Is the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club the BEST true sports car to BUY?

- The Miata has been a sales success for Mazda. The MX-5 RF Club takes things to the next level. On the outside you will notice a folding hardtop, BBS wheels, Brembo Brakes, and extra functional aero. On the inside you will be held in place by Recaro seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, and navigation. Under the hood is a 2.0L inline 4 that produces 181HP & is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Is the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club a TRUE sports car?

Always thought a true sports car was small, nimble, and not a over-sized amount of power. The pleasure comes with hitting the apex, being able to shift the gears to keep inside the power band, and to stop quickly. The MX-5 truly embodies the essence of a traditional sports car. Loved this ON THROTTLE! Great review, and awesome video experience,Lori
You nailed it with that comment Adam!
yes sir, theres a reason why lotus cars are fun to drive.
Aye
Some people might disagree with you but I definitely don’t
You'd have to consider a non-SUV non-4 door Porsche a "True Sports Cars".
This is Joe's fifth review of the ND Miata and I'm enjoying all of them
Thanks for taking the drive with me! ON THROTTLE is so much fun in this car.
I love how Miata still has the engine showing off . Not covered in dumb plastics
what’s wrong with covering it?
Plastic is unnecessary weight
seriously. it makes me so happy to see how far you've come since you first started. Consistent uploading, editing, going to dealerships to review cars, all that time and hard work. It pays off. And you are the perfect example of it. Keep it up and can't wait to see 1 million subs.
Thanks Jeremy for taking the time to say that! I seriously can not do it without everyone's fantastic support!
What a legendary car glad they chose to continue the miata's legacy
You are so very right about that Samuel!
Feminine Legendary
@@cnh7262 bro you probably drive a slow v6 challenger thinking you are above anyone because you drive a challenger, you probably squat to pee, its time for a diaper change shawty.
@@aimxdy8680 no lol, I’m not above anyone. I just have a Honda Accord. I’m just doing my part to save men from driving a convertible Miata. It’s a thankless job.
@@cnh7262 It must be very sad to be you on a daily basis.
You know, it’s just such a pleasure to see someone TRULY enjoying a car! It’s fun to see someone being really happy. The MX-5 is often the cure for the blues! 👍
That engine bay looks sooooo nice. It’s cool to see the overhead cam covers that kinda reminds you of those old Japanese sports cars, definitely a nice touch 👍
I wish I could work at that JCPenny so that everyday at lunch I could go out and watch Raiti's Rides LIVE.
Now that sounds like a great idea!
I’d grab a Yoo-hoo and some chips ahoy, grab a lawn chair, and enjoy the magic from afar 😂
It was supposed to be top secret and very undisclosed!
I've watched my share of UA-cam videos over the years and never felt the need to comment. However, I just have to say that I absolutely love your videos and car reviews. I'd consider myself a growing enthusiast. I LOVE cars, but there's a heck of lot I have to learn. Your videos are not only fantastically informative, but your reviews are fun an engaging to everyone. Your genuine love of cars and enthusiasm is awesome. I LOVE your excitement going ON THROTTLE in this one. I've got to give a Miata a test drive one of these days. I've never driven one, but I definitely want to see why so many people love them. Great videos Joe!
I just want to say that I own a brand new soft top one and it's the greatest car I've ever driven. Not a second goes by that I'm not happy in it. I've been getting 36-46 mpg (depending on how I drive) which blows my mind. Upkeep is easy and cheaper than a Corolla, plenty quick, handles like a dream, and even though it's small I am comfortable driving it. In fact, I'm going to go drive it right now.
That is so fantastic! Thanks for sharing your experience!
I take the long way home, especially if there’s curvies! Best wishes for you and car.
I've had mine for just over 2 years now and I agree with everything you said. The handling is amazing and it's truly a joy to drive.
But to be fair to anyone considering this car, it doesnt get anywhere near 46mpg lol, not even close. I average 26 mpg, which goes up to 32 on the highway with cruise control.
@@Foltz22 sounds like you’re doing super short trips and/or you’re driving it very hard, but I absolutely have gotten 46 US MPG in ideal conditions. My average is 36.
Mazda's official site says the car gets "Up to 26 mpg city and 35mpg highway". My experience is 26 city and 32 highway, so very close to the estimates on the site. You're somehow getting a magical 10mpg more which means you eithet have never shifted out of 2nd gear, or you're lying.
Again, I love the car and would gladly heap praise on it. But to bullshit people into believing it gets nearly 50mpg is nonsense.
I've been waiting for this year's MX-5 review and my Friday just got better! I've been wanting a MX-5 RF GT for a few years now and once they came out with the Deep Crystal Blue and white interior, my focus has been laser guided. Thanks for the review, Joe! Great work with the camera as always, Lori.
Great review as usual. The camera angle is awesome. When you go on throttle and take the turns we really feel your connection to the car and road. Point and shoot. Just great.
Joe, you've done so many of these MX-5's. I'm even a ND2 Miata owner. But I just love how you talk about the style cues in detail. No other reviewer does it!
your reviews are awesome and commentaries are hilarious!...just to see you get all giddy with excitement when you 'on throttle' is GOLD!...you sold me on the MX-5 RF...keep up the good work. Love your vids from all the way up here in Toronto!
Hey Joe, it just feels so fun to just watch that amazing and connected driving experience, I can't imagine myself at the wheel and 'On Throttle!'😀🏎️
I've been aching for a sports car like this since I sold my 1972 MGB back in 1975. Just bought a 2022 MX5 RF-GT in March and it brings back all the great driving sensations of my MGB, only this one doesn't break down every other day.
I know that feeling for sure!
Great review as usual. I've got a 2018 RF as a daily driver and its a great car. My commute has me driving 2 hours a day and it is a joy to drive. Responsive steering, and hands down the best gear box I've ever used. I spend most of my commute on freeways and I've never had an issue with having enough power to get around and pass - the Miata is a super lite car. As an added bonus it gets really good gas mileage - I do not baby the car and sometimes I'm stuck in bumper to bumper traffic and I still get around 32 mpg.
My life story. Couldn’t agree more
I’ve never seen you have so much fun in a car and that’s what sold it for me. Thanks for all you do.
I would be playing "Red Barchetta" by Rush while driving this car.
Ford Capri
Awesome review ! Your so thorough with every little detail. Best car reviewer on UA-cam by far, always look forward to your opinions and feedback.
Thanks for doing what you do, your absolutely the best at what you do.
You had so much fun with this one Joe, loved the review. You have me considering a mx-5 down the road now. I hope you can do a review on a supercharged or turbo charged mx-5 one day. Keep up the great work!
You are definitely an expert when it comes to cars Joe!!
Wow, that is super awesome of you to say!
@@RaitisRides l
Always with the best reviews. Your work excels with every video and you are doing an amazing job covering the automotive world. Always a fan, thank you for the hard work !
Awesome On throttle action Joe. This car for sure puts a smile on your face. My wife has a 2019 RF Club and hands down it’s one of the funnest cars I personally have driven. We share the same zonks, but the good still outweigh the bad. Thanks Joe and Lori for bringing it.
I own this car in the same great color since only two weeks now and it’s so much fun ! Happy I made this decision. Driving in this car really makes you smile all the time. Lots of love from Germany.
2020 Red RF, tan leather interior. My COVID-19 gift to myself. Great mileage, fun to drive. It’s definitely a head turner.
That is so awesome! Congrats!
Red with tan leather is a gorgeous combo. My only mini-regret when I settled for the black interior. At the time only the 2016 launch edition had that combo and it was so hard to find in my area
Got the manual?
They still do the tan interior? Strange, must be only in the US.
@@kencur9690
Yes. I have a RF manual with tan interior.
I have an RF, I keep a good set of concert earplugs in the center cubby for when I put the top up. Normally I just leave it up and roll down the windows, because the sun is hot and I'm pale. Also, it's an absolute giggle machine. If you're on the fence, just do it
One of your best be reviews, Jo. It's a car for people who love driving for sure. The thing that I noticed with mine was the rotation. It actually feels like the car pivots in the middle when you take corners. Quite remarkable!
You sure got that right, Joe: Miata Is Always The Answer!!! I love them so much!!! Test drove one and maaaaaaaan it was a hoot!!! Maximum respect for bringing us this absolute gem of an automotive experience!!! Edit: we didn't need the trunk area coverage anyway! Hahaha!!! #RaitisRides #OnThrottle #Mazda #MX5 #Miata
They are just so pure!
@@RaitisRides absolutely!
What a nice road your driving on. I love when theres a double yellow line instead of single yellow. Gives you little more confidence in the other drivers ability to stay in the lane on corners😂
I'll never forget when I visited a family member who had a Miata in the early 90's. I was a teenager at the time but I had a blast being driven around in it. I've wanted one ever since but the time has never been right. Seems even further away with two kids in daycare now but one day...
Love that car. Love the review. Huge fan of both the Miata RF and the channel.
I have never come across your channel before, but I really loved the way you explained every detail of the car. Moreover, the way you screamed a few times while driving was very authentic.
I think this is the most fun I’ve seen you have going on throttle since I’m a subscriber!
Thanks Laurie!
Ramon the Miata has that affect.Go drive one and see for yourself. But I'm warning you
It's contagious.
@@michaelfont7239 Oh, no doubt about it!
I actually traded in my Porsche Cayman today for a 2021 Miata club trim. Went from 88k in car debt to 31k. This Miata is incredible!
I like the way that you think.
Damn so the cayman is nowhere near the gt3 then. Cause I got a chance to test out the gt3 and that was like a video game. Anyway thanks for info might just go with the regular 911 or the c8.
@@dickyfam29 the cayman is a overrated sport car and too expensive.
Whenever I watched reviews of the Miata, people start off by quoting the hard numbers and everyone just goes "meh". But as soon as they're on the road with the camera rolling, its ear to ear grins all the time. That was enough to convince me to buy my first Miata RF a few weeks ago. I had the same reaction, just grinning like an idiot when I'm tearing up the backroads. Awesome video!
So nice to see Raiti having so much fun
I will never get tired of miata videos from you
ON THROTTLE, HERE WE GO! My fav part of all your videos.!
Another great review Joe, you don’t miss. I was wondering, what is the BEST car you’ve ever reviewed?
That is so hard to say Zach! I know I can't stop thinking the 2017 Viper I reviewed!
@@RaitisRides oh yeah!!!
@@RaitisRides Fun fact: Dodge sold 2 new Vipers in Q3 of 2020.
Great car and the front end looks like it’s saying “hello”.
Joe, love your channel! You make otherwise boring reviews interesting. This is my next purchase once Mazda restocks for 2023. Going for an RF Club in Polymetal Grey and a 6 speed manual.
I don’t care how many reviews you make of the car I’m gonna watch each and everyone of them, I love this car
wonderfully articulated. nice video. thank you.
Other car reviewers are mostly just journalists. Joe is a real driver and enthusiast. Really enjoyed this review like I was sitting in the passenger seat.
Love that exhaust just right not too loud but sporty enough
So very true! Helps you stay under the radar!
I'd put a Cherry Bomb on it.
A Miata was the car I used to learn stick. Love these things. Love your reaction on throttle.
Great review Joe👍🏼 Nice little sports car
I can see you got an extra point of love about Mazdas and that’s great!
Don’t Ever Stop Doing Car Reviews You Make My Day

Spot on review from a big Mazda Miata fan. "Communication gets an A+" is 100% CORRECT!!!
Another great review, thanks Joe! Now I need to figure out how to get one of these in my garage….
Hey Joe and Lori wanted to let you know after watching lots of your video for a good suv I went with Mazda CX-5 touring package 🙂 you guys are amazing. Got it 2 weeks ago and my sales lady did her best to get shipped from another state since we didn’t have it here in Syracuse NY
That’s awesome! Congrats!
Always enjoy your reviews ... Great job!. I am in the market for sure, but the order banks for the Club trim have closed for the 2022. With the understanding that this is a true drivers car and from someone who has driven and owned some beasts, do you ever yearn for more power when driving this? Like in the back of your mind...an inline 6 would be perfect? Thanks in advance and keep up the awesome reviews!
Honest to God story here... I was on another video (how Star Wars blaster sound was made) and one suggestion was to speed the video up to 1.25x normal. So I did. Then I got bored immediately and clicked on the nearest Raiti's Ride video.
I think I got about 10 minutes in before I remembered that I had sped up the video, but before that I didn't notice... it just seemed...right.
Kudos to your level of energy sir. Your videos rule. :)
I do think the MX-5 is the best overall sportscar. It's the total purist package... light weight, perfectly balanced, manual trans, naturally aspirated with high redline, rear drive. There's no other car that I can think of that embodies all of those attributes and when you put it all together, the experience is unmatched. Like you said, the best part is that you can use almost all of the MX-5's capability on public roads which means it has just the right amount of power for the typical driving enthusiast who doesn't go to the track every weekend, but does take the long way home from work.
Nice review as always! Always nice to drive the fun ones! The BBS wheels are part of an optional package on the Club trim, not stock unfortunately, but that's definitely the way I'd spec it!
I just went to configure a 2022 and the package is now standard on the club trims !
@@ordinarygamer1353 oh, interesting! Yeah, it looks like they made it standard on the RF Club for 2022! That's a nice update! It looks like it's still an option on the rag top though.
awesome! happy to watch you happy driving :D
Driving Mx5 and Porche in a matter of days you're simply having too much fun! On throttle, smiles, chirps 👍 I'm on my second mx5. Mk1 back in 90s and Mk3 2lt for last 8 years. She's called Marylin. The garage where I get her serviced knows her name as do my friends. Couldn't wish for a better companion to share the road, the sunshine, and to fill life with smiles. No other car comes close. Keep up the fab reviews! David, Manchester UK

Nothing I love more than watching a review of my car
JOE ~ I think there are after market tailpipe add-ons to finish the tips out w/ black chrome or silver chrome treatments. I think the MX-5 is a true classic sports car, yet built for today. RWD, manual, 50/50 weight ratio, low center of gravity, good apex, not over done with pointless frills, true euro type standard sports positives - the RF actually reminds me more of a roadster & the soft top is a conventional convertible. pure fun - awesome seeing you enjoy the feel & thrills of driving it. - tony
What makes the MX5 so popular, is that it recreates the old British Classic sports car, for those of us on a fairly tight budget.
It's very reliable, is cheap to run, drives so well, that few alternatives can match it.
Just a brilliant all rounder, and ive owned one since Sep 2021.
@Raiti’s Rides Thought I recognized that stretch of road…right in my backyard. I take that stretch of road all the time. Not a lot of great curvy roads in the area and love taking my motorcycle and Mazda3 Turbo down that same road. Great review.
Great review
Wow!!!!! That's One Clean & Beautiful Sports Car Ever Made From Mazda & It's My Dream Car For Sure, Nice Review Joe.
Thanks Jeremiah! I am so glad that you liked this one.
I ordered a 2022 rf club in March’22, and it came 7/21/2022. The only option was the Polymetal Gray Metallic. Only accessory was the interior foot lighting. You had mentioned the smile…yeah, driving it home, I looked in the mirror to see my grin😊.
The paint is way cool, and worth the $395…sometimes parts of it looks bluish. At moderate speeds, with the roof retracted and windows down, I could carry on a conversation with my passenger easily. I haven’t checked them out, but I had read somewhere there are semi-hidden small compartments in the seat backs. Trunk is of course small as expected, but I can fit my humongous gym bag in there with a little extra room. Thanx for putting up your video. I feel enthusiastic as you do.
Loving what Mazda is doing ! Their styling is very nice 👍🏻
@Raiti's Rides Thanks Lori.. your awesome... Now Joe, if you had some extra space for a car in your garage ,,,and you had to choose. Would it be the Gr86 or the Miata of your trim choice?
Definitely an amazing sports car. I love my ND2 RF. Supercars and hypercars are amazing, but the fun is short lived. I would have to come to a stop and floor it, rinse and repeat over and over because that's all they're good for. A lightweight, well balanced and responsive car is great fun again and again on back roads without having to come to a complete stop and flooring it every time to have fun. You can have fun maybe 5% of the time you drive a supercar but you will have fun 90% of the time you drive an MX5 Miata.
Always loved this car, true driving, and yes definitely a sports car.
Update 2021 Aug: I'm still in love with my Mazda (we don't call it Miata in Australia) MX-5 RF Auto 2 Litre Eternal Blue. Would not swap it for any Car. :)
Cracking little car!! So underrated
Hey Joel
Debating betwhen the new GR86 or the MX5 ND ? What one would you pick and why ?
At 16:53min, not even greeting the Miata friend! :(
Absolutely amazing car! Thanks for the presentation of this legend!
Yup, that’s a no-no.
I wasn’t even initiated into the club: it just happened naturally. It’s like an instinct once you buy the car. People started greeting, and I greeted back.
The best car channel around
Probably the funniest car review video Ive every watch!
Looks like most fun you’ve had with a car. Awesome
How does the driving experience compare with a 6-cylinder Cayman manual? I realize they are at very different price tiers, but they do seem very similar - small, lightweight, manual transmission, fun-to-drive cars. Great review, thanks!
Great review. I just got a used 2012 miata nc. I love it. It has only 47k true red, no longer available in the ND versions. It is now the third card in my garage. I had 28 cars in the past 15 years. This one is the best with the Stinger GT2
Congrats! They are great cars!
We have similar experiences. I daily drove an NC1 and NC2 since 2006, and really, really liked them. NC2s seem very under appreciated currently, but probably not for long. They’re a great bargain at the moment IMO.
I liked my somewhat modified NC2 more than the ND1 in any configuration, so I skipped that version. I currently have a 2020 RF GT, and after about 6,000 miles, I’m starting to appreciate it, but I don’t think the transition from a tuned NC2 is as easy or obvious as a lot of online reviews and comments would suggest.
Have a great time! Mine seemed fairly indestructible tracking and dailying. Other than routine maintenance, replacing bent wheels, and replacing ignition wires at about 150,000 miles, no repairs. It’s currently being converted to a full time track car.
My other car currently is a Stinger GT2, also. NC2, ND2, GT2 are hands down our favorite cars of MANY. Including some much more expensive and “higher performance “ varieties.
I usually give my cars away after we use them. The only car I really regret not keeping was our NA that we purchased in 1990. One reason I plan on keeping our NC2. That’s also one I’m pretty sure I would regret letting go of.
The car is so low and so light that I'd imagine you will feel like your going faster than you really are.
So very true but it also allows you to have a great connection with all 4 corners!
Can confirm. Can row through multiple gears full-on white knuckle, look at the speedometer and I’m still under the posted rural backroad speed limit.
Indeed. I picked up a 21' RF coming off a BMW 340 M Package. Going 60 in my Miata feels like going 100 in the BMW.
Such a fun car.
Feels like you're flying even doing the speed limit. Amazing feeling.
Yep you do, especially with an aftermarket exhaust
I've loved the Miata since it came out & the rf is for me.
The tyre screeching sounds awesome... 9:08 Needed some drifting...
Good call Alex! I will do that for the next one!
When you buy one all you need to add is a stubby antenna and an aftermarket exhaust. By the way, you wont really notice the wind buffeting in the RF as you’ll be having to much fun to notice.
Wow I want one! As a 2019 Mazda 6 GT owner, this would be a beautiful addition 😃
I love the way this car looks. Would I choose it over the GR86? No, but the thing that people love is the drop top, and I'm not a fan of convertibles or even sunroofs. So that doesn't sway me.
I would love to see a back to back drive with a Miata and a GT3.
This and the rx-7 was my favorite car to drive in need for speed !fast, smooth and handles well 😊!Ive never driven one in real life bt im sure it’s fun to drive I’m probably too tall at 6’3!
Love it!!🤙🏾
What a great sports car! Really enjoyable to drive!
I am so glad that you could go on throttle with me!
Hey Joe, what's the handling like compared to a 86/BRZ?
I owned a Porsche 914 (Targa), 4 cylinder, 2000 lbs and 95hp...mid engine...what a great driving experience...you don't need a lot of horsepower to enjoy a sports car...this mx5 has a better power to weight ratio although it's not mid engine.
A smile in the face, that's everything...
Here in Spain there in a new version of the MX-5 out in 2022...it's called the 'Blue Cap Edition' which refers to the blue soft top it comes with. Available in body paint colors of black, red or a brand new super bright white color called "Platinum Quartz". So then there will be 3 white finishes to choose from- the new Platinum Quartz, Snowflake White Pearl and Arctic White in addition to the other colors. Not sure if the 'Platinum Quartz' finish carries over to the Black and Red version too. This new white really, really pops...I saw it next to the existing Snowflake White Pearl and Arctic White and it appeared much, much whiter and brighter. The actual soft top color is a lighter shade of blue compared to the previous one I believe.
Love the feedback to the steering wheel? What feedback?
This has been the definition of a true sports car for years, a modern day throwback. Light, nimble, NA engine that revs high and handles like a dream. It's certainly not a muscle car so don't compare it to one. It's also beautiful, that exterior is timeless. The interior unfortunately is getting all of Mazda's leftovers and doesn't reflect on their newer designs. Wait a year and this thing will once again be perfect!
