Man I miss Stan Winston...Aliens, Predator, Predator 2, Terminator, Terminator 2, Pumpkinhead, Jurassic Park...So many amazing characters and films. Thank you sir.
I weep for the current generation. They will only know computer generated monsters. When effects teams BUILT their monsters, that's what made them so scary. You could see and touch them, and often there was an actor inside them. I will NEVER be frightened of a computer generated monster.
Did you get to see "Annihilation"? The skull bear scene in that film I think is one of the more impressive examples of the use of animatronic + CG in recent film, and I think that from a visual effects standpoint, one thing that should always remain consistent in order to make an impact on the actor's performances and the audience's ability to tell if something is "real" or not is to make sure that the two (computer-generated & practical prosthetics and animatronics) are seamlessly blended, rather than one being used solely over the other.
I know that feel bro... Horror movies nowadays are so lame and boring. They all look the same for me. And they look so fake, we don't even care about the fake CGI crap monsters. I feel sad for this generation too.
I absolutely agree with you!! That is something I've been saying for years! Any of the behind scenes featurettes you'd see from the late 70's and through the 80's, you'd see the effects team workshop filled with all these fantastic creatures and weird characters and the sheer effort and love that goes into making them! ILM was one such place, whereas now it's a bland office space filled with people sitting at computers and animating things, It's soulless!! These days there's guys in motion capture suits leaping around going RAAARRR only to be animated in later, it's laughable!! I also remember seeing an online article for Giant Freakin' Robot or something along those lines for the proposed remake of "The Creature from the Black Lagoon!" (Which John Carpenter was going to direct in the early 90's, his script is online too apparently!) However, this article showed a creature design and the author of the article said "If Universal could get behind this with some serious CGI, this will be awesome!" WHY??? CGI is not fucking scary, if anything it takes you out of the physicality of the scene!! When an effect is 'In Camera' it grounds you in the illusion, there's a physical presence! Jaws, Pumpkinhead, Alien, the Werewolf from American Werewolf in London, John Carpenter's The Thing, Predator to name but a few all have memorable monsters because they were slap bang in front of us, they interacted with the cast and these fuckers had a nightmarish presence! When practical special effects are on set, it gives the actors something to react to, it drives their performance and makes their plight to survive all the more exciting for us, the audience, to be drawn in! CGI does have its uses, granted but practical special effects will always be superior due to the emotions they illicit from us and our nightmares. The scene with Pumpkinhead leering into the kid's face in the wardrobe with his drooling, twisted smile has stuck with me since I was an 11 year old kid back in '87! I even showed some of my younger workmates the Chest ripper scene and Blood test scene from The Thing, they were opened mouthed and were saying "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?" later, they came up asking me about more films like that, I told them to look up Pumpkinhead first!! Old school movie monsters fucking rule!!!
As a native of Appalachia, this film scared the shit out of me as a kid. I remember a new kid that moved here and he asked me if Pumpkinhead was a real legend. On behalf of monster/slasher/horror fans, I thank the Stan Winston School. The tireless efforts you put forth to bring fantasies, dreams, nightmares, and imagination to life can never be fully appreciated. Also a big thank you to the man himself- Stan Winston R.I.P. for creating Pumpkinhead, one of my favorite films. May your legacy never die.
Stan Winston School for my money legends have start somewhere and continue for some reason, If nothing else Stan and his crew of awesomeness brought it to life for a number of us.
The scene where Pumpkin head walks past the large cabin window is still my fave, just the sheer size of the creature, I was expecting a more human sized creature....this design stands tall between the Alien and the Predator. Keep the awesome vids coming!
A huge fan of Pumpkinhead's design from the first time I laid eyes on him. Many cinematic creatures since have borrowed elements of his remarkable design. I can't say that I blame them!
CGI should be only used when it's *NECESSARY* and *impossible to do pratically not oversaturating them. Rendering the texture to make it look very realistic takes time, talent and money. You don't want to use up all of your budget and the studio may not be giving anymore money if they see the cost overruns.
So inspiring. I first saw "Pumpkinhead" late at night, all by myself, on one of the cable movie channels, and though I sometimes avoid a number of the newer-style horror movies (maximum blood and gore, minimum story and writing), when I saw that it was not only FX'd by Stan Winston's shop, but was also directed by Mr. Winston, I was hooked, watched it, got scared to death, and was amazed by every second of it. The fact that your artistry took the beautiful face, anatomy, and grace of the marvelous Lance Henriksen and turned him into a creature with so terrifying an aspect, of such ferocity, and yet of such incredible singularity and style, was, and is, an accomplishment that nobody else can match. You guys are the greatest in the world. I wish Mr. Stan Winston had directed many more films. Thank you so very much for sharing your unmatched artistry here. I love it. And I'm learning from it. Blessings to you all!
1:35 lol "Very serious young men"... who had no idea that there would be an internet or a UA-cam one day. But that was honestly some awesome work they did. Fantastic creature design!
It takes time to render those textures to make it look very realistic and that costs time, manpower and money. You need to properly distribute your budget as the studio may not giving any more of it.
I've always loved Pumpkinhead's design since I was a kid and always thought he was an underrated creature. One of the most terrifying aspect of that monster is his height, shoulders, and his eyes...well, everything about that creature is just simply menacing. Awesome creature. I think maybe a remake is in order even though the first film is still a very, very dark and eerie film and is a classic in my book. I actually want a newer generation to see this creature because I think it deserves it.
I'm from Kentucky and this scared the shit out me as a kid. I now have two sons who will not watch this film. Can't wait for the Blu-Ray this September and I hope the reboot has that feel from the original. Great job!
The practical effects for _Pumpkinhead_ are absolutely brilliant. The creature looks like something you could actually see in real life, and moreover, definitely _wouldn't want to see!_ Liked & subscribed!
I was tremendously sad when Stan Winston passed away. That meant no more amazing movie monsters built in the way only Winston and his incredible team could build them
A Pumpkinhead Prequel movie might be interesting.. A movie that explores the background of Haggis (the witch), the deformed child who was buried in the pumpkin patch, and the origins of the Pumpkinhead demon. As part of the story, Haggis could be seen as a young woman, showing how she became a witch and how her connection with Pumpkinhead began.. This story could take place, before any of the other characters, in the first movie, were born. Haggis has obviously lived a LONG time, and there could be an interesting story to tell..
Stan Winston School I love the premise of the movie. With a solid story it can only get better. If i recall Pumpkin head was basically vengeance incarnate, so not likely your going live to regret such a thing. Gore is not always needed for a properly executed traumatic childhood scare. lol.
I love this opening. The background sounds like Steve Martin SNL skit. "What the Hell is THAT!". Playing along just proves how much fun it was to work with everyone. If you enjoy what you do, you never truly work a day in your life. hehe.
Stan Winston is the reason for most of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. He is the GOAT of special effects hands down there will never be practical effects because of cgi I’m glad I grew up with Stan. This movie scared the shit out of me as a kid and I still can’t cut off the lights without running up the stairs at almost 40 because of this movie
The very best part of the movie were the scenes with Haggis the witch, portrayed by veteran character actress Florence Schauffler. Her screen time was limited, but she dominated every scene she was in.
This beats the pants off CGI. CGI always looks so obvious. When I watch horror movies these days and a creature appears I think "huh, that's an ok bit of CGI I guess". But when I watch Pumpkin head and he makes an entrance, I feel more like "Jesus that guy still scares me."
Wow ! I never thought you guys would take my feedback seriously and more than that, apply it so fast ! I thought it would be just one input among thousands. Glad to see you guys take the users seriously. It's an honor to be a member of the school !
Hey Sam, Congrats on getting your first film job! That's a huge milestone in any FX artist's career. And thanks for the words of appreciation for the FX wizards who've inspired you to pursue an artistic path in your life. The best way to pay them back for inspiring you is to make great art! -Matt
Florence Schauffler should've been given an Academy Award for her outstanding performance! Without the character of Haggis the witch of the woods, this film would've been another ordinary horror movie. Incidentally, Haggis is actually a Scottish pudding made from sheep innards, oatmeal, onion and spices. Rest in peace, Florence Schauffler.
POV: You're looking for a comment that isn't dunking on CGI But seriously, this stuff is awesome. Pumpkinhead is one of my favorite horror media of all time.
I actually love this creature even more than the Aliens.. and would LOVE to be able to figure out how to do this myself. Especially since I read that none of the actual suits survived and even the masks are long gone. Would love to have access to the tools time and supplies to try and sculpt something like this.
spyderskiss Have you looked at SWS website? I'm sure they could recommend any one of the DVD's, It's what i am doing in place of an actual brick n mortar school. They even have i'm sure noticed live webcam classes. True spirit of Dick Smith.
tryptychUK, Happy to hear you enjoyed the video. And yes, the animatronic baby pumpkinhead had a fiberglass skull, which was segmented and animated with servos and cables to create facial movement. Animatronic skulls are also sometimes made from vacuformed plastic. -Matt
After some time the producer of Saw has acquired the Rights to produce a reboot. Here's hoping he involve Legacy Effects the team who've worked with Stan Winston on his original classic to do the creature effects on the new film. bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3401637/saw-producer-remake-pumpkinhead/
I just about choked on my food when Alec was dancing suiting up Tom earlier on in the video LMFAO these guys are amazing, thank you so much for uploading this!:D
This wss so awesome, thanks for the vid insight. in all honesty, punkinhead is the most UNDERRATED horror film of all time, great make up and mechanical
It's a shame this wasn't on the Region 2 dvd!! I also wish we could have got a commentary from Stan himself, sadly that never happened! Though a commentary from Tom and Alec would be pretty cool too!! (Here's hoping it happens!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻)
My Uncle let me watch Pumpkinhead when I was around 6.Of course I begged him to let me watch it.My Mom wasn't happy with my Uncle. He passed away last year. Thanks for frighten me with Pumpkinhead.
This gave me some wicked ideas for some of my own creatures to experiment on anatomy. The holes in the neck along with the absence of nostrils made me think that is where it's sense of smell would be relocated if it could smell at all. Great video and thanks for posting. Keep up the good work and inspiration.
Thanks very much. As soon as my work is in anyway decent, I will show it. I don't know why, but designing monsters is just something that I love. Making them is a bit different, since I do that mostly digitally (taught myself 3D Max, trying to figure out Zbrush). I hope to get more training, as I feel my drawing skills need work, especially anatomy and other areas. since drawing is what I love.
I have done SFX makeup for years and just started getting into props and Masks. Pumpkinhead is my favorite monster and I have been wanting to do this for Halloween for years. Even just make a marquee. I will be over ambitious and try to recreate him in the next year or so. lol. It will probably take that long.
when i was 4 years old i watched pumpkinhead. it was the scariest thing ever to me i was so scared i was afraid to walk into the bathroom and needed someone to go in there and open the shower door and turn the light on to make sure pumpkinhead was in there. i was a little metal head at a early age with the jean jacket and heavy metal patches so i hung out with my old sisters and i watched all the scary movies they never bothered me. but for some damn reason seeing pumpkinhead in the trees and hearing the audio tapes scared the shit out of me. he looked so real back then i was convinced it was the one creature that was actually real lol.
Razvan, it's our pleasure to hear you and respond. We're getting better at it! But if we miss something, be persistent and let us know how we can enhance the experience. We're working on it every day and you deserve the best. - John
Del, Welcome to our channel. We hear you!! Our mission with Stan Winston School is to remind people that the best way to create a BELIEVABLE fantasy character is to use every trick in the book. There's nothing wrong with CGI, but it's just one tool. We need to get back to using all the tools. And it's happening, we're at the beginning of a Pratical FX Renaissance! Thanks for keeping the faith. -Matt
Stan Winston School CGI causes anaconda to fly and lake placcid aligator runs like roided michael johnson, too many movie sequels got destroyed by cgi that older generations will not watch movies in cinema anymore.
This is soooo cool man, I just love it all everything the creating, making, the film is one of my favorite movies of all time I always come back to on Halloween 🎃 October month❤️🙏✨ thank you everyone who participated creating the monster I wouldn't have found more interest if the demon didn't look as amazing and outstanding as pumpkin head looks.
I like to think of Pumpkinhead as the last rubber movie monster, although I think that credit goes to that blobby guy in Slither. Nowadays, the only times you'll ever see a rubber suit is in a remake, sequel, or foreign film. Even comic movies are doing more and more creatures in CGI, like in Guardians of the Galaxy, or that new Fantastic 4 movie.
+GIGGEDandBLADED Okay, you got me there. That, or I should have included continuations in my list. This is news to me, though. Around the time I wrote that comment, the last anyone heard of Star Wars, even Yoda had gone digital.

Thanks so much for all your hard work. The one thing I think is so important in this line of work is not teachable, it the fact that you all had fun, and it shows. Thanks for posting. Sleep with one eye open and have a "HORRIFIC" day. B)
This is a really great video, I love seeing the stages of development and the fact that you guys work with real materials! Given for the time period there wasn't much choice, but I prefer foam and plastic models to computer graphics any day. Help keep old school FX alive!
yellowcougar18~ We have made the DVDs so they play in all regions. Region 0! You will find them operable in Europe for sure. Other than that, you may stream anything you like on our site. Of course having the thing at home is always nice. I hope you are happy with your new adventure into our tutorials. Let us know and share your work! - John
Me too! When the scifi channel started making the new ones my dad and I sent them several letters trying to get a pumpkinhead vs Jeepers Creepers movie, but obviously, it was to no avail. The Scifi channel also used to be great at one point, now they're known for their cheap, stupid movies and it makes me hate the world
This movie is old but I still love it because if the man human gets hurt like shot or something the monster gets hurt to I wish iiiii could be in one of this mans movie's I would love to I got the look and every thing

Pumpkinhead is just so awesome, he really should be in a movie where he fights Jeepers Creepers or even better, Predator!
This movie is an absolute classic in terms of 80s Horror. It's a shame it doesn't get the recognition it deserves
My favorite horror movie of all time, "Pumpkin Head". What a great story and what great FX.
Thanks for saying that David. There's SO much more coming. We've just begun to groom Stan's archives and there's years worth. So stay tuned! -John
Josh, Sounds like your uncle was an awesome guy. We're sorry for you loss. But we're happy to hear that you shared a love of Pumpkinhead! -Matt

Oh the good ol’ days. I miss Stan.
You guys are brilliant. I will never get tired if watching these amazing creation videos. Thank you for the great movie memories!
I like both cg and this kinda stuff. It's not that movies today use too much cg. it's that they use it when it's not needed.
Keep away from Pumpkinhead, Unless you're tired of living, His enemies are mostly dead, He's mean and unforgiving.
BoglinZilla, The poem that started it all. Glad to have you here on our UA-cam channel! - Matt

Bolted doors and windows barred
Guard dogs prowling in the yard
Won't protect you till you're dead
Nothing will from Pumpkinhead.

Fuck I love how they did effects back in the day. Was one of my dream jobs as a kid to do stuff like this.
I saw this movie when it was released & still remember the eyes to this day. Awesome to see how this was made!

I would love to see a Pumpkinhead sequel that was more akin to the original film, one can only hope.
Speak the devil, word has it that there's a reboot in the works, I'm initially skeptical but hopeful that they can pull it off.

What a great classic, Thanks a million guys.
What's it like to touch so many lives? Must feel good 👍?
Absolutely love this movie!! One of my all time faves... Helped to inspire me to become a makeup artist myself!!!
You guys really do awesome work,
when i was 4 years old i watched pumpkinhead. it was the scariest thing ever to me i was so scared i was afraid to walk into the bathroom and needed someone to go in there and open the shower door and turn the light on to make sure pumpkinhead was in there. i was a little metal head at a early age with the jean jacket and heavy metal patches so i hung out with my old sisters and i watched all the scary movies they never bothered me. but for some damn reason seeing pumpkinhead in the trees and hearing the audio tapes scared the shit out of me. he looked so real back then i was convinced it was the one creature that was actually real lol.
Razvan, it's our pleasure to hear you and respond. We're getting better at it! But if we miss something, be persistent and let us know how we can enhance the experience. We're working on it every day and you deserve the best. - John
As a child I lived in a rural area, and Pumpkinhead was one of the freakiest monsters I saw. Happy to say that it gave me nightmares. lol
Thanks you for this videos im a big fan of pumpkinhead and it's really cool to see how it's been created
Masterpiece 💎
What a treat! Thanks for sharing this.
I saw this as a kid and it used to scare the crud out of me!
We were there when it was being made, and it still scares us! - David
Stan Winston School I can feel you, hehe.
Thanks to YOU AetherDreamSeeker~
Show us what you come up with for sure. -John

Help keep old school FX alive!
yellowcougar18~
We have made the DVDs so they play in all regions. Region 0! You will find them operable in Europe for sure. Other than that, you may stream anything you like on our site. Of course having the thing at home is always nice. I hope you are happy with your new adventure into our tutorials. Let us know and share your work! - John
Just recently rediscovered this movie and it still scares me! I used to watch this with my dad as a kid on the Scifi channel, now spelled syfy.
Me too! When the scifi channel started making the new ones my dad and I sent them several letters trying to get a pumpkinhead vs Jeepers Creepers movie, but obviously, it was to no avail. The Scifi channel also used to be great at one point, now they're known for their cheap, stupid movies and it makes me hate the world
Ugh I couldn't agree more!
To notice your showing Favoritism to your favorite child. Lol. And your favorite kid is Pumpkinhead. :D
Great movie
"Cruel, devious. Purest venom."
i think the witch is amazing

Blood and Guts. That's what we're all about. THE GORE THE MERRIER!
This movie is old but I still love it because if the man human gets hurt like shot or something the monster gets hurt to I wish iiiii could be in one of this mans movie's I would love to I got the look and every thing
Pumpkin head is my favorite figure
Really interesting show. What is the semi-transparent material you use for the "skull" - you could see it clearly on the baby head. Is it fibreglass?
LOVE this movie!
