Avey Tare stumbled out of the back room of the studio, DMT-filled vape pen in hand. "Noah," he coughed, "I just talked to the Magnum Fucker. He gave me 57 thumbs down and told me how to fix Painting With." Panda Bear looked up from his broken Zune. "What did he say?'" "He only said one word." Avey leaned in and whispered. "... Deakin."
+Devan Wiech They didn't cover Dylan, but rather Deakin and Geologist remixed his song "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right". It has Dylan's original vocals, but the music is different. It was a birthday tribute.
animal collective is consistently good. say what you want about painting with, I thought it was fucking great. this newer stuff is equally fucking great. feels and MPP are legendary. I love practically all of their stuff.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED "Centipede Hz", but didn't like "Painting With". I do love at least half the new EP, though, and realize they still have surprises up their sleeve. Really it was Deakin's album that impressed me in 2016, and I can't wait for the next Animal Collective era already where hopefully they will all be working together again.
Listening to these guys since the Spirits they come era. They are a band that I actually unconditionally love. They have changed and grown so much. each album is like a little update on what's going on in their lives and at first Painting with sounds I Iike another attempt at pop accessibility like Merry Weather but there is always so much more with these guys.
I think it's still soul/r&b, or at least is made up of elements of those traditions, much like most of, if not all of, the tracks on Down There. All of their music from Feels onward has elements of soul and R&B. Have you heard the original version of Purple Bottle? it's great
This is the best AnCO song I've heard in years. these guys shaped my creative life. I owe them so much gratitude, and it's amazing they're still putting out their souls for us
Oh shit, The Painters just stepped up it's game. I'm seeing another album-ep pair made in heaven, one that we haven't seen similar since Fall Be Kind with MPP. I'm so so excited!!
Rico Martinez I agree that the majority of the song is of a strawberry jam vibe. But it was the first 10 seconds of those synthesizers at the beginning that really made me think of that album. it probably just reminds me of certain synth sounds during alvin row to be honest
Damn! This makes me fall in love with Alternative/Indie Music all over again! I LOVE THIS TRACK. I had the grand pleasure of meeting Martha Reeves in the 1990's. She was dressed in black with silver beading, and she looked stunning. Then I discovered she was gracious, very kind, quite thoughtful and truly a Lady. I hope she's heard this new treatment of Jimmy Mack, originally recorded in 1966 on Motown Records, "The Sound Of Young America" as the 45 RPM label stated, sung by the incomparable Martha & The Vandellas! Animal Collective have given this classic a new sense of JOY!
AMAZING FREEKIN COVER.......but what sells it for me , the combination of the "flute-y" break , (at about 2:09), the vocal "Cmon Jimmy" and then the "Whooo" -- the genuine JOY in his voice. The vocal arc feels sad and desperate in the beginning then turns to JOY .... its like the Cherry on Top. A friend of mine recommended this , and I am glad he did. Yeeow! Truly Inspired, and I'm sharing it( to all my contacts)
Everyone shitting on their Painting With album needs to see them live. Although on surface it seems subpar, to actually perform it is fucking mesmerizing.
This music helps my soul, the music they put out always speaks to me. Kinda bonkers and this are simply too good. We'll done gentlemen. Never cease to amaze me.
I remember when I first heard this song, March 8,2016, and I didn't know what it was. Then I get the name listen to the og version and love both. Invited crush to the concert in September 21, 2016. She can't show. This song comes up and Avey is screaming about turning to a "Jimmy" next to you. Cries and dances the night away to summertime clothes.
yeah these past two songs feel a bit more realized than painting with. painting with was like they found new toys to play with. this ep will (hopefully) be them understanding how to better use them
Painting With is an awesome AnCo pop album. Should've could've would've -check out their PW interviews to understand the album's intention better. This is a fun track btw
I cannot wait to hear goalkeeper and peacemaker!!! Are they good, those who have heard the leak??? I like bonkers and jimmy. I think in two years time people will come around on Painting With, just like they seem to have done with Centipede Hz (granted not everyone is sold on CHz still, but I personally think it's great and I think PW is great too). AC needed to make those albums imo. I've been a fan since Feels came out, and PW isn't probably in my top 2 releases from AC, but I paradoxically have probably listened to it more in a shorter amount of time than any other AC LP, maybe because they're shorter "in and out" songs. It's just a fun album! The melodies and synth textures make the album an auditory kaleidoscopic roller coaster and I love it--hocketing, buzzy bass, and all!
The mixing on this and Kinda Bonkers seems way more pleasant than Painting With (and also Slasher House), keen to hear the other two tracks on the EP now!
To me this cover sounds almost like there is a Suicide influence although very subtle, especially the ad libs towards the end and when Avey talks to/screams at the audience when performing this live. I could be wrong of course. I know they're fans of Suicide
This is the 3rd comment im writing on this. The other two I deleted because they just didnt manage to clearly state how fucking incredible i find this.
When your favorite band of all time does an incredible cover of one of your favorite motown songs/groups... wow, there's just no words to explain this feeling. ANIMAL IS LOVE! ANIMAL IS LIFE!
Abbey V. I thought Painting With had some redeemable songs, like Floridada, Lying In The Grass, and Bagels In Kiev. Painting with was actually the first album I heard by them, so it was my impression and I found it to be pretty nice. After listening to every other album, yeah, I can see why so many people weren't fans of it. This song is pretty nice, and I understand it's a cover, but I think that if they're making an EP or straight up releasing another album, they need to have songs that don't deviate too much and all have something in common with one another, specifically with Kinda Bonkers, because I thought that was way better than Gnip Gnop/Hounds of Bairro
yeah i think painting with was the first full album i heard too. i'm a fan of most of their work but i can see where some people think their most recent album fell short
Honestly I think Gnip Gnop should've been on PW. It's wayy better than, say, Natural Selection or Summing the Wretch. PW is a great album too and has some amazing songs (Vertical, FloriDada, Golden Gal, On Delay), but this just sounds more... complete I guess? Like you said, sounds more like they knew what they were doing. I hope they get Deak back for the next LP and they make a masterpiece again.
I'm conflicted by your statement. I too believe Gnip Gnop should have been on Painting With. It is now one of my favourite Animal Collective Songs. On the other hand, Natural Selection was my favourite song on Painting With, and yet another top AC song. I should point out, having seen them 5 times this tour, my affection for these songs are heavily biased by their live renditions. I personally believe that Gnip Gnop should live where Bagels in Kiev went. It would have been a great start to side two of the record.
Avey Tare stumbled out of the back room of the studio, DMT-filled vape pen in hand. "Noah," he coughed, "I just talked to the Magnum Fucker. He gave me 57 thumbs down and told me how to fix Painting With."
Panda Bear looked up from his broken Zune. "What did he say?'"

timeparadox888 😂 I'm fucking dying hahaha!!
FUCMK
I wonder if the guys read comments on their videos. if yes then holy shit I have to know if they laughed at this.
You can't even fathom how done I am.
try me
Animal Collective covering a 60's Motown Song? I can dig this.
Aye, works better than that Bob Dylan cover (imho)
Mike Denby What Dylan song did they cover??
+Devan Wiech They didn't cover Dylan, but rather Deakin and Geologist remixed his song "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right". It has Dylan's original vocals, but the music is different. It was a birthday tribute.
Ahh thanks!
As with almost all Animal Collective tracks, I must hear this 6 more times before finding out I like it.
the painting with cycle was a little disappointing, but this one rips!!
Who listens to a song they don't like six times?
haha. true dat. well. maybe with about HALF their tracks. the other half I wouldn't bother. seriously interesting cover tho.
The songs you grow to lover never stick at first some of my favorite songs of all time I didn't like at first.
they will never loose the spark they've always had
animal collective is consistently good. say what you want about painting with, I thought it was fucking great. this newer stuff is equally fucking great. feels and MPP are legendary. I love practically all of their stuff.
WolfWave狼波 Totally agree. It feels like 90% of anco fans hate everything from centipede onwards. I don't get it.
sung tongs stays overlooked these days
Brett Beagle centipede hz is my fave
I LOVED LOVED LOVED "Centipede Hz", but didn't like "Painting With". I do love at least half the new EP, though, and realize they still have surprises up their sleeve. Really it was Deakin's album that impressed me in 2016, and I can't wait for the next Animal Collective era already where hopefully they will all be working together again.
cus they want people to know theyve been a fan since the beginning
I FEEEL REAAAALY GOOOD BEEEING HERE WIIIITH YOU JIIMMAAAAAAY
im disappointed they left out aveys monologue tbh
gogogagagugu2134 naah it makes the live version a lot more special
gogogagagugu2134 You're right! it makes the song so much better and in context!
mraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I NEED YOUR LOVIN’, JIMMY!!!!!!!!!
This song is so full of life.
They really went and did it again, the God damnned madmen.
Wuzzy abdolute mad lads
these boys are unstoppable
Great meme m8
crazy boys indeed
Listening to these guys since the Spirits they come era. They are a band that I actually unconditionally love. First listen: not bad. (5 minutes later) why is this in my head? Gotta listen to this again Second Listen: JAM OF A LIFETIME
same here
For those that don't know, this is a Martha and the Vandella's song.
jsv that some people wouldn't know that inherently is sad
I think it's still soul/r&b, or at least is made up of elements of those traditions, much like most of, if not all of, the tracks on Down There. All of their music from Feels onward has elements of soul and R&B. Have you heard the original version of Purple Bottle? it's great
THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
This is the best AnCO song I've heard in years. these guys shaped my creative life. I owe them so much gratitude, and it's amazing they're still putting out their souls for us
That was already the best thing live.
Oh shit, The Painters just stepped up it's game. I'm seeing another album-ep pair made in heaven, one that we haven't seen similar since Fall Be Kind with MPP. I'm so so excited!!
mrnoah Do you mean PW is a great album? Because it's not even near
dunno man, painting with was kinda disappointing, but this ep is definitely up there with fall be kind.
@misael perez All you guys saying Painting With isn't a great album, I say you're all very wrong. ;)
Painting with is really good, just kinda short
Misael Perez I was talking about an EP being better than an album. Painting With isn't great.
that intro has a vibe from spirit theyve gone
Chnoubis felt more like strawberry jam and water curse.
my ears don't hurt so no
Steven Diaz definitely had that strawberry jam water curses feeling when the song kicked in
Rico Martinez I agree that the majority of the song is of a strawberry jam vibe. But it was the first 10 seconds of those synthesizers at the beginning that really made me think of that album. it probably just reminds me of certain synth sounds during alvin row to be honest
Painting with is a masterpiece and this EP is a good follow up
This is pure beauty
these guys can cover almost any song and make it great
Damn! This makes me fall in love with Alternative/Indie Music all over again! I LOVE THIS TRACK.
I had the grand pleasure of meeting Martha Reeves in the 1990's. She was dressed in black with silver beading, and she looked stunning. Animal Collective have given this classic a new sense of JOY!
I'm already ready for the next Animal Collective album. Come back home, Deakin!
Supposedly there’s going to be one this year.
The Deak has yet to peak.
Yeeow! Love the variety of songs in this EP.
Beautiful.. you guys are 100% back thank you!
What a great cover!

This song is great! Already played it 13 times on a loop, it has a great sort of feeling to it that I can't get enough of!
my new favorite song from animal collective to obsess over this year.
I'm glad to see this on the EP, because they killed it when they played it at the show I went to!
Kinda Bonkers and this is what Painting With should've been. Amazing!
yeah these past two songs feel a bit more realized than painting with. painting with was like they found new toys to play with. this ep will (hopefully) be them understanding how to better use them
Abbey V. They started playing this live at the very start of the Painting With tour last year in January
i've never seen them live so didn't know
Painting With is an awesome AnCo pop album. Should've could've would've -check out their PW interviews to understand the album's intention better. This is a fun track btw
smh
OH MY GOOD LORD THE GOOSEBUMPS WHAT HAVE THESE MUSICAL GENIUSES DONE TO MY BRAIN
Holy shit, they did a Motown soul cover!! I'm loving this.
So unexpected aggghh I can already tell I'm gonna love this EP
Loving this track!!
qwerty2qwerto stop
shitposts on the sub pls thx
I would have been fine if we got this EP years after Fall Be Kind and skipped the 2 recent LPs.
I feel really lucky to have the new EP drop now because I just finally heard painting with yesterday for the first time.
I cannot wait to hear goalkeeper and peacemaker!!! Are they good, those who have heard the leak??? I like bonkers and jimmy. facevillain I haven't heard about a leak thus far..?
I absolutely love you guys
Sooo good, love it
I love Jeremy's drumming on this
The Beach Boys vibe is strong with this song. It would be very cool if Animal Collective covered The Beach Boys someday.
i feel like that'd be kinda like them chasing their own tail, haha
The sound at 2:07 is heaven
The mixing on this and Kinda Bonkers seems way more pleasant than Painting With (and also Slasher House), keen to hear the other two tracks on the EP now!
Its 9:35am and I've played this seven times already. Its gonna be a great day.
Yeah. I feel this was a good evolution from Centipede Hz. Why did they not sound like this in Painting With?
Amazing! so fantastic Grandios amazing.
I knew I heard a jimmy song when I saw em live! THIS IS AWESOME! :D
Goosebumps 😍😍
i like this song.
thanks ben
you're welcome bree

Painting With was my summer album of 2016, hope they put out a new one for this summer!!!!!!!!!
I like this.
the backround vocal harmonics are insane
funny brilliant inventive..class as always animal c..
PLEASE KEEP UPLOADING! ♡
To me this cover sounds almost like there is a Suicide influence although very subtle, especially the ad libs towards the end and when Avey talks to/screams at the audience when performing this live. I could be wrong of course. I know they're fans of Suicide
facevillain I’m hoping/assuming suicide is a band, lol
ImBartSmith Suicide is a band.
great cover
Thank you anco.
These new songs from the EP are like a more loose sounding PW, love it all
JIMMY OH JIMMAH

Reminds me of the classic sonic the hedgehog video games.
This is the 3rd comment im writing on this. The other two I deleted because they just didnt manage to clearly state how fucking incredible i find this.
Major props to Martha & The Vandellas! I love AC, but what it took for a black women's trio in 60's America to be successful is the real trip.
JIMAAAAAYYYY
Such a good cover song

When your favorite band of all time does an incredible cover of one of your favorite motown songs/groups... wow, there's just no words to explain this feeling. ANIMAL IS LOVE! ANIMAL IS LIFE!
Am I the only one to think its kinda feel like a Wham! song ? It's not a critic, I love Wham!
hell yeah boiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
I heard the original of this (for the first time) in Co-Op a few months back! Needless to say the Animal Collection rendition kicks its bottom
Even better than the last!!
ah, painting with the painters..
TEEMMY!!!
i'm in the minority that liked painting with, but these past two songs sound more like they know what they're doing

my fucking head exploded when i realized this was a cover
There's something Wes Anderson-like about this. I like it a lot.
That "WOO!" around 2:05 reminds me of the WOO!s from Peacebone
i came
that introduction got me a little off-guard lmao
is jimmy mack jimmy raven's grandpa?
CGPig no it's a Vietnam war song, I think
jimmy johns
I feel like they're sampling the original somehow but I'm not really sure.
Finally I can make sense out of my name
ANCO ARE BACK
come on Jimmy...
