- It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Alton Brown forever changed food television. His Food Network show Good Eats mixed humor, science, history and pop culture with cooking in a way no one had seen before. He also never, as he put it, "fetishized the food." He showed that the process wasn't perfect.
Brown has changed a lot over the years, dieting to lose a considerable amount of weight, enduring rough patches in his personal life and exploring his religious beliefs. He has hosted game shows and gone on Broadway. But he's always come back to cooking, even in quarantine. Here's how Alton Brown's transformation is causing a stir.

Good Eats was probably the best cooking show ever created. I learned so much just from Alton Brown compared to most other food shows. He also presented accurate measurements which make recreating recipes much easier.

Made cooking more interesting for sure. Kind of how history in school is boring as all heck, real history is a lot more interesting. Adam ragusea UA-cam channel has some good eats vibes.

I loved the fact that he credited his two biggest influences in making his show was Julia Childs and Monty Python.
I think he always references Mr. Wizard as well. Those three are how he has described the show.
I had thought of that before I heard it because it was so evident, that concept is so much fun for a food and science nerd like many of us...
I like AB’s rougher style and personality over the last couple years.
I think Quarantine Quitchen brought out that relatable quality in him.

Yet I don't enjoy his angry, seemingly alcoholic quarantine kitchen attitude. Much prefer the informative and lighthearted good eats persona.
“There was a new wave of shows sweeping across Food Network which could annihilate existing shows like his own.” ...no, the parent company was firing all the old shows and intentionally shifting to food-themed reality shows instead of food education as the network started as.
And here we are on UA-cam discovering all these people making all kinds of great food on demand. UA-cam is a way better platform than TV. We can literally find any recipe we want and many different ways from many different people. And finding other recipes from those people.
But Bobby and Guy need 8 more shows each
There are so many networks that shift away from their original founding format, lose viewership, and then wonder what went wrong. MTV, for example. They stopped playing music videos and started playing reality TV stuff. Now nobody watches them anymore. Can’t imagine why. In fairness, they wouldn’t have survived UA-cam, anyway. Same videos, no commercials.
I really miss the old days of Food Network.

@@t.l. Never said He was not but you can't turn on food network without 14 hours of Guy. I meet him when he opened the Richmond locations in Virginia seemed decent if not a typical celebrity. But these show styles do little to educate unless you happen to get mislabeled cans during the apocalypse
Alton Brown on Good Eats was the last, best, cooking-instruction show. Everybody since is just showing food, or playing games, not showing the technique of cooking.
Oh, he had some quirks, but once he left, something good left with him.

Alton Brown and Good Eats is how I was introduced to the Food Network, I love his method of teaching while entertaining people. I prefer the shows that tell history, locations of eateries, origin's, and how to's related to food. All the competition shows have really burned me out. Unwrapped, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives are shows I prefer on the Food Network...

@@anakelly76512 I dropped my cable for Roku back in December (and I won't shell out the money for Discovery+) so I haven't watched DDD since then... kinda miss it, but I'm sure any new episodes would be "Woke" anyways!

I appreciate how he has managed to meld all of the great loves of his life into his work. The mix of music, theater, science, food, and videography is quite impressive.
I liked the way he cut through the BS and didn't "fetishize" the food. Like when you see people on here arguing about which $10k ceramic smoker is the best and then you see Alton smoking ribs in a cardboard box.
Although there was an evolution of cooking shows, Alton Brown’s stood out among the crowd.
He took us on a journey through the process and background of the ingredients. He fed our intellect and urged us to try recipes.
So cool.
Alton Brown is a goddamned legend. Good Eats is probably the best food related show ever, or at the very least in the top 3 with Bo Reservations and Bizarre Foods.

I've been wanting to try a standing rib roast. I'll check out his recipe... maybe see if he did a Good Eats about it.
the original run of GE was legendary. I remember watching it in high school and college. Reloaded and the new eps have been cool, but nothing like the original.
I have always like the way he presents his recipes and the choice of recipes themselves. Alton, its been a pleasure and educational too.
Now I'm watching him on UA-cam, if you like Alton you need to look him up on UA-cam. He drinks, he tells you what products he likes, and he even curses.🙃
Yeah, I've noticed that he seems to drink a lot actually. Somewhat concerning. Really loved Good Eats, but not so much the latest incarnation. He just seems mad all the time now.

Quarantine Quitchen was such a great idea
I stood in line for his autograph in his first cookbook in St. Louis. I never stood in line before or after that for anyone's autograph. I just enjoyed watching him that much.
I learned to properly grill steaks from Alton. That was over 20 years ago and I still use his technique to this day along with other preparations and methods from Good Eats. Thanks, Alton!
Good Eats is STILL my favorite cooking show, simply because of Alton, he make that show very informative and fun.
"Good Eats " was my favorite show on FN.
Now, it's marathons of "DDD" and "GGG" and countless games and competitions.
I miss the older FN.
FN is supposed to be about food. Now, it's like a game show network.

i grew up watching his show good eats.. i always liked it even as a kid it captivated me.... to this day im very clean and meticulous on how i do things maybe it was partly from watching his shows lol
I like Mr. Brown. I found his show "Good Eat's" to have been educational and informative!
Alton and Good Eats best cooking show period.The science and entertainment parts were very enjoyable.
I loved everything about "Good Eats". The special guests he had on. The lady in the cookware department, nutritional facts, science, and history. The best cooking show every. Love ya!
Good Eats, and watching it every day in High School is what generated my love for cooking. Alton Brown truly changed my life. Making great food for others is so rewarding.
As soon as he started doing competition shows it was all over for me.
Those competition shows were the exact opposite of Good Eats.

Arrggh! How could you NOT mention that Alton Brown was the Steadicam Operator on Spike Lee’s second feature film “School Daze”!!!! This was the film that put Spike on the map and Alton had a lot to do with it!!!! I tell my film production students this fact every time I get a chance!!

I loved Alton Brown's Good Eats TV Show. So many wonderful episodes that you can not see on youtube because they are copyright. But man ! What a wonderful show it was. I loved it.

I watched Alton for years but even before him was Two Hot Tamales. That was a great show back in the day.
I remember listening to Two Hot Tamales (and Merrill Schindler) on an NPR radio show before they went to TV..... Damn, I AM old!!
I loved watching Good Eats. It was my only favorite at the time. I still watch him but it's still taking a while to get used to his second wife being there. I much prefer him by himself.
I Love Good Eats! Always have! I know every episode by heart! I missed it when there were no more… Alton is, IMO, a genius!
AB inspired my son to learn to cook! And learn about the ingredients that he is cooking. Plus his entire demeanor is just a sarcastic naughty pleasure to watch! You never know what’s gonna come out of his mouth, and we find that refreshing especially when knives and fire are involved!
It's amazing that his video got uploaded online in 1997. Back then, even just uploading the audio was a difficult thing to do.
Good Eats in the past was my favorite the mixture of science and the use of it in cooking was a very nice way getting a better understanding of cooking
TFN has totally lost its way over the past 10 to 15 years. I started watching TFN to LEARN how to cook and pick up new ideas on how to cook. Sadly, you can no longer find that on TFN. It's now just food trucks, grocery games, and other "Show biz" type shows which essentially have nothing to do with how to cook.

While working at an elementary school in North Hollywood, I was doing some filing and came across his registration card. I learned that they kept the registration cards for every student who had ever been enrolled there. I thought that was kinda cool 😊

I have been watching Alton since the beginning. Back when Emeril was king of the channel. I love Alton's, Quarantine Kitchen on UA-cam. I hate seeing a good chef, like Tyler Florence, having to lead a bunch of yahoos in trucks, and being subjected to other famous chefs going on to mentor the OVER-THE-TOP FREAKS on Worst Cooks. UGH.
I only watch Alton Brown's reruns of Good Eats, Returned or Reloaded. I like Beat Bobby Flay, even though I know it's fake winners and losers., much like Chopped, again fake, promoting the person with the saddest story.
I do enjoy watching Guy's From the Ranch show, to watch some interesting food being cooked up.
All scripted fake winner and loser games and no real teaching how to cook...but, that's why I now come to UA-cam for inspiration.
You must have done a lot of research to understand how fake all these programs are/were. Not sure why they would go to that much trouble however.
Good Eats and The Frugal Gourmet were my favorite cooking shows.
They both used humor. They both loved the food and spoke to the public.A lot of food shows make things that look good on camera but aren't things the public will use.
I grew up with the Frugal Gourmet! To this day I cringe every time someone slides food across a cutting board with the cutting edge of a knife!
Can't believe I have watched and loved him for decades and never even knew he was a musician.

Alton is so lovely! He reminds of my brother in many ways! He was absolutely amazing in Iron Chef America. It was fun to watch him on Quarantine Kitchen at home as well! I am still in quarantine so I would love to see more! I learn a lot from watching Good Eats/Good Eats Reloaded. I enjoyed CK as well including the judges.

I saw one interview where he said the idea was a cross between Julia Childs, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Monty Python. A perfect description of Good Eats.
I still use his book I’m Just Here For the Food as a reference book. Happy chef!

I didnt grow up with tv as we got rid of any tv access early on in my life due to a serious tv addict in the family. However once the internet was born and i learned about TV i knew of Alton Brown and Good Eats years before I learned about anything Gordon Ramsey. I still love to go back and watch original good eats episodes and watch reloaded as it is available for streaming. I have learned so much about cooking and science watching this wonderful entertaining teacher on TV, he has well outdone every teacher i ever had in school. Ramsey i just watch his stuff for fun knowing i will never have the money to eat his food or make most of it.
The most surprising thing about this is how old it makes me feel.

I'm a frequent watcher of Alton and Elizabeth on his UA-cam channel show... the name now just shortened to QQ since the end of the quarantine. It's awesome... and nuts... and definitely an adults only show.🤣 I still love Good Eats though and glad to know there will be more.
I always thought of Alton Brown as The Bill Nye of The Food World, especially with my introduction to him on Good Eats.
He got me hooked on Food Network. Now Food Network sucks, it's all competition shows. I miss all of the old cooking shows . Although, Guy is kind of bomb and his personality is great
yeah, FN has lost some of it's charm over the years, sad to say... i mean i LIKE Food Competitions, like Triple G and Halloween Baking Championship, but really they need to keep their focus on Cooking, not trying to turn it into a sport.
yeah, not a fan of the reality tv/game shows FN has now. Miss the 90's - mid 2000's run of cooking shows. I was even a fan of Semi-Homemade with Aunt Alcoholic sandy

I loved Good Eats, it was scientific, funny, and Good Eats. Alton didn't just show you how to cook but what the ingredients are and how they interact with each other in a chemical way. I learned a lot of things about the food I ate and things I never or seldom ate.

I raised my kids on Good Eats, bought the cookbooks and have the framed poster in our kitchen. It's easy to get confused or overwhelmed by culinary situations but we just refer to the poster and ask, "What would Alton do?" We've had years of fun!!

I got into food network because of Alton Brown. My dad was a Food Network fanatic and when I watched it with him once, it caught my appeal. Because it reminded me of Bill Nye.

Very likable and have been following him since the beginning. Seems a good dude.
I've certainly watched my share of competition food shows in the past but now consider all of them a waste of time because they provide little; if any, learning value. I like shows that teach me something, a meal I can make, an ingredient to try, a cooking tip. Good eats is a prime example of the best, the show teaches you things you can use and is entertaining as well.
I always was a fan of Brown, and Good Eats. Great content and style.
Fun fact: the first two episodes were first shown on the Chicago PBS station WTTW. I remember watching those episodes

I love Good Eats, and I have learned a lot from it. I also loved him on Next Food Network Star because he brought in the fun. quirky and wacky people that make the shows I like to watch. The Other Hosts tended to bring in less interesting people. I love that he brings humor into the shows, because a lot of them are rather dull in comparison.
Alton Brown probably has taught me about 70% of my food knowledge. Of course... The rest can be attributed to Mom, Emeril Lagasse , and some other cooking shows. Everything that I make for my family is a hit.
As of 1/20/2023.... I just watched an AB live video a couple of days ago. He hadn't done that in a while. He seemed conflicted on what he wanted to do; sign to a streaming service or just do "Him".
Anyway.... Good Eats has been the most influential show ever. Personally.... I really want to see more of Alton.
I loved watching GE and when it was released on to purchase- it was always oos onsite. The following reviews on the vhs/dvd were 2-3/5. I really wish they would clean it up and release it again. I would buy it!

I feel like I just listened to someone's book report...
The only competitions I like are Halloween Wars, Halloween Baking Championship, Spring Baking Championship and Holiday Wars.
That's because they only show up once a year.
I love his work, and cannot wait to see what's next.
Alton is a national treasure. That is if you eat food.
Alton brown is the reason why I enjoy cooking. I enjoyed hearing why a dear is desirable on meat, why yeast acts the way it does, why salt is so essential in recipes, etc
I grew up with altons shows and he will forever, at least to me, be the epitome of the food network food show.

Did Good Eats ever used to be on PBS before it was on Food Network? I could swear I remember seeing a very old episode on PBS where he was in Mexico and talking about which drinks are safe to get and which ones aren't. Did he ever do an episode in Mexico?

I met Alton Brown once, on his book tour for Good Eats The Later Years. Got his autograph. I stand 6' in my bare feet and he was head and shoulders taller than me. Couldn't have been a nicer guy.

In the beginning he was a great educator and entertainer. This all changed to arrogance as the years went by. I keep the remote close when he pops up.
