    Great discussion! Great humor / heckling (I think it goes with the job!). The "elephant in the room" on reliability was an interesting discussion... I've hung on to an old Panasonic MX50 for that reason - and also because it's zero lag. I've also had ATEM critical fail (lock ups / loss of com with laptop) and also an input that decided (overnight) to not accept a PC screen signal. All reports suggest this new unit is a lot more fail-safe and faster to lock onto inputs too. That panel for simple switching is killer too - esp for portable use. I'm super curious to get it working on a V-Mount battery system with a small field screen, a wireless encoding box and a 4G mobile phone. It would effectively allow a mobile broadcast studio in a portabrace bag - perfect for arts festivals where you want to dash around and capture a schedule of events back to back. Mind blowing.

      Hi Chris..Thanks for your comment...I have been using the kit again for the last couple of days and it's been performing really well, I'm enjoyin using it...I like the idea of making it super portable, and it would be interesting to see what power it draws if using a V-mount battery...please let us know how you get on...cheers..steve

    Hello! Faced a problem. When connected to the Sony a6400 Atem television studio HD, only black screen and sound are output. The format on the camera and the switcher is correct. When connecting other models of cameras, everything is in order (for example, Fujifilm XT-3). How to solve a problem?

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  3 роки тому +2

      Are all the cameras outputting the same format and only the A6400 is black? It definitely sounds like a picture format issue. I don't have an A6400 to test... but I have had issues with some Sony cameras that will only output PsF format even when you want progressive. The ATEM might be seeing this as interlaced when you want progressive. As an experiment, try setting the ATEM to interlaced input (say 1080i) and see if the A6400 pops up even in 1080p. You might have to try this with just the A6400 connected first. If it works, you'll have to set all the other cameras for an interlaced output to get everything working together. Hope it helps... let me know if that's it.
      P.S. Obviously, the other thing to check is that the A6400 is running at exactly the same frame rate?

    • @YARIUS
      @YARIUS 3 роки тому

      @@extrashot Thanks for the answer! problem solved. It turned out that the sony a6400 always outputs 50/60 fps via HDMI, regardless of the selected frame rate for recording. Only the resolution & p/i can be selected manually for HDMI output.

      @@YARIUS That's great news.... glad you've got it sorted. Sony are weird with the whole PsF thing on domestic cameras... I think it's a hangup from the old broadcast compatibility issue of years ago! Take care.

      @@YARIUS I've been recently working with somebody who's using three old Panasonic camcorders for live production into an ATEM. I can't remember the model numbers but they were silver coloured mini tape things that should have been scrapped years ago. You know what... with everything set to 1080 interlaced and plenty of light... they looked great! Just proved you don't have to spend a fortune... Just don't make the lighting too moody!

      Ok review, having used the BM products before, would have been nice to have had you turn it around to see the inputs/outputs. but you did touch on the issue of reliability, which is real. My solution was to make sure it was rack mounted one slot away from other gear.that allowed air cooling over the power supply.

    Steve, thanks for this. How are you controlling the ATEM from the computer? No one seems to talk about that! I see a USB2 connector but I think that's only for setup. And I see an Ethernet connector, but MacBook Pros do not have Ethernet connectors (I have a USB-Ethernet dongle). TIA, KL

      Hi Kit, Yes, the USB is just to setup the ATEM (IP address, firmware etc), main control is always through the ethernet. I use a thunderbolt/ethernet dongle on my older macbook and this works really well once you've discovered the correct IP address for your adaptor. Any ethernet connection should be fine. Paul

      Must be honest... I had a hiccup early on when it was about a month old... two of the inputs failed for some reason. (actually, it may have been a rogue power spike down the SDI). Either way, Blackmagic swapped it without question and the replacement has been faultless for over two years. So I'm very happy now. These ATEMs have gone through several generations and improvements since this video was made, and I've been using newer versions in studio environments regularly. They now appear to be very reliable. 👍

    Do I need two computers to stream on the Internet? I mean one computer for controlling the ATEM (using Blackmagic software) and the second computer for doing the streaming (using OBS or other such software)? Or is it possible to use the same computer both for controlling the ATEM and streaming?
    Thanks!

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  4 роки тому

      Controlling the ATEM doesn't require much in the way of processing power from the computer, so it should be easy to also run the streaming software (OBS or similar), on the same PC... however, the ATEM needs to talk to the computer through the Ethernet port, so you'd need to split this off if you wanted to use it for the stream simultaneously? For safety, I'd probably want to add something like a second computer and a BlackMagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder (for the output of the ATEM) and keep it separate. Depending on how many sources and what you need in the way of effects... it might be better to go for the new ATEM Mini Studio Pro... much cheaper, and best of all, includes USB streaming so it appears on your computer like a webcam... ie ready to stream anywhere!

    QUESTION: I plan to use my switcher (ATEM Television Studio HD) with my MacBook Pro and display Power Point of Corporate events. The MacBook only has options of 1024 x 640, 1280 x 800, 1440 x 900 DEFAULT is 1680 x 1050 and lastly 1920 x 1200... All of which are not broadcast resolutions. I read online today: "Apple quietly notes that you also can "press and hold the 'Option' key while clicking the 'Scaled' button" in the "Displays" Control Panel to see more resolutions." Im not sure if this will give us a resolution we can use with out purchasing a scaler... What has been your experience... No one seems to mention this. Thanks!

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  7 років тому +1

      Hi Tariq, That's a really good question, and I must confess, I'm not sure. The ATEM requires all inputs to be the same resolution and frequency, so you'd need to get 1920x1080 50Htz (or whatever you're using) out of the mac. I think there's a way to get the mac to detect the display's through the HDMI output, but only if you switch everything on before connecting the HDMI cable to the ATEM. There is a button in settings for 'Detect displays'?
      Failing that, you may need to go through some other converter from the mini display port to get to a resolution that the ATEM will accept. There's also a piece of software for the mac called SwitchResX which might help.
      As soon as I can get my mac and and ATEM together, I'll try to test and report back. Sorry I can be more help.

      The new MacBooks have 4 Thunderbolt via USB Type C ports so I have to use an adaptor. The adaptor I have has 3 USB ports, 1 HDMI port, and 1 Ethernet. As you know, you must use Ethernet and USB to communicate the the Switcher. The HDMI out goes to one of the HDMI ports on the switcher, works like a charm! Here is a link to the USB Hub.

      Hi Andrew, The ATEM normally connects to your computer with Ethernet using the default (in-built) addresses from the factory.... but if you wanted to connect to a network or use custom addresses, then you'll need to use the USB to set those up on the ATEM with the BM settings software. The only other reason for using the USB is for firmware updates etc. I think it's only USB 2, so it's not fast enough for video data transfer etc. (in case you were wondering!). Take care, Paul

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  5 років тому

      Hi Daniel, is it the Studio HD model?... I don't have a Canon 60D but I believe you can only get a live HDMI output if the camera Isn't recording... and even then, is it clean without any black bars down the sides? It might be possible to get a clean HD output of the 60D with the 'Magic Lantern', firmware but I'm not able to test this without a camera. The main issue I've had with my ATEM is making sure all of the camera inputs are the same format... ie. if the inputs are expecting and working with say 50i, then other camera's won't appear if they can't also output the same 50i. For instance, my F5 will only output PsF even when internally recording 25P. To the ATEM this looks the same as interlaced, which means I then have to get interlaced out of the GH5 if I want to cut them together! Basically.... if you're only seeing black, then chances are, it's a different picture format to what the ATEM is expecting. Sorry I can't be more help. Paul

    • @extrashot

      Hi Hugh.... The ATEM Studio HD can totally do this, and the only thing to watch is that all the HDMI sources are matching resolutions and frame rates. In other words, the display settings on your MacBook Pro would probably have to be adjusted to match the two cameras. That way everything will stay in sync. However.... have you seen the new ATEM mini from Blackmagic? The details are here: www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/products/atemmini. Thing with this (apart from the lower price) is that you can TX from it directly.... including main output down USB... so you can connect to Zoom as if it's a webcam !!!
