‘The Shining’ Star Shelley Duvall Dead at 75

- Shelley Duvall, once one of Hollywood's rising stars, died in her sleep from complications from diabetes. She was 75. Her long-time boyfriend made the announcement. "My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us," said Dan Gilroy. "Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.” Duvall's most famous role was playing Jack Nicholson's wife in "The Shining." The film turned her into a screen icon. In 2002, Duvall walked away from Hollywood and became a recluse.
I literally googled her recently to see if she was still alive, and I was like "Oh thank goodness, she is doing well", and now this happened...RIP.

He would randomly fire gunshots on set to keep everyone scared for their scenes

I agree. Jack Nicholson performed the role of Jack Torrance as a cruel and abusive husband and father from the beginning of the movie. Whether that was Kubrick's choice or Nicholson's, I dunno, but I have always thought it was the weakest part of "The Shining"

@@spatchmo6938 Having read the book several times at this point, I'd have to say the movie's adaptation was pretty good. The movie had some differences--the only difference is that I didn't feel like Jack *tried* to be a better father after his drunken mistake involving his son; he always felt annoyed with his family. I did like the representation of him trying to stay off of alcohol, it was similar in both book and movie.
That Razzie nomination for Duvall was well-deserved.
Shelley Duvall entertained many people with the roles she played ~ which she was exceptional at. I wish her to Rest In Peace.
Why did you have to point out that her car had a lot of trash? The GrimmLife interview was great, Shelley still had a sense of humor and told great stories. She obviously wasn't well physically. Typical tabloid TV reporting. RIP icon 💖🙏🌄🌈🕊️
I get what you mean but I don't think it was a malicious point-out; it was just something to be noted because celebrities aren't often seen in that light. Shelley, despite her fame with The Shining, was just like me or you. She didn't live a glamorized life of high well-being. She had a tragic life and to see her in such a state is disheartening. Rip.

Rip Shelley Duvall, Lost but not forgotten
In this hard, hellish world, Miss Duvall was truly a sweet, beautiful innocent angel. The world is hardest on the nicest, most precious of people. May she RIP.
So true. I remember reading a magazine interview she did right after dating Paul Simon and thinking “wow, she is really sweet and nice people can be famous too”. It was an inspiring little article.
Anyone else remember “Shelley Duvall’s Mother Goose Rock N Rhyme Land” video from the 90s? Not to mention Fairytale Theatre. She was a huge part of my childhood on VHS. She was so sweet and talented. RIP
I had at least 2 of her Bedtime Stories tapes but I don't remember which ones. I'm glad somebody else remembers, this video didn't mention them once!
Mother Goose Rock N’ Rhyme was so weird and filled with so many big names at the time. The director choice was certainly inspired. It was the one who directed the music video for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Don’t Come Around Here No More.” She met her boyfriend Dan Gilroy from the 1980’s pop band The Breakfast Club on that movie and they were together until she died.
I remember watching that Dr. Phil episode and even then I knew he exploited her and her struggles. Shame on him! RIP Shelly Duvall.
This was a disrespectful tribute. She will be forever remembered for the strides she made in children’s educational televison, especially by her young female audiences,; for her charity work, for her many independent film roles, for her grace and charm. Not for some stupid horror role that traumatized her and likely derailed her mental wellness. RIP beautiful Shelly Duvall.🌱🧚♂️
The Shining is probably her most enduring movie though, which is incredible because the movie got negative reviews when it was first released and she got nominated for a Razzie for it.

Your take is just as off the mark. Whether you think horror is "stupid" or not, it's a genre millions of people love, and The Shining is considered one of the greatest movies in the filmography of one of the greatest directors. For christ sake stop sniffing your farts for 5 seconds. Obviously she did other stuff, no one is saying otherwise.
And by trying to identity-politicize her as a figure by narrowing her appeal to "young women," you're downplaying how universal her talents were.

It was piled almost up to the window. How is that not filled? I could see a couple things on the floorboard or a wrapper in the seat, but that was excessive. If your car is like that, then your car is filled with garbage too. If it's enough to fill a large garbage bag, it's more than normal.

That interview with her in her car was actually a very nice interview. GrimmCollective on UA-cam. Also she was great in Roxanne with Steve Martin. Nobody ever mentions that film when they talk 80s comedy classics but they should.

Similarly, I just had that interview from GrimmCollective recommended to me about a week or two ago. It was a very touching video.

I recall the Director of the Shinning, severely mentally abused her on set to get the best acting from her. It worked, it give us some of history’s best acting on screen. But the cost was too high, she was extremely stressed, isolated, and wrecked her mental health. When asked why she left the industry, she stated her experience on the set of the Shinning was the biggest reason. Rest in peace, and may no suffer no more Shelley Duvall.
I'll never forget her famous "Hello, I'm Shelley Duvall" quote from Faery Tale Theaters. It's even used on TikTok.

I always remember watching her as a kid on Faerie Tale Theatre. For all the fairytales and happy endings I remember, she never got her happy ending.
Same can be said for Jack Nicholson. And yes I think it is highly disrespectful for the paparazzi to be taking photos of him when clearly he looks too disheveled and tired to be dealing with them
