He ended up putting a 'pretty much stock' 302 in it not long after.....it was still PLENTY of motor for that car. I cannot imagine one of these at this weight with a 427 in it......wow.

Awesome build with a unconventional engine choice especially a Pre-PI head.
I've thought about using my 14 mustang as a donor vehicle for one of these. (It's got a rebuilt title and far from cosmetically perfect but is mechanically sound)
Cool car but a 4.6 pooch mod motor would be way down on my list of engine choices. They sound like a Cobra should (vs the DOHC Coyote) but just don’t look right under the hood and are just too gutless. My first choice would have been a 363 Ford stroker. You can get a crate engine with a warranty up to 500 HP. They make plenty of power without being too much like the 427 versions (I have driven one), sound great, fit easily with room to work on and are way more nostalgia correct appearing. Just my opinion clearly.
In Indiana a 99 model qualifies for antique plates. soooo, not really modern but I understand what you meant, though I would probably rather do a 351 in it.
Cool car with a complete turd for a motor. With a vacuum leak at idle”tuning around it” is basically hacking the tune but it’s all you can do until it’s fixed. Best advise you could have given him is to fix the vacuum leak and bring it back afterwards. I feel like 90 % of customer built cars will have some kind of issue that needs to be fixed before it can be tuned. This is why I don’t tune people’s cars for them. I end up being the crew chief for free lol
@@jsf74 i did fix the vaccum leak temporarily enough to tune 700-1200 rpm perfect. Then it started leaking again and couldn’t fix it within the time we had. Under part throttle and especially WOT the tune is not affected by a vaccum leak. Sorry i should have clarified that.
@@Motorsportkyleobviously you know what you are doing especially since you work right besides your father and he trusts the work you do. If it was actually leaking while you were tuning it we all know it would not tune correctly! Good job bud keep doing what you are doing!
That's actually making bit more than stock, the early 4.6 is rated at 215 net, striped down on an engine Dyno they make around 260hp +/- and typically that engine would make 175ish whp so the bolt ons did a little bit. Power wise their on par with a stock 5.0HO. Even tho the HP is tame it's still a V8 with good TQ and in a light car that TQ is gonna be very noticable, I'm sure he wants a cruiser not a race car so that engine is perfect. If he wants a 40 to 50 HP boost all he has to do is bolt on a newer set of 1999+ PE heads those were rated at 260hp net that's a significant gain over the 96-98 4.6.
Not the very last engine I would put in it if it were mine but very close. An old school 302 with fuel injection would be a big up grade and take up less room in the engine bay. To each his own.

10:54 that’s bullshit that vacuum leak will affect the tune. You cannot effectively tune that car with that vacuum leak. not to mention the damage you could do internally. If it decides to suck that piece of gasket down into the intake could hang a valve, and even if it didn’t suck the gasket all the way down in, you would have to add fuel to accommodate for the extra air in the moment that air gets plugged, it’s gonna start running rich and it will load up and start black smoking, which could lead to washing out.
