Not true. They used to have Amateur Nights on Wednesdays, and the winners would make it to the TV tapings. I think later on, they might've stopped doing it that way because some acts couldn't get cheers at a train station.
I think it was more because his voice didn't project. Lack of self confidence actually causes his brain to make his voice quieter the longer he sang (hiding in plain sight). He probably does alright when he is by himself or in a small group.
