 13. After my husband passed away in 2017, I sold our house, and have relocated twice in the interim. I have flexible rods in my back, after 3 successive fusion surgeries over a period of about 25 years. I think that the way I packed and unpacked boxes for my moves, has caused my spine to be quite bent over. Now watching your video, I am not sure if I have stenosis, or whether the rods in my back may be curved due to the way I spent many weeks, on my own, packing, unpacking and often, also lifting heavy pieces! I certainly am not in the position now to go on another wild back surgery ride - so I am trying your advice, having watched several of your very helpful videos. Thank you!

Thanks so much. I was just diagnosed with spinal stenosis. I tried the 3 exercises and feel much better. I have PT sessions set up but they are over a month away. Your 3 stretches gave me relief immediately and will help me while I wait.

I have the same problem. Terribly pain!
After doing the 3rd exercise in that position, try raising your buttocks off the bed an inch, pushing your feet into the bed ever so slightly.
It helps the periformis which is related to the sciatica.
Try one very gently.
I got this at 61 (now 74) confirmed with a CT. I have to say I do not have the discomfort I had for the first few years. If I lifted a heavy bag I would have pain for hours and standing for more than a few minutes also caused pain. I had to beg for a special chair at work. I don't get the discomfort any more just very occasional left side leg pain if I overdo household chores

Thank you for the very clear explanation of the causes of spinal stenosis. The exercises you recommend would help suffers, but there is another one that I have found unbelievaby helpful for this condition. Unlike the ones you recommend here it involves bending your back in the opposite direction.
A few years ago I developed drop foot, which is caused by spinal stenosis, and I allieviated it with some foot exercises to a tolerable level. Then last year my condition worsened and I started to get really severe sciatica type pains which limited my mobility a lot. I've done yoga postures for a long time and after hearing me complain about stenosis yet again my son asked if I'd tried the cobra. I'd not done this posture since a stomach operation many years ago which left scar tissue which was painful to stretch at that time. 30 years later it was not painful to stretch and I started doing this simple yoga posture for about 4 mins per day. After a couple of weeks I could feel a distinct improvement and in less than 1 month the improvement was incredible. The pain virtually disappeared and my mobilty returned to near normal.
It's not an instant cure, and you will need to keep at it for a few weeks, but in my experience it works. You just lie on your stomach on the floor and raise your head supporting your upper body on your elbows (I get a painless click when my spine resumes its correct position). Count 4 to breathe in, hold for 10, and exhale for 6. 20 seocnds or so in total. Do that 10 times. Yoga experts do a more advanced version of this posture by supporting themselves on their hands with straight arms, but it's not necessary to go that far.

I believe the cobra exercise you mentioned is called Mckenzie exercise and I thought that is used to help people with disc protrusion or bulging disc which is the opposite of stenosis. I was told that people with stenosis should not do the cobra exercise. They should do the exercises shown in this video.
Unfortunately , the cobra position worsened my stenosis symptoms.

So very helpful. I’ve been dealing with back pain for over 20 years. At 68 I am still looking for enter better ways to relieve the chronic low back pain. I find swimming helps but once you’re on a hard surface the pain is nagging again. Massage and gentle stretching helps.

This video actually diagnosed my spinal stenosis, which my heart specialist had suspected. Mine starts off with pins and needles in both of my feet and sometimes I stagger because I can't feel them. It can disappear if I keep on walking and will sometimes go if I just stand still. I thought it was "double sciatica" which I suppose it is! I will give these exercises a go. I've always been amused that I can cycle as far as I want, jog or run pain free also, but standing or walking brings it on. This video explains why! Many thanks for posting, very clear and easy to understand.

That first exercise I have been instinctively doing for many years. If I have to stand waiting or walk slow I have to do this exercise to stretch myself out. The trouble is that people usually think I am drunk or about to throw up which can be very embarrassing. Perhaps I need a sign that says I’m fine just stretching!
I like the first two. The third one is uncomfortable for me. I get the most relief from pelvic tilts but will add the first two! Thank you.

I have Lower Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and I am very anxious to try these exercises. I have been getting injections for pain which sometimes, but not always, help. Most recently I was prescribed medication which I refrain from taking because of the side effects. I am going to try these exercises and see if I can receive relief from my pain. Thank you very much. You help me understand the condition better and your exercises make sense and are simple to remember.

Over the age of 65🙄. I was diagnosed at 38. I’m now 41. Pain level at worst is a 3. Main problem I have is core and lower back weakness. Glad I found out early in order to be proactive.

So the exercices for the bulging disc are bad for the stenosis and the other way around. What if you have both?

Turned 66, wrenched a knee, COVID , ended up seeing a cardiologist, bunch of tests, in the notes says beginning stenosis. For the last 3 months have been having weak legs- stiff and painful lower back- walk like a drunken sailor, and tingling zaps down legs and arms. Guess what? My chiropractor said ya, something nerve wise is going on....so i searched UA-cam on the symptoms and up popped stenosis. The cherry on top is i have always been a very limber bendable person, also obese. Triple threat!! Great exercises.

Hi does she have stenosis, I have it I was diagnosed at 39 I'm 43 now I can't stand for very long and was hospitalised last week they thought I had ces, I'm now in so much pain on permanent disability and on paracetamol, tramadol and morphine, I'm very limited and I have very young children I don't know where my life is going to be if I'm in this much pain now a few years from now any advice from anyone

I have been doing these exercises for a few years. I didn't know why but it felt so much better . I have been dealing with back pain for forty years, after an 8 jury. 6 years ago I was T-boned in my vehicle. It wasn't until this year I was diagnosed with, my original injury, bone spurs, arthritis, compression of L5 to L2 and spinal stenosis. I was sent to physical therapy and found out, I will never do that again. I had bilateral ablation 3 days ago. I'm not sure if it is helping or not. I still have very lower back pain.
I will try these exercises from tomorrow.

What about walking with Spinal Stenosis? (I watched one of your videos earlier today on exercises for sciatica pain and you mentioned walking. I had given up walking because of the pain. )

Very easy to follow. A few repeats before tackling errands for the day is helpful. I wonder if you have an opinion for the forward lean moves for those with osteoporosis as well as stenosis. But doing more of the lying down ones for now. 🎉
People with osteo in the spine must avoid all flexion moves, except for hip hinging (back is straight and you bend at the hips in a hinge movement. Cant believe he is demonstrating these without cautionary advice for those with spinal osteoporosis. Definitely don’t do these first 2 exercises shown if you’ve had a vertebral fracture. The third exercise should be okay so long as you don’t force the move and work your way up to more extensive movement. Most danger is the front of the vertebra which can collapse.

What would you recommend for somebody with stenosis plus 2 disc bulges? For disc bulge its often recommended to do extension exercises and avoid flexion, and for stenosis the advice is do flexion and avoid extension. So if you have both conditions, which exercises can one perform without aggravating one of the conditions.
That exactly what I am trying to look desperately for with no success, all advice it's either that or this. L4 l5 broad bulge causing mild stenosis (sciatic symptoms worse on my right) unable to sit without increasing pain and unable to fully extend either. I'm so lost 😞😭 lying down flat (bend knees) not doing anything like a vegetable is my only relief

Good informative video, i shall try these exercises. I have been doing the opposite exercises, that is leaning back and and found it very painfull. Leaning forward is so much better. But still have a stiffness bending forward. Great instructions on the video and will certainly try them out.
I viewed the three exercises you mentioned. I enjoyed watching them. They are to watch. I have not practiced them yet. I will create a habit of doing them on daily basis and see the results. I will get back to you and give you my feedback.

Is cycling a good sport / exercise for spinal stenosis?
I would also like to know how to exercise with a disc bulge and spinal stenosis. This does not cause pain but severe leg weakness and I feel like I’m going to fall over as there is no stability in my lower body when walking.
I have been using these exercises for severe lumbar stenosis. These exercises are very helpful to understand how to relieve the pressure on the cauda equina - "horses' tail" or that bundle of nerves below L1.
I asked my orthopedist to measure the anterior-posterior diameter of the thecal sac at L4-L5. Stenosis is anything less than 10 mm. My measurement was only 5.4mm. The orthopedist said that I have "very severe lumbar spinal stenosis."
I gave a lumbar epidural steroid injection scheduled. I decided to try out the MILD procedure. It is a minimally invasive lumbar decompression of the ligamentum flavum. It takes about an hour.
Google "Mild procedure." Making just a little more room helps those nerves get circulating cerebral spinal fluid and blood supply to prevent neurogenic claudication. You can greatly increase your walking distance and standing times. It's done by pain management physicians. Risks are similar to those of lumbar steroid epifural injections.
I hope you come back to this post and give us an update on your results after your procedure.
@Kr hunt I will have the ESI tomorrow and the MILD procedure in June.
I have a foraminal stenosis on the right at L4-L5 but it isn't "very severe" like the 5.4mm AP diameter of the thecal sac at L4-L5. Debulking the ligamentum flavum and the lateral recesses of the central canal often provides a little extra room to prevent neurogenic claudication.
We shall see.

@krhunt1014 MILD is just that - a millimeter or two of extra space is worth it. But it doesn't totally reverse the stenosis. There is central stenosis, lateral stenosis, and foraminal stenosis. Cutting back the ligamentum flavum - big yellow ligament - makes more space in central and lateral stenosis.
Decompression helps. Stabilization can be achieved with a Minuteman minimally-invasive device insertion. MILD can be repeated every year, if necessary.
I swim, bike, hike, lift weights, and do pilates. Long distance walking and prolonged standing are improved.

Thank you very much. I just did these and experienced relief. Wow! One question. I have heard-I forget from whom-that it is not good to stretch the spine immediately after waking up in the morning. The thinking was that the spine is already relaxed and "opened" from sleep. One hour after waking was recommended. So: how about these exercises you introduce here? Is it okay to do them right after getting out of bed? Thanks again.

I have spinal stenosis and this is very helpful! But are they okay to do ''even if you need surgery for your hip?''
I have severe arthritis in the hips and some other joints, although it is 'osteo', not Rheumatoid, but very painful anyway. Had other hip done before and have a knee to go, but had one done and a few spinal surgeries, and am sick of it all. But do think the ones done already, are a little bit better, but will not be sure so it seems until all is done?
Just wondered about doing them if hip surgery is needed. I am careful doing them and stop when it hurts.
Used to dance all the time and did from three yrs old, until into 20's did, tap, Jazz, ballet and baton, and also taught dancing.
Now it is killing me, as I want so much to dance even at home, as it is important as it brings me joy!
Nothing else works. Not Tai Chi not Yoga. I want dancing. Might need to somehow give in, but trying hard to hold onto 'hope.'
Tap may be out though, as of the joints and the pounding on them. (However, one can explain it? lol )
So must be sensible. But the rest may work, to a degree. For at home anyway,

Guess it is a blessing, for those who never get arthritis, or any motor skill disease, that prevents movements. No one may know until they lose that ability, to do as they did before, I guess?

Are these safe if you have stenosis, anterolisthesis, bulging disc, disc desiccation, severe bilateral foraminal stenosis and hypertrophic facet arthropathy. And who knows what else as I don't understand much but am I screwed? Is surgery the only way to fix all this?
