I made this today and he wasn't lying when he said you'd want more so go ahead and make a big batch. I used garlic powder and msg in my flour mixture in addition to the salt and pepper. This dish is sweet, sour, spicy and salty. Its so so good.

Recently my husband got a job opportunity that will be taking us to live in Kingsville,Tx. We live in a big city and all of the Chinese establishments here are TERRIBLE when it comes to orange chicken. I had most of the ingredients on hand and prep work was easy. We made this recipe tonight and it was definitely one of the best orange chicken recipes I've used. Much better than the panda express one. I also used half maple syrup and lakonto sugar as a refined sugar substitute and it tasted AMAZING!

Just made this tonight and let me say it really is better than takeout! I was skeptical that he insisted on using freshly squeezed orange juice, but I went ahead and did it anyway and it was spectacular -- made all the difference, I believe. (used Valencia oranges )
I like the marmalade idea, and l like altering the recipe at times, I've made this dish several times and there a just a few things i do differently, i marinade the chicken with orange juice for 30 minutes, I use brown sugar not white and i fry the chicken light brown then let cool a bit and then refry again it makes it extra crispy and then top with sesame seeds. made it exactly like he did yesterday and it turned out really good

Tropical brand Apricot Pineapple preserves is a secret weapon..excellent sauce for dipping is that, vinegar (white or rice or both) to taste, and a sweet chili sauce to taste, blend, it’s awesome. Best sweet and sour sauce ever. You can also add the preserves to a recipe like this for a flavor boost. Five spice powder is always great in your Arsenal for Chinese food..a bigger steel bowl helps contain the mess.. Start at 375 as it lowers to 350F. Restaurants do a double fry, I found putting them on paper towels or a rack and putting into a hot 380-400F oven for 5-10 minutes gives an extra crunch as it dries out any water that comes out of the chicken and concentrates the chicken flavor, not to mention the crunch!
I love this guy! He's SO real! Yes, I want to wash my hands after all that raw chicken and eggs. Yes, it's busy doing two things at once but I can do it. And yes, I want to make a lot if I'm going to do all that work so I can enjoy delicious leftovers!!
I made this today. It was truly delicious. The only complaint I had was everyone wanted an extra bowl of sauce on the side! I did use my Fry Daddy to cook the chicken only because I suck at pan frying. I did 5 batches total so the chicken was very crunchy. Well worth the time.. Yum! Going to try your Butter Chicken next!
Hey this is good recipe, just one tip for anyone who is going to make this. It is important to double fry your chicken when deep frying. This causes the chicken to have a crispy coating and not a soggy one. Just deep fry as the recipe says and take out of the pot, then add it back in to hot oil for another few mins and you will notice the coating is not pale anymore and way more crispy. The youtuber Maangchi does this and it really makes a difference.

Just finished a plate of Orange Chicken with rice and stir fry vegetables. I used thighs. I was a little worried there wouldn't be enough sauce but it ended up fine. This was so delicious. I might even say AHH-mazing.

You asked for possible spice recommendations. In Chinese and Vietnamese cooking, five spice is a very common addition. Besides that, you might had some very fresh grated Ginger.
This is very similar to the orange chicken recipe I use. If you wanted to to go all cornstarch on your chicken, you could get a large bowl and with with a spray bottle filled with water, spray the cornstarch letting it sit for about 10 seconds and then toss it and repeat with the water bottle spraying once more. This creates an extra crunchy crust on your chicken because you can fell the little cornstarch beads. If you are more comfortable using your hands that's fine but I love to use chop sticks to coat my chicken and then some tongs to quickly place in the hot oil.
I made this a few months ago and again tonight for dinner with Crab Rangoons with Sweet & Sour sauce and White Rice... and it's a great recipe!! Restaurant quality 🥰

I’m in the UK and also have cœliac disease, Kikkoman do a gluten free soy sauce / tamari sauce and it has a blue top.

I could understand if this tasted like Chinese take out, and could totally appreciate that but this tastes better than any orange chicken I’ve ever had!! So tender and the sauce is to die for. The best meal I’ve had all week. Thank you, John. We love your recipes and your videos!
