Rasheed, a friend of mine in the university, owned a 1986 AMG 190E. It was a beast!
The car's water pump failed during a night trip to a club about 120 miles from campus, making the engine overheat badly.
Rasheed filled the radiator with water from a roadside stream and decided to complete the remaining 100 miles in less than half the average time leaving our 1996 Hyundai Elantra in the dust.
All this happened in 2002 to a 16-year-old car with nonexistent service history (it was a second-hand European export to Nigeria)
Mercedes don't make cars like that anymore
Rasheed is dead now-he was electrocuted trying to adjust his TV antenna in the rain.
The car did not kill him.

I like the part about "bank vault build quality". My dad used to have a 2005 E350, and I miss the satisfaction of closing the doors. Such a perfect fit and sound.
Had an 03 CLK500 and damn those doors were heavy, miss closing them too. Sold it at 200000 miles and it didn’t have a single squeak or rattle

Early AMG cars always take me back to watching Miami Vice as a kid in the 80s. The Hammer was and is legendary. I didn't know the production numbers were so low. The impact they had was all out of porportion.
W124 sedan and coupe are one of the beautiful cars of all time. They design stood the test of time.

Sadly it was a dog with flea's and the owner lied to my face and sold me a could and should have never been around the block let alone 12 hour drive back home.
I stripped the LS and siz=x speed out if it and intend to fit a 3.2ltr M104 turbo and 3 speed and bring it back to its former glory 🦘🦘
Barnfind stories like the red Hammer are so awesome! I had a '70 Challenger find me much like that Hammer did, stories like this are the apotheosis of the car hobby!

I was lucky enough to see the transformation of this car at Luxe. I still remember the day that I showed up and the shop employees showed me how bad the paint was. And the smell...enough to make you gag. The old battery acid smell throughout the interior was rancid. But then fast forward and to see how well it cleaned up and the smell removed....priceless. This car is a beauty! Congrats Stephen!

I love these cars! My daily driver is a 1991 300SE, the last of the W126 S classes, and even 30 years later with no real service history, having sat outside for likely it's whole life, it's still a comfortable and reliable daily driver.
I have a special place in my heart for pre merger Mercedes AMG cars. I am the second owner of an 82 500SE AMG Euro. Have had for 30 years.
I’ve started with a 95 C36, not exactly pre-merger, but still a classic AMG. Also have an 89 190e 2.6 straight six manual. Both are great cars and very fun to drive
Gary Primm not only built the Nevada border town of Primm, but among his many properties, he owned a spectacular 10-acre private compound in Las Vegas, in the shadows of the MGM Grand. I was invited on a private tour of the home and its grounds, which included reinforced underground tunnels, a massive checker-flag covered parking garage, a game room with every kind wild animal you can imagine, a dog washing building, mandatory and elaborate movie theater and two-sided grand staircase among a few of its over the top features. After his divorce, he leased the home out to Michael Jackson who was looking to escape Neverland Ranch following his trial. In fact, Michael was under contract to purchase the home from Gary with the proceeds of his "This is It" tour. When Michael passed and the tour was cancelled, Gary put the home up for sale, at a price several million dollars less than Michael had agreed to pay. This Hammer was just one of his many incredible machines. Another enjoyable story, Ed!
Man this brings back memories. My first car was a straight 6 300E that I got that had been my Great Aunts. This inside looked just like this, it only had 17k miles when I got it in 2003 even though it was built in 87. It was a great car, but because it had sat for so long I ended up having to get the whole engine rebuilt. I think I drove it till around 2010. Good times. I loved the pneumatic door locks, I always thought those were super cool, and the mono wiper!

What a great story. I have an 86 300E, and although it is not an AMG, I have restored it to virtual perfection and love the car. I have a 2014 SL63 AMG, which is also an amazing car, but there is something about that W124, that I have owned for almost 25 years.
Congrats on your Hammer, I trust you will also keep it for many years, as it truly is a landmark car.

I know of a W124 AMG Hammer that has been left to rot on a patch of land near Hamburg Germany. It's literally 200ft away from me right now.
Might be worth trying to snag that up if you can, best case scenario someone else tries to buy it off you to restore, worst case scenario you have the coolest "what the fuck is that rusting away in the middle of your yard" object.
What are they worth? This one is in terrible condition and needs a full restoration. I think the owner wants $32k (converted from euros) for it. That was the last I heard anyway.
It might just be a w124 with the AMG body kit, those were pretty common

a clean example sold for 200k euros back in 2019 so I imagine with car market right now it’s worth alot more

Small world. I went to high school in St. George with the previous owner's son. He had told me all about this car, but I never got the chance to see it in person. It was his dad's baby. Glad to see its got a new lease on life!

The Grail of AMG In my opinion, Red Sow, 450 SEL 6.9 and the AMG Hammer, the 500E probably gets a special mention too :-)
AMG Hammer was my introduction to AMG, I read bout them in car magazines. Like the Ford Shogun, and other oddball go fast jewelry that showed up in the 80s car magazines, the Hammer was one of those things that was just "cool."

man oh man. i remember the picture/photo in this video of the Hammer with that Porsche behind it. cant remember if it was a road and track article, but i used ot see the cars in British AutoCar. i drooled over that thing!!! first saw the CE, then the 4 door then the Estate, i was truly blown away!! also saw how it blew supercars into the ground, and this was unheard of back then. built to last.
we had a 1976 230.6, was tuned. i was like 8 or 9, and it was bored and stroked, had tripple side draughts on it was pretty much well tuned but reliable as hell. we, well my mom drove it one day on a road here, in Cape Town, South Africa, and we came up against a M635 CSI, yes the 24 valve M motor. not the clock read to 230 km/h on the Benz, log story short, it was bouncing at the bottom of the speedo. 745i too, same story(we had the 24 valve motor here and not the 3.5 turbo from Europe), an di serious, it literally blew every car my mom or dad raced. from Porsches,to Audi's(please remember this was before people knew how to make power out of turbo cars like today, and not saying nobody knew how, just not as widely spread as today). weeven had some special cars here like a 333i BMW, which was called an M car due to our poor quality in fuels, we were allowed to call it an M car once the work was done and BMW Germany signed off on it. we even had a Sierra XR8, a car that came as a 4 or V6 only, until for racing reasons, homologations, they fitted a 5.0 V8 in it. we has some crazy cars here due to political bans on o ur country and low fuel quality. what great times.
on this Hammer, you one lucky dude. only thing for ME though, to me, a Hammer was supposed to always be Black, just looks more evil. but still damn fine car man!!!!
I'll never be able to afford a Hammer but I have had a W210 Estate E55 for the last 4 years which is a fun old thing to bomb around in.
To the day my 99 c43 amg was by far the best 4 door car I have driven, not much could touch it with 5 people in it

I live in Vegas. I think I know what house that was behind. I did some fire sprinkler work at it. I had a 500sl at the time and when I saw that I had no clue what it was but the body blew me away. I’m sad I didn’t bother to ask more questions about it. Holy shit. It’s beautiful.

In the late 80 my cousin imported from Germany a black mid 80s 560SEC AMG widebody. The car was a beast but always was broke, maybe due to the cat conversion? But a special car bc it was just so unique.

you guys are hero's!!!! . im a european tuning fanatic!!i got all the original magazines from the 80's i was a Ruf fan before the yellowbird because r&t did a small review on there scr g body 911. i was in front of the tv for the 1st airing of miami vice and my engineer father turned my burago diecast cars into a koenig special bb512 and made me dp 935's and a bb magic top c126. these younger guys know 80's tuners from video games its so strange to me. i adore premerger cars. i got 8 variation of the 380sec matchbox and tried to turn any merc diecast into a AMG. they are finally getting the notice they have always deserved. that is because of champions such as yourself and guys like hodgeman, blakely teniman who hunt for everything they can regarding the poorly documented info from AMG. my dream is to start a restomod company for premerger cars. 2 choices true to the original but with carbon panels, computer controlled eng mangmnt, recreations of the cse recaros and nakamichi sound systems or an original looking car but with crazy any of the badass new AMG motors, custom 21" mono-bloc recreations diffusers, belly pans and all the super tech from the current amg and tuning companies . i definately have to do a w126 estate and a 124 pickup then have pacakges like a euro spec r107 carbon bodied car on basically a gtr blk series or the badboy og- send us your old w124 sedan we send you black our production hammer tribute. only sedans only black w6.2blower or 4.0tt all have custo setup colover package and 4 recaro cse buckets. like delorean you can get it in any color as long as its black. its would be the singer inspired idea but for premerger style cars. i forgot twin turbo v12 w116's with modern sized penta recreations. oh dear..... im salivating. if anyone wants to use this idea, i will happily tell you all about it. it dont want anything except to keep people thing and building this platform. so sir are ACES. please continue to share your premerger passion with all of us. cheers

A Hammer pre AMG-Daimler merge has no economic value (to me) I am glad its under Stephen's care, these cars don`t exist anymore, is not only the quality but the design so unique. I don't have a clue what the designer had in mind when build it, its probably the best car in that era. 123, 124 and 201 are the best cars Mercedes built. Anyone knows about the white hammer in the AMG sales brochure?
All hammers are pre merger, and all are worth a fortune. Depends which brochure your talking about, but there is a white RHD coupe in the UK.
When I was stationed in Germany I had a 190 hammer Benz back in the day. I miss my baby Benz.

I used to have AMG Hammer Wagon. Sold it few years ago. It had AMG VIN on top of crossed Mercedes original VIN.
Pretty sure that blue four door hammer lived in Miami in the early 90's, and was for sale in a dealer showroom in Miami around 92 or 93.
There was also a black coupe with the same chrome wheels as the red car featured here, which lived in Beverly Hills around that same time. I was always told it was a V8 hammer, but I really can't confirm if it was or not. I do have a number of old photos of the black coupe with the license plate clearly visible if anyone knows the car.

Just come across your video. I had a connection in the UK with a Hammer mid 80s. My dad was a chauffeur bodyguard in the UK for a supermarket ceo. He had on loan from the then official uk AMG dealer/importer called Stratton in Wilmslow Manchester, now known as the multi luxury brand dealer network Stratstone. The car if I remember rightly was the 6 litre 4 cam saloon in a very dark blue. It didn't have the wide body, just normal width body, but left hand drive. The reg plate number on that car then was either 1AMG or AMG1 I can't remember! I know my dad's got a photo somewhere. Also, at the same time, a director of the same company had a wide body AMG SEC in silver....which at the time was a mega unknown car! Just thought I'd add a comment, hope it's OK 👍
