Genting Skyworlds, once known as 20th Century Fox World Malaysia was under construction for almost a decade before getting itself into legal trouble with Disney who almost made them cancel the park altogether. But surprisingly the park that ultimately did open would include a select number of Fox Properties such as Ice Age, Night at the Museum and Independence Day. So how did this seemingly insignificant theme park in the mountains of Malaysia end up getting involved in one of the biggest theme park controversies of the last decade?

I went to the Genting Skyworlds for 2 days during their soft opening and I had a blast!! Sure, lots of rides weren't open but there was a lot of care put into the themeing. Especially Robots Land (Rivet Town). It was BRILLIANT. As a big fan of the original movie it felt so fun to take silly photos with the robots and my gosh the theming for that tiny tiny area was so well done. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I was silly obsessed with Rivet Town, I genuinely planned my whole trip around going to that tiny land! The Rio land is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and the Ice Age land looked amazing in the mountain fog. I did wish that more rides were open, but it was still a fun couple days!
To be honest, they did a really good job with what they had, so it's a big shame to hear what had happened prior to opening! Another weird thing is that they had all the gifts ready for 20th Century Fox world. I regret not buying a shirt, because the label on the back says "20th Century Fox World" instead of "Genting Skyworlds", and they were selling Sons of Anarchy and Aliens Merchandise! Fool I was to not take a chance to own a piece of history!
Fun fact, Genting originally was in talks about being turned into a Universal Studios rather than 20th Century Fox, but it fell through due to Universal's desire to have very specific designs that would have been very expensive, especially in this specific area.

2:57 "though no one seemed to be too upset about losing this park"
Well, I WAS!! 😅 Me and my family wanted to go there for my 10th birthday, but when we got there, HALF of the indoor was blocked by some GIANT YELLOW WALL with some Ultraman Live show posters on it. I was devastated, having wonderful memories there with my cousins back then. Although thankfully, there was a live stage performance by Lionel Richie at that time, so i wasnt't TOO upset, BUT STILL!
Despite that, it was worth the long wait, and now it is once again considered to be Neverland to me 😁

Honestly, it seems like an incredibly put together park in terms of theming. Genting has issues with keeping budget and schedules, but they seem like perfectists for what they do get done.

Unless Disney was planning on incorporating those particular Fox properties to their own parks, they should have allowed Genting to retain those like Alien. Last I checked, Disney isn't building a Sons of Anarchy ride (?) or an Alien one at their parks. Disney would still be getting a licensing fee for them. Ridiculous.
I'm surprised they allowed them to build the Independence Day rides, though. I guess since the sequel flopped, Disney didn't care if they had it at their park.

8:07 - "And now, back to that lawsuit." I don't think I've ever heard that statement delivered so cheerfully. I'm going to use that delivery the next time I'm in court. Great coverage, I never knew about this until now. Indirectly it seems Disney found a way to hurt someone else's theme park. What a surprise. I'm sure it wasn't intentional. With the recent news of China possibly nationalizing their theme parks ( thus plucking two out of Disney's ownership ) it seems like Disney's thin ice is getting more and more precarious every day. Good for Genting Skyworlds. I hope they get a different sponsor and IPs and really make it big.

I was very fortunate to have visited SkyWorlds during their Dressed Rehearsal and Soft Opening period. I’m already planning to visit again for their grand opening soon.
I was also informed with the new IP licensing agreement with Disney, SkyWorlds had to remove IPs that are not “family-friendly” like the Alien versus Predator and Son of Anarchy. Not sure if this is 100% true but the possibility is quite high since these are the only two IPs that had to be removed from the park.
There’s also an article about SkyWorlds discussing possible future commitments from other IP partners for “Andromeda Base” themed “world” since AvP licensing has been revoked.

I visited Genting SkyWorlds last September. A third of the rides were under "technical rehearsal". For RM160, it is not worth it but we make it up by taking our favourite rides multiple times. The park is well organised and easy to navigate. The innovative use of app download to book ride slots and plan your itinerary makes your visit convenient. They have complimentary picture taking all around the park where you are required to take a selfie, upload onto the app and through AI, transfer all pictures of you that was taken by staff photographers. This, I wasn't comfortable with, hence ignored getting my photos taken.
The cool climate makes the visit worth it as it contributed in keeping my energy high throughout the day. A stark contrast to my experience in Universal Studios Singapore, in which I was drenched with both water (from rides) and sweat.
Overall, I would like to visit again when all rides are operational.

Plenty of beef between Genting and Disney before Disney bought Fox. Genting bought the old Miami Herald building with plans to build a casino there. Disney had long used its influence in the state to keep it casino-free, and Genting failed to get enough legislators to change the law. So Disney had already foiled one Genting project before this one.

If I took a trip to Malaysia to Genting Skyworlds I would love if they could expand the Robots: Rivet Town area more. I mean I love the movie, but would also love if there was more than just 2 rides, a bakery, and a gift shop. Maybe sometime in the future they could think about adding entertainment or possibly meet and greets.
I mean I know that they did what they did to do in such a small space. But to me it's too tiny and not a lot to do. If anything I would take away some space or that one roller coaster in the Alien Section or the Planet of the Apes section. But I would know that would effect people who like those two franchises. I miss the old indoor and outdoor TP too. The new one called skytropolis indoor theme park, some of the old indoor and outdoor rides were refurbished and use back to fit the new theme n concept.

The rollercoaster and the glider is such a scam we waited for the rollercoaster for an HOUR!! as soon as 6:30pm hit , they told there was a 'technical difficulty' same situation for the glider..

This park definitely suffers from operational issues even with the few rides that they have, it's a huge red flag for most people.
Hopefully they can improve on it.

Oh just stop playing with the racist card... Genting's number one market is the chinese from China so I'm not that surprised if the signs includes Chinese translation.
The park opening announcement still have 3 languages Malay, English and Chinese.
