This is a performance cover to accompany my guitar lesson on this song which can be found here: • John Mayer - City Love...
This is the live version of City Love from the "Any Given Thursday" live performance. I liked Mayer's solo better in this one. The backing track is from this video • City Love - John Mayer... which I have modified to have extra bars in the live solo section.
The guitar I used is a custom Warmoth quilted maple body and bird's eye maple neck that I constructed in 2001. It has Seymour Duncan Nashville 5-2 pickups with on/off toggle switches (both are on for this performance) the neck is an SRV model compound radius neck and it recently had a brass nut installed by fellow UA-camr Woodeso, a video of which you can see here: • Installing A Brass Gui... .
It positively sings now.. Thanks Woodeso!
I am running a Line6 POD HD Pro X and the effects are a Blue Comp into a stereo delay (maybe a bit too much delay in the mix) into a dimension chorus using only SW1 and 2-4 turned off and a 100ms room reverb. Amp model is the Roland JC-120 (an Amp I own in real life, they are wonderful. The Amp Model is called Jazz Rivet) into a virtual 67 Condenser mic.
oh damn I didn't realize until now that the chords he uses in the bridge are the intro chords to covered in rain, I knew covered in rain was a part 2 to city love but damn, these two songs have to be the most well written, well thought out John Mayer songs.
People laugh when I say he's the modern Hendrix, everything he does has meaning and isn't just done to "pay the bills"!
You did such a great job on this! Can't stop watching, got it stuck in my head.
Zartimus, Acoustic version of BACK TO YOU please :-)
I love this song!!! Thanks so much, I can't wait for the tutorial!! You have the best detailed instruction I've ever seen.
I've waited years for this video man, thank you for doing what you do :)
Amazing man, you are the best , thank you thank you, your guitar lessons are perfect
Stellar job on the solo man! That's hard stuff. How Mayer pulls these off on the fly I can't fucking fathom
Been following and learning a ton from your videos. love the cover of this classic bluesy pop tune! You sing jm well with similar vocal techniques but with your own voice. I tried to sound exactly like mayer but have learned to focus more on developing my own voice.
I tried to do the same at first, but for his voice, you sometimes have to sing like you're trying to fog up a mirror. We're not born with his unique vocal chords. I find his falsetto hard to replicate because his voice is pitched lower than mine so I started to do his falsetto in full and that works out for me(Mayer's falsetto seems effortless for him).. Definitely try doing your own thing, you won't go wrong doing that.
Dude, that was amazing
damn you killed that solo
Dude, you are the über mayer fan. Keep up the damn good work
Amazing!
Thanks man. Keep doing this
Awesome!
awesome cover.. love the background :)
awesome!
Yes.
Thanks man
Very nice !!! Juuuuhuuu Zartimus!!!:D
More Mayer!
Are you going to put out some new tutorials soon. I think there's still a lot of great performances from wtl is, that would be great to have. For example slow dancing in a burning room or good love is on the way. Also I think you should check out the performance of edge of desire live at the Hollywood bowl. That's one I'd really like to learn, but there just isn't any good tutorials on it, anyway thank you for all your great work on all the other tutorials!
Working on Lifelines.
No one has yet to replicate the perfect tone to this version yet. You came close, but there's just something off about it. Then again, I wouldn't expect any of us to have over $10,000 worth of pedals and effects
Check out the first few minutes of the tutorial. It sounded nice in the room. I think it's the brass nut and prevalence of open strings;-) and the DELAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ain't No Sunshine, any of John's versions :)
Great performance! What tutorial is coming next Zartimus? Is it Lifelines?
Probably heart of Life or "I don't Trust Myself with loving you" WTI version. OR Neon "On his own", I listened to that one again recently. Lifelines is on the to do list.
Zartimus As always, thanks for answering! Any of those songs would be perfect. With Neon "On his own" version, you could just tab and teach the intro and chorus, due to your past Neon tutorial. Keeping the Mayer Army up until next album comes!
You are a god
Are the chords you use here the exact same chords that John uses in the demo version of the song? Awesome cover by the way
I'm not familiar with the demo. The chords are what he plays live in the "Any Given Thursday" performance. I look at them in waveforms and I eyeball the fret positions. It will disagree with many TABS out there because I think they are wrong ;-)
check it out when you get a chance! the demo is his acoustic version of the song. and yeah i agree thats why I always come to your channel first
Zartimus You gotta be kidding me... what do you exactly mean by “I look at them in waveforms”?
Amazing job. This dude is underrated tbh jus sayin
Thumbs up
I swear those chords in the chorus where a pain in the ass to figure out.
I can't find a backing track video
maybe it's too late but... the backing track is on my channel... actually is the one Zartimus is using :3... I'm glad my work is spreading :P
What effects are you using?
I'll add that in the description.
I dig it
Where can i get the backing track?

I thought you say, play a (guitar) tab, split a cab.
Wow new guitar?
OLD guitar. I built that in 2001 from parts from Warmoth.com. Just had a brass nut put on it so it became the shiney new toy again. If you watch teh last 5 minutes of the Tutorial I show it under construction way back when.. It's pretty neat guitar..
nailed the solo!
Great job man!!
Anyone thats heard still feel like your man knows if hes got room for his old girls shampoo then hes got plenty of room for a tooth brush.
For sure!
Zartimus Idea for a psycho thriller short. john mayer No longer your shampoo. First it was your toothbrush then it was your shampoo in my shower. Now its my shampoo in your shower! Never will you forget the smell of my shampoo! lol wow that would be scary
This great, technique is great¡ but the guitar should sound a little louder than the voice, and less agressive. John Mayer follow SRV techniques where he pkays the guitar a lot and doesnt sing thar much. Sorry for my english.
Please do not sing!
I will sing more! Just for you!
@@Zartimus thank you.now I am happy
This isnt good.
Aiden Pettine I’m an acquired taste.
