    The stylist that cut my hair the other day started off by telling me what I wanted was a style and not a cut, even though I specifically asked for a horse shoe cut that is basically a U shaped cut bc I've read that is the cut Dita Von Teese gets. (And showed pictures) He said my hair was not long enough to cut into that shape and still be able to get the style I wanted most, eventually he just suggested me not to go too short on the front but did a fantastic job with the rounded back and all around U shape even if not as deep which will be better for me for lazy non styled days. I commend him for being so understanding of my needs and wants even if we started off with a bit of a hiccup. This man (I'm staying in Mexico, BTW) ended up giving me the best haircut and all around service I've gotten in a long time which is hard to come by. He's a keeper! I'm glad even when not staying here my hometown is right across the border bc I def want to return to his salon. 😊

    My hair is about the same length as Veronica Lake and what I have found over the years that works for that length of hair is to use rollers or rods for your wet sets, a traditional pin curl set ain't gonna do it. It will fall apart through out the day and won't hold up. When you get your hair cut, you should still have it cut in a u shape but the shortest layer should be right at your shoulders, and curve around from there. Make sure you brush it out really well with a paddle brush before shaping. When you are shaping make sure to start at the middle of the neck and work out to one side and then rinse and repeat on the other side. I can usually get my curls to stay about 5 days with this method. Also, using a good brush out hair spray works wonders for those vintage do's.

    This is a fantastic video; I know for certain that I can't do vintage styles (my hair is even longer than Iris') but I've always wondered what the "plain" unstyled cut looked like for the most authentic 50's look - because I've never seen any starlet that didn't look perfectly coiff'd, haha. :)

      Lucy's Corsetry just get some rollers and put them in your hair then brush it out the next day obviously look how you want to your roller to get the right look

    I have rather thick hair and had been doing vintage hair styles for a while but they never turned out quite right till i found your Video about Midis... Took it to my hairdresser (who i found because i asked for bettie bangs and she knew it straight away!) and she cut it to style (perhaps slightly longer layers than the diagram said) Now considering my hair is bleached to death (i have purple hair) and its thick, it dosnt like to do anything i tell it but she cut it into "my" version of the midi and BAM!!! amazing vintage hair!! oh my god! Cannot tell you how happy i was! It looks perfect and I can get on with doing Victory rolls etc etc, Yours, Iris', cherrydoll face and vintage vanity help me learn how to do it all but i have to say a good cut helps so much for a more authentic look! You guys are fabulous! living ina small town and being the only 1940s/50s looking gal around you guys help me so much! thankyou!!

    I'm so glad you did this video. I've seen all your previous ones discussing cuts, but they were about middys and I could never convince myself to go that short or that layered. I then had thought about just getting some layers whacked in all over, and not telling the stylist anything too complicated. I get the feeling now from this video that I made the right decision, as my hair is similar to yours so it probably wouldn't like the middy, and getting a modern layered cut won't give me the look I want. I don't do vintage styles enough to justify a cut like this yet, and lately I've been growing my hair out just to see how long I can get it, but it's all stuff to keep in mind now.

    I got 4 inches taken off and left the back a bit longer and also added light layers at the bottom and what a huge improvement this made doing pin curl sets.
    I enjoy your videos so much.

    This is so helpful! I got my hair cut into a pixie about 14 months ago so I could grow out my natural color. Now that it is getting longer I want to start trying out vintage styles again but it will need a good cut first. Thanks for the info!

    I too have found that my (very) thin hair when cut in a traditional middy looks great when I first take it out of curlers (overnight wet set), but as the day drags on, it ends up looking like a 70s style. It is very frustrating! It is reassuring that it isn't only me. I think that I felt more comfortable when my hair was somewhat longer and I am growing it out a bit now, I had a better time with curls staying and I was able to do victory rolls and things. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for the tip on the Rita Hayworth style needing to be layered! That's what I'm aiming for. I just got my super thick hair cut into a shoulder-length middy style, with blunt ends, and tried a foam roller set (for the first time ever) last night. The wave was lovely and just what I wanted, but the bottom of my hair stuck out like a shelf, practically. It looked like Roseanne Roseannadanna's but with a 40s wave, even after a ton of brushout and taming. NOT the look I was going for! I think I'm going to go back and ask my stylist for layers. My worry is that the layers will make it a lot harder to roll, but something's gotta give.

    • @LisaFreemontStreet
      @LisaFreemontStreet  9 років тому

    Long time viewer, first time commenting. Great video! I thought I was the only one on earth who I struggled with my haircut and getting my vintage styles to work. The Middy was a nightmare, while tapered layers made my hair shatter (I have REALLY bad hair). I ended up with a Jean Seberg-esque pixie cut, which I love! Thank you, because you sort of inspired that leap 😊

    This is a really interesting video , and very helpful . I live in a very isolated area , and the selection of hair dressers is limited . I have used the word " Middy" with them , and they have never heard of it , and look at me very confused . So I will try to use my words a bit differently this time , and keeping it simple , and see how I do . My hair is also very fine , and thin , so this was very helpful , thank you :)

    VERY informative. I've just grown out a total hack job and am grateful for this wording you've given for a proper cut. Just wondering (I'm an older gal) is this longer midi similar, or the same as the old 70's shag? And can you do simple "rock-a-billy' up do with this cut? THANK YOU ... you inspire me so much!

    • @LisaFreemontStreet

    • @JAMcRae
      @JAMcRae 10 років тому

      I'm so glad heather above referenced the Shag, I took the Middy Long diagram to a stylist i've used once before, and she was sort of dismissive with a "oh, that's just a Shag", and then proceeded to cut. Not knowing what a Shag cut was I really wasn't sure if I got what I asked. Would the difference be that the Shag doesn't have the 'distinct layers' that appear in the Middy cut diagram?

    • @winterpluto
      @winterpluto 10 років тому

      Ja McRae it really depends on the stylist. A shag does seem to be less uniform.

    I have naturally spiral curly hair would the middy work for me or would it be some horrible pyramid/poodle hybrid?

    • @LisaFreemontStreet
      @LisaFreemontStreet  10 років тому +1

      For you I would just do something with layers to avoid bulk...following the middy diagram will look very very short on spiraled curls.

  • @cheyennebenton2835
    @cheyennebenton2835 9 років тому

    I have very long, thick, naturally curly hair that I desperately need to get cut soon (the ends are so split, they are awful!). Whenever I do vintage looks, I usually have to split my hair in half horizontally, braid the underneath half of it and pin it to my head, then I curl the rest of it and pin some of it up to make it look short (sorry, I know that probably sounds confusing). I want to keep my hair medium long because I love having it long when I wear it naturally, but I would really like to get a vintage cut as far as layering goes so it would make my hair easier to manage when I decide to do vintage styles. Do you know how well vintage hair cuts (such as the long midi) work with naturally curly hair? If I were to get this cut, on the days I wear my hair naturally, would I get that weird curly triangle hair effect?

    This is off-topic...my fiance wants to move to the South. He wants to move to Alabama and I told him I would only move to TN (had incredible vacations there as a child). Is there any place in TN that is NOT high humidity??? I live in Northern IL and our summers are definitely humid but I don't think I can deal with a longer humid season than I already do. I love the snow so much that I have two snowflakes tattooed on chest/shoulder areas! I don't think I can ever move somewhere it doesn't snow but maybe I could be pried away if the humidity wasn't as bad as I imagine....

      If your hair is naturally wavy, I would just ask them to give you a layered cut that is longest in the back. This should be a good start and after you try styling it a few times (a simple roller set and brush out should suffice), you'll know where changes need to be ade.

    I have VERY thick, somewhat wavy dark hair that I dye blue-black. I also have Bettie Page bangs and my hair is pretty long (about 3-4 inches past my collar bone). I'd still like to keep my hair a little long, so do you think just getting U-shaped layers would work for me? My hair is somewhat difficult to curl, should I get heavier layers since its difficult to keep a curl?

    • @LisaFreemontStreet
      @LisaFreemontStreet  9 років тому +1

      I would just do some light layering around the bottom if you like to keep it longer. Sorry this took so long! Kept overlooking this question. Even with light layering you should be able to accomplish a better curl.

      Thank you very much! Since posting the comment I have in fact gotten some U-shaped layers while maintaining the length and find that the styles look much better now! Wet sets actually work pretty well in my hair, because its pretty thin, so long as i set it in the early evening. Since my trim it is actually about mid-back length which is a lot easier to work with. Thank you again for commenting, there were a lot of helpful things here that I didn't know before!
