@dbrandinni Biodiesel only works in a diesel engine. If you put it in a gasoline engine it will kill it. And what you are talking about is called black diesel and from what I have read about it, it only works on diesels that don't have sensors in the fuel system (the sensors must see through the fuel). It is also not known if using black diesel can harm your engine or fuel system.
If its 7 grams of Potassium Hydroxide per liter of veggie oil, how do you come up with 6.4 gr of PH. In the video you say (7:00 min in) "divide 7 by .8 = 6.4 gr" ...this is not the figure I get for 7 divided by .8 = 8.75 grams. However, I think the correct equation would be 7 x .8 = 5.6 grams of PH needed. Can you please say which is correct?
Ryan, is there any way you can send me the cost of all the pumps & heating tubes? Do you know the hour wage of a biodiesel technician? I am asking because we are doing a project in class regarding biodiesel production. Thanks for this video, we'll be making biodiesel in lab tomorrow, I'm excited!!
@mohaldan wvo= waste vegtable oil. how much contaminates are usually per volume in it and glycerin per volume?? can you send me some specifics as to making biodiesel in a pdf or something???
@ryanhall2013 Usually, only used oil will have high FFA content. The more FFAs present, the more acidic the oil is. The more acidic the oil, the more lye you need to neutralize it. Titration is the process used to figure how much lye you need. You will need to get a bottle that is exactly one liter, a burret tube with stand, a magnetic stirrer/ hot plate and an accurate digital scale. You will need to mix exactly 40 grams into a 1 liter solution of cold water. (distilled water is best)
@circusboy90210 In reality, you will probably use about 10 grams of lye per 1 liter of oil. It fluctuates on every batch though........ So you'll have to titrate for every batch of oil. If you use too much lye you will just get a lot of soap with your bio diesel. You'll just have to filter that out and it cuts down on the amount of diesel you get. If you don't add enough lye, you will have a fuel that has an extremely high point of spontaneous combustion. This means a low quality fuel.
the huge problem with any biodiesel fuel is is filtering. Known to mess up engines and costly repairs as results. Looking the best and economical ways to filter the fuel. Found a couple buy $18 or so cost is way too high for the ordinary person. Any good and logical ways some have found?
@circusboy90210 Sodium Hydroxide and Potassium Hydroxide are both suitable for use. These two bases are what are known as 'Strong Bases'. Other bases just don't work as well (if at all). All vegetable oils (mainly used oils) do have Free Fatty acids and Trans fatty acids. Along with triglycerides. If you were to use litmus paper to check the pH of vegetable oil, you would see that it is acidic. Everything has to be neutral to make bio diesel. Free Fatty Acids **** Google it.
@circusboy90210 So, now that you have everything set up, you will need to slowly pour you 1 molar lye solution into a burette tube to the 20 ml mark and position the 100 ml beaker of oil and phenolphthalein on top of a magnetic stirrer directly under the burette tube. It is important that the oil is constantly being stirred and kept hot or you may get false calculations. It is also important that everything be EXACT!!! Ok, so you are ready to perform the titration now.
@circusboy90210 It is best to do this titration 3 or more times and average the results. So here's what you need to do after titration is complete: look at the burrett tube. Let's say that the tube was filled to 20 ml and you now have only 10 ml........... this means that you only needed 10 ml of lye to neutralize 100 ml of oil. Multiply the 100 ml of oil by 10 to get 1000 ml. 1000 ml = 1 Liter. Do the same with the lye solution used. 10 ml x 10 = 100 ml of lye solution and convert to liter
@circusboy90210 This 40 grams of lye is equal to one Mole (A chemical unit of measurement)...... so you will have one molar (or one mole per liter) lye solution in the one liter bottle. At this point, you have your beaker filled to the 100 ml mark with hot, filtered oil (about 130 Fahrenheit). You will also need to add a few drops of indicator (phenolphthalein) to the 100 ml of oil. This will turn pink after the acidic oil has been neutralized through titration.
@ryanhall2013 lye is not the only chemical used as a base is what I was getting @ as a practical solution your explanation of the process was jumbled @ best . i took chemistry .. and understand all the other things.
@circusboy90210 Open the valve on the burette and let the lye solution drip into the oil. When the solution begins to turn pink, turn the valve to a slow drip. You will see the pink go away but come back again shortly........... When the solution turns pink and stays pink, you have successfully completed titration. If the solution is a dark pink, you have gone too far! (you have added too much lye solution) So stop AS SOON AS YOU SEE PINK THAT DOES NOT GO AWAY!
No entendí estos cálculos en min 6:40. si son 7 gr por litro de aceite y midió 800ml de aceite vegetal, que no son 5.6gm. De cualquier manera 7 dividido entre 0.8 es mayor que 7. = 8.75 . dios....
hi there, raw vo= non used vegtable oil. wvo=used vegetable oil.

Main problems of biodiesel is winter viscosity. Below 10 dgr. celsius, it gets over 20cSt of viscosity.Sounds like trying to start the car at -30 celsius with regular diesel.
I don't know what special calculator you are using for your math, but my calculator says that 7 divided by .8 = 8.75... Please tell me what store you got yours so i won't go there. Ps: I definitely wll not be using your calculations to make my bio-diesel.
2:20 .. don't be confused with ml and "normal" unit of measuring?? unless you haven't noticed the only ones still using ounces and gallons are the US and Burma.
@circusboy90210 Oh, I forgot to mention one thing........... Make sure you check the oil for moisture content before using it. If there is any moisture, you will want to boil the oil until there is no water left. This, of course is after you have filtered it. You will want to add your lye into your methyl alcohol (methanol) first and then slowly mix it in with your hot oil at about 130 Fahrenheit (54-55 Celsius) You need about 200 ml of methanol for every 1 liter of oil used.
@circusboy90210 Cool. I could be wrong. You could be what you say you are. Maybe this could be the beginning of an interesting association between us! Have a great day and be safe!
@circusboy90210 If you can't understand, then you probably shouldn't even try to produce bio diesel. I answered your question in pretty much the simplest terms possible. I am a chemical engineering major doing research in alternative fuels and petroleum. I assure you that what I explained has a lot to do with FFAs...... Just do us both a favor and please educate yourself a little before trying this.
Lol he said 7/0.8, which is 8.75. When actually I suppose he meant 7*0.8 like you said. I had a feeling that he is not super educated, based on how he handles equipment and while potassium hydroxide is somewhat hygroscopic, it will not “kill” the process, it will only make the weighing less accurate, smh.
@ryanhall2013 ok in laymens terms so I can translate your run on sentences .. thank you for your response though. not sure how this applies to high ffa' oils.
@circusboy90210 I'm pretty sure that if this place that you speak of is successful, they have chemical engineers like myself (Soon to be) and chemists that do exactly what I just explained to you. I have toured 5 different petroleum plants and 2 bio diesel plants. I have worked in these plants on Co Op and internships and have spoken with / worked with the engineers who produce these fuels. So tell me about how this facility works that you know so much about.
"Don't be confused between mililiters and your normal units of measure"? (2:14). Mililiters ARE normal. Ounces, pounds and such are weird. The USA is about the last country in the world holding on to them.
It’s literally elementary school math in the rest of the world, I have seen people in high school in European countries and Asian countries doing calculus, yet most adults in the US have problems figuring out the conversion and calculation of fractions and decimals.
@ryanhall2013 I don't know why don't you tell me how it is to be a few genes shorter than the rest of the gene pool??hahaha your a real hoot. I"m going to be owning my own factory soon you will be dreaming of having a job in the industry I will be a captain of lol. you have guaranteed your resume going to the round file of my office sir. have a day. :P
@circusboy90210 So about the understandable terms. What is it that you do not understand? Do you not know what a beaker, hot plate, and a burett are? Do you not understand titration? Do you know what a gram, liter, milliliter and mole are? Have you ever even heard of methanol or lye? Did you ever even take chemistry in high school? lol
@ryanhall2013 you are not explaining this in understandable terms I live 1/2 mile from a multi million gallon per year facility and they don't work anything like what you talk like.
@circusboy90210 I'm also working on my own bio diesel prototype for my senior project and I already have 4 job offers for when I graduate in the Spring. So I don't think I'll be 'dreaming' of a job. So what was the test that you took to find out that you have 165 IQ? Lol........ And I bet your neighbors just love you, circus boy! ha ha Everyone needs someone in the neighborhood to swap B.S stories with ....... lol
@circusboy90210 Ha ha ha ha......... You are so funny. I already own my own factory. It's called a poop factory. Better yet, it's called a dog. Too bad I'm losing money in my factory though. As far as the Google goes, I have used Google quite a bit with research papers in college. I always give credit where credit is due and I've always gotten As. I go to Tennessee Technological University (comparable to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech). They have no problem accepting my work.
@ryanhall2013 my channel??? wow you obviously have not cruised my favorites. bright anything I do I excell in I was the #1 vendor for Ringling Circus for many years & set sales records that still have not been approached. I have a 165 IQ. I'm working on a prototype biodisel factory with the support of many different suppliers who are sponsoring my efforts with equipment @ their cost for materials. you did use a 4 letter word. any college will reject your research if you google it.
@ryanhall2013 good for you hope you market your product well. I will not work for other people to make them millionares. I ace the asvab when I was in high school placement test for university gave me the iq score. however they are not b.s. stories I allready have lead many more lives and experiences than many people explore in a dozen liives, been everywhere in usa & canada many times. I know what I'm talking about or I keep my mouth shut.
What's this "Normal Units of Measurement?", Its just you Yanks that don't know metric. Hope you guys catch up some time! Hahaha. Great Video though guys. Informative! Cheers
I dont know why all you fellers are messin with all of these dangrous chemicalls and such to make this liquid. I have been using my daddy's ram air parts on all my farm equipment and cars for years. when I go down to get my fishing bait and things I can smell that stuff at the station. I cant figure why people use it instead of air engines like my pa made. I mean it's air, it dont smell and it dont cose me nutthin.
@circusboy90210 I don't believe you when you say you understand everything. It's obvious, after viewing your channel, that you're not exactly bright. No one is cussing and I do use proper English. I also doubt that you know that much about bio diesel production. And yes, Googling things can be considered research if you find a site that has good credentials.
@ryanhall2013 wow cussing to prove a point?? you must not have mutch real depth in knowledge in this nitch field. you have not said anything here I don't allready know. I'm looking to draw out people in this field who are able to spread knowledge not ignorance. I allready knew the answer just trying to get people to expose the truth on here. googling things is not research.
Hey Man, Thank you for making and taking the time to show the process and the equipment that is available. God Bless

Methanol is an evaporating solvent right. You keep as such without covering

yes, 7 x .8 is 5.6 grams not 6.4 grams. somebody should really review these before there put out there.

Damn I knew I should of taken chemistry.
@circusboy90210 Please read from bottom to top for these comments to make sense............ lol As always, BE SAFEEE!!!!!
Tell me about it...!
HIs voice reminds me of Bruce from Family Guy
I tried to do this but my neighbor thought I was cooking meth and called the cops on me....?
@circusboy90210 Better yet, Google "free fatty acids bio diesel." The first link explains FFAs........... Hope this helps.
He meant 7 TIMES .8. He also got the math wrong either way. at 7 grams per liter, he needs to add 5.6 grams of KOH.
"Don't be confused between mililiters and your normal units of measure"? (2:14). Mililiters ARE normal. Ounces, pounds and such are weird. The USA is about the last country in the world holding on to them.
Wrong math! Multiply by .8, don't divide. If you divide a number by less than 1, the answer will be larger than the original number, not less.
It’s literally elementary school math in the rest of the world, I have seen people in high school in European countries and Asian countries doing calculus, yet most adults in the US have problems figuring out the conversion and calculation of fractions and decimals.
NaOH is cheaper than KOH, and does the same job
Spelled biodiesel wrong
Do not overdo it, some people drink methanol.

Lol all that equipment and shit, still can’t figure out 7g/L*0.8L (not divided) is 5.6g. Goes to show you money can’t buy you knowledge.
Don't do this is making it look hard and dangerous lol
(centrifuge)
with used oil the best
he uses metric (milleitres) then uses farenheit. lol.
