Yes and I hit the the dance floor when this song was new. But I am sad to say that the Sugar Hill Gang spawned a whole lot of cheap imitators using computer tracks and political lyrics to promote their music. I believe Rap has taken black music back to the Stone Age. In response to any critics - look at other black musicians playing music during the 1970s and 1980s, look at the quality dance floor tracks they produced.

@@garypautard1069 There was a whole lot of imitators of this sound that you dont remember from the early 80s. And if you know where to look theres plenty of clean conscious rap or dance music that even a Boomer can enjoy, Same as any other genre or time period. Go ahead look at the top 100 from the 60s 70s 80s you gonna see a whole bunch of stuff that is crap and not remembered.
And I remind you that this song uses a sample; aka they made it using the computers/ music production of the time and that your parents wouldve derided this song for not using live instruments.

It wasn't played on the radio at first, so the only place I could hear it was at the roller rink, so I went every Friday and Saturday night, and every Sunday afternoon and stayed for the full sessions (including "late skate" on Fri and Sat). When this song would come on, everybody in the rink would rush to the floor. There were coordinated routines to it as well.

@Marty McFly II I put together one of the original beats for Preachers Delight with my 808 (its on my SC). With that, Sugar Hill Gang were indeed the ones ton invent “rap”. They even termed it “rap”
Man, i can remember when this came out. In fact i knew most of the lyrics before i even heard it because EVERYONE at school
      Was steady spitting it ,
But check this out. The closest thing the “true rap” that was prior to this is a genre called “Dub”. Take a listen Here start it at around 7:45 of this video. You can hear the Rasta in the background yell "LYRIC!"
      ua-cam.com/video/7yRnD-SFdbE/v-deo.html
Finally, i make beats and have decided tto recreate this snd give it a modern twist. it will be on my SC in the next few days.

@Marty McFly II Apologies meant to say: 1. I believe they DID realize they were making history (it was huge) The concept of “rapping” has indeed been around since music, and even Blondie “rapped” on her Rapture song...which i *think* came it before this...regardless, these were the ones to truly kick it ALL off.
