- It's slim pickings for morels around my house due to a lack of rain. So I'm trying a morel slurry to kick start morel mycelium to start growing in an area that I choose. These are the steps that I've taken, of course we won't know if it worked until next spring.

Always remember this when making a slurry pay attention to the trees around you because the mycelium will not adapt from One Tree spaces to the other that means if you have found them under that say for example a maple tree it will not work under a.Elm Heads up on That
I spray mine on its works great. We get over 1000 pounds of Morels and others every year. We do have a large area we grow them in. Am a farmer so I drive to PA to load my tractor trailers up with used Mushroom fertilizer or mulch. They grow a phenomenal mushroom. Great job.

Thanks Matthew I used your method with the first dozen or so black morels and Gray morels I found this season.. I'm in Maryland and they seem to like the tulip poplar trees around here I'm going to separate the slurry into about 10 buckets of pond Water and hopefully next year I'll have my secret spot
Good luck on it. I literally just made another slurry 10 minutes ago. Daughter and I loaded up on Morels on a hunt today. So far nothing has come up on my morel bed, but I'm still hopeful. Maybe after a good rain.
They say it may take up to 2-3yrs to see any yeild.... I believe I saw a slurry that used something besides bread flour but I can't find the recipe now
Rake up that leaf litter when it's fresh and a little of the soil and pasteurize it. Let it cool, and add your slurry/culture to that mix and let it incubate for a month or more.
If you've got a good culture it should have a better chance to build up sclerotia without a bunch of competitors. My results so far show that the morel mycelium can be fairly weak until it get's well established, and even then it's got a number of things that will consume it.

Cedar cedar and a few other conifers make the ground. Acidic. So the yellow and gray morrell's liked to grow

You're welcome and thanks. Good news is the morels popped out of the ground late this spring and I ended up with plenty for family and friends.
@cricket only I'm watching it nearly daily and also the regular spots that I find them. Last year I didn't find my first one until April 17. When I do have an answer I'll go ahead and film it and slide it onto UA-cam earlier than usual. My videos are normally a month behind, but I'll do a "current update".

The update is out and I show the patch..... of dang dirt. Not a single mushroom, but we can't win them all and I'm not done. Trying it again with a little twist.

The water from your hose I’m assuming is coming from your house which is chlorinated water. This doesn’t affect all the effort making your slurry?
City folk have chlorinated water. When you live out in the country, as I do, most people have water wells. My water for the house is pulled up from 70 feet underground and my well for my pond pulls from a well that is 110 feet underground. Some of the cleanest best drinking water that you will taste. Zero chemicals.

You do not have to cut morel mushrooms off if you pull the whole thing out of the ground it actually makes the mycelium Network stronger it Branches off in two different directions another word of wisdom just letting you know this because my neighbor is a mycologist
Yes, I'm aware. I use a knife, not for the purpose of being gentle on the mycelium, but rather for all the "know it all people" blowing up my comments for pulling the mushroom out of the ground. The mycelium gets absolutely butchered up from the local wild hog population I have out here and the mushrooms continue to come back every year. The knife does however, give me less to clean once I have them back at the house. I've lived out here since 2008 and still harvesting mushrooms.
Mathew, I'm curious why you chose to spread the spores on the back side of your barn, instead of spreading them under a cedar tree? I look forward to seeing your results in the spring!
Good question and for a couple of reasons. One was because I saw a video were a man had them growing all around a junky yard. Literally growing under a shed, behind sheets of plywood and other objects. Second reason is, I expect to find them under cedar trees and I wanted to see if my efforts were working or not, so I picked a place that is shaded and a spot that I've never found a Morel. Otherwise I would have went straight to one of my larger cedar trees on the property.
@@mathewdavis-adventuresandd6643 Oddly enough, after watching your video, youtube suggested another video of a guy trying to grow morels, and he's just thirty miles from me, in the foothills near Denver. He's in the experimental stage too, so I look forward to seeing the results you both achieve this spring and summer!

So, 12 months has passed Matt. How are you getting on with your Morel bed mate?
I see a few problems here. Try this and you will see results. Collect your morels in a bucket. Then add water when done. Shake the morels off when take out of bucket. Nothing but water in bucket. Then get a sprayer. Put the spore filled water in the sprayer. Go to where the morels are on your land. Empty the sprayer there. Nothing more to do but wait a year or 2.
This is how nature does it. No slurry or anything added. Not in a cultivated area. Not in a sunny spot. Think as if nature is doing it. You just over thinking some. Spores dont get buried in nature. The wind does the work. You will not be able to that me. Been doing this for over 50 years now. Taught in 60s by my grandfather. I will more then likely be ashes in 2 years. Gl and pass on the knowledge I have told you...
What about results?
I dont know yet. I've been on a sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico for the past week and a half. I did hear that morels are being found in my area though. I'm excited to get home and look.
