The latency isn’t generated within the switcher, it’s inherently generated in HDMI conversion and at that, most latency is generated within your cameras processes as opposed to a processors. What you are hoping to achieve just doesn’t exist at all in a switcher. Also, the layout CAN be changed, you just have to connect up a computer and go into the menu system of the Blackmagic to change the view, it’s very easy - they’ve had that capability for about 9 years now.

Switch to cameras that use SDI. All HDMI cameras introduce latency. Then again any camera with SDI built in will be expensive.

I believe the latency is on the Panasonic cameras, I've not noticed latency on my Studio HD. Also you can change the multiview layout slightly. I agree that having a single video standard is a pain, and I have had to buy 2 format convertors.

    1. The PC software isn't the same as the multiview. It is a control software, not a multiview software. 2. The lantency comes primarily from the camera and HDMI interface, not the switcher. That where professional cameras and SDI interface come in.

Set the ATEM switcher format to 1080i at 60Hz to get the camcoder to show, you can do that in the ATEM software settings. Once you get the non working cam working switch the newer cameras output format to match the switcher. I work in corporate AV and use BMD gear all the time with alot of different brands of camera's for different shows. Since the ATEM's don't have auto PnP we bring our own updowncross or scan converters for format switching. Also if were working with a new camera crew we would mail them ahead of time what format we require so we don't get signal issues on site.

@@VideoGizmology Also whats good to do is write down all the compatible formats including frame rates onto a list and stick it somewhere on your rig. For my mobile compact setup I have those 2U short rack cases and pasted the a sticker printed list on the side. The free rack space I use one of those Furman power distributors so I can connect laptops iphone ect ect all at the same place. Also my setup is wireless since I have a mini wifi router connected from the ATEM eithernet port and hidden in the case. I have it setup like this since I have to move around closer to the stage in middle of a conference room to calibrate a projector or something and control the ATEM remotely from my iphone app or on a tablet PC. And in some cases it be 20/30 meters away from where the ATEM is setup. Perhaps for your line of work it not be so nessesary, however it feels alot better and saves time dealing with less loose cables and such.

@@VideoGizmology I just quickly googled the canon XF200 and it lists (23.98/29.97p, 59.94i/p) so it technically should work with your ATEM.
For me I usually set my ATEM to 1080i 59.94 NTSC. And I tell all camera crews to set their output to the same. For me when it comes to technical issues is usually when I client brings a old PC laptop or the client doesn't know how to properly set the output correctly from their own pc. lol

Hey nice video. Pls pardon my rather long comment, I'm honestly excited about this video. I did a whooooole lot of search until I came across this video and somehow, it happens to be the only video that seem to answer my question. So, I'd really really really appreciate it, if I may get some clarification from you as to what settings are your Gh5/gh4/gh5s reccording format set to? I mean I've worked with pretty much exact same setup for a while and the problem I've always had is having to set cameras to AVCHD mode in order to get feed on ATEM, which I then have to set input format to 1080i50, where as 1080p25 is what I actually want. My question is, are your lumix cameras set to AVCHD mode is this setup in your video or.... This is working directly in the MP4/MOV modes, which i believe outputs true progressive signal to work with Atem when set to 25p inputs instead of 50i. If this is the case, then you have just solved my problem. By the way, the switcher I've mostly used were Atem 1me production studio 4k and Datavideo hs1700 or something. If this setup of yours works with the Lumixs without having to set cameras to AVCHD mode, then you've honestly solved my problem. Thanks.

    • @VideoGizmology

It's been years since I did this test and I ended up selling the ATEM, because I wasn't using it correctly. BUT, I believe I had the GH5/5S/4 set to either MP4 or MOV mode and not AVCHD. My frame rate was 30p. I don't recommend this combination with the ATEM. The panasonic GH series has issues with the HDMI out. They are also known for more latency than other cameras from the HDMI. You'll have more reliability with Panasonic Prosumer camcorders like the UX180. Obviously, Blackmagic cameras would be the best marriage to the ATEM.

@@VideoGizmology Thanks for the reply. I should probably look into going for this particular switcher. the TV studio pro 4k actually did solved the problem flawlessly as it's got updowncross converters on all inputs, it's just sort of much more expensive. Thanks again.

your problem is the hdmi from the cameras.
switch your cameras to SDI cameras, there will be about 10 lines latency.

    • @VideoGizmology
      @VideoGizmology  4 роки тому

It's not as simple as just switching to SDI cameras. Obviously, that's the professional way to do this kind of setup, but I typically work with low budgets, so I'm looking for a compromise. If you can afford SDI cameras, then there are no problems with this setup. But what if you can't? That's why I'm trying to figure out.

    • @AmauryJacquot

@@VideoGizmology what I'm saying is that there is no hdmi camera on the market that doesn't have a 4 to 6 frames delay.
      it's not the switcher's fault.

    Hi everyone!
I have a big problem, my streaming equipment is a...camcoder PANASONIC HC-V580W, PANASONIC HC-V500M, PANASONIC HC-VX870, and ATEM TVS HD, converter sdi to hdmi WIISTAR 3G and INTENSITY SHUTTLE USB 3.0. so the cuestion is....
When conecting camcoder panasonic in 1080i-59.94 the intensity shuttle captures video, but when conecting intensity shuttle and ATEM TVS HD, through converter sdi to hdmi, in 1080i 59.94, MEDIA EXPRESS does not capture video, only sound.
I change the setting 1080i (59.94; 50; 30; 20) on every device, but it did not work.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks!!!

I need HDMI inputs, not HD-SDI. I know it's not as professional, but those are just the cameras I have. I was looking into the MultiView 4, though, and buying 4 HDMI to HD-SDI adapters, but that was going to be too much.

Micro converter HDMI to SDI from BMC cost 39 usd pr unit. Practicaly «Free» I myself got 10 of those. www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/microconverters/techspecs/W-CONU-04 I`ve ben doing multicam recordings of concerts for over 10 years up to 14 cameras + multitrack audio into Cubase Pro. All of my cameras have hdmi only. Hdmi cable can only run for about 10 meters and thats not long enough. SDI cable can run for at least 40 meters. (Im Norwegian by the way)

Do I need two computers to stream on the Internet? I mean one computer for controlling the ATEM (using Blackmagic software) and the second computer for doing the streaming (using OBS or other such software)? Or is it possible to use the same computer both for controlling the ATEM and streaming?

    • @BKyle215
      @BKyle215 4 роки тому

Hey SP.... I would suggest using / having two computers for streaming if it is AT ALL possible. Though you COULD have one laptop do both, the machine will be handling quite a load for everything to be flowing smoothly. The laptop that's processing the stream is one task I want it focused on. (I wouldn't want to push the envelope). What's more, is the interactivity you would want to have with accessing the Control Panel Software during a shoot (media pool assets, Media Player sources, bringing up keyers, adjusting, etc), you won't be able to best monitor the stability of your stream at the same time. I use a very very inexpensive "enough to get by" PC that is dedicated to running the ATEM software. It can handle that. The better machine, MacbookPro, handles the processing of the stream. Hope this helps some. - Brian Kyle Atkins

You need a Software like Wirecast, from there you can stream almost everywhere but it's kind price, also you can use OBS which is good and simple enough depending on what you need.
1.- Get you signal from program output SDI on the back of the ATEM
2.- Plug the SDI to a Mini Converter ($145usd)
3.- Mini Converter to you computer through a Thunderbolt cable
4.- From the software select input Mini Recorder
5.- Setup your social media output and stream
For me worked 1080i 59.94 on the resolution and you have to setup your cameras on that setting.
      Good luck.

@@VideoGizmology Hey, ignore me - I must have been a bit grouchy this morning, I went through the same thing when I originally researched; there isn't actually much clear info on Blackmagic's website or UA-cam on this. The latency is to be expected as there is a lot of processing going on and even if you move to a top end 20k tricaster you will get the same issue - they are not designed to output real time as switching is processor intensive. I have this model and also had the 4k studio and for what it does...dont give up on it as it is really good value, and very powerful for multicam work.
To run different cameras you would need to add a device between the feed to convert the frame rate like a decimator - most of the ATEMs all want camaras with the same frame rate.
