    Saying partner suggests 2 people playing together. Not so...Each player plays their own hand. The Charleston is a way of getting rid of and acquiring tiles that can be used to build a hand that matches one of the hands in the card. R=right (pass 3 unwanted tiles to the right), next O or Opposite (pass 3 unwanted across the table), L =left.....and so on. ROLLOR =right, opposite, left, left, opposite and right. An optional pass is called curtesy pass and 1-3 tiles can be passed across from you. If you have only two tiles to curtesy pass then the person across from you can only pass two tiles to you. The Charleston shouldn't be rushed but also you might not be able to decide yet which hand you are going to try to build until you are well into taking turns picking up and discarding. As a beginner myself this year I can unequivocally say that Mahjonge is fun and challenging. You'll be confused A LOT and sometimes discard a tile you meant to keep or didn't "call" a discarded tile when you had a chance.

    It would have been helpful to show we beginners which tiles you discarded and why you made that choice. I am having a challenge with that decision.Perhaps using a made up hand so as to not infringe on copyrighted material?

    I've been playing for over a year. I have always wondered why the rule exists that you roll the dice in the beginning...is this to ensure that nobody cheats? what's the purpose for that rule?

    • @MAHJONGGCLASS
      @MAHJONGGCLASS  8 років тому +1

      Yes, it ensures that nobody cheats

    • @annemarymartorano2196
      @annemarymartorano2196 7 років тому +2

      Rolling the dice is to determine who will be East.

    • @MAHJONGGCLASS
      @MAHJONGGCLASS  7 років тому +3

      That is right Anne Mary, it's used to determine East. Also, once East is determined, Easy rolls again to break the wall to ensure that there is no cheating. It ensures that no one is setting up the tiles in the beginning to give them an edge. ie if East roles a 5, you begin count starting at the right of East wall, the double stack counts as one and head left tile you have 5 double stacks. Push out the remaining wall and begin distribution. The small grouping of 5 double stacks will remain in front of East until the end of the game. That wall will be the last wall used.

    • @annemarymartorano2196
      @annemarymartorano2196 7 років тому +1

      I'm glad you answered that question. A person I play with constantly wins and we don't roll for breaking the wall. Hmmm I was wondering how she always wins. Thanks for the heads up.

    It is 18 tiles, not 19.

    • @MAHJONGGCLASS
      @MAHJONGGCLASS  3 роки тому

      The wall in front of each player is 19 tiles across and 2 high total of 38. There are 4 walls/players and each have 38 tiles in front of them. Add all tiles is 152, that is the complete total of tiles that American Mah Jongg is played with.

    For a total beginner I must be honest your videos are not very clear as to what the objective of the game is as all you do is moving tiles from one person to the next. How do you decide which tiles to discard as you just keep grabbing random ones and moving them to your fellow players. That doesn’t make sense AT ALL. What’s the aim of the game? Or is it just passing 3 tiles until everyone is bored of it?

    • @MAHJONGGCLASS
      @MAHJONGGCLASS  3 роки тому +1

      The object of the game is to create one of the hands on the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card. The passing is used to better your hand/tiles to a category you picked on the NJML card and then you will pick a specific hand. After all the passing the game is played like cards, picking and discarding unwanted tiles that are not helping you (keeping only those tiles that are in your category). Mah Jongg is never a boring game. It's best to take lessons or find a friend who is willing to teach you, American Mah Jongg has lots of rituals and rules. Mah Jongg brings much to jot to many people and I hope you will find that too if you choose to learn the game. I would watch the videos in order and then go back and watch again if you are really interested in learning.

    • @anellaurens1737
      @anellaurens1737 3 роки тому

      @@MAHJONGGCLASS thank you - we will keep on watching. For a total beginner watching your videos (as I’ve already said) what is the NMJL card?!? Maybe as a hint to people who have no context of what a hand is supposed to look like, what you are explaining makes NO sense in the first 2 videos. My husband said maybe it’s copyrighted that’s why you are not sharing the info properly - but then surely you can create an example yourself on a piece of paper to illustrate the objective. I hope you see my comments as positive criticism as I think YOUR objective for making these videos is to help / teach people like us.
      We will continue with a few more of your videos. And I definitely want to take lessons in person - we found someone close by, in Manhattan, who teaches.

    @lucyt4378 4 роки тому

    Again you don't simply use a made-up "hand" or whatever it is we're not allowed to see, which seems kind of crucial and I can no longer follow your explanation from this point. Trying to decide if I want to get into a group. A game that requires spending money every year to learn the secret "hand" seems like a scam.
