  • In this dialogue, CCARE’s founder and director, Dr. James Doty, will ask Werner Erhard about his life’s work and how compassion has played a role.
Werner Erhard is an original thinker whose ideas have transformed the effectiveness and quality of life for millions of people and thousands of organizations around the world. For nearly 50 years he has been the creator of innovative ideas and models of individual, organizational, and social transformation. His work has been the source of new perspectives for thinkers and practitioners in fields as diverse as business, education, philosophy, medicine, psychotherapy, developing countries, leadership, conflict resolution, and community building. Erhard has created new ways of seeing things in areas where progress has stalled or where breakthroughs would make a significant difference. A majority of the Fortune 100 companies and many foundations and governmental entities have used his ideas and models. Fortune magazine’s 40th anniversary issue (5/15/95), in examining the major contributions to management thinking, recognized Erhard’s ideas as one of the major innovations of the last few decades. In recognition of his humanitarian work in the U.S. and around the world, in 1988 Erhard was awarded the Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Award.

I did EST in the 70's and did seminars, the 6 day Training and the Communication workshop. EST has made a positive difference in my life and I am thankful for that. Nice to see him and hear him after all these years. I love and appreciate Werner Erhardt deeply and widely!!

One of the best things I’ve ever done for myself and the people in my life is the Landmark forum. I worked on Werner's personal staff in the early 80's. I love the man and am awestruck by the sheer numbers of people worldwide who have derived enormous benefit from his work. To this day, the most remarkable human beings I have known were those I worked with on his staff so many years ago. At the same time, I was struck on many levels by the contrast between Werner and Dr. Doty in this video. Dr. Doty talked about compassion and he was the very embodiment of compassion. He said we are hard-wired to care. I really don't think Werner is like that. He is all about productivity and impact. In all the time I worked with and around Werner, I never once felt that he cared for me (or anybody else for that matter). Perhaps that is more of a reflection on me than him. My purpose here is not to be critical or pass judgment but rather to share my own experience and observation. Just watch the video and observe the difference between Dr. Doty and WE..

Interesting sharing. I also worked on staff for WEAssociates in London in the late 80's and though I didn't work directly with Werner my experience of him is that he totally cares/cared for me. It is not about a feeling, as a woman would care for her child for example but for me it is about how committed he is to me being/fulfiling my potential. This got so real, so clear to me that I am always touched by how profoundly he loves me and all of us. Definitely 'ruthless compassion'. A great talk of his is the one on love and relationships, the distinction he draws there is essential and if you haven't heard it you might benefit from it ) Hope you got it complete for yourself in the meanwhile. Infinite peace.

It is nothing short of a miracle what has happened in our family since - I have beautiful self expressed relationships with everyone in my life just from sitting my bum down for those three days - I wanted to leave right up until the last and then I saw how much I made people wrong and had to be right about everything. I discovered my stubbornness and saw how unattractive it was to everyone in my life. It is genius how they have you discover for yourself. I learnt to trust again. X

Est was groundbreaking in the ‘70s when I first took it, and I continued with many other est programs, volunteering, Landmark, the Hunger Project, etc., for years after that. Even years later, it has continued to be foundational for me in all I do and people I know. Werner is still transformational in his work today, and I’m so thankful that he showed up in my lifetime. Living in truth is simple and quiet, and so is love. What comes from this inner silence is the openness to be present with, listen to, and be compassionate to others.

For me... it’s always been ...
Outside of words that penetrates my awareness from Werner. This only happens out of ones-complete responsible living. Only from integrity comes the goodies forward for others. And never not . Bit what do I know. Ha. For me. This man is a treasure as the upright of inclusive consciousness. I have never been so elevated in my life out if any of my seeking. Above what I took away from the Est training the education for living seminars the guest seminar leaders program the 7 day all the coffees I sponsored and all the beings family included I was fortunate enough to be with in such a way that they also have been changed forever.
We used to be .... I used to be different now I’m the same . All the way back from 79 . What fortune I stumbled upon. What chance of grander is there? You tell me that! Just tell me that!
    What is bigger !
Nothing is bigger. Not one dam thing. Lets be clear about that.
There is nothing bigger than to give ones self back to ones self for no reward but that! What other reward is there that actually matters ? Non . All that garbage about quagmires according to the fashion of the times ....... that’s all distraction and chains. How stupid in propensity can beings be. Actually shows up in
your face. If not your just spinning your wheels of victim
to it all. And words ... like here... they are not it.
But on top of it.....😊🌸 Anything off about anything about anyone is for them to face can’t not. Life escapes no one. So I don’t vote about it.
Only my going’s on’s belong to me. Be---Long that’s how long. And that’s where and how it be’s . No?
    That’s one’s work.
A good man is s bad mans teacher and a bad man is a good mans job. It’s not about following..... some pure thing.
At my worst ... no one wants
to even admit they know me.
At my best they want to be me.
Is it any different for you?
    Well thank u for reading.
Ha. Under neath I hope to augment with my comment. Snd it feels warm doing it. Why else would I come back.

The compassion in America today is crippled by the greed which takes place in the banks who evict people from their homes who skip payments due to this pandemic. Families are put in danger living in tent cities across America. The compassion for people in need of medical supplies and hospitalization has taken a back seat to allow those in the 2% of the wealthy Americans to be isolated from the affects. Est was the greatest experience of my life in 1980 Houston TX and I refreshed that training with Landmark in Atlanta 2018. I recommend anyone to do it for a wakeup call to find ways to implement compassion in the culture of humanity.

I don't teach in front of the room anymore. I went into it, partly, to satisfy my need to be a star. But that's not what I'm in it for anymore. There's need. A lot of it. you are spot on...
I was here before at this video post thingy . Buy accident then and now once again.
Not accident as a mistake. The other accidental arriving here.
The fundamental place we all come from in attitude. Ha. Is not a place un in erupted Or un-interfered with by our whole sociable frame work. It’s like we notice everything but see nothing. We are looking through the worlds glasses from a shallow filter that is common through the centuries. We think we add to our species’ intelligence. But never abandon our arrogance. People of admiration and high profile can only keep our attention by our attractiveness to their pointed success of excessive gatherings. So the goal becomes how to have a special tool to not be about the success in the excessive ownership of envied gatherings. But live out the lie and say that we are truly not about that.
Ha. Ha. It’s us that will never be content with our Lot....
Never enough of this worldly attitude around to show its worldly richness. We think there’s no richness in life at all unless there’s the worldly unanimous agreement of agreed upon-riches of life . A-greed is what it is!!!
It flys in the face of what natural human power to create really is. It’s like saying... if I can get more of the things out of profit of my brainstorming put to manufacturing . Seemingly out of thin air as I go along with my steadfast plan. I can make my children’s life better.... even if My manufacturing’s processes make their air thin then thinner and thinner.
It’s like we are intelligent enough to really see it. But if it doesn’t earn cents it doesn’t make sense. This is how we proceed with everything.
So I’m not following some celebrity of shinny gatherings and smooth deep convincing on how I too can obtain this magic.. as I dream about them and their lessons of
wealth and create my vision boards and mantras and robes of clothings and mountain side isolations and chassid practices galore just to escape this trap.
It’s a trap all of it.
But you wont want to get the all of that !
You want to get all that first and still get it all. But the all is the nothing at all. And you refuse to allow that truth to run through your living. And you let yourselves be conned again and again into thinking that is the way. Because like a brilliant primate of extraordinary abilities and intellect. The primate will never get it . The it that you can get but can’t stand up against the celebrity(s) of it all. Like the hypnotist .... follow my gold watch .. look closely now your getting sleepy and sleepy now close your eyes. And when I snap my fingers. You will awake. To being fully asleep.
You don’t like this do you ?
Ha. Screw this guy Let me move over to such and such a person. They have it all look see there. Let me listen to that one. And then the next fork in the road of happy/ness then what about that elixir. Let me add that in too. Theres so many goodies over there. Forget about the other side ... the absolute side. I’m not a stupid primate .....!
    REALLY PEOPLE...
Just live already .. this is it. All of it. Geese there is no place like home with in yourselves .
Now go take a cigarette brake before you sleep or brain-fries.
Ha ha you can’t get enough of what you don’t need.. now if I talk some more you’ll go off and even forget about the meat of this . You know the meat that blinked in as the it you are searching for than disappeared. Like the limited extent of the primate’s full intelligence !! That can clap and applause exactly like you only with out a cloak of clothing and all the finishing’s of admiration.. of which would all disappear along with the clothing if you stripped it all away From the vision board leaders of your dreams ... ( I really mean nightmares ) See primates were no clothing.
At least they see what is really there. Ha and even under the clothing (s) they see just fine.
Maybe they should have what we have and us what they posses. We saw planet of the apes but we didn’t get the
truth well even there we cloaked it for profit .. now go back to sleep sleep sleep. And when you wake start all over again.. with your alarm clock. Ha. Primates have no use for an alarm clock. They have absolute and perfect timing!!!!

It was in mid-70s I've was a student of EST. First in Hawaii, where I'm from, then into the early eighties in Cali while attending a university. Eventually I realized (dawned on me) how self-centered I became of a person. I was the center of my universe where it was about me and my goals and anyone or anything that would hinder me would immediately be omitted out of my life. These set backs would've been lessons to learn but not in my universe which resulted in much pain in the journey of Self. Viewing this video after thirty five years of being delivered from EST suddenly hear the compassion. That surprised me cause it was never taught of while being in EST - compassion was not, at the time, part of the equation in these teachings. Fast forward, then: While back on the islands while at a hotel I was eventually introduced to Jesus Christ which was the opposite polarity of selfishness but more giving and loving. From there things started changing substantially as life began being fulfilling and goals were achieved regardless of the curves that life has for us. I began seeing life, with all it's challenges in perspective to the Word of God and in the gentleness of the Holy Spirit that gave me the power that was appropriate in any given life situation. Being that much, if not all of Erhard's teachings derives from various philosophies and teachings of the world I later realized that out of all the world leaders in human history, Christ was the only way, the truth and life in the midst of the great deceptions we had then and continues this day is nothing new under the sun. My second year as a Christian while in college I had to burn all the occult literature in my collection of books, that I believe, EST's teachings led me to study and gathered it in a pile and burn them. I was free not just from my selfish self but from what I gathered was a dark force that once appeared to be light but not. Thank God and I pray for all those who are taken by such illusory that's been around for centuries just dressed differently. "Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ." - Colossians 2:8. And "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" -John 14:6

The problem is that intelligence and the subtlety of communication are not static things but must always be in the process of development. As soon as it’s understood what the benefits of messages like that shared in this video are - without experiencing it - only knowing “what” is being pointed at, then the language and method will ALWAYS get hijacked by people who understand nothing about the essence of compassion. This is just the consequence of being made in the image of God. All true faiths devolve into religiosity/pyramid schemes, given enough time - you must discover the source of all of the stories… within yourself. And then you can have better answers for people such as yourself who cannot be convinced by the means of platforms such as this. It’s understandable. I hope this helps.

I did the training in 1982 and a number of workshops/seminars after that. I even worked as a volunteer. Werner Erhard is one of the greatest of existential thought. However, he is no cure all for real emotional and mental issues. He's a master at getting people to work for him for free. He has a lot to offer people who are emotionally and mentally stable. One thing I did not agree with the Training was to keep trainees up at all hours for two weekends and the yelling and screaming the trainers did to trainees. He capitalized well for himself and for a man with no formal education is quite knowledgable. I enjoyed learning from Werner but was disappointed he did not transform my life true to me. Therefore, I take his wisdom as just general knowledge. The fanatics that follow him are conned. Especially the ones who worked for him for free and pay him. I was one of those and will never again give my time in free labor or pay him.

I wonder what the value is of claiming that those who worked for Werner and his "followers are all conned?" Do you know each and every one of his followers? And if you don't what is the purpose in claiming something so unprovable?

  • @drew6524
    @drew6524 Рік тому +3

EST training may be useful and for that I am glad. However, I would like to point out that each and every aspect of this teaching was taken from other systems and cobbled together.
For instance in one conceptual frame, Erhard behaves as a wrathful teacher as per Vajrayana. Except Vajrayana has been around many hundred of years, asks no money, is never cruel and focuses on loving kindness in action. So so so many other systems already set out the teaching of est until this guy claimed ownership of these ideas.
I am glad people have benefited however with any cheaper knock off you always receive less.
In the original Taoism, Vajrayana, etc etc etc (read for yourself) the goal isn’t puffing up the self and lavishing in the glory of the illusion of self. “Oh I am so amazing” and such. In the teachings ripped off to “create” est the goal was always to help OTHERS to focus on OTHERS to help OTHERS “find themselves” and in the process as the illusions slough off like dead skin, the shining true self comes through. But this self doesn’t need to be confident or clear or strong or wise or ANYTHING other than it is.
YOU do not need to be ANYTHING other than what you are. ALL the answers, ALL the huge magic is right here and now. In fact techniques are the greatest barrier! I say this as someone who has deeply practiced everything from esoteric Taoism to Rosicrucianism- Franz Kafka the brilliant writer said it best:
“Sit at your desk and listen. Don't even listen, just wait. Don't wait, be still and alone. The whole world will offer itself to you.”
You don’t need some famous book or seminar. You don’t need to pay a cent. You don’t need to bleed sweat. True once your path begins you may find you need or want to perform
extraordinary physical feats as I have, from gross physical strength and endurance to being able to control my heart rate, blood pressure, pupil dilation (supposedly impossible to do consciously) brain waves and much more.
Eventually the path requires guidance once you have sparked the furnace awake. Then you can follow your truth to quiet Zen or the siddhi (the contested yet proven abilities) of Laya Yoga and Kundalini practices and millions of other options.
But the START OF YOUR JOURNEY-
this isn’t in any book or seminar, this is the quote of Kafka.
Just be and allow the world to bloom.
Every word in that sentence is important, very important.
“Just” is literal. ONLY be. Don’t be thinking or be worrying or be comfortable or uncomfortable or happy or sad JUST BE.
“Allow” communicates how the passive can move mountains or change lives, and that it is NECESSARY to allow or you are not “just” being or just allowing.
“The world” means everything. And idea ineffable until understood.
“Bloom” is evocative but only understood once it happens.
Point is you don’t need a secret decoder ring or to join any weird club to find your true best self or to free yourself from illusion.
You may end up with one, but the start, just the a Japanese swordmaker, the entirety of the blade or the path is born like a seed in that spark.
    The spark of just being.
I hope I saved someone wasted time, money or confusion.
I’ll probably receive hateful messages, I won’t read them.
I know what they will say. I know the “so you think ur better than me” and the “my path is perfect you asssnipe!!” and the popular “I didn’t understand what you said so I know your wrong because someone said a lie which I understood!” Etc etc
Ego defending itself. That’s expected and I have no Ill will for you folk, I hope you become happier.
If anyone resonates with what I’ve said dm me and I’ll tell you much more. I don’t need money or clicks or anything, just offering an actual human dialogue instead of surfing curated videos looking for an answer to a question most of us haven’t yet composed.
All beliefs are welcome, all types of people accepted. Nothing is requested- money, clout, authority, zilch. All I ask is that you give anything I say 24 hours before responding so you do not simply re-act to it based on your limitations. Re-act is to act again in the same way. A habit. A habit is a friction against a world which does not follow the same habits and thus is not the best way to process knowledge or to act.
    Anyways- that’s all.
    Have a free day! 𓂀

I'd agree that knowledge is a privilege not a gift or right. And that knowledge we have the ethical obligation to share. Seeking aggrandisement or fame and fortune is a an addiction not a right. To elevate oneself from a gutter must be an obligation and a responsibility of what it is to be a man or whole woman. Perfection is for narcissism and how you wish to be viewed by others. Achievement is that realisation and to strive for enlightenment. Nature has a wisdom and can be used to benefit a deep care for one another. Not for affirmation but to liberate justice and an ethical awareness of exploitation and enslavement to addictions which devalue others and yourself. To share food, shelter and access to water for washing is a must but anything else is irrelevant and unnecessary to survivel. Some have accused me of fascism while others call me a paedophile and disciplinarian. Lots of ignorance and prejudice but no progress in human behaviour or understanding of compassion or the extent of my ruthless discipline to achieve my objective which is to free people of drugs, alcohol and sexual exploitation. These are ethics and I'll die for them. I have no wealth and no ambition to aquire status which corrupts the soul and reduces man to be a slave to another. Emotional blackmail has no value but anger is a natural response to ignorance. But, that does not justify violence because that ambition is alien to me as a sexual drive which I don't share with anyone. Purity has a healing quality and can reduce anger and my respect for others comes through enlightenment of compassion and humility. Until we can share and cooperate we cannot arrive at agreement and conflict will ensue. To be truly free one has to reject pursuit it as a right. I therfore consider animals to be allowed rights to redress abuses we have enacted and we must learn how to show our humility for they are a judgement of civility and dignity. Christ attempted to teach morality and compassion but we need to build upon that mission in order to consider ourselves a civilised and worthy of enslavement to honour animals with love and compassion.

Too bad his work was full of "pressure" to share i.e. sell the programs to everyone you know. It had the vibe of an MLM, I felt I had to be talking to everyone about Landmark or I wasn't playing life to the fullest. In the Forum, they say that pressure doesn't really exist anywhere but in yourself, so that innoculates Landmark ever being at fault in pressuring people. They get a lot of people to provide free labour to keep the organization running, but call it "assisting". He assumed a new identity "Werner Erhard" and quoted German philosophers which gave him an air of being of that ilk by association. I think it's a lot of hot air when you look at the reality of how the organization is run.

Werner is one of my heroes. Out of my participation in the Forum in Sunnyvale, I won the U.S. espionage terror war in Mexico. I have a war syndrome now and would like to be granted the social grace of being allowed to have my own personality while I resolve the imposter spy terror thespian issue there. I am not their replicant. They took out 'the act' distinction and inserted "their needs and wants," down to wanting to control my speaking as an Intro Leader, literally word for word. " there is nothing inherently significant" when describing his awakening experience. No God. Then he was free. Yea no longer any limitation and it was up to him (he says 6 times)
"They knew it was not going to be Sunday school" His wake up call is the opposite? Werner's definition of "integrity" is the dictionary definition minus the key factor of morality which is number 1 in most definitions. This is key to understanding him and new age thought, There is no evil, and yes there is an experience of freedom when you drop morality and make yourself into God or substitute your self for God. "What drives me is to discover a new meaning for what it means to be human" "what is it to be a self? " "I am" Jesus said "I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the Father but by me" What we need is the forgiveness of God. It's not too late Werner, Come to Jesus his saving grace is beyond any human endeavor. Satan said he would be greater than God. There is no greater love than the Love of Christ, his love for you. Every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb.

Werner does follow with: "It's a good start and there is a lot more that can be said". However, Werner had studied Martin Heidegger and existential phenomenology from the late Professor at UC Berkeley, Hubert Dreyfus. In fact, it is Werner's introduction to Heidegger's thinking, circa 1975, came from Dreyfus and eventually led to the transition to the Forum and the use of Heideggerian terms like 'authenticity', 'tranquil obviousness', 'thrown-ness', 'being', 'being-in-the-world' and "moods'. Given that background, Werner understands the distinction between "angst/anxiety' and 'fear', and more than likely saw this was not the time or place to go off on such conversations. Nevertheless, Doty's answer to Laura's question of 'refugees' is representative of what Heidegger was against --- against what is called or understood as Cartesianism or ultra-modern Platonism.

His name is John Paul Rosenberg, a former used-car salesman, who deserted his wife and kids. Changing your name, inventing a transforming 'experience' and then citing existentialist philosophers for a living does not change that. The technique of sharing in this video is the same as used in the Forum: using the acting out of one 'authentic' sob story on stage to identify with for others. It's part of the est/LMF 'technology', for invoking empathy etc. .
