Cat Stevens was huge in the early seventies. His music always reminds me of being a little kid. The song is short. The studio version is less than three minutes long. Stevens is British, so the US flag likely reflects that he was on tour in the US. Springsteen sings about the American Dream, but you might be thinking of "American Pie" maybe? "... the good old boys drinking whiskey and rye singing, this'll be the day that I die..."
