Common Causes of South Metro's Destructive Home Fires

- Some of the most destructive home fires that SMFR responds to often start on the outside of a house or inside the garage. Unfortunately, reckless use or improperly discarded fireworks have ignited homes in our community every year. You can help prevent those and other common fires by taking some simple steps.
Keep sources of heat, sparks, or flames away from combustible material.
Never use fireworks or barbecues inside a garage or structure.
Soak fireworks in a non-combustible container overnight, away from anything than can burn.
Properly discard oily rags in non-combustible, airtight containers.
SMFR wishes you a safe and enjoyable Summer! If you have questions, please let us know.
I can’t remember if you have ever done a video on proper usage of fire extinguishers on your channel but it might be worth it to show how effective they can be and the dangers of improper use like being in an enclosed room when firing one off. I spent 15 years as a volunteer industrial fire fighter at my work place and it is amazing at how many people don’t know how to properly use these it may not stop a fire but used right it can slowdown a fire greatly.
I second this. Many people don't know how to use one, and/or have never seen one used before. I think it would be a valuable video to have.
Thanks for your suggestion, we haven't done a video like that yet.
Good reminder Eric, You all stay safe out there.
Very good tips on how to prevent fires from happening
Have you ever considered having everyone wear strobe lights, especially when entering a structure? So that it's easier to see each other in order to communicate and if someone goes down to rescue them. In my unit in the Army we used to wear an IR/night vision patch for that reason.
Excellent educational video for the public!!
Can you please make more of the medic videos they are so awesome to watch
Im so curious about the Tiller!
love the firefighter stash lol
This kind of content is fantastic, should definitely do more of these! Do you guys do what our firefighters here in the UK do and go into schools and teach about fire safety, hazards, fireworks especially (still mentally scarred for life from that presentation lmao, they did not hold back), that kinda thing? We had at least annual presentations by active serving firefighters that would come in and teach about fire safety, we even had a class trip to a nearby fire station where they did this "blackout room" I think it was called, they turn off all the lights, play sounds of fire crackling etc and show you how to safely navigate a blacked-out room in the event of a fire, how to check door handles correctly etc so just curious if you guys do that sorta thing as well!
Not sure what South Metro does, but at least when I was in grade school we always had the fire department come every October for fire prevention month. They would talk about fires, car accidents, have demonstrations, tours of the fire house and so on. I would assume South Metro does something like this. Granted this was decades ago I was that young, but I remember it vividly while typing this.
Thank you! South Metro has a team of Community Risk Reduction Specialists who visit schools, assisted living facilities, home owners associations, community events etc. and provide life safety education.
And just like that... Two homes in Parker burnt last night due to fireworks disposed wrong. Almost like Eric knew this would happen.
First

They need more subscribers

Happy 4th of July my birthday was last Saturday Kim Connor Eric and Lauren miss you my friends
Quick question, what kind of fire helmet do you wear?
Eric wears a Cairns N5A.
Where are you guys based in Colorado?
SMFR Headquarters is located in Centennial, just south of Denver. South Metro protects 287 square miles of Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson Counties.
When’s next video friday or Saturday?
Do PIO's have actual ranks?
Typically PIO can be the rank of lieutenant or battalion chief, it depends on the department.
Adding to that, PIO is a " role" per say within the fire dept. its basically a job with title.
At South Metro, PIO's don't hold line officer ranks.
When will another fire medics be out
quick question

The tree that was used in the burn demo was natural.
