- Moderat's music video for "Bad Kingdom" - directed and illustrated by Pfadfinderei.
Perhaps the secret of Modeselektor's and Apparat's collaboration lies in the fact that they never even tried to get close to one another. Modeselektors thundering bass rumbles in the cellar, Apparats sensitive and subtle melodies float high in the eaves. The fact that what one assumes to be incompatible actually communicates, is what makes Moderat so unique. Moderat is not just a studio project: with a set of visuals created for these concerts by Pfadfinderei, they toured all five continents and will do again immediately after the release of the new album.

Their videos are polished and their mastery of their apparats and mode selektions are better than Nigel Godrich’s. Seeing them live really makes it clear that they’re on another level. Another plane. It left me speechless. My cheeks were jiggling from the bass. I could only laugh in awe.
If you are wondering if there is any explicit meaning to the animation, they (the animators) said this in an interview:
We wanted to draw an image of a man who wants to escape from the system of military and injustice he was born into. He turns towards literature, aesthetics and dandyism in the early ’60s and gets involved in the same mechanisms of cruelty he once wanted to escape from.
Starting with high ambitions and getting stuck in the power structure that is ruling most of [today’s] world is the main story behind it.

Entwickelt sich mehr und mehr zu meinem absoluten Lieblings-Lied. Und das ist eine wohl überlegte und langfristige Aussage. Ich kenne wenige Stücke, die emotional eine zumindest ähnliche Wirkung bei mir auslösen.

The meaning of "Moderat" is in german a status and means moderat or neutral

I'm 70 years old, I can't understand this. But I'm sure you youngsters have a blast listening to it.
The story is set against the backdrop of South Africa during Apartheid in the 1960s. The protagonist was born into a wealthy family and has big ideas for how to change the world for the better. But once he gets into power, he finds that power corrupts. He starts making shady deals with politicians, gets involved with criminal elements, etc. Eventually it all falls apart like a house of cards.

Fucking chills... I knew of guys like Apparat and Max Richter before Dark but that show has one of the best soundtracks of all time imo, this is just art.
This song is timeless.
Everything is perfect, from the pure bass to the aerial lyrics and the hard hitting but minimalistic drums… this is what I wanted!

hoon4tw My girlfriend introduced me to them when we went to seen them live in a defunct cast iron gasometer. I'm so glad I went with her as it was the best live performance I've heard. The sound of the venue was just great.
Got here because of a Polish rap duo called "Dwa Sławy" - in one of their interviews, they cited a performance of this song as the best live gig they've seen.

This is literally an amalgamation of a couple clichés. Don't get me wrong, the style of the video is great, but you already know exactly the kind of story it tells because it's worn out
