The combination of Philip K. Dick's story, Paul Verhoeven's directing and Arnold Schwarzenegger's acting made this movie just brilliant. Sci-Fi, Action and Humor, it has it all.
+Hubert Walter It is a shame The Basic Instinct was such a success. It critically misdirected otherwise genious Verhoeven to the realm of the lame pretentious psychodramas.
Remakes and sequels without the original actors never pan out. Look at what happened with last Transporter movie without Statham. I never bothered to watch it.
I think part of the reason why Total Recall and all those 80s/90s movies are pure legend... Is actually the Music. The Music was awesome and at times, it was as if the music was playing in the background, while the actors delivered their lines - they fit so perfectly together. Modern movies just have some throwaway, same old same old, music that seems added as an afterthought to the movie.
My dude I was just talking about this the other day! All this music was composed and performed. Noe the studios just have some jag off at a computer pro tolling his way to a score. And everybody EVERYBODY is just trying to make the Hans Zimmer inception sound. And practical FX man. I hate those Robert Rodriquez Machete style digital squibs that junk is video game retarded.
I totally agree. Jerry Goldsmith's score for this was amazing. The opening credit's title music gave me goosebumps when I went to see it at the cinema.
Glacielfire But i love the "Dream" music and that alien innerside ..that Kuato theme, that i remember was used in a car commercial. By the way, Jerry Goldsmith music for Basic Instinct (and with Paul Verhoeven too) was used in another car commercial with Sharon Stone...; Jerry Goldsmith was a master and his music was so...magical and powerful, that the music for pictures is not the same without him. Now you have that media-venture music of Zimmer and Co. and all the people saying "What a great music score"!!! You people would really must listen Jerry Goldsmith scores like Poltergeist...and Chinatown.!!
This is the best movie Schwarzenegger has ever been in, and I think he can thank Verhoeven for that. I just wish Verhoeven would have done more movies like this. Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers are some of the best movies ever made.
The best Sci-fi/Action Movie in the 90's. This is a real Classic already and it still out number alot of todays sci-fi/action Movies. When it comes to Movies and Music Nothing beats the great 80's and the 90's. This Era was the Golden Era from Hollywood in my Eyes.
Every time I see the ending of Total Recall, I'm grinning like a total idiot. This movie makes me feel like a million bucks. Everything about it is just fantastic.
This is the only movie that when finished watchin I can watch it right from the beginning again. The films a masterpiece, has SO MANY memorable moment with such a great story especially for its time and I think its one of the best films ever made.
@@TheHelado36 To quote someone else, movies are made dumber so it can be marketed to different cultures. A good well written complex story to English westerners won't sell to China, just like their movies seem weird to us. Movies = dumber/broader audience.

Makes you wonder how many amazing movies are out there that didn't get made for one reason or another. So many projects that could have been great, but fell through because of lack of budget, or getting shot down by a studio executive, or they couldn't find a director to agree to make it... Ah, if only we could reach into alternate worlds and grab a copy of their classic books, films, music and video games.
i love paul verhoeven...he's full of life and likes to pursue his dreams...his films are awesome...i wish we had more "adult" themed films today. the violence in this and Robocop are top notch...they shock but have context...
I agree with you but these movies need publicity. Studios and theaters always are afraid of movies with R ratings because they are afraid kids will not go see them. They need publicity from people. Best examples for me is Deadpool.
I always enjoy Michael Ironside, I enjoyed his voice as darkseid in Superman the animated series. still the best method actor. Makes me feel if I’m an actor and work with this guy, I have to understand that when he is in his method actor mode, I better be careful not to mess with him or question his methods
I don know about others but whenever I think about Total recall it flashes Mars scenes along with the amazing music in my mind...Such is the impact of this movie on me.....Kudos to the creators for creating this master piece 👍👍👍
I remember the first time I noticed this movie in Fangoria. They had images of that eye popping scene, and Benny's mutated arm. I was like "this is the only movie I need to watch".
For me it was the short scene I saw on tv of the fat lady tripping and then the head expanding showing it was Arnold. Took me years before I finally found the movie
Total Recall, Terminator 2 and True Lies are the holy trinity in Arnold"s Movies in my opinion. i still have my copy of total recall on VHS and i watchet it so many times as T2, excelent plot, amazing visual effects and outstanding soundtrack, is a masterpiece movie, no doubt.
That opening with those spectacular credits and jerry goldsmith music...so good it's become a classic. Great story, lines, arnold in his prime, verhoeven in his prime, sharon stone one of the hottest chicks ever seen on screen, if not the hottest...to this day people still talk about the final. I'll never get rid of the DVD
Thanks for the share! Always great to see the making of - Arnie really helped carry this movie into the light, he really knew how decent the story was. So glad they kept in Mars also, unlike the remake. It just loses its mysticism somewhat, failing to 'open your mind'.
Way better than the cold, dead and flat new version. The new Total Recall: awesome special effects and photography, no soul, no personality, couldn't even finish watching it, fell asleep 2 quarters into it.
I'm so happy my father let me go watch this movie, in Switzerland it was forbidden to under 12 years old, I was 11 but very tall so they let me in even though I was alone. One of my favourite movies ever, top twenty for sure!

1980-1990 an amazing decade for movies....and soundtracks.
Feel privileged to have grown up and watched these movies when they were released.
This was one of my fav movies of my childhood.
The 1990s, best years to grow up as a kid.
'Action packed' today means Michael Bay explosion films. Back then 'action packed' meant a good riveting story with some special effects to assist it.

Hard to believe that this movie we take so much for granted these days, was so close to never being made at all.

The 2012 version is not a remake anyway it doesn’t matter the first total recall is the best
Why remake good movies? Choose movies that didn't quite make it, which no one knows about, and make it 10x better.
