- EP. 1214 - This is NOT the future - Jon Prosser reacts to Apple Vision Pro
After claiming Apple Vision Pro would be the next iPhone moment, I think we need to take a closer look...
FPT is the Apple of Tech youtubers
Late to the party, but shared the most wisdom
He's entertaining at times, but nowhere near the Apple of tech.
Yes
😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 Lol
@mickay1970because he’s name is also Jon 😒
@Jaquan Kelsor but it was apple that made a computer with a mouse and a gui first
If the new iPhone was able to create these 3D photos (maybe not that easy since it has no stereo camera but from 3 different lenses and a lidar it might be possible) and you could watch them on the headset it wouldn’t be as dystopian
Can you explain to me what it means to be dystopian? The google definition doesn’t help me understand how everybody uses it
@@LW62_Gaming everything new is dystopian
@@LW62_Gaming If you have watched “Ready player one” that’s dystopian. In this case watching the dad wear this headset while doing normal things with his kids just feels wrong.
I see them doing this with the iPhone Ultra
Dystopian is basically the concept of a future where humans are so disconnected from nature and each other while being given the feeling of those things from artificial things and technology. Think blade runner or ready player one
This is a weird take really, and I am far from an Apple fanboy. Apple had a choice to make: release the most compelling headset they can now with technology available today, or release a device in a much smaller form factor several years from now (at least 6-7 years). Doing the latter is risky because it allows the competition time to capture the market and build an ecosystem which will be harder to compete against. This is not like the iPhone where Apple took everyone by surprise and no one saw it coming. That's not gonna happen here. Everyone knows where AR/VR is headed: a pair of glasses that you can wear all day that is powerful enough to deliver a useful experience. That's what every other player is working towards. So the earlier Apple puts out a product they can iterate on the better for them.
Apple will find trouble competing against other ecosystems? That's literally the opposite of what they do.
This is not really about the form factor or size of the headset. It's also barely limited by the technology available today. Technologically, this is a headset that has barely any compromises. It's about their vision what you can do and what you gonna do with the device. They have barely shown novel or compelling use cases. They have mostly shown 2D interfaces. Aka "iPad for the face". Which is completly bollock since for that you don't have to wear a $3.5k headset.
@@scientia8442 Building hardware capable of doing spacial computing likely kept them busy enough. Like the original iphone, IOS evolved over the years to become more and more capable. The same will be true for vision OS. They already have frameworks that enable the use of 3d interaction. Also, videos likely don't even do the spacial aspects of the design justice, since we are viewing it on a 2d display.
@@scientia8442 he made several references to the headset size in the video and suggested they should not have released it until they had the perfect device. That's what I'm responding to. I agree they should have shown more use cases in their presentation but still, it's not hard for developers and consumers to imagine more use cases for such a powerful device.
I guess the point he tries to make in the video is that if it were glasses form factor / see-through AR, this would have been an enormous achievement. There it's much more common to deal with 2D interfaces and overlays etc. But since it's a full blown headset, the capabilities and possibilties are pretty much unconstrained. To name a few examples. Many rumored that Apple would offer some kind of mixed-reality or virtual reaity fitness service. They were seemingly also interested to buy Within/Supernatural. A few years ago, they also acquired NextVR. So what I expected they would show is something like live and on-demand concerts and events, in-headset. Can be that all this is still to come. But as a first showing, it's rather disappointing.
I am a simple guy. I see FPT, I watch.
Then I take a shit
Jon’s analysis focused primarily on how the Vision Pro creates a less ideal experience than social interaction in real life. But I don’t think even Apple would dispute this truism. The question is: does Vision Pro potentially offer a better alternative to our current technology when people CAN’T be together?
Take, for instance, a scenario where a parent is away on a business trip but wishes to attend their child's recital. If they can’t return home due to a canceled flight, they would prefer to watch the performance streamed, immersively, in real-time through their spouse's AR headset. This way, they can share the moment with their loved one, even from a distance. The spouse in the audience also gets to be more present at the recital without holding a video camera or smartphone. Hence, the question arises - is spatial reality computing a technology that can bridge the gap between people, akin to letters, phone calls, and FaceTime?
Or imagine a professional wedding photographer offering to capture their client’s wedding in immersive spatial video. Attendees who couldn’t attend (or the married couple themselves later after the fog of the big day) would appreciate the opportunity to watch the ceremony in a more immersive and realistic spatial video versus the current limits of web streaming or 2D video capture.
There are many uses cases for this technology to change the way we socialize when we are not in the same space. To paraphrase the US President, don’t compare it to the ideal, compare it to the alternative.
Essept, Apple showed this when people WERE together...
Which US president?
Ah yes 3500 dollars to experience a missed wedding
FPT lost his touch on this one. He is wrong.
Also, i think people are COMPLETELY blowing the dad wearing VP at his daughter's bday out of proportion. As a parent, can i not capture a MOMENT at my childs bday with them on???? No parent is gonna wear it for the ENTIRE damn time at the party. For me, i would put them on just to capture a 30 second moment JUST to have the experience of looking back at that moment and feeling like i'm there again, and then take it off. It DOESN'T mean i'm capturing a SUPER important moment like blowing out candles or something, but a random playful moment, yes.
I can’t say I agree here. People aren’t realising this is the step one into a NEW idea. You can’t do as Jon says and having version 5 be what Tim’s vision is and have it when YOU want it. That’s the whole point. Apple realised that by waiting for Tim’s idea to become a reality, you really have to make a start. Otherwise it’s too late. This product is here to save the dying reality market. So developers can catch on, and eventually make this product and it’s successors INTO Tim’s VISION. That’s why this product exists. It’s really that simple. It’s Apple jumping in before it’s too late. And with the product I’ve seen, I’m more than confident they pulled it off. So I massively disagree with this opinion.
Unless you can convince the average consumer that wearing this for long periods is normal and not foolish looking, I don't see this market being saved. It'll be nothing more than a rich person's toy.
I agree with what you're saying. Good video but way to early to call.
Today isnt the environment to make a good impression this coming from an apple leaker lol😅.
Tim Apple (he he) is doing two things here. He believes the next stage of computing is no device or one on your face. They have to start understanding usage. That was way easier with an iPhone, apple watch. Second the cost of components must be refined and come down in price. To do that they need the device in production.
There probably is trepidation at apple around the device. But they can't keep secrets. Think of this as the Apple one. Rouch and ready looking for an audience. This is the same. It will get refined and find it's place. The end game will be glasses through extreme miniaturisation.
You missed his point 🤦🏽♂️. Everything you said is correct but that wasn’t what the video was. He wasn’t upset about the timing or that the product wasn’t developed enough, it was that Apple failed to sell it. They have lots of ideas but their vision fell away from the Apple vision which is connecting with others. Jon is AGREEING that this product is game changing and a beautiful piece of tech! HOWEVER Apple failed to do what Apple was best at…MARKETING. Like he said, there’s only one chance to give a first impression and that was it.
@@JohnMarston1876I also see you point, but maybe my point intertwines with his. Maybe Apple can sell it, but that selling vision isn’t how they want it yet. So this is the very foundation. Remember, it wasn’t Apple that made the iPhone successful, it was developers! The App Store IS the iPhones fame. Then Apple built around that idea of what people want. THIS is just Apple making the most high tech thing, and seeing what WE make of it. That will be its premise. Just like the iPhone and the Apple Watch. Remember how they sold Apple Watch 1 as a fashion piece? That failed, developers and the public turned it into what it’s now. A super successful heath and fitness timepiece.
Exactly, how do people expect developers to write software for the future of AR without first having a device to develop on? This is for developing software at this point so that the second generation that will smaller and more affordable will actually have experiences for the general public to experience.
I’m glad to see a different take on this product but I am missing what you thought this was going to be. I’d love to see a follow up video explaining what you were expecting with this product and how you see it fitting into people’s lives. I’m not trolling. I’m truly interested. Until the technology can support glasses that actually look like real glasses and do the same things, I actually think this is as good as you can get right now. At this point in where we are with tech I don’t think there is another option. I think that at the current place we are at, this is absolutely a product that people will use by themselves… alone… in their homes. Marketing it as something that you would wear to a birthday party is pretty silly and I think that was really stupid (although I’m sure some rich dads will definitely do this). And I’d never wear this silly sh*t in front of other people. Buuuut I think it’s good that they are stepping into it when they are so that the industry can learn and move forward. I really hope you follow up with what you thought this was going to be… cause if I listen back to your podcasts you say you wanted anime eyes on the screen and I don’t believe that was actually your vision of where this is going. I know you’re disappointed and I’m glad someone is cause most reviews are only positive. But I really want to know exactly what your expectations were and what you thought could be done with current technology. I think conversations like this are important to help move things forward :)
yes. exactly. this is what i also wanted to say
Same.
He’s just doing it to get the views. 😂
You're right...I'm no apple fan boy, but his review is trash...he's just trying to be a contrarian. He needs to be Told what it's for..smh...he lacks imagination....and , no, daddy won't wear the headset for the whole party, it's just like taking a short video on your phone...And his voice is irritating AF
Exactly, he missed the point. This product is like “here, go play with these alone while we work on what we know you want/need ( magic glasses that allow you to live your life around others normally)”. Give it 10 years or so and we’ll see Apple and Ray-Ban partnership or something like that.
For the capturing video thing. I feel it's no different than a phone or video camera or a dslr type. If youre capturing memories on video or photo/film then everyone elses memory of you would be behind the camera, no matter what. This just changes the camera you remember being used. The memory isn't the person taking the video, but the memory being "filmed."
Exactly! I remember my dad with a giant camera in front of his face during my early birthdays and holidays.
The camera is literally on your face. It seems like you're not there. You can't see your eyes.
@@efrenr81 you wear it for 2 minutes and put it away. Looks goofy but it's just a tool 🤷🏾♂️
@@ryangibson7192 This was the exact experience I was thinking of when he was making the comment. Like...your dad didnt rock the JVC camera back in the day? That thing took up more than his face. I didnt care as a kid then, nor have any emotional scarring from it, which seems to be suggested here.
@@KeangoDLukeit’s a tool that’s LITTERALLY more goofy then a camcorder for taking a quick video. A cellphone comes out you pocket, takes the video, goes back. A camcorder could be sat down and casually picked up for in the moment video and put back down or in it’s case or whatever. Think about putting on goggles, forget the VR part. Then add in going to turning on the camera app or whatever. Before you can even start recording. I could see film using this, but not the family ‘let me grab a video real quick’ moment.
“All they’ve shown me is why I don’t” is an appreciated take regarding the keynote. After watching all the press and UA-camr reaction of their hands on experience, it made me wonder why the keynote didn’t feature some of the things people raved about (like really blown away). There is clear distinction between people who used it and those that just watched the keynote. Ultimately, I am excited about the product and its future, odd keynote choices aside.
Also, I’m convinced you’ll be able to shoot video for vision pro on the iPhone vs wearing goggles at your kids party. They had to show it could be done and why (and it was weird) but it makes so much sense for an unreleased feature to come at some point.
Here’s what makes me think [a future version of] this product will be huge: when they showed display mirroring. It’s not there yet, but it’s only natural that a future version of this product will support not just showing one virtual Mac display, but multiple. And if this one product can replace a multiple display setup for many users, that’s already going to be big for many people. But who’s to say a future version will even need a Mac to do that? This seems much more capable of eventually replacing the Mac than the iPad does, since it already has a windowing system that’s built into the foundation; not something that feels like a hacky, awkward addition. Imagine opening Photoshop on this thing and then walking right up to your canvas and painting directly onto it with your hands. A giant, life-size canvas is way better than a Wacom tablet. Hell, even boring little apps like home inventory apps suddenly feel more useful if you can walk around looking at things, taking pics of them and immediately adding metadata, filing them away. There are a ton of use cases I’m excited to see this class of products enable.
if they can do that, it would be awesome, ngl
Haptics would be necessary, it’s very awkward to draw on something imaginary without feedback
That's exactly the kind of applications that developers will create, but the developers actually need the hardware first before they can make the software, and that is what people are missing, this product right now is for developers and industry, so they can make the software that will sell the second generation of this hardware to the general public.
Its packed with an M2, so with a real keyboard (or REALLY good haptic gloves) it could replace a laptop for some use cases.
I get the impression that this product is already very close to “there”. Specifically with respect to replacing multi-monitor setups: they’ve already demonstrated multiple windows running, and there is no technical reason why those windows couldn’t be multiple monitors. I’ll add to that, if the pass-through is as good as it looks (and really, that’s make or break for this thing) then using hardware keyboards/other peripherals won’t be a problem.
Episodes like this, the passionate real talk, are why I love your show. This episode and the episode about accessibility features like personal voice are easily some of my favorites. You seem to understand the impact of Apple's products better than most UA-camrs. Excellent episode, I hope Apple execs see it and listen to what you said. Thanks for doing what you do, keep up the good work.
NO! HE UNDERSTANDS TALKING DOWN ON APPLE WILL GET HIM
VIEWS. TALKING TRASH ABOUT APPLE GETS VIEWS. HE ALSO UNDERSTANDS THIS IS A FIRST GEN PRODUCT. LATER DOWN THE ROAD VISION PRO WILL DROP ON PRICE AND GETS BETTER. Fuck this dude
I’m curious tho. What were you expecting? Being so sure prior to the event that this thing was going to be the next iPhone and everything you mentioned and then you were disappointed…what is it you were actually expecting it to be and look like?
I love your take on this, I do agree that the way they put things forward was not the most inventive Apple have ever been. However, having used headsets for awhile I do understand how difficult it is to try and explain to someone who has never used one exactly how involved you can be within the virtual experience. And with the Apple vision pro the experience is even more so as well as you being able to exit that experience, at least in part to talk to someone or communicate with other people.
Never has Apple had a product that can’t be easily understood in its use. If you can remember, never having the Internet which I can and someone then showing you how useful the Internet could be, if you work in an office and you never had a local network how changing it could be without having experienced it it’s similar.
I think the more of these get into peoples hands, the more individuals can experience it the faster it will take off, the key to this is going to be multiple user logins, and if it doesn’t have that, then it could be more of an uphill battle for them
I think Apple would totally agree to you, and will try to solve all of these things in the future. I think their vision was a pair of sunglasses that wouldn't at all separate you from others. But they didn't manage to put the tech they wanted in a form factor that small and Tim wanted to release it before he retires. The more human version of the Vision Pro will come in a few years.
but you only get to introduce "spatial computing" once though.
Lmao they aren't "solving" anything, VR headsets in their current form(the one apple appropriated) have existed for 2 decades. Apple is lightyears behind the competition and as a result will be just copy and pasting someone else's work AGAIN when a company figures out how to properly integrate into a wearable item that isn't ridiculous. Side note, the AI that helps them with the eye tracking and hand/body gestures as well as receiving audio from you and your surroundings? All bedrock for it came from Microsoft's Kinect, which is also in every cellphone you've owned since 2014
@@victorkreig6089 Apple is not behind the competition, they have been working on this a lot in the shadow for a long time
@@joelcoll4034 lol not nearly as long as you want
@@darkshadow6556 I'm stating facts, you're up in arms about it because you disagree and for some reason your default reaction is to belittle me. Says a lot more about you than it does me
In the future, it will be focused on gaming, which is why it has hand recognition, which is why Apple released a Game Porting Tool. Apple only showed at WWDC what Vision Pro does best NOW, but not what it can do in the future.
This is a great approach
It'll be interesting if it can play Resident Evil 8 VR, since it runs great on M chips and is being created for Sony VR.
i wish they could have teased what it could do in the future as well as what it does now. like a sneakpeak. :( but yeah, i do agree with you
Imagine looking down at your hand in the future and a rifle materializing and lidars out your home into a personalized FPS
100 it’s for gaming…when and other viewing umm things
I like the tone of this response because it fights the urge to react to the Vision Pro in a binary way. It's either revolutionary or it's a confusing flop. In reality it's both. Apple has done something revolutionary with this tech and shown a LOT of potential with what it can be. They have also put out a confused narrative that seems strange and doesn't connect with how people would use this sort of device on a daily basis. I see SOME ways that I want to try adding Vision Pro to my life, but a lot of the scenarios Apple showed in a keynote would be a hard no for me.
ofc it’s revolutionary. it’s not ready yet but it’s a start.
I agree. It’s perfectly fine to be excited about the technical marvel of a new device while at the same time question its actual worth.
It cannot be both. It quite literally can’t be a flop because it’s not for sale yet. End of your argument
Exactly and I think that's the point. They showed the potential of what it can be but not what it is. Obviously us nerds will get excited because we can see the potential but not the general mass. When Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone, he stated that it was a phone, iPod, and an internet device. Obviously the input method is always the wow moment, but stating what a product is is what defines it. It seems like even Apple doesn't know who and what this product is for.
@@GUY-on-Earth "It's not ready yet". I would love elaboration on this. Was the first edition iPhone which led to the long line that we have today not ready for not having access to the app store, being unable to take video, and lack of GPS?
Thank you, Jon! I also seem to be in the minority with this announcement. Apple Vision Pro looks incredible, but I simply cannot see the average person wearing an AR/VR headset throughout their day - regardless of the price. I'm very excited for the future, but we still have a long way to go. I was hoping for something more along the lines of Google Glass... Minimal design and more focus on solving a problem.
Appreciate you, David ❤
@@FrontPageTech why did you not include anything about the purchase of Mira? This story ends on a very positive note. I don't know what you expected to get
why would the average person have to wear this throughout their day? Why couldn’t they use this at home like people use their…PS5s? Desktops computers? TVs? Why do you think it would have to be worn “throughout the day” ?
@@JJohnson313 lol especially with where the technology currently is right. I was really confused while watching this video.
Honestly Jern, your deep dives are really interesting to watch. People may or may not agree, but it does force thinking on it. Would love for it to be a regular thing on the channel
Sounds like the some of the same skepticism everyone had about the iphone when it launched. Also, unlike every other Apple product before Vision Pro, this is the first one you look through, and not at. So it likely made a lot of sense to have it worn by others, as they presented information about how it worked. Since it is something you have to put on and experience yourself in order to understand how it works.
Until you try it… don’t hate
Finally someone said it.... 100% agree with Jon that even though Vision Pro is amazing, it is a product that is meant for un-connecting people physically. Sadly this is the future.
I don’t know if I agree. I feel it connects people more to the real world than a fake world like the meta quest products. It just wasn’t announced well.
The iPhone already does that.
It already is happening. Has nothing to do with Apple Goggles.
But it will VR Porn awesome, and surely that will results it more people coming together.
@@dublinvids5146 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dam bro, what an interesting and original take on this topic! Hats off to you! Really made me rethink the whole vision pro release. Good video
The product (and software) is incredible. The announcement is as big as the original l iPhone announcement. I’m in.
Go back to 1981 and they said the same thing about the 24.5 lb laptop in a brief case. No one is going to lug this around. It will continuously get smaller lighter and last longer. It will end up like glasses and replace monitors.
Thank you for uploading in 4K! Also Apple what body part do you want of mine?
I agree with you for the most part. However, I don't think Apple will sell the Vision Pro like that. In my opinion, Apple will use the feedback from developers and then optimize the final product. That's why, in my view, the release was pushed so far into next year. At least I hope so.😀
This man will eat his words when they make improvements to the headset and make it more affordable
absolutely sounds acts and talks like a very short sighted nerd , but not the the cool and intelligent kind of nerd , rather the 10 year old nerd that trows a tantrum because the greatest thec device he has ever seen sucks because it does not come in his favorite color …so annoying
Maybe. Its not portable.
@@slampestit’s bound to be. You don’t think the next priority step is to make it wireless? We live in a wireless time, just give it some time.
Then it's a different product
They need years and tons of development. I predict it fails to meet expectations and they back burner it.
Who else thought it was weird that they released a vision health update to the iPhone and iPad to help keep the screen away from your face (Screen Distance) and then, about 3 minutes later, release a product that puts a screen an inch from your eyeballs?
The thing is phones, tablets and every other thing which has a display has to be used from a decent distance against u because our eyes perceive the world at a much higher resolution than the resolution on these devices therefore it strains our eyes a lot and may deteriorate our eye sight but vision pro has a 4k display right on ur eyes that kinda resolution is more than enough to effect the eyesight
@@kiryuukazuma5986 don’t think it has to do with resolution and more has to do with depth perception and all the blue light. We probably need more studies on VR/AR headsets until we know the true issues. My comment was more just for humor than concern for medical issues, found it kinda ironic.
All headsets have a focal distance MANY Feet/meters away from you, so are actaully easier on your eyes than holding phone 10" from your face.
@@williampope3405 Blue light.. I read 8 hours on a monitor screen equals 15 minutes in the sun.
When the first iPhone came out it was the same. People already “knew” touch phones… but oh man, once you TOUCHED and experienced an iPhone it was another level. It made the others look like plastic unresponsive toys, but you had to EXPERIENCE it. And it spread through word of mouth like fire…
Jon saying everything that we're (mostly) afraid to say. I hope it gets refined. Good point about Cook never wearing it.
How would you expect it to get refined without first having a generation one in the hands of developers?
It seems like this whole concern would be resolved with more collaborative experiences… which is easily rectified by developers and an API from Apple. 🤷🏾♂️
I appreciate the work that went into this video. I don’t think it’s going to age well one year from now.
I for one want this, precisely because I think it is an incredibly human piece of technology. It obviates many irritations I have with current computer interfaces, making them much more natural and instinctive (backed up by the people who've used it who have said that it is the most intuitive computer experience they've ever had). Do I think the masses will buy it right now? Nah. But it's not meant for that. This is meant to begin seeding the developer and content creation markets so the next generation (or even the one after that) are ready. The tech is being sold at bargain basement prices (I strongly suspect they're making a loss on each unit right now) to soften the ground and deny market share to lower quality devices.
There is also a category error I'm seeing, which isn't anyone's fault exactly because very few people are aware this even exists. This device isn't augmented reality. It isn't virtual reality. It isn't even mixed reality. It is much closer to a concept from the late 90s/early 2000s called 'mediated reality'. Unlike augmented reality, you aren't layering a separate digital layer over the physical world. Unlike virtual reality, you aren't simply in a digital reality. Unlike mixed reality, you aren't simply adding 3D digital elements to the physical world. Instead, you're able to alter parts of the physical world with selective immersion. One of the promises of mediated reality is being able to make the boundary between the digital and physical almost entirely seamless, which lets you use the full range of built-in capabilities of our brains. That level of intuitiveness is impossible with other types of device (including other types of XR tech). With this type of device you could give people the feeling of having more than 3-cone colour vision, or extra senses entirely, or telekinesis, and much more besides by taking advantage of neuroplasticity and mediating reality. This means you no longer need to consciously think about the technology of computing, and you no longer need to design your living spaces around giant black rectangles.
Lastly, it is an accessibility aid for many. If you have social anxiety disorder, or dysmorphia, or dysphoria, or are house-bound for health reasons, you can be extremely isolated. With the digital personas, and other tech coming along those lines, you can still experience human connection. Even for others, this is important. Being able to have a 'face to face' conversation with a realistic 3D image of someone in a shared 3D space will save me about 2 transatlantic flights a year and improve the quality of all the other workshops I have.
You get it. Prior to reading your comment I hadn’t heard of “mediated reality”, but as you describe it, that is exactly what I had hoped Apple would deliver, and it looks like they have.
My first laptop was a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, which cost just about as much as Vision (not even accounting for inflation). The reason I chose the Mac over a far less expensive but similarly speced PC was expose and spaces: that is, the intuitive gesture based window and desktop management interface. Simple as it sounds, that feature had such an impact on the user experience that using Windows was actually painful by comparison. I expect Vision will illicit a similar response.
I wish I had some scientific evidence to back me up but I personally think that human do need the ability to distinct between what's real and what isn't. I fear of what would happen to them when they don't.
well said, idk why this is so hard for people to understand. this is classic apple lol
The accessibility possibilities are what have me most excited about this device. Thank you for mentioning that.
I had the complete opposite reaction. Before WWDC, I was thinking "Why would I ever want an XR headset?" After watching it, I was thoroughly convinced by Apple. Also, I don't understand this whole "where's the human element" because this product is literally just a MacBook for your face, a MacBook with better viewing options, what part of a MacBook is human or social? None of it, I don't understand why this headset needs to be treated any differently, just because it covers yours eyes? You stare at a computer screen all day anyway, completely alone in that
Totally agree. I'm also confused with all the talk about being social. Smartphones have completely isolated people as everyone stares at a screen instead of each other. AirPods literally block out the external world. Laptops have people staring into screens for hours each day. Technology is isolating and people choose this over seeing friends IRL. Yet when it comes to this headset everyone is all of a sudden extroverts who visit their mothers everyday and help their elderly neighbors with the groceries.
Paying $3500 for a glorified iPad is ludicrous. The vast majority of people with VR headsets use it mostly for VR gaming. Apple is leaving out 80% of the experiences with no controllers
holy moly what a video. i personally agree that once they fit the thing into contact lenses it'll be good. but i watched the announcement and knew there's no way i'm buying it, it's simply not for me. maybe some people will get use out of it but this definitely isn't something for the average joe like a watch or a phone. awesome video mate
This was an incredibly astute take. I do agree with many of your points; however, being a tech fiend, I’m still beyond excited to get my hands on this product. Your points about this not being something that connects people is valid, but have you considered that people aren’t interested in real life connection anymore? One thing I’ve noticed in my travels around the world is the amount of people who are absorbed into looking into their screens, even in public spaces where you’d expect them to be social. Perhaps this is Apple building a product for those people. Dystopian, sure, but who else can we blame for that other than ourselves? 🤷🏽♂️
mail it this nerd is living in the past … someone should tell him that jobs is not longer alive
If this launches in March, let’s say, I think Apple is going to have a lot more to say, or show with the AVP. I don’t think they’ve played all their cards, just yet. I can see a lot of amazing apps, hopefully games, TV+ content, sports and concert experiences. Idk. I’m remaining positive and I’m excited.
I carried 10 pound camcorders to Disneyland back in the day. I have my eyes focused on a phone or computer a lot and I’m not paying attention to the world around me 100% of the time. I am ‘that’ person and I’m good with that. I didn’t do it to impress anyone, but for myself to enjoy the experience later if I wanted to. I enjoy consumption devices and services. iPhones, computers, tv and movies, music, games. Idk I think Apple has an ecosystem that might just surprise or convince people that this thing ‘could’ be an option for a lot of us that like top of the line experiences. I don’t like the price, but I can understand it. I can also see in a few years a more palpable product for others. 🤷🏻♂️🤞🏼🤞🏼
I am also one who does like to cut myself off from the real world. I have friends and like to go out some, but I do live alone and love it. I have extreme anxiety and I’m sure other issues that haven’t been diagnosed properly. LOL. But I could see myself ‘trying’ to be more social and outgoing with this kind of tech, in my own way, or to help me even. Just my opinion and why I think I’d love it. I absolutely get others opinions and remarks on this, and I respect them also.
Unfortunately even Apple has to eventually hit go, especially when so many resources have been put into a project like this one. What was lacking in the intro were those use cases that took advantage of the augmented reality experience in more connected ways.
We talked last week about the idea of someone calling into their local car repair for basic help like changing the oil in their car or getting overlayed directions in a 911 call so you didn’t do anything stupid instead of trying to help someone. That being said, I think that will come once the platform has a. Matured and b. Become more accessible.
The way I’m looking at it:
Apple Vision is about one thing, defining how we interface with spatial computers.
All the experiences that will happen on the device are secondary to the ui and input method.
The mac introduced the mouse and keyboard, the iPhone introduced multi touch, Vision pro introduces spatial computing with their eye tracking/pinch system
I really think that is the core of the product. The experiences they’re selling on top of it are just the content to the broader context of HOW you use the thing; the UI and input method.
Might seem trivial, but nailing the input method is crucial to articulating a new way to compute.
I wish I could like this comment 100 times!
I agree with the spatial computing aspect of your comment but it isn’t just apple doing this. What doesn’t make sense to me is you said “how you use the product” the presentation just showed people using it all the time even when watching your kids or talking to friends. It is odd that Tim Cook didn’t even use it.
$3500 Apple Vision Pro. Yeah I won’t be buying that. $1500 Apple Glasses that do the exact same thing……yeah I’ll buy that.
I think Apple’s vision for their new AR gadget is that of Swan Song. Tim’s vision was, allegedly, for AR glasses precisely because they were unobstructive and wouldn’t take away from the human experience, but unfortunately the tech isn’t there yet, and that’s why they launched it. The AR gadgets out there are kinda bad and the technology became stagnant. This product is more of a proof of concept than anything. It IS the future but just a taste of it to spur competition and development in the AR industry. I that that’s their move here.
@GH0STST4RSCR34M That’s my whole point, though. The tech for the glasses isn’t here yet; that’s why they plan to release them much later in the decade. I mean, Apple themselves couldn’t make the glasses happen with all their vast resources. So, they launched the Vision Pro to spur industry development into AR components and the ecosystem that’ll eventually be used for the glasses, which are Apple’s ultimate mission goal.
It’s kind of how Apple stirred the development of the smartphone into what they are today. Apple never jumped into the gimmicks other companies were developing for their smartphones until those technologies had matured. Now, iPhones have OLED panels and face recognition that are best-in-class.
Also it's a requirement to get actual hardware into developers hands so that they can begin creating the software for the future of this AR platform. The software isn't just going to magically appear. Building out the ecosystem of software will propel the future development of the hardware too just like it did with the iPhone.
Man I have to commend Jon on this, this is the most human response I’ve seen yet.
No is not
I was amazed by the announcement. In my view they thought of absolutely everything and I did not have the feeling of a first generation product once. What I saw was at a level as if the first iPhone already was the iPhone 4.
The issue is that this is the first time Apple has made a standalone device since literally the Macintosh. iPod needed Mac iPhone needed Mac iPad needs Mac and even Apple Watch needed iPhone. Vision Pro is the device that merges AirPod, iPhone, TV, and Mac all into one device. It doesn’t need Mac because it is a Mac. It doesn’t need iPhone because it has all your favorite iOS/iPadOS apps. Vision Pro just feels caught between the rock of time and the hard place of overconsumption of technology.
I don't agree with you. Apple Vision Pro doesn't need a Mac, an iPhone, an Apple TV, and a luxury house. This is the next big thing. It will make you feel rich :)
I can see a January Event, solely dedicated to the Apple Vision Pro. They are looking at feedback and probably going to demonstrate their solution at this event and announce the release date.
realityOS is also still in development, so I imagine they will add be some mitigations to the major criticisms as much as they can through software as well.
I had no interest in the vision pro before the announcement, but actually am intrigued now. I could see buying gen2, if they show they are serious about supporting it’s growth and improving it for the long term.
I on the other hand couldn’t be more enthusiastic about vision pro and spatial computing. Think of all the possibilities with apps! I can’t wait to see what developers come up with as for immersive gameplay and especially as the chips improve every year. The ideas are almost limitless and soon one day we’ll look at desktop computing like it was some sort of dinosaur 🦕
🦕 🦖
John, John, John…. Apple ‘stuck’ the landing… and you missed it.
Well, I can’t believe I’m defending apple… but I don’t think you got it. It was presented on the correct event. It’s not for everyone, this is especially tailored for people that spend a lot of time at home, people that work remote. It’s not for everyone.
Look… I’m just glad we have a new Apple product in the horizon as an OPTION lol. I know it’s not the best we wanted or might not even be within reach financially (for me at least lol), but they’re at least trying. Let’s just hope history doesn’t repeat itself like the AirPower mat (or whatever it was called) with all the negative criticism its received. Side note: You seem like a new person on your videos and love to see you killing it! Love your content!
the power mat never recieved negative criticism, it actually just didnt work and was never finalized in development, people were waiting on that product for years, so idk what youre talking about there.
The buzz will be created from the developers. It'd true this is not important for the normal users, but to me it gives me the tools to create finally what I've been planning since 2001. The fact that it's not trying to lure me into a virtual world but it wan't to augment my real world is probably what will save the future fo AR, VR, XR and all those letters you want to put together. I believe that the consumer version when it will be presented for the masses will be great. I am exited and I hope I will be able to create great things for it in time for the WOW moment.
Agreed 👍I'm personally excited to start building applications to utilize this piece of equipment. I can see the physical fitness industry benefit the most from this. Or imagine using this during a laser tag/paint ball game, or augment a ninja warrior course to be way cooler than it already is.
Tim Cook not wearing the headset was a huge thing that I did not notice as I was not thinking about it.
"Spatial computing" is very reliant of what gets developed for it and it shows. I believe Apple made an awesome tool ready for what developers can create for it... Without knowing what exactly it can be used for. The biggest "ok boomer..." Moment Apple has ever had. Them not understanding what the capabilities of what they are creating but making a product ready for... Whatever.
As a creative, my expectations where blown out of the park for the possibilities! It is an incredible piece of tech and I love it.
But you are right. Apple did not know how to present their piece of work and are afraid of wearing the tech on stage, looking funky and scarying everyone away. Those inside meetings must have been a heated back and forth on whether they should wear it or not.
Awesome take Jon. And fuck you, with love 💕
so real
Can't wait for the eventual "I was wrong" video in 9 months
It's laughable to even imagine Steve wearing this on stage. This is Apple's Virtual Boy. The glasses form factor of the likes of XReal and Rodkid is where this is going and where they should have started.
I felt like I was watching a VisionPro advertisement for 15 minutes 😂😂😂😂
Honestly...this is 100% right. I've been excited about this because of the tech, but I haven't really thought about my use case for it. I don't really have one and I'm guessing the vast majority of people don't have one either outside of watching a 3d movie or something. I have a Meta Quest and I don't use it. I assumed it was because the screen door effect, or the lack of battery life, mostly low quality apps...but the reality is I don't want to sit around by myself with a thing strapped to my head for extended periods of time.
You have an issue with the concept of mixed reality itself, and no product no mater how advanced is gonna be able to change that, not in the foreseeable future
I would want to hear from you what use cases would you want from it if your main problem with it is that it straps to your face and makes you more isolated
Like hell yeah it would, how else is the device supposed to work, and also it’s time for developers to dream up different ways to use the technology, but that ain’t gonna change the fundamentals of how it actually works
@@abdullahemad9457 There are people who enjoy being isolated with their tech. Most people aren't like that. When AR can be worn out and about, when it can be integrated into your daily life without wearing a large, bulky device over half of your face, and when the higher quality experiences aren't prohibitively costly it will be more widely adopted. I'd love to put on a pair of glasses, go into the kitchen and walk though a recipe. I'd find that much easier than propping up an ipad and looking back and forth. Maps and directions would be much easier with AR. Playing sports and seeing biometric data or highlighting a football/basketball/baseball as it's on its way to you, with speed or rotation data would be cool. The future of the tech is going to be amazing. This particular headset is not made for the masses.
I think Apple will have an event for it on January or March next year once it’s available and by that time many developers have developed their apps esp streaming services and some games and productivity apps.
And a better version of IMAX 3D theatre in your room or anywhere…maybe shareplay also. And many accessories from companies to make it feel lighter for longer usage.
Hopefully 3years from now, fashionable AR glasses will be available like Nreal glasses
I’m a prescription glass guy. I’ll never want to wear anything more than necessary on my face.

Love to see how passionate you are about the human side of apple products! I also think that in the near future, the iPhone will take spatial video so that during those memorable times you aren’t stuck in a headset.
You sound a lot like Leo Laporte and his critiques on the Vision Pro. You and him are definitely entitled to your opinions, but the only problem I have is that either of you haven’t demoed the Vision Pro yet. The people who have had a chance to try it out have definitely been impressed by it.
I think you've missed the ball on this one , I think this is one of those products which will be so insane to use with all its use cases , that itself will leverage out the goofiness , plus that's why there is the feature which can help you see other's eyes which would make it a little more human.
It sure is goofy , but the use cases it presents are genuinely incredible so I would be( cautiously) optimistic that people would look over the goofiness but there is no doubt that it can be polarising to use .
So let's see how it pans out
I think its great, people are never happy with things that come out, we have come so far in technology, this is just the beginning of what's to come, I don't think I would wear it all day but I sure would use it a lot, I can't wait to get it, I hope when you do get it to test it out you are amazed on what they did,
Man… I’m proud of you. These types of videos just show me how much you have to say more than news. Keep the good work.
First FPT I've watched. I totally agree with what you said. Insight and contextual analysis , not just the stats.
Love FPT! Honestly, I’m hyped about this product. Gotta start somewhere and let’s be honest, this looks like the beginning of completely new tech. And honestly, tons of people teleworking, introverts, etc…. I think this type of future is inevitable.
Single people are the fastest growing household in the west. So this tracks.
We're going to get ready player one whether we like it or not!
I’ve been quite behind the times as I’m just now learning about this product. But I can positively say this is groundbreaking. I will very likely buy this in its 2nd or 3rd generation. Imagine a work space that can go literally anywhere. No more buying monitors and cables and finding a place to set down the laptop while outside the office. My productivity will be sky high and monitor size and shape can change as needed. It’s ugly, sure, but ugly won’t matter when this thing makes life more mobile.
Videos like these remind me that Jern and FPT are not just a wacky presenter on a news channel but a real journalist with valuable opinions and gravitas.
I really hope, that you are wrong. I WANT the Vision Pro to be great 😢 What interested me was the business scenario.
I hope I'm wrong, too.
@@FrontPageTech you are
@@FrontPageTech Watching your video to the end: I fear, you are right 😭
I suspect a head in the lunch box won’t be the only spacial computing device or the only way to capture the 3D experiences in the future, perhaps other devices in our homes and other environments will capture the 3d moments (and do it better) and the vision pro is more of a personal device to reflect on them after the fact ( or interact remotely) and could be primarily the go to personal device replacement. Thanks for your video
Been waiting on your thoughts on this. Great video, Jon! I love the funny, light-hearted FPT videos - but I also love when you release videos like this. Love hearing your thoughts. Thank you for all you do for us tech nerds.
UA-cam Author: “I don’t doubt that this is the future”
UA-cam Author’s Title of Video: “this is NOT the future - Apple Vision Pro”
Great video. Add to this, Apple showing the wired battery was a bad move imo. It looks ugly and less ergonomic. Headset should’ve had an internal battery!
I’ve never felt the need to comment on a video, but that was just the most incredible insight into this product that I’ve seen. You’ve really got to the bottom of what actually happened with this launch, and I also can’t wait for them to figure this out in time.
Still might buy one though…
I'm getting it because it's cheaper than the VR video editing/production setup I wanted to build ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
I'd also like to add that for the whole memories thing, people will likely pull out the headset for a few moments to capture it like a camcorder. I don't see people wearing it around constantly.
People don't understand how this is going to revolutionize the VR video production industry compared to the hardware that is currently available.
The headset is amazing, but the software they showed off was really disappointing. There was no killer app. It will be completely up to developers if this thing succeeds or not. They need to create some REALLY compelling VR experiences for this to sell.
If they make this waterproof, I can see myself watching movies, working, checking socials floating in my pool. Can you imagine watching the NFL on these. I’m excited to buy the SE version 4 years from now.
i got fed up after he said i defend apple products 10 x over. GET ON WITH DAMN VIDEO.
I love Jon. You can tell that he loves this world full of technology. And that makes him so sad that the project won't be the future. At least not yet.
I keep seeing people talking about how people will be wearing it all day, or through entire events like birthday parties, but they seem to be forgetting that the battery life is only 2 hours 😂 I’m recording a small video and then putting it back on the charger to I can watch corn later when everyone leaves! 😂 memory captured, party amazed, kids not traumatized
Edit: when I look back on child hood memories, rarely does the image of my father holding that big camcorder in front of his face come to mind 😂 and this isn’t even as bad as that was. With that being said, I don’t think it will “ruin” memories for kids or anyone not wearing the head set
I'm still VERY excited for this thing (aside from he price of course LOL)... but I also agree with everything you've said. By the way it was AWESOME to meet you and talk to you in SF! I love the pic I got of us. :)
He is saying as if people are going to wear the headset for a whole day, the battery literally lasted 2 hours. And saying Tim Cook didn't wear it is not the gotcha he thought it might be, because like he said himself, it is a product that is used very personally.
I understand what you are saying about not being human. But maybe this product is not right for you, but it might be right for me. I thought you did a great job explaining this where no one else talks about the Vision Pro like this. Again, it's not about how cool the technology, it's about how people are to adapt to this. I hated the Apple watch after I purchased it. As a matter of fact I purchased it 3 times. I didn't wear the watch for many reasons. Until the watch had some serious reasons why I purchased the series 8 where the watch finally proved to be of value. No this product is not for everyone. You said it, "Its first generation", but again, humans have eyes and ears located in the same spot on their head and we are in a paradyme where all we know at this time is to mount a device with a strap to our head with 2 23 million pixel resolution displays where are eyes are located. Personally I can't think of any other way to get this type of experience. Sure it will get smaller and lighter, but I also think, will this be accepted by others in the future as a defacto standard? Time will only tell.
Memory related illnesses are very high in my family, so I’m very interested in the spatial photos and videos capture! I need to see it in person first, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a very very useful thing for my family
@GH0STST4RSCR34M lol already do that with normal photos and video! NO SHIT SHERLOCK! It’s something completely different to have the full 3d spatial effect!
And no, they’re not late to anything. NO one in the market has even created anything remotely similar to or even super useful in everyday life as what Apple pitched. Is it perfect, no not yet but it sure as hell is an industry trend setter and like with everything else, everyone’s gunna copy it and a lot of people are going to get one
@GH0STST4RSCR34M I had 2 3D tvs in the house at the time, I remember them well. Garbage tech that wasn’t actually 3d, it added a tiny bit of depth to “3D” content and was a huge waste! This isn’t even comparable to 3D tv by considerable magnitude
Also list out all the headsets that are comparable with vision pro. I’m interested what you bring up! Sure some of them compare with their screens but none offer the whole package like vision pro. And I’m not talking about hacky work arounds and side projects for quest! What straight outta the box compares fully with vision pro?
I completely agree with you at some level, but I think it was the same with the iPhone and Apple Watch launch. They haven’t showed us many new use cases what you can do with them, they only showed how things can be done way better than before. Those 1st gen devices were very limited in terms apps and features but what was really impressive is the level of innovation, the technology, the engineering, the way you used them. It’s the same with Vision Pro.
People are forgetting that developers need to actually have the generation one hardware to begin building apps for the platform, and also this was the developer conference and people are treating it like it was meant for the general public.
You seem to be forgetting that people actually want phones and watches, nobody wants a big piece of shit on their head
@@josephpepe2607 nobody wanted to carry brick phones either
It is absolutely refreshing to see and hear your perspective on this product from Apple. I agree 100% with every point you made about it. Apple used to show you situations using their products that you wanted to be part of but with this thing all they showed you was how disconnected you would be from the rest of the world while using this thing. It was literally a little dystopian.
Disagree - I can see the average Joe and techie seeing the potential of this and what it means for the future. Those who haven’t fully understood what AR and VR mean for our future see it now. Will the average Joe buy it, no. But they “see” and this sets the tone for where technology is going. In a world where nothing else quite like this exists, Apple did a decent job showcasing it. My take.
I’m really shocked that you don’t see what this is. Our future is inevitably a future without devices in hand. This is Apple’s concept car version of what will in a few years be offered in a cheaper, lightweight version we’ll all use - and it will replace our devices. Surprising you see this only through the lens of “now”, and can’t see that the implementation will evolve. Nobody will remember this “first impression” down the road.
These things look amazing and they are just the beginning of the story.
You talk about making them smaller for what they do but obviously that was impossible and Apple would have loved to make them alot smaller if they could have.
The vision pro will be slow to take off, not because of what you say here but because of the price.
This version 1 looks pretty damn cool compared to anything else out there by a mile and just from hearing about the hands on reviews so far, I can’t wait to get my hands on them, then version Air or version x ...
It’s years until LiDAR and cameras make it smaller. They won’t turn into glasses overnight. Otherwise, I’ll stick to reality and not this oversized ski goggles monster
So its true, ppl will buy a turd as long as it has an apple logo on it, a $3500 turd for that matter.
Version air 😂😂😂
The fact that they announced it on WWDC felt off too, I agree that this isn't the future... I don't think we're at the point culturally where people want to literally stick screens to their faces 24/7. In fact I think we're shifting to be a little bit more digitally fatigued (specially inside our homes). I hope someday in the near future we see a much refined Google Glass kind of deal (or even just skip to brain chips ) from Apple. I'll believe we're in the future when we have a working prototype of a device showing you the way when visiting another town/ being outside... "Siri please show me the nearest toilet, the new FPT video is out".
@GH0STST4RSCR34M It isn't delayed by a year at all, 2024 was most likely the intended launch date, the most likely explanation for why they announced it early is so developers can start optimising their apps for AR. Remember they announced the Apple Watch well before it released too.
it was announced on WWDC because they want developers to create apps before it launches in 2024. this is respect to the users by having much more than just the stock apps. we've already started developing on visionOS
Jony Ive’s vision for the iPhone was a flat piece of glass that is all display. We’ve been getting closer and closer to this with the notch and then the dynamic island. Tim Cook’s vision for Vision Pro is a pair of glasses that give the wearer an augmented reality experience. This Vision Pro is what they could do now (a big headset that is AR and VR). They had to take this first step or else they would never be able to get to the glasses of Tim’s dreams. I think the hyping up of this product before it was released led to this reaction of yours. We all knew Tim’s vision of the glasses that will change the world. We didn’t get that. Yet. This isn’t going to be a good selling product next year when it is released and with the $3,499, Apple clearly didn’t want it to be. Once Vision Pro is a thousand dollar pair of glasses, it will revolutionize the world and millions of people will be wearing them all day every day. This product now will ensure that there is a future for those glasses. Developers will make apps and other companies will keep up the competition. This product simply just starts us down the path that leads to the revolutionized way we will interact with each other in the future.
Millions of people will not buy glasses 😂
@@josephpepe2607 People said the same about smartwatches. And then came the Apple Watch.
The conclusion is banged on. There’s no need to buy it, and I see myself wanting to buy it if and only if Vision pro expands everything from 2D perspective to 3D. Walk through memories recording like how in Avengers endgame, tony stark’s love you 3000. Video calls with 3D projection, really see your loved ones feel like real life across the world.
Title: this is NOT the future
10 mins later: I know without a doubt this is the future...
I've read/watched a LOT of Vision Pro reactions and yours is by FAR the one that has resonated with me most. The fact that no high-level exec wore the device speaks volumes.
Tim Cook didn’t wear it or any of all the higher ups didn’t have the balls to wear it
hopefully it supports all the haptic feedback tech coming out for VR headsets. gloves vest etc
Interesting retrospect on the announcement. Respect the fact you took time to wait, and provided your opinion. A lot of what you said resonates with a lot of people but honestly are to scared to consider because, it’s Apple. Thanks for making this video.
Side note are you wearing a Whoop band as well?
You spent the whole video complaining about how it isn’t the future and how this product isn’t “apple” like. But you didn’t specify what you would’ve liked the headset to be. I think you just had extremely unrealistic expectations for the headset. You also said that you have no doubt that Apple is going to get it right in the future but also said that this product isn’t the future?🤔
You have plenty of good arguments here. But dude, there are also photos of Steve Jobs looking at iPhone behind glass case, it was also not usable for months. Tim also don’t wear AirPods in the keynote, damn, AirPods Max were released by a website refresh. You say it’s awful then the recording party is absent, look at your reaction video, people are watching the WWDC on a screen and still recording you. Will they regret they didn’t see you in person? Sure but we pull out the phone and are absent and recording all the time. Not saying it’s good, just saying you already do that thing you laugh at in the keynote.
no. the problem is that this is a first generation device that completely ignores the well established uses of every other 2nd and 3rd gen device in its category. it's like presenting the most beautiful hammer ever... which can't drive nails.
no-one gives a shit about AR. there's no killer app. people want VR. it's been around for years, and those who know its importance want improved headsets. they want eye tracking. super high resolution. and apple provided this...on a device that can't do VR. if it could, they would have been shouting about it. but it doesn't- and they drove it home by letting you know there will be no hand controllers for it, and there was no mention of gaming. they didn't mention gaming because they know that VR enthusiasts REALLY care about it, and they can't deliver to a market they've ignored. their hardware can't game.
Not gonna lie, I won't spend 3500 in a headset that is going to isolate me more from others and make it seem like something "fun"...
I was fully not in agreement with you and then you said "And if you still think I'm wrong, did you ever seen Tim Cook wearing it on stage?"
.....damn.
