BATMAN RETURNS (1992) Revisited- DC Movie Review

  • Tim Burton’s Batman successfully reinvented the superhero film and wound up being one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. Warner Bros was desperate for a sequel, but this time Burton wouldn’t have to work under the close supervision of producers Jon Peters and Peter Guber, who’d since left the studio. Virtually given carte blanche, the result would be a much darker, holiday set tale that would feature the Caped Crusader (played by a returning Michael Keaton) going up against Danny DeVito’s hideous The Penguin. At the same time, the movie would be dominated by Michelle Pfeiffer’s tragic anti-heroine, Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. The violent, dark film outraged parents in 1992 and led WB to virtually reboot the franchise with Joel Schumacher at the helm. Still, thirty years later, Batman Returns is considered a masterpiece. Join us on this episode of DC Revisited as we dig into this classic.

Another amazing experience... I treated my friends at Merrill Lynch to the premiere. Two of the girls in Penguin's gang were friends I did videos with, one of whom showed them to Danny DeVito while he was putting on make-up. A stuntman/martial artist I know taught Ms. Pfeiffer the bullwhip (he was blown away) and another partner worked on the set shooting footage for a Batman ride. We put together a behind the scenes video that Warner Bros confiscated from us. Good times.

The only similarities are Penguin and Catwoman being villains, Christmas setting, the plot point of Batman being framed for murder, and the moment Batman's cape turns into a glider. Everything else was different with the plot being Penguin and Catwoman looking for treasure, Batman is the focus instead of Penguin, Vicki Vale returns, Robin appears, Commissioner Gordon has a larger role, Harvey Bullock appears but is called Eddie, the final battle is in both Wayne Manor and the Batcave, and Bruce proposes to Vicki at the end

Thanks for the video I didn't think it was too bad I even had some of those happy meal( thanks for making me feel old). Though being older the one thing that I think hurts this movie is the with the penguin one moment he's a victim of circumstance the next he's a bad guy with a nefarious plan.

Parents in 1992: “ThAts tOO dARk!!”
Judge Frollo tries to drown Baby Quasimodo and murders entire village

I got to see one of the Catwoman suits at the Mall of the Americas in New Orleans when I was in highschool. The one I saw was just a rubber suit for the action scenes. The ones with all the stiches and details were for the closeups the card beside it said but Michelle Pfeiffer had actually been in it. I was really surprised how tiny she was in real life. 🦇

This is by far my Favorite Batman movie. I loved this movie so much as a kid (I was 9 when it came out) that I bought the novelization of it! (The exact one you showed on screen. Kind of wish I'd kept it.) Pfeiffer is my number 2 all time favorite Catwoman, only being inched out slightly by my love for Eartha Kitt. 😍

I think the Dark Knight is undeniably the best Batman film, but Batman Returns is definitely my favourite. It's a dark, gothic, tragic masterpiece. Beautiful visuals, beautiful characters, and an absolutely PHENOMENAL score by Danny Elfman. I will defend this movie till the day I die

Batman Returns is the BEST Batman movie ever! I remember listening to the Top 40 countdown, and they were saying how Madonna and Cher were wanting the role of Catwoman. Michelle Pfeiffer did a great job as Catwoman. She and Julie Newmar are my favorite live action Catwoman. Thank you for doing this video.

The Burton movies are great! The Nolan movies are great! After having seen it a few time in the theaters now, I have to say that Matt Reeve's movie is also great! They are all vastly different, but they all have something to offer hardcore fans of the character.

When I first saw it I thought it was just ok my main complaint was not enough Batman, now as an adult I can appreciate it more as it clearly has Tim Burton's weird influence more than the first one, I laughed at the bit of Burton being afraid of Christopher Walken this was when Walken was entering that oddball phase. Danny Elfman's music is again fantastic with the music of the penguins slowly dunking Penguin into the water being a favorite.

I'll never get the issue people have with Alfred bringing Vicki Vale into the Batcave to see Bruce. Alfred already liked her and wanted more for Bruce than his commitment to being Batman for the rest of his days. Enough clues were already there for Vicki to suspect something was off about Bruce before the Joker and crew showed up at her apartment. Finally, Bruce was smart enough to prepare for getting shot by the Joker in Vicki's apartment and then he antagonized the Joker into doing it, then Bruce just disappears before she comes back. Vicki has all the clues/info as well as the tray with the stopped bullet to show Alfred. If Vicki just shows up at Wayne Manor and says "I know Bruce is Batman, let me see him" I see no reason why Alfred wouldn't.

Fantasy films of this caliber envelop me in the rich and stunning production design, sets, costumes, score ... when I should be following the story and dialogue. I'm not a comic book person (much more a fan of humor strips like Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side), but Burton's cinematic visions were so wondrous strange that they enthralled me no end. Still do. Dark and twisted as this movie is, I am very fond of it. It's right up my alley-- somewhere near Wacky Street and Macabre Avenue, lol.
One time I heard that Michelle Pfeiffer is actually not the figure we are shown who is looking up at the night sky in the movie's climax, with her back to us; a body double was supposedly used.
I liked the campy television show (with its silly yet often stalwart tone, inside jokes, odd cameo appearances, corny-as-heck setting and character names, and its vivid colors) ... because as a kid it was a staple rerun on weekday afternoons; when homework was done, it was time for something like Batman, The Brady Bunch, Lost in Space, or I Dream of Jeannie (this was even before cable TV came on the scene).
Man, Tim Burton's stuff from the 80s and 90s is so fun and good. He really made a strong mark on pop culture and entertainment. I might not like all of it but I'm over for the moon for things like Beetlejuice, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Batman films, and Ed Wood.
Thanks for making this video. It's the cat's meow. 🐾

Mentioning Paul Reubens without mentioning Diane Salinger is a major oversight, because it was a re-teaming of the pair - Salinger played Simone opposite Reubens in “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure”.
