Homemade Orange Chicken | Fruits A to Z

  • Oranges are a great fruit, and I highlight them in this video by making delicious orange chicken. This is a simple recipe that's sweet, tangy, crispy, and way better than Panda Express if I say so myself. We'll start by making a sauce with a few simple ingredients, then batter and fry some chicken thighs before tossing in orange chicken sauce and topping with greens, onions, and fresh orange zest.
    Everyone knows A is for Apple, but why stop there? This is episode 15 in my series Fruits A to Z, where O is for Orange. I'm making different dishes focused on a fruit for every letter of the alphabet.
    Recipe
    Ingredients
    Sauce
    -1 navel orange
    -½ cup water
    -½ cup brown sugar
    -2 tablespoons rice vinegar
    -2 tablespoons soy sauce
    -Pinch red pepper flakes
    -1 inch knob ginger root
    -2 garlic cloves
    -2 tablespoon water
    -1 tablespoon cornstarch
    -1 pinch salt
    Chicken
    -4 boneless skinless chicken thighs
    -½ cup all-purpose flour
    -1 tablespoon seasoned salt
    -¼ cup (30g) cornstarch
    -1 egg
    -1 tablespoon water
    Preparation
    Sauce
    In a saucepan, combine water, brown sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, red pepper flakes, and grate in a small knob of fresh ginger and two cloves of garlic.
    Zest and juice one orange. Set the zest aside to add at the end, and add the juice to the saucepan. Cook for a few minutes to dissolve the sugar.
    In a small bowl, combine water and cornstarch, whisk together, add to the sauce, boil, and cook until thickened; set aside.
    Chicken
    Trim the fat and cut the chicken into bite-size pieces
    Add the flour, cornstarch, and salt to a mixing bowl
    Whisk egg with a tablespoon of water in a bowl and add chicken
    Dredge the chicken in flour batter, a few pieces at a time, and set it on a plate
    Heat neutral oil( I used peanut) in a wok or heavy-bottomed pot on medium-high heat and bring to 350F
    Cook a few pieces at a time, then set aside on a wire rack
    Heat oil to 375F and fry one more time
    Assembly
    Add the sauce to the wok or a large mixing bowl; add the chicken and finish with the reserved orange zest. Toss to evenly coated.
    Top with green onions and finish with a touch more orange zest. Enjoy!
