If anyone is near Cincinnati, OH there's a salon called Black Cat salon that specializes in vintage hair

When I did my apprenticeship the first year of study was pretty much all how to do classic haircuts, reading cutting diagrams, finger waves and different types of pincurls (you'd be surprised by how many types there are). I loved them then and still do as the curl is so much better and longer lasting than rollers, although I do use rollers as well. I also learned different winding patterns for different effects, both for perms and sets. My mum and nanna loved it because I'd use them for practice. This was quite a while ago but I hope they still start with the classics as you get a good grounding on everything else from that.
I ended up leaving hairdressing to go on to other things but I still like to keep my hand in and I'm the go to person for local kids who go retro. Since finding your channel I always refer them, or anyone who wants a retro look to you for style ideas and tutorials as your tutorials are fun, clear and easy to follow and you present them in a style that isn't daunting so they know that the styles are achievable.
You really are a gifted presenter.

I went to the salon in my town, (pop. 8000) and showed the stylist the middy diagram on my phone and followed your tips and I LOVE MY HAIR CUT. She was super nice and not put off at all by my giving her the diagram! And now I have the cut I always wanted, but didn't know how to get.

You posted my this literally the day before my haircut appointment, and it really clinched the deal. I've been telling my stylist all these steps in an effort to get something close to a middy, instead of a middy. After seeing your video I just said WHY NOT?? What am I doing, skirting the issue?? I'm committed to this look! And now here I sit, happily cut. Thank you!

2 years ago I took that exact diagram to an older stylist who said she could do it. I ended up getting an honest to God mullet, and I was so mad! It took over a year to grow out.

Thank you so much for this awesome and helpful video!! I've been debating taking the plunge on getting a long middy cut for ages but too afraid something bad would happen and was just sort of making do. But I watched this video (twice), took a bunch of notes, and brought in the diagram and some pictures to my lovely stylist last night. 5 inches later and I LOVE IT! Pin curled it last night because I couldn't wait and it turned out a billion times better (tho I need to adjust somewhat for the new length/style). Thank you for your rockin channel!

The same thing happens to me. It’s so disrespectful. Like? If I’m paying you, do what I ask please! It’s my hair and if I hate it as much as you say I will, I’ll pay you more to fix it, or it’ll grow back!! I had the same experience when asking for this cut. I’ve also been flat out refused a dye job because my hair’s “just too pretty”

Yess it’s strange to me. It’s is... all that whys you said! They have no proper setting lotion, Iv had Velcro rollers and they are awful for me, I brought my metal rollers. I mention making appointment they can’t straiten my hair, and not shear cut it. Omg
I sent a video to last gal and she said I cut 6 inches and I said Ohh no, 3 because when it’s curled it shrinks up. She must have cut 5 inches and spoke with her 2 days after and she said oh I was going BY the picture you send and videos, umm 🤔 not what I asked multiple times.

Finding a hair dresser is like finding a significant other. It takes so much trust, and I feel like you have to have personalities that CLICK. I feel like I have to really like the person. I only ever get trims, and truth be told, I usually feel like a burden to the women I've been to. haha which is funny, because quite a bit of this interview was about ill-informed stylists, and what to do if your hair gets ruined, and all the WAYS that it can get ruined.haha. which speaks to the difficulty of finding ""the one"" lol I wish Natalie would have talked more about what She means by "Longer layer" and "shorter Layers" it seem obvious, haha but....... its not obvious to me :) like the final footage of your cut looks just like a regular cut to me, it seemed quite well blended, and not blunt at all ... I don't get it... i dont see blunt cuts in your final hair cut footage....lol i dk... :) I guess i just don't get it..... :) I'm glad you like it :) and your final STYLE is GORGEOUS :) you're so sweet.

I have to say, the hairstylist, I love how her long hair lays. It looks stunning. I like her soft curls, for anyone can make them out, whereas some people that curl their hair, they are too soft to detect. Good job💁👍

Really helpful video with some hair history. I think blunt cuts look good unstyled on finer hair, but my hair is so thick and coarse that blunt ends just look like a broom. I didn't realize that having the ends point cut could be interfering so much when I try to style my hair vintage. I'm going to have to find a way to consolidate my vintage wardrobe with wild 80s amazon hair or something.

I have been a subby for approx. 2 years now and I just really love your videos. This is one of your best. I have had a really hard time finding a stylist who even knows what a middy is. This was extremely helpful. One question, Can this cut be worn in a much longer length? My hair is mid back in length and while I don't mind shortening it a bit, a short length just does not do me any favors.

Wanted to throw a tip your way, you comment that your hair is really processed and you take extra precautions.
I bleach for platnium blonde and my stylist recommended these new Olaplex treatments. It claims to repair bonds in your hair, not just patch it up. I was skeptical yet desperate. So, bought a bottle online. : More bounce and my hair is softer. It actually works wonders.
Use it like a hair mask once a week (olaplex No. 3). It's really stepped up my maintainence game. Think you'd love it. Love ya.

Next time you visit, can you ask if there are any perms that are available now (since pinterest is full of new perm methods pictures, not sure if they are true or not) that can be sort of a faux vintage look. So, that you could wear them for everyday and then just do wet sets for date night or something special.

I've been going to a cosmetology school for my haircuts lately and the instructor didn't know how to read the diagram. I mean, I've never been to beauty school and I understood it, but even with the diagram and pictures of an unstyled middy I still had trouble getting across what I wanted and ended up leaving with long layers. I'm going to give it another few weeks and go back with written instructions for how to cut it and tell them "THIS is what I want." (Either that or I'm going to pester my sister's sister-in-law, who will cut it how I want it, but she lives a day's drive away so she's not terribly convenient.)

I have the middy (I cut it myself, i had a mohawk and I wanted to grow it out so i cut my hair into the middy as it would look better with my hair and i wanted length!) but i don't need to style it at all. I have naturally curly hair and to be honest, that haircut compliments my natural hair so much better than a blunt or layered cut (which is too thick at the bottom) :} Blessed are the curly vintage girls! :D

I went to a hair saloon, the gal read the diagram and I showed her examples but she ended up doing the opposite. The front was longer than the back.... So I just told her to do an even cut and some layers to get it over with.....

What if you have long hair (mid back) and want to do vintage styles, yet not ready to commit to a shorter 'do ?? Mostly because a lot of the time I wear my hair in a ponytail or something like that cause I take care of granddaughter and well she likes to yank on hair at times (trying to break her of that habit by the way). I want something that I can wear my hair vintage for special occasions.

You probably wont see this, since you commented a year ago 😂. Ask for a Femme Fatale! Think Veronica Webb, Lauren Bacall 💗.

Many thanks to Rachel Morscher for the advice. This was my my question. So even if the original commenter, Shelly didn't see it. I am grateful.

7:00 yep I thought that all stylist knew that your hair shrinks up after you put it in rollers and it gets curly so it Hass to be longer so if you tell someone that you want it you know certain length they should cut it longer so then it shrinks up nope I even mentioned that to my stylist two years ago and my hair was super Uber short so I end up doing a lot of finger waves that year. Lol

Does this cut work for thinner hair? I know yours is pretty thick.

    • @JenniferElise
      @JenniferElise  7 років тому +1

I would say yes, I have thinner hair in the front...only the back is somewhat thick. If you're concerned I'd discuss it with your stylist. Plus if you stop by to see Natalie she'll know how to handle your hair. ;)

I don't but I've heard of it on UA-cam. if you search long middy or something along those lines you should be able to find something. don't worry hun I understand the long hair salon nervousness mine used to be down to my bum cause I didn't trust em

I’ve been cursed with having to go to my ‘family’ stylist. I took in the diagram and she told me she never learned with them and said she refused to do what it said because it was choppy. She has also refused to dye my hair 3 times. It’s so ridiculous. Thank god im going away for school soon and can go to someone less awful.

Well for myself when I decide to do a modern middy since my hometown don't have a vintage styled salon my mom explains to her local stylist that it's a Long bob with layers to make my hairstylist life easier, when I decide to do it he thought I gonna dye my hair after doing this style 😂😂😂😂

I genuinely cannot find any hairdressers in the UK who can do this cut, they always go scissor happy. They use razors and thinning scissors. They then use straightening irons. It’s a problem so I try to do this myself. I did hairdressing once at 18 and know basic skills but obviously it will never be as good as going to a salon trying to do this style. If only I could find a hairdresser here.

Great cut. I just wish the sound was better on this video rather than the background music and hair dryer etc.

Unfortunately it's a working salon so I had to work with what I had. Headphones does make it a little easier to hear some of the pointers. Hopefully I'll be able to remake the video one day.
