If you complete 27 or less fates and leave the ship, you get a letter that basically says "You were so bad at cataloguing this that Doctor Evans just fucking died. We just thought you should know."
Spoiler for the insurance claim bit of the game: Why was Jane Bird fined for abandoning the ship and crew? She was a passenger, the ship was in no way her problem. What was she supposed to do, strangle the kraken with her bare hands for funsies?
2:26:15 hey, yeah, combowinter in chat brings up a good point! If Dr. Evans had the magic death watch the whole time and knew just how it worked, why didn't he use it to solve The Murder in The Murder? Coulda averted a good couple chapters worth of tradegy.
Probably a combination of politics, worrying that the captain wouldn't believe him, and himself believing that Hok-Seng Lau had actually done it. It's been a while since I played the game so I don't remember how heavily this is implied in the story but, Hok-Seng Lau confesses to the crime, but he doesn't speak English, so he must have done so through an interpreter. At least one of the Chinese Topmen is part of Second Officer Nichols' inner circle, so it's quite possible he got the interpreter to be that one, and he then proceeded to just lie about the "self confession". If Henry Evans trusted the self confession, as the captain did, he wouldn't need to investigate himself, and seeing as it's a supernatural watch in an event prior to the discovery of the supernatural, it might raise some eyebrows.
I think the scene you glossed over the most was doom 2. Spratts horrible death aside, it lets you confirm third mates steward and more importantly, see the hammocks again to check who is still alive. Among other things, it lets you confirm one Chinese without doing the shoes puzzle.
1:19:55 Part of how I solved this game is that, since the game doesn't punish you for incorrect guesses, if I wasn't sure on someone but had a guess, I'd just leave the name in. If I happened to be right, they'd get confirmed, and if they didn't get confirmed when the three fates typeset thing happens, I'd know that my guess was wrong and to put something else

Nicholas Boterill is a one star deduction because in the scene immediately after his death, someone says "It's already killed Nick!"
the fact that attempted mutiny has a greater fine than murder really sells the time period
The other clue for the purser is, he locks himself in the pursers office during crab attack. You can see him through the hole in the wall.
Yeah, the room names on the map is a neat way to deduce identities.

We all know she could've if she just put in the effort
If this happened on a boat today they would owe *her* money.
And because suicide was illegal at the time, the captain got fined for his own murder.
That's sexism for ya
I think she got fined for shooting the russian, even though it was technically self defense
Adjusting for inflation, the total insurance claim is for roughly 4.1 million pounds.

The culprit was some foreign barbarian who didn't even speak English, and the Chinese guys on the crew said he'd confessed. Why double check?

They did leave the port before the first death because nr 60 shows up in a sketch. They must have had a stop to pick up extra supplies.
