  • Canada’s Wonderland, Canada’s premiere theme park was refered to as Disneyland of the North when the theme park opened in 1981. Today Canada's Wonderland the largest theme park in Canada. Located in Vaughan Ontario, just outside Toronto, the park is owned by Cedar Fair and it’s the most visited seasonal theme park in all of North America. Today it gives thrill seekers their dose of thrill like with Yukon Striker, Leviathan & Behemoth while providing entertainment for the entire family- but in the beginning, not everyone was saying Yabba Dabba doo! Canadians had never seen anything of this magnitude and the park faced a lot of criticism and roadblocks. From initial construction to the days of Paramount Canada's Wonderland and beyond, there's a lot you don't know. So let's explore the secret history of Canada's Wonderland- Disneyland of the North. Hope you all enjoy this video! Sharing the Canada’s Wonderland story has been a video I’ve been wanted to do for ages. I’ve been going to the park just as long as I’ve been going to Disney and there’s so much about the beginnings of this park that aren’t widely talked about. I’m having so much fun making these deep dive mini doc episodes so enjoy :)

Did you know about the little controversy over the name? I found out about it when I moved to BC. A little mini-golf business in Abbotsford BC had a legal battle over the name "Wonderland" with Canada's Wonderland in 1998. Wonderland, now known as Castle Fun Park, had 24 hours to legally change it's name before bigger problems would occur to the mini golf business.

This entire story is fantastic, but I think my favorite part is Roy Disney's brilliance of suggesting Cincinnati - because he effectively gave them what they wanted, while keeping them as far away from the Disneyland market as possible.

I feel so honored that you featured Canada‘s Wonderland on your channel! I actually live two minutes away… L O L! I have been going since it opened in 1981 when I was a small child. I remember this theme park being built in the middle of vast farmland with not a house in sight for miles. Now it’s a very dense and extremely populated city since the founding of the theme Park. Really fun to watch the video and reminisce with the changing times from the past. Thanks again. ❤️🙏🏻
Still, Disneyland and Disney World are significantly better at customer service, park maintenance and theming.

I grew up in maple. On quiet days in the 80’s you could hear the music and see the mountain, and we would watch the fireworks from family’s backyards. It got harder as the town built up. I also worked there as a photographer during summer in high school and college. A lot of us really miss the flume ride and some of the other removed flat rides and the sky rider. Hanna Barbara land is especially missed. There used to be great Smurf content as well. Some of the rides are in need of a little help, like stunt coaster, but we love it just the same. I would really love for them to remove time warp and get something new in that area, but time will tell. Counting down to opening day!

I've been going to Wonderland since I was a child. I have to say I loved the Paramont days when they made the ride themes a little more special. Now i bring my own child there and we get gold passes which incude Halloween haunt and Winterfest. I appreciate the effort Cedar has done but there is so much more potential they could do with each ride regarding the lines, music on the rides, just the little details to make it more of an experience instead of just one ride to the next.

17:40 emphasis on WERE top notch. Because ever since Cedar Fair purchased the park they gave up on turning on those special effects. There used to be a time where all you'd hear were helicopter noises. Now it's just silence before it continues into the black tunnel 😂 But if the trade-off is getting hyper and giga rides, i'll take it!
I love Wonderland. It's definitely no where near Disney-level theme parks, but it's got a massive selection of coasters for thrill seekers and recent efforts into bringing theming back is getting it closer and closer to Disney territory. I'll be curious to see how they expand in the future though since they are quite constrained right now with the urban sprawl around the park. Hopefully one day they'll build a parking garage so the park can expand into the current parking lot area.

The history of this reminds me of Great America in Santa Clara, California. Back in the 90s, it was bought by Paramount and also had similar renovations Canada's Wonderland had like the Star Trek characters walking around the park, there was also a Top Gun ride, Nickelodeon and Hanna-Barbara cartoon theme. I remember when it was like that back when I was kid, such a great experience. And then it was also bought by Cedar Fairs later on. I wanted someone to do the history of Great America, so this is probably the closest one I'll see. I'm loving these videos you are doing!

I mean I grew up going to canada's wonderland, back when paramount owned it. I loved it as a kid but when I went back a few years ago I did notice the thing just felt like... a bunch of rides. Having been to Disneyworld and Universal, it felt lacking the theming that I really enjoyed there, and I didn't go back for years. But seeing this video and knowing they're making efforts to put theming into it (or back into it I guess!) I might make some time to go now

I’m so glad they’re investing money into better theming again, and into more rides. There’s still some rides that are extremely rough due to age but I have faith these will be fixed or replaced. I hope they will re-track their wooden coasters, especially Minebuster now that it’s finally in its themed land.

As a Canadian living in Toronto, there is so much I did not know about Wonderland. Thanks for sharing!

Love how you released video on Disneyland's 67th anniversary. Funny, the opposition at first. The lovely theming the Paramount "purge" Cedar revitalization. I have a Press kit from the park. It might be 1981. Disney (after Walt) helped Judge Roy Hofheinz with Houston's AstroWorld 1968. Making us the 4th major themed park in America. 5th If you count Knott's (but Knott's didn't have Timber Mountain Log ride yet or Fiesta Village. Great video documentary of the tumultuous road a themed park endures during its life.

Grew up beside this park! In fact, our residential street was adjacent to the main entrance (only separated by a highway). So happy to see it featured! :)

I would have loved to have visited Canada's Wonderland and King's Island back when they had the Hanna-Barbera themed sections. I love the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

I used to live in Brampton, which was about a 45 minute drive from Wonderland. In fact, on a clear day if you were high enough, you could see Wonderland in the distance. Wonderland was soooooo fun, and I miss it a lot.

Went a few days ago with no advanced research so found myself trying to work out what the themes were. Felt like they designed the fantasy bit then just themed the rest as "rides". This handily explains why. The random backlot cafe with world foods inside was especially jarring (though the food was good). I hope they continue to bring back original theming intentions to tie the areas together. It's a great Amusement Park, just missing the cohesion of a great Theme Park.

I'm noticing the history of Canada's Wonderland's theming is the same as Carowinds. Both started with Hanna Barbera characters, later switched to Nickelodeon, then were finally taken over by Snoopy.
