In some ways Pierce is a really good friend for knowing all of this and kept it secret. This also shows Pierce is more observant then we all gave him credit for.

Hes also the one who told Fat Neil the truth about how he got the name and only plays dirty when being vilified. Furthermore, hes the only one in the group that chooses to go to Greendale, The rest kinda fell into the place. So when it comes to the social aspects, the reason he goes to the place, he actually plays a very active role. He even says as much when they are freaking out about summer school during the evil Chang arc "You guys all have dates and parties to go to, I just have looking forward to next year."
It was a reminder that there were people who loved and valued him enough to worry about his location. Pierce being deeply lonely and estranged from the rest of society besides the study group.

My theory is that with his knowledge of all of the groups nuances and his own meticulous nature detailing everything, the device would have to be planted in a different area for each person.
