I was looking for a ½ inch router which had a fixed/plunder adapter, something like the Dewalt DS26204K-QS but unfortunately it’s only a ¼ inch. I have Milwaukee m18 fuel router. It is a covertable router comes with a fixed base but has a plunge base available. I’d stick to small to medium bits with that router. I made the mistake of running it at 31,000 rpms with a 3/8th inch beading bit, luckily I didn’t kill the router bit because it’s a Freud. But I took 5 hours of useful life out of it from 30 minutes of use. I would tone it down to 18,000 rpms next time. I can tell the speed by pitch, middle C# = 16,000 rpm, G# 24,000 rpm, B 28,000 rpm, High C = 31,000 rpms.
I just picked up my first router today. A total newbie . I decided on the dewalt 2 1/4 hp kit that came with plunge base over the compact version pretty much because the rockler oval and circle jig is only available in Canadian stores in the larger size . It’s a bit overkill because I’ll only cut up to 24” but the small jig is from the US and only works in the compact router. I’m a bit nervous to start out using it because it’s a bit heavy. My plan is to cut 1/4 or 1/8 inc plywood circles and ovals and corresponding 1/2 inch Mdf supports for the plywood . I also want to get special carving bits to do some creative carving. There is a guy on UA-cam who sells bases with small handles closer to the base which I hope will make it easier to use. I have small hands and hope the weight of this router won’t be a challenge . The last time I used a router was eons ago in grade 7 to make a clock. I remember I liked using it but don’t remember what sort of router it was . What advice to you have considering I have small hands and feel a bit nervous about the weight and speed of it. I have yet to use it. Won’t be doing round overs but may use that cutter that cuts against templates for the Mdf wood. Looking for your best advice .
First, I would actually recommend that you DO start practicing with round overs. Why? Because you need to first get comfortable with the sound, feel, weight, etc before moving on to templates or any other router work for that matter. Then, once you get more comfortable and confident with the basics, you can move on from there. Second, it sounds like you would really benefit from my beginners handheld routers course. It has answerers to a lot of the questions/concerns you have, and one of the projects at the end of the course is free hand routing for sign making/carving. I'm not finished filming it yet, but you can sign up to be notified when it launches here. bit.ly/2I8vT9k You can also watch my video about feeling nervous with powertools. ua-cam.com/video/j3a7I5MXBUk/v-deo.html Hope some of that helped.
@@TrainingHandsAcademy just watched your video on bits. I did get a full size router due to wanting the easier to source larger rockler circle jig. So what I’m going to do to get comfortable is get the little router base for my dremel 4000 and get compatible router and cnc bits for it to practice and do smaller projects. For my 1/34 hp dewalt I’ll get a spiral up cut and straight dido since those will best suit my needs. I thought about exchanging for a compact router but it only has 1/4 collet and I’d have to order the smaller circle jig from the states as I can only get the big one in Canada. The full size router does seem a bit heavy ,but I want to get used to it. How much will your course cost? I just wish I could find in person in toronto . I signed up on you website to get notified of your courses. My cousin to too far of a drive to learn from him. I have to call dewalt because they failed to include the 1/2 inch collet with nut. I only got the 1/4 inch with nut. Or can I put 1/2 inch bit if I take out the 1/4 inch insert? I’m stumped .
I just got my new Bosch Palm router, I'm exicited as hell, this video was very helpful,, but my finish is not as perfect as i extpected it to be,, I guess I need to practice more.. Thank you bro!!

Hi, I just came across this video and found it informative and instructional and will be viewing your other Training Hands videos. I'm a total Neophyte to using a Router at min. 2:38 where you demonstrate the Push Cut and at min. 3:09 where you demonstrate the climb cut what material are you using between the table and the wood, to prevent the board from flying off the table when using the router? I'm aware your video is 3 years old just hoping this question does not fall upon blind eyes.
Hi, that is called a router mat. If you like my style of teaching you might also really like my new beginner online router course. Check it out here if you want. bit.ly/3DcIeE3
Some good advice therein 👍 Just a point about direction of cut, the “left to right rule can cause people confusion, blindly following left to right can lead to climb cuts if cutting on the far side of a board, or when routing away from you as with your demonstration end grain cut. Personally I prefer “anti-clockwise around the out slide edge of a board, or with. A bearing guided cutter.

Thanks. I'm doing my homework! Watching your videos
You rock!

@@TrainingHandsAcademy I just signed up and joined the community! Awesome to hear that you are a fellow believer! I grew up without a father, so I am trying to learn all that I missed out on by not having someone to teach me! Your videos have been a huge help in helping me understanding the basics!
@@MattJMT I did see your sign-up come through. I'm here to help out in any way I can so don't hesitate to reach out. I'm also a pretty good prayer warrior if you need that too! Talk soon.
Thank you for making this so easy to understand! Tomorrow I shall purchase a router!
Great!
I think it would be useful if you also included how to set up the depth guage using the three pins both on a freehand router and under a router table. Otherwise, very clear and easy to understand.
Loved this video, being a woman and never have touched a router I wished your video had gone a bit more in dummy detail. I have no clue what each type of bit does and I'd like to actually see you use the smaller router maybe on a small project. But your overview was great ...thanks. Going to have a go at it tomorrow.
Thank you so much. Thank you for the CLOSE UPS of everything. For someone like me who is just starting, what may be so obvious to router users, is NOT always obvious to we beginners. Nice video, thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful, and thank you for the feedback!

Gets to the point with no over the top dramatics and pointless comedy routine. Top Notch 🙂👍
Clear, concise, and straight to the point! Liked!

Glad you enjoyed!
Wow that was super helpful and quick, as I was rather apprehensive about what to look for in routers and how they work. Great stuff!
Simple. Straightforward. To the point. Subscribed! Thanks.
Thanks for the sub!
Excellent video tutorial, thanks from London England 👍😎🏴
Thanks 👍
Some good advice therein 👍 Just a point about direction of cut, the “left to right rule can cause people confusion, blindly following left to right can lead to climb cuts if cutting on the far side of a board, or when routing away from you as with your demonstration end grain cut. Personally I prefer “anti-clockwise around the out slide edge of a board, or with. A bearing guided cutter.
Thanks for sharing.
Was wondering if you could do a demo as I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Cheers.
Hi and thanks for the video. Great to see you using the rubber 'mat' to stop the timber from moving, neat trick I will use next time. Cheers.
Thanks for the important easy to watch information. I am going to use my router for the first time and I came to right place. You got yourself a new sub. Cheers from Brazil
