As a fashion history nerd the off-brand Europe setting drives me crazy. The women's dresses range anywhere from the 1400s to 1890s to modern prom dress. The men are wearing modern suits, and occasionally 1700s military uniforms. And everyone is wearing their hair down in loose beach waves like it's 2014. I know you can't expect a Korean comic artist to be an expert on European fashion history, but it would be so cool if there were a few details that made the setting feel more believable. For example, a woman would never be seen in public with her hair down or without gloves, and putting her in that situation would show vulnerability.
@@maria.skorik Yeah. I usually set my stories in fantasy worlds, but when I have a real world set I do tons of research beforehand. Especially if it's historical. It bugs me the same way!
@@maria.skorik I had to research the outfits and hairstyles in the 1800’s for my story about vampires, a Frankenstein, and humans, which I’m gonna make into a manga when I’m older. Only a few characters break the rules, but it’s fiction after all. Like Black Butler, pretty sure nobody would have hair like Sebastian and Grell.
If I had a nickel for every webtoon I read about a young orphan girl adopted into a noble family to replace their dead daughter only to be harassed and abused by her new family until they eventually kill her resulting in her regressing to the midpoint in her relationship with that family and allowing her to change the future while also uncovering her magical abilities and pursuing a dark haired love interest, I'd have two nickels. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but I need you to understand that I have seen that exact plotline used twice and variations from it used dozens of times and I've read all of them because I have a crippling shoujo manga addiction.
My biggest pet peeve in Webtoons are 3D backgrounds that are clearly from those CSP assets 😭 I UNDERSTAND why artists use them (time constraints and details) but so many times they don’t blend well with the art aaaa
RIIIIIGHT!? I hate noticing those! I started seeing them in Lore Olympus even recently, and my first thought was, "The creators of this one are really hitting burnout aren't they?" It made me so sad to see it.
@@MewGirlZ Yes what do y'all expect they don't get paid much on those platforms if you want more detailed backgrounds than less detail to characters or less stories
@@DreamiMushoI think its less about the usage of them at all rather than an unfitting style at most times. If the 3d models blend good with the art it doesnt take away. But I also dropped good comics because that mix justs didnt work out for me
Webtoon is like a win lose situation. You get to find these absolute masterpieces of comics and then the next time you find those traumatizing back of the alley comics that straight up should not exist.
!*Mild TW: CSA*! I remember I was reading this one Webtoon because I was interested in the world building and felt like I could tolerate the ab*se dipiction, as it was usually off screen. Well, there was one panel where the artist drew the protag (a school-aged boy) being SA'd by the antag (his step-father). The problem was, it was potrayed, in my opinion, too similarly to consentual h*ntai or p*rn. I confronted the artist who basically just said they didn't think it was portayed that way, and instead of fixing the problematic panel, I just unfollowed. If someone who has been affected by SA says your art is disrespecting SA, maybe just change it.
@@inacatt what’s the name of the WEBTOON? I want to avoid it. Also, just a warning, there is this story that follows a very toxic, abusive, relationship with r*** on tapas called ‘The Elegant Sea of Savagery’. It’s not really the story that’s the problem, the story portrays it as awful, it’s the comments and fans who blame the victim and glorify the abusers actions
I will never forgive WebToon for putting daily passes on the completed webtoons because back in 2017-18 my favorite pass time was binging stories and noW YOU'RE TELLING ME I CAN'T EVEN BINGE ORANGE MARMALADE ???!!! this is madness !!! nowadays I stick to finding good canvas stories lmao 💀
True, i miss some completed webtoons that i have read and want to reread it again, but i changed my mind since i remember i have to deal with daily passes😭
This is actually one of my favorites!! They do such a good job of conveying the emotions and thoughts of characters without constantly outright stating it in thought bubbles and such
I imagine that kind of thing stems from manga traditionally being made physically and using screentones instead of drawing each skirt, tie, and pair of pants with a plaid pattern. I know EXACTLY what you mean though
Can you please include one with the girl-on-girl hate?? I’ve seen so many where it’s like “my stepsister stole my fiancé” or “my boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend” and I really want someone to bring that to light
@@bloodbadger5332 kinda yeah but i think its more about the girls hating girls aspect , since a lot of stories have girls hating girls but no cheating
Nothing turned me away faster from a webcomic than watching the sister gloat about how much they hated the protagonist without giving any clear indication as to WHY she hated her in the first place. Do these characters just live and breathe hate as the story demands it? Edit: They probably don’t show the reasons because it’s supposed to be a part of the intrigue. However, the only mystery I’m interested in is how the fuck these stories hit the popular page in the first place.
“This man has murdered people, but why do I only see his sad face?” is a sentence that just made me stop suspending my disbelief and drop the story entirely
@Amethyst.i depends if everyone is also evil. However if it's a stories where heroes and villains and the concept of morality legitimately exists in the same world like... real life, then yes its a huge problem. But if it's about just two evil forces like a gang war between Mafias, then I am not so bothered by it.

I feel like in a lot of webcomics I have read recently, the events in the story seems to go by really fast and it kind of feels like I am reading a summary of the story (kind of like a bullet point list of the events of a story) rather than experiencing it.
Oh yeah! I’ve started reading a few that feel that way, and it’s really disappointing because I’m there like “wait wait go back I want to know more! Why are they kissing already?!”
yeah this is actually such a problem in writing a very lore filled, story filled universe into a simple comic. i dont know where to start with actually telling the story, or how to make it so that it's not just a summary or a super small part of the universe.
@@father270 It definitely takes practice, that's for sure. Patience and proper pacing are important as well. I'll call it the three Ps lol But it is possible. Comics can have as much lore and potential as a novel, you just need to do it right
It sounds like the series you're reading have either a problem with showing, not telling problem OR they're poorly adapted from a novel or other source material. I've read waaay too many webtoons where everything is explained in the novel and they just assume everyone reading the webtoon read the novel it's based on.
I actually liked the "dead protagonist reborn again" trope in "marry my husband", simply because it's not isekai, it's a slice of life comic of a woman relieving her life and trying to make the most of it... By getting revenge on her backstabbing friend by making her marry her abusive husband...
@@williammiller6330its so much better then how op described, the backstabbing best friend was cheating with her horrible husband, it makes more sense and satusfying when u see the backstory and actual comic
As for the "scroll comic" issue i definitely agree, but i really love when there are webcomics that use this to their advantage, kinda like one o read a while back called "Don't Click" which uses the white space to exemplify a sense of quiet and loneliness, which is super important to the plot.
I can see where it can get annoying; But I think the scrolling panel works best for like you said. For more short story style comics; But that is just me. I try to read a bunch of different ones. I think the reason why a lot of the webcomics do the scrolling has to do with the formatting or downloading? I just know from experience with some comics that don't do the whole scroll comic and give big pic scenes. They can be difficult even more so if you don't lock your screen to see the page.
I was gonna say the same thing, but recommend Nevermore! It really uses its medium to its advantage. I’d love Evernote as a book (just cause I prefer physical copies of these things), but if that happened they’d definitely have to rearrange and/or redraw panels to make it work just as well in that layout.
Yooooo! A Don't Click fan! It's not technically over, but the author has been having a lot of irl issues that's preventing them from finishing which is an absolute shame, but the author's health should always come first
As someone who predominantly reads comics & novels on my phone, I absolutely love the vertical scroll format! Especially when it's used well. Since it forces you to have to go panel by panel rather than page by page, there's no way to accidentally look ahead, so I think it makes big reveals/surprises/jump scares so much more impactful. The scrolling format also allows creators to have fun with top-down perspective changes. Honestly, I prefer vertical scroll comics over traditional.
i think it depends i mean i do read manga so i could be biased a bit but i love both of them. Manga panels allow for a lot more creativity with how it is laid out but when the scrolling panels get creative you KNOW it’s gonna be good.
that is so true I have a big problem of accidentally spoiling myself. Especially because i read both comics and manga and that makes it so that I often get confused on which way I am supposed to read it lmaooo
I actually read a villainess isekai that I absolutely LOVED. The main character was pretty much a normal person and the story was kinda her realizing that most of the love interests for the heroine are either creepy, toxic or both. And the best part was she forced the male leads to take accountability for their behavior and SHE DOESN'T FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM but instead finds her own love interest that wasnt even a part of the 'original plot'. I really liked it since it was pretty funny, interesting and sweet. Its called Beware the Villainess and its so good.

As a Korean it is so hard to find good Korean webtoons when one half is 'reborn as the villainess and I made the toxic bad boy fall for me' and the other half is 'SSSSSS level sorcerer in a game/simulation world fighting monsters in dungeons'. I know that there are some really good webtoons of those genres out there but it just feels way too generic. My personal favorites are Tomorrow(내일), Blood of the Butterfly(피와 나비), Surviving Romance(살아남은 로맨스), and 오른눈이 보는 세계 and 어글리후드 but I don't think those have English translations.

As a korean who read webtoons for 10+ years now most of this really has to do with the fundamental 'weekly' system. The artists are expected to draw 50-80 colored panels every week. It's known that they are always overworked even if it's a team of artists and it leads to boring compositions, angles and similar story arcs imo. Also, webtoons used to be completely free but now it's more normalised to pay for the episodes, which I respect. Ads were not enough to give artists salary. And as a comment to people complaining about paying at all, let's not go there... There are numerous resources, not only the artist but editors, platforms etc and if u somehow can read it free at least once that's already a big deal.
Yeah, to be honest, I don't see paying for a chapter each as a huge issue. As far as I know, it's no different to paying for a volume of a manga/manwah, or an episode of anime. Plus, paying $10-$20 is more rewarding than paying $50-$100 for an illustration, and it's a more stable and consistent income for the artist as well.
personally i don't mind the wait, i like having something to look forward to, if i'm feeling extra impatient i might farm free coins for an extra fast pass chapter, but otherwise i can be patient. the thing i do hate is the FUCKING DAILY PASS. pisses me off, especially when it's a long comic that keeps updating so you never catch up, and if you miss a day you're even more behind, and there's literally no way to read more without paying. hooky is the only one that i don't mind having daily pass on, since you can read up to 5 chapters a day and the comic's already finished so there's no need to catch up.
Well said. When I found a WEBTOON I like and it’s locked behind a paywall I go search for it on knock off sites cause as a minor I can’t work and I refuse to be paying for pixels. Never have I complained about the paywall of about translators not updating on knock off sites cause well, I’m not exactly doing something that entitles me to complain
the thing about more comics being meant for scrolling: ive seen some truly amazing action scenes that are so streamlined they feel animated. scenes where a character enters a new city or world are elongated with interesting perspectives that feel overwhelming, which is exactly how it should. i havent seen the example you mentioned nearly as often, and the only situations that i have are for “normal” moments where it doesnt need to be interesting.
and for the last one, while i agree that theyre frustrating, the model is designed for the weekly update system. its definitely an issue if you’re reading a finished story all at once, but ive dropped webcomics halfway through and didn’t have to feel bad about paying for something i didnt read.
Yeah, I just feel like she's yet to find comics with comic artists well seasoned in using the vertical scroll format. Even the example she illustrated looks like stuff a newbie would do, so in the end it really depends on the artist, the format is not the problem.

I’m working on writing a comic where a girl gets reincarnated into a romance novel she’s never read cause it just sat on her bedside table for months. She wakes up in the body of a side character trapped in the villains dungeon. When the FL breaks in to save everyone isekai girl hears all the noise and hides under the bed in her cell. The FL thinks the cell is empty and doesn't rescue her, and isekai girl ends up having to join forces with the villain. The author can also speak to her and kinda helps her but I’m still figuring that part out.
I highly recommend Room of Swords and Soulwinder since they had the most creative use of the scroll format I've ever seen (in my opinion). Room of Swords already ended and is free to binge read, but Soulwinder has unfortunately been canceled after the first season and is planned to continue elsewhere.

I got so tired of the intense unwarranted bullying in many webtoons featuring high school 😭 It may be a cultural thing because I noticed this in a lot of Korean webcomics? But I got really tired of this in unOrdinary. There’s no justification for the bullies to go to the lengths they do.
Can't remember where I heard it from (podcast interview maybe?), but it is definitely a cultural thing. Bullying is apparently extreme in Korea. Unordinary tones it down later as the characters grow. I highly recommend continuing it if you like stories about fighting against corrupted authority.
bullying is a very big and real problem in korea and i assume the writers of these webcomics just write what they know or grew up with (doesn’t mean they were the ones bullied/bullying, but that it was prevalent around them) like there’s the whole webtoon Get Schooled about it which is fantastic imo.
The premade talk bubbles and those default flower brushes and the like are such a pet peeve of mine! Some artists can make it work and I know it saves time but 90% of the time, it looks really out of place. I feel like it would be better for artists to make their own brushes, that way they can save time and still have something that fits their art. I mean, I'm not going to. I draw everything by hand because I'm crazy. But other artists should!
Yes! I disagree with Lavender about the panels themselves; I personally get distracted and taken out when a panel outline is off or misshapen. But speech bubbles are a whole different story! They're part of the art. I personally never use premade brushes for patterns and such, always make your own
I gotta say The Old Man Reincarnated as a Villainess has been a fun angle. It centers on the incongruous protag’s relative social and emotional maturity and serves a ton of “wholesome boomer” energy. I can’t hate an overdone trend if it gives us weird border examples like this.
Lol, I knew the villianess reborn trope would come up. It's such a prevalent trope - and I eat it up. It's my guilty pleasure to read. I find them pretty and silly. They are usually bad, ngl, but I think some are unique and neat.
Age ago I thought that I will never get board of it and then I thought that there are more interesting novels out there that don't get turned into comics but then I got board and started reading lots of the comics that I have forgotten about and have not finished and realised that all the ideas I thought would be new, innovative and interesting weren't they were all kind of generic in a different way
@@whythont9395 The Crimson Lady/The Resetting Lady (depending on the site you read on) and The Crow’s Prince on Tapas are some I read. i love it everytime. either "the villainess is killed but is put back in the past to undo her wrongdoings" or "reborn as the villain in this storybook" and i eat it up *_everytime_* any kind of reincarnation/travel in the past story i really love lol. idk its just satisfying every time to see the protag being one step ahead everybody (still gettin some trouble because the changes they make affcet everything but yknow) and usually getting justice and stuff and its not always great, but its really satisfying to read if well-done. i know people can't bear when a protag does well, people are so quick to jump to the mary-sue accusations, but i actually fucking hate when the protag literally never wins/manages to do anything because yknow it has to stay "interesting" (because thats the only way apparently) and its great seeing a protag who has an advantage over everybody and is really clever about it.
I really like the scroll comics. I know they can be done lazily but there is also a lot of potential for creativity with real world timing and pacing with reveals. I’ve seen some really awesome examples. I think both formats are great but I do find the page layout strains my eyes when there is a lot of text.
I've been really into these reincarnation stories, but I gotta admit, sometimes I get one story confusedly with the other, because they are so similar 😅
Same! All the characters look the same and they always use the same "Plot twist" and I'm just dizzy trying to wrack my brain and remember what's happening.
This isn’t really a trope, but a common thing I’ve noticed in webtoons that really annoys me is words in asterisks for actions that are already happening on screen. Words like hug, shove, kiss, etc. It completely takes me out of the moment. Like, you’re already drawing the action! I can tell that the characters are hugging because you drew that!
It's not the first time I saw someone with the same pb. But like it's kinda funny bc tbh I don't even see those words lol If they're not in bubble speech I don't see them haha
The only time that action asterisks are useful is in hentai, thriller and action, I guess they intensify the moment. Like in action when the person falls on something and it makes a very specific *tong or In thriller when the villains footsteps are closing in but they're not in frame from the victim's perspective so they put the asterisks of *footsteps sound or any other one, or in hentai when you know certain asterisks intensify certain actions coz they're acting as a representation for the sounds that we can't hear
I want to see an isekai webcomic that has a woman in an abusive relationship get transported to a world that has nothing to do with any media she has consumed, and then she sort of learns to live there over time and has to deal with her trauma. No random spontaneous love interest bs. Only a love interest if they’re completely non toxic and help her learn to love herself
Maybe the love story could be a casual telling. Like the protag starts realizing what a healthy minded individual and companion your spouse is really meant to be and seeing how wrong her abusive ex was.
The worst trope for me is when the male love interest is jealous and gaslights the dumb female lead into falling in love with them. Being jealous is okay in a relationship, it just becomes a problem when your jealously destroys you to the point where you can’t have your lover live their life without you breathing on their neck
Regarding the first trope, that’s why I love The Remarried Empress. You’re able to get a revenge story without 1. Isekai or 2. The main character actively seeking the revenge out. The actions of the people that have either wronged her or hate her are their own downfall, and she’s just watching it happen. Plus, living happily without them in your life can be it’s own best revenge, and that’s what she’s doing.
Tbh, Remarried Empress also has an issue where it takes a medieval setting and factors in all the complexities of it (caste systems, nobility, reputation, slavery) but then tries to build characters who are supposed to be "revolutionary" but never break out of those systems For example, slavery is a very common practice in Remarried Empress: Navier and Sovieshu are fine with letting it happen and were on okayish terms with Viscount Roteshu (a slave owner) until he started conniving with a slave (Rashta) against them to get what he wants Navier takes Viscount Roteshu's daughter (someone who hated Rashta for getting with her brother and wanting to run away with him) under her wing, and this is supposed to be "cute" irony And so on It's even stranger in the novel because (spoilers) (spoilers) (spoilers) Sovieshu loses his memory and Rashta (the slave) is executed for bearing a child that wasn't his Even though Sovieshu is the guy who caused Navier the most pain and shares the burden of endorsing slavery within their kingdom, Rashta has to bear the brunt of it even if it's something she had no idea about, and the story can't acknowledge that because Sovieshu isn't mentally aware enough to take blame aside from being heartbroken that he lost Navier (Spoiler over) I used to like the series, nowadays I'm meh about it because I have a hard time actually rooting for Navier since her careless view on slavery inadvertently led to God knows how many innocent people living in destitute servitude (Rashta was enslaved through no fault of her own, but because her dad sold her off to pay his debts)
@@shantelygarcia3650 that's understandable, it took me a long while before I saw a critique of slavery in the story, and realized "hey wait a minute, The viscount has thousands of slaves and Navier's fine with this? I thought she cared about her citizens?" And to be frank, there are definitely things to like about Remarried Empress: the multi-faceted characters, the 4-d chess, the drama - it's perfectly fine to like the series despite the flaws But the story tends to harm itself by including characters who are meant to be revolutionary but operate and benefit _within_ oppressive systems instead of breaking them down when they have the influence to do so
That's always the sweetest (as in wholesome) kind of revenge and fitting for a girly tale. I'm tired of all these masculine female slaughterers these days
I got two of her books too I pre-ordered since I wanted to get the tarot cards, (which I never did get even though I sent in the receipt and got the book) and then I got a second one when she released signed copies!
you talking about the text bubbles looking like stickers has me thinking about how to use it as an intentional stylistic choice with other "stickers" mixed in, i think itd look really cool if done well
I promise you, "Another Typical Fantasy Romance" completely changes the game for me when it comes to the Isekai trope. I have never seen a Manga portray such a real, healthy relationship before. It knows it's just another trend in the Isekai trope and really takes advantage of those elements. It's the only one I haven't gotten bored of yet.
The villainess isekai webtoons are kind of a guilty pleasure for me. I've read so many you would think I'm sick of them at this point, but I keep finding new ones I like lol
I really enjoy the "Villainess" thing when done well and though there's many "meh" ones, the fact there's so much to choose from means you're sure to find something you love eventually The "taming" male leads thing though? Hate it. It's usually so manipulative and there's lots of dubious consent going around Your point of disliking the very obviously not handdrawn stuff I definitely get, but I feel like it's often a result of how far artists are being pushed, and how quickly they have to turn out chapters to make any money (unless they have a second job, which then again takes away time from working on the comic)
Forgot to mention my pet peeves: Age gap for the main or side characters; Happy ending means you need to be in a relationship; It's hard to transfer from vertical format to manga format; Different platforms have different sizes, so you have to adjust to their conditions to publish your comic; Only isekai webtoon I appreciate are the following so far: What's Wrong with the Duke? (Tapas), The Soulless Duchess (Tapas) and Villain to Kill (Webtoons). I tend to avoid this genre because it's repetitive but I love the ones I mentioned because they're different from one another and they have their own twists and turns.
Personally, I wouldn't count Villain to Kill as an Isakai since Cassian was only transported to the other side of the world and not another world entirely.
There's this one webtoon called "Girls of the Wild" which is COMPLETED. I have reread this story like 4 or 5 times now, but the most recent time I reread it was on the webtoon app and I could only read 2 episodes a day and was locked behind a paywall (webtoon didn't always have this either, like, I reread this story like 3 times beforehand perfectly fine) I hate how they're even putting ALREADY DONE AND FULLY COMPLETED STORIES behind a paywall
I completely agree!!! I hate that Webtoon has done this since I also really like to reread comics but I'm not going to pay to unlock episodes every single time, esp. if I've already read it, and having to wait to unlock each episode (whether its 3 hours (Tapas

@SingingMan i agree! ive seen some really well done psychological thrillers/horror stories with stockholm syndrome and the like, but it never pretends to be healthy. some webcomics have epilogues where its shown that the characters have grown and are trying to make it healthy, but thats rare. usually it ends in death or escape.
Honestly, i love the villainess isekai. It might be because im autistic, but i don't like re-reading things, and i love reading several stories with similar plots. It's cool if other people aren't into it, but i personally love having access to so much media with very specific tropes. I'm the kind of person to replay a song until i get sick of it, a problem i can solve by finding similar songs so i can obsess over them all at the same time, similarly to reading several of the same plot stories at once. Also, i love your "actual war criminal" drawing.
Omg im also autistic and i've always thought i was weird for hating to re-read or rewatch things but being able to replay songs over and over!!! So cool to see someone else who experiences media like that too. ❤
Beware the Villainess is one of the only webtoon with a trope like the first one that I recommend. It plays with the cliché and is overall very good, y’all should give it a try
Personally I didn’t like that one for that trope. I don’t know, but I just didn’t like the FML. She just seemed annoying to me. I liked “death is the only ending for the vileness” although for the next one I personally didn’t like but people loved “kill the villainess” which has a realistic romance and realistic MC. “The one within the villainess” too oh and “I’m the villainess, so I’m taming the final boss” where the ML is just a shy guy. “The old man reincarnationed as villainess” ya know sruff like that
@@Yeahimamusicalfan Well, I really like Melissa but especially the other girl you get to see later. The messages this webtoon spread are very good and it’s a funny story that’s why I mentioned it. I haven’t read the ones you said except “Death is the only Ending for a Villainess” and it was very good so I’ll go for your recommendation
I actually really disliked that... I'm biased bc I hate the slave trope, the brother trope, and the ML trying to kill her on first meeting trope. to each their own ofc, I'm not bashing on your tastes!
Not really an Isekai but more of a regressor/returned back trope but I really recommend My Mom Got A Contract Marriage. I love that instead of the character that got returned the story is from the perspective of the daughter of said regressor who is cluesses as to why her mom suddenly acted strange one day. Tho a bit of trigger warning as the mc got abused by her mother from before she returned from the future
After some research, it does seem like HameFura (my next life as a villainess) popularized the genre of Villainess Isekai - however, it seems that the genre was initially pioneered by a light novel series called Kenkyo Kenjitsu? At least, from what I can tell.
I think a webcomic that does the whole "scrolling, dispersed text bubbles, made for phones" style is Heaven Official's Blessing. Spreading the text over multiple panels adds a sense of anticipation, but the art is so detailed and beautiful that there's so much to look at that it doesn't become boring. Edit: the only issue is that it's hosted on a platform that does micro transactions. Technically they aren't required, but if you don't pay you have to wait an incrementally longer period of time to read the next episode. (1 minute, 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hrs, 24 hrs, then it repeats). It's really irritating, especially when you're waiting for the next update and then you have to wait an additional few hours to actually read the newly released episode
One webtoon I’d recommend that doesn’t fall into any of these tropes is Nevermore - it’s truly fantastic. While it is in scrolling format, it does it in such a gorgeous and unique way, including backgrounds and some of the most artful transitions I’ve ever seen. The story and characters are extremely well written and 3 dimensional. The art style is incredible, unique, and always very visually interesting, It really is underrated!!!

Yessss I adore Nevermore! Not only is every panel a whole ass illustrastion that's just g o r g e o u s to look at (especially the one's that have Lenore and Annabelle I mean what-) but the characters are really interesting and in depth and the storyline and worldbuidling are superbbb. I remember when the netflix show wednesday came out and the academy in that show was called "Nevermore academy" I remember thinking damnit now this is all that's gonna come up when I search nevermore...
for the scroll style pet peeve i've been reading Marionetta which i feel is really using the scroll format with some really nice panels and backgrounds! It so refreshing because unlike a lot of webtoons now that use pre-made assets (not hating on them , i understand the time constraints :,) ) Marionetta's backgrounds are all hand drawn and colored by a colorist and it's from the same author who wrote Hooky!
I wish it was that easy but not everyone can draw stuff like that I feel bad for people who want to make webtoons but get similar comments. No hate to you but it's difficult to be compared to others the reason I haven't released my own webtoon
@@DreamiMusho yeah i understand that too. Not everyone has the time or money to spend all day drawing backgrounds for webtoons. Only established artists or rich artists can afford to do that. I don't mind reading webtoons with an asset as a background.
Totally agree on all of these. I do enjoy some of those reborn-isekai or I-died-and-get-to-start-over-again stories but they're definitely SUPER oversaturated, which wouldn't be so exhausting if they didn't feel like regurgitated stories with slightly different characters. Some of them are really good and have actual interesting plot hooks (Empress' Lipstick and Long After The Ending are REALLY good for this) but too many of them are frustratingly similar to each other. I do wish some webtoon creators wouldn't space out their comics so much with unnecessary panels for JUST ONE WORD BUBBLE but I'm not super pressed about it. I definitely prefer the new vertical scrolling style in a lot of aspects because of the formatting of the app. Page-style makes it impossible to read or see details, so at least for Webtoon and other similar apps' formatting, the vertical just makes more sense and makes it easier for me to appreciate the art.
I thought of two ideas for this: 1. Inconsistent character designs. There's a difference between improved art styles and changing their outfit or parts of their hair style with no in-show reason why. 2. The power of friendship solving everything. Not to be edgy, but I hate this one on a personal level. Edit: 3. "Redemption arcs" where a character just explains their backstory and all is well, even after they killed innocents.
@@abhainn35 Like my brother says in a voice oh-so-close to Molly Weasley: WiTh thE pOWer oF fRIEndship, EVERYTHING IS POS- *Dies in fortnite like a fjujing idiot* Well, guess that didn't work.
10:11 Another thing about this that I feel is frustrating is the fact that before the excessive microtransactions, people could leave top comments at the end of the latest chapter and people in the audience could actively give their input on that chapter as if in real time. Meanwhile now, you may scroll down to the top comments and most of them are just comments from weeks or months prior about how they used their coins. It distracts from the interactive experience that weekly comics have between the readers and the author. It becomes less about the story and more about the microtransactions.
I agree with the last point, I wish I could just buy the whole web comic like an ebook after previewing the first 1 or 2 chapters, but the reading experience almost feels like episode because of how they treat it
I can immediately see one problem with this model. To encourage people to pay to see the next chapter, you have to insert a lot of mini-cliffhangers, whether the story needs them or not. So now everything reads like "The Perils of Pauline." I don't have anything against episodic stories -- TV is literally built on that -- but this model makes it harder to explore different story structures.
Just curious, but what apps are you using that require you to pay per episode? I only use Webtoon & it's all free unless you want to fast pass, but even then it only costs cents. 7 coins for early access per episode, $10 per 100 coins
These are some really good points. It sucks that webtoon artists these days basically have to convince their audience that their story is still worth reading *every single episode.* It takes away from the story as a whole and instead forces the author to keep raising the stakes even during points where the stakes really don’t need raising.
@@legallybland227 some webcomics ive read are more designed to be read all at once, so there arent really cliffhangers or “previously”s. however, since so many of these are updated once a week, they lose readers over time even if the actual story is amazing.
I'm very into webcomics and the amount of Isekai romance stories that come out are insane, and a lot of the time it isn't needed or it's randomly tacked on to the story with no meaning...but I still love them😆😆 For something more unique with super adorable and gorgeous art try "For Better or For Worse"
Yeah sometimes there are ones where it didn't have to be a story point at all because it never comes up again. Or with some slight rewriting, it could have just been a "vision of the future" sparking a change of heart. When they're good though, I'm HOOKED
It’s honestly why I’ve stopped using webtoon so much. I used to be obsessed with webtoon and would read so many comics religiously but the repetitive nature of so many of them eventually drove me crazy. The only ones that keep me coming back every other week at the moment are I love yoo, purple hyacinth, seasons of blossom, and horror type ones like homesick, stagtown, anything carnby Kim, and not even bones.
Regarding the second point, I bought a printed version of one of my favorite webtoons about a year ago now, and I was really excited to get it and support the author. When it arrived though I was super disappointed to see that the formatting was quite literally just the same scroll format but pasted onto the pages, with several strips a page. Some of the panels were even cut off at the bottom because they just continued at the top of the next strip. I don't begrudge the author for doing it that way as it was self-published and impressive that the book was made in the first place, but it was still sad to see.
Oh nooooooo That's a huge pity because one of the selling points of getting the book would be to see how the comic translates into a traditional format. Getting to read the same thing over again but have it fit the medium
A great different take on the reborn into a novel trope is The Greatest Estate Developer! I haven't read it in a while so I don't know if it got bad or anything, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It hardly had any romance, and the main character was quite the jerk not gonna lie, but it was refreshing. It plays more out like a video game, with him needing to earn people's respect to become better at his job
It is such a great spin on a protagonist (lol) who uses past and present knowledge. I really like the MC due to the different more antagonistic mindset of his.
Omg yes!! I have been absolutely obsessed with this one lately, its a really Different take on most isekais, and the facial expressions throughout the comic have genuinely made me laugh
I'm also not into "Reborn as a Baddie" trope but I very much like "Death is The Only End of The Villainess" comic, cause it has good character writing and the romantic interest of the heroine is pretty believable (not just "guy who commits war crimes").
I think a lot of these tropes you mentioned that seem kind of "lazy" are due to the sheer amount of work artists have to do to get webttons frequently updated. But I definitely agree with a lot of these.
My favorite manga/webtoon rn is 'Villains are destined to die', both because of the GORGEOUS AND UNIQUE artstyle, and because of the plot and especially character growth. The protagonjst isn't ur usual nice girl trying to correct the character's reputation, but she's actually been through a lot irl and her view of the world is extremely cynical
As someone who makes webcomics in his free time and uses the Clip Studio Paint tools and bubbles, I think it really depends on how you use and customize them. Reducing the thickness and making small adjustments with the custom bubble brush go a long way to making them fit with my stories, while also making them feel slightly more professional.
Yess I agree! I make different in thinkness and I make the tail myself so that it stil feels a bit more organic. But I make my comic in a page format first and foremost. In my actual pages I use my handmade speech bubbles but for webtoon it's just easier to slap on these stickers xD
Omg! I was planning on making a webtoon, but i eventually caved and decided to just write a book instead, and i couldn't figure out why it was so hard for me. As it turns out, i HATE drawing in a scroll format. I prefer the page format, but i also would have no clue how to properly promote it and i had also planned on getting it printed one day. Self publishing a book just seems a lot easier for me rn lol, although i might adapt it into a comic one day
It’s funny that you mentioned the prevalence of “reborn as a villainess” comics since they’re my guilty pleasure! I admit that a lot of the ones on the Webtoon platform aren’t very well written, however there is one called “My In-Laws are Obsessed With Me” that I love. I didn’t really expect much when I clicked on it (especially because of the title) but I’m so I did. It’s set in the same vaguely European world you mentioned (though the mc isn’t from our world, she time travels after she’s murdered instead). The depth of the characters and visual storytelling is stellar; there have been moments that have hit me hard because the pacing of the panels. The male lead isn’t a tyrant, more of a sad and awkward guy, and he faces consequences when he does wrong to the protagonist. I just wanted to put that out there since it is a great read. :)
I love that one! I like Beware the Villainess on Tapas too. I like the genre but I am starting to feel very picky about it. I don't like it when they just...skip past interesting or conflict-filled parts. When they work, there's the drama of feeling doomed by your fate or circumstance, and trying to overcome a terrible reputation and the trauma that comes with it. Villainess Turns the Hourglass was also great because it really acknowledged how much the heroine is not...really just a great person out of nowhere and she still has baggage.
Does “my in-laws are obsessed with me” have any gl in it? I saw the cover for it with the red-haired woman and I thought it had a female love interest and I got so excited 😭
@@crowfoot8059 Unfortunately, I think the endgame is the male lead. She’s only working on forming platonic relationships with the rest of the family, sorry! The redhead (Saoirse) absolutely rocks though, she maintains a lot of inner strength and humor despite her trauma.
Same I love them. Especially a typical fantasy romance (more time travel than isakei) because the main characters just have so much trust and love for one another.
Thank you for hitting the nails on the heads so, so well. As for the scrolling format, I understand the utility of it, but like you, I feel that the art's potential is sacrificed for the utility.
I myself don't mind the "reborn into a book/game/novel" genre at all, because as a person who has read more than their fair share of them, it eventually becomes a game of sorts to see how the author can make their story unique and outshine the rest. This genre has its own gems that are absolutely worth the read, but finding them is always a struggle since you must go through a lot of mediocrity first.
It really be like that. It's like, I like them, but with stipulations. I know by now what I''m expecting and am tired of, but to see one go against the mold and try a different angle is refreshing
I have a few that break from the mold (as far as I know. I only read a few of these and they all have pretty unique storylines) From a Knight to a Lady A knight is killed by someone she trusted and is thrown into the body of a girl who (maybe???) died after jumping into a lake because her lover told her to. It's all about the knight figuring out how to save the kingdom she was defending and it has a sweet love interest who falls for her first. Reporting for duty, Duchess! This is a newer one. A military woman is killed and ends up playing the meek side character in her friends romance novel. She says f that and decides to make this girl strong. It also has a surprise villian :) The Tyrant wants to be good A girl kills her brother because (daddy issues mainly lol) she thought she deserved the throne more than him. She is killed during her tyrannical rule and is reborn in the same body. Now she is trying to live peacefully and work through her trauma! I'm the queen in this life A woman does everything to make her fiancé the king but he ends up killing her and marrying her pretty half sister. So when she wakes up in her younger body (either teen or young adult I don't really know) she decides that instead of spending her life and body to make a man king she is going to make herself queen no matter what. This one is pretty damn cathartic and it's funny as hell to watch her ex-fiancé fall for her while she wants absolutely nothing to do with him
I actually really like the scrolling layout ( coming from someone who only reads Webcomics on my phone). I definitely don't like the big spaces in-between either, but technically you could put it in the other layout too. With the scrolling type - if the Webcomic is well done - it feels like you're watching a show because the page doesn't give away everything. You see one scene at a time and I really like that :) It makes things more shocking when you have to do the pasting yourself.
@@lex_adraws04 Yeah, I think so too. I'd have to sit really close to the computer screen ^^; So I think it all just depends on the Media. On a PC, the white void around the panels would be distracting (to me at least), on a phone, it fills out the whole screen and sits comfortably in your hand. maybe there could be a way to make vertical scrolling for PCs? It would make much more sense with the layout.
I seriously feel that lock one. There's this one webtoon I read called "I love yoo" and it's pretty good but can be slow paced at times. There was this part and it was pretty much just a flash back arc and it took SO LONG. These episodes come out weekly which means that for like four months I was reading these black and white flashback episodes nearly forgetting what's going on present day. I kept with it but it was excruciating.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when a romance webtoon is a slow burn but it takes like 200 episodes just for the characters to interact or even consider they have feelings for eachother🤦♀
Yeah slow burn sucks; also everything moving too fast sucks. There has to be a middle ground. As someone who like Isekais (I know, I know) Im not a huge fan of the Villainess trope unless it goes dark. I've been reading a lot of them lately tho soI got called out right out the gate. Damn.
Personally im a sucker for slow burn. It just makes me understand the characters more and gives actual depth to the relationship aand you can see how they start falling for each other, which i adore
I AGREE WITH THE PAYING TO READ. It's super annoying when i find a webcomic i like, but i need to pay to read it. With Webtoon introducing daily pass on on-going webtoons, i find it difficult to keep up. And with other sites literally allowing the readers only a few episodes at a time before locking the last 10-20 episodes (like Tapas), its unsatisfactory, since i couldnt get to the conclusion. This leads to the obvious illegal uploading of comics. But unfortunately for readers who cant afford to pay the artist, they will use these sites methods enjoy some comics. Touching on the daily pass, i hate it when it's done with really big webtoons, like Hooky or Nobless, since i can only read two out of 400 something chapters at a time. Its time consuming, thus causes people to give up
The isekai fl flood is both a curse and a blessing. There's so many that you can filter through the bad ones and find a good one and you'll never run out of stories. Unfortunately they overcrowd the webtoon spaces, so it makes searching the romance tag a bit tedious if you're not in the mood for it. A personal recommendation for a webcomic about a fl who died a few times prior and now has another chance at life: The Broken Ring : This Marriage Will Fail Anyway It's REALLY spicy though! Like seriously, they buckabang a lot. I mean it, this is smut territory. It's so damn well written though and I really like the pacing and paneling. The art is so beautiful and you can really feel the despair of the fl. I don't think there's many people talking about it either which is a shame.
One thing I love about webtoons on a phone, and think more of a “scroll format” suits are the stories that have music. When it’s done well, it can create a lot of tension and pay off, and it adds a whole atmosphere almost like you’re watching a tv episode.
9:10 this whole issue was me when I was trying to read Not an angel. This webtoon's audience massively dropped because of the daily passes AND webtoon decided to make a pay wall on the last three chapters toward the end?? It felt so unfair when I couldn't read what happens next and I had to skip those episodes to see what happens in the epilogue instead(which was free). I feel bad for the series 😭
This exactly! I can deal with the daily passes, they're mildly annoying, but whatever. BUT, then they put the final 3 episodes behind a forced paywall sometimes and it just completely ruins it.
Yo, artist of a (currently unpublished) webtoon here. Webtoon follows vertical scroll format, and I wanted to elaborate on how vertical scroll can be used. I understand how it can feel slow and generally uninteresting if done that way, but if the artist knows what they’re doing, it can be an amazing tool. Panels and scroll are both equally good, but for different reasons. Some of the things I like about scroll is, like you said, the pacing- personally, I think it’s more immersive. More than that though, I think the scroll does an amazing job of communicating movement. If done right, panels can almost have an animated feel. Just wanted to give you a different perspective :) love your videos!
I believe “who made me princess” is the first “villainess Isekai” I’m not sure but I read it so long ago. Also the art style is gorgeous and I think it’s a bit different from the others lol. 😭
@@meatabogan2871 Hamefura may definitely have popularized it because after its anime release there was a webcomic boom....But I've read somewhere that Chrestomanci (Charmed Life) is what laid the foundations of the villainess isekai.
I actually like the webtoons/scroll layout tbh. It's much more dynamic, less tiring for the eyes (if that makes sense). And it's easier to keep consistency when drawing it.
I just wish everyone here would read the wonderful webcomic Omniscient Reader. It’s so good, it’s based on a web-novel if you’re too impatient to wait for the comic, every panel is so pretty, I just adore it. Idk if they plan to release a physical copy but the paneling definitely makes me think so. Honestly the whole thing is so good and more people need to get in on it. (It’s also one of the least tropy stories I’ve read in a while)
It is sooo good! The story is (I think?) a sorta cliche now since I think some other series have taken inspiration for it because it’s so popular lmao. But I really like how it’s going so far, and I think that the stakes are somewhat convincing even tho the main character is omniscient. I like how it breaks some tropes as well :D
My favorites on webtoon of this genre are remarried empress(not an exact clone but def similar vibes) and death is the only end for the villainess. The latter especially, because she violently dislikes most of the romantic leads, but the way the world works is they'll literally kill her if she doesn't find ways to protect, defend, seduce, and so on. nice lil subversion and the art styles pretty. Oh and congrats on the physical book!
Those are definitely two examples on the opposite end of the "vIllainess" subgenre. Like, Remarried Empress is the villainess story without any time travel or isekai (which is why it stands out, as a lot of stories don't really need that element to work, but throw it in anyways because genre convention), and then Death is the only end for a Villainess only works because it's an isekai and that element directly ties into the character and plot. Both are probably in my top ten of webcomics currently
I was just watching several other youtubers complain about webtoons tropes that annoy them and then this video is released just a couple hours later. Guess a lot of artists got pretty annoyed by webtoons recently
@@jazmin9652It’s possible that one person started talking about it and others decided to hope in with their thoughts. That and probably because of just how common certain tropes are perhaps.
“The villainess is reborn as the tyrant’s sister wife (and tames him)” forget being set in Europe from Wish we’re in sweet home Alabama now 💀 (Btw LavenderTowne I love your art style it’s so cute :D)
This actually has nothing to do with the video, but your videos taught me how to draw. Ive been watching your stuff since I was 11 and you've talked about the people and styles who inspired you as a kid. Well, I just wanted to let you know, you're one of these people now. Im so thankfull, all your stuff is amazing!!
about the scrolls comics: they are formatted that way for 3 reasons; 1. so that the reader can read the story faster and therefore chew thought the chapters faster. 2. Economizes time while making them, webtoon artists will often release their comics in big patches or they will have a deadline, some artists deliver a chapter a week so that's why the comics need to be formatted in that way. 3.Making easier to read, this style of webtoon was popularized in Korea and is often read by Korean students that stay most of the time in their phones and officeworks. This comics are made that way for a reason, is simply not affordable to do a full comic panel with backgrounds and ground breaking panels, it would take too much time to do this and time equals money (unfortunately) (there is more reasons but those 3 are more important)
I think the worst part about microtransation web-comics is that it encourages the story to be as drawn out as possible in order to milk out as much money as possible.
Reborn in another world as a villainess or whatevers webcomics are my guilty pleasure I fr be collecting them 👁👁 For anyone who does like them I recommend “Not Sew Wicked Step-mom” and “A Wicked Tale of Cinderella’s Stepmom” each being a sort of twist on Snow White and Cinderella respectively. They are literally so well written like oh my gosh I’m enjoying both so much it’s not even funny and I’m just abusing this opportunity to gush about em. IF YOU READ THEM COME BACK AND TALK TO ME ABOUT THEM IM
I'm also super tired of the female isekais but they're also super addictive. I had a super unhealthy period around Christmas where I would stay awake the whole night reading 120 chapters. I would scroll until my hand started to hurt and start scrolling with my other hand. Most of them were ongoing so I started reading new ones and would have to reread parts when I came back because all of the plots are so simulare. I do love" The Broken Ring: This Marrige Will Fail Anyway" though. Instantly fell in love with the way they drew the main leads to the point I drew them in my sketchbook
4:30 personally, the only webcomic ive seen use the "scroll style" formatting, and manage to pull it off, was castle swimmer. it managed to make the compositions still incredibly interesting, and it emphasizes the open, vastness of the ocean
I'm actually really like the scroll style in webcomics, and the sort of composition in can create, especially in comics with a lot of action, like The World After the Fall, and epecially in Omniscient reader. I do agree that it's better elements are generally not seen, and alot of webcomics suffer from a 'blank space' issue.
There's a super long history to the villainess isekai, but Colleen's Manga Recs here on UA-cam has a great video explaining it from its origins and first appearances!
About villainess-style stories, you should try Cassmire the Loyal Sword. It's amazing, the attention to detail is great and it's actually a good, cute story about sibling love. Also the art is actually fairly realistic, the MC Cass has actual, realistic scars that show up on her hands in every panel. It's not just perfect shiny anime art-
I think “Rewriting the Villainess” is a good comic with the villainess trope, also for the scrolling thing, the webtoon “SOULWINDER” made a really good use of the scrolling for chapter 39. I think if used in the right way it can make really interesting transitions that can’t be made on a standard comic. (Not saying it’s better, I just think they’re two different layouts lol)
I’d definitely recommend “death is the only ending for the villainess”. The art style is honestly gorgeous and I absolutely love the ml and fl! Another I’d recommend is “how to get my husband on my side”. In the beginning the fl and mls relationship is a bit frustrating due to some misunderstandings but it doesn’t really last for that long and overtime they just become a lovey dovey couple. Also I read this manhwa called “who made me a princess” and it was the first manhwa that sucked me into the isekai tropes. It’s been a while since I’ve read it and I might not remember things too clearly but it was a pretty good read in my (from what I can remember ) opinion.
The last two points really are not only disrespectful to the readers but also the artist, because, as you mentionned in the last one, they not only have to basically make every pages full of hype, but there's also the time "limit". I've seen so many tutorials on how to do webcomics *faster and smarter* to the point of being worrying. It's almost the same problems with mangakas and manga's magazines in the end. Crunch time and capitalism guide to faster and lazier results (also, I'm not pointing the finger at beginners, we all heavily used the basic tools in our art programm at some point lmao).
I feel so called out by the first one since I read those stories quite a bit. I actually decided to write my own, and I am going to try to focus more on why the villainess became the villainess instead of the romance.
2:00 “Taming the tyrant” is an actual webtoon and it’s actually very interesting (not an isekai tho the mc does go back in time after being turned into a sword for 300 (500?) years, it gets quite dark at times)
Im really happy that I discovered lavendetowne. Tbh, idk if I would have stuck to art if I hadn't discovered her youtube channel. I love her art style sm!
"off-brand europe" is now my favorite way of describing every isekai world ever
“Off brand Europe” is how I’d describe the made up kingdoms in hallmark movies

Plaid patterns on shirts are slowly killing me every time someone doesn't take the time to add dimensions hjhnxn
Same, and idk how, but I always see it every time
I imagine that kind of thing stems from manga traditionally being made physically and using screentones instead of drawing each skirt, tie, and pair of pants with a plaid pattern. I know EXACTLY what you mean though
I feel like it can be really cool stylistically, to make things look more collagey, but it has to be used intentionally for that to work.
I don't mind it

Chick, women hate each other. It's their biology.
Isn't that just ntr?
@@bloodbadger5332 kinda yeah but i think its more about the girls hating girls aspect , since a lot of stories have girls hating girls but no cheating
Nothing turned me away faster from a webcomic than watching the sister gloat about how much they hated the protagonist without giving any clear indication as to WHY she hated her in the first place. Do these characters just live and breathe hate as the story demands it?
Edit: They probably don’t show the reasons because it’s supposed to be a part of the intrigue. However, the only mystery I’m interested in is how the fuck these stories hit the popular page in the first place.
Yessss! Marry my husband got too frustrating to read. It got to the point where her need for revenge is too toxic
“This man has murdered people, but why do I only see his sad face?” is a sentence that just made me stop suspending my disbelief and drop the story entirely
Yeah, I’ve seen (and dropped) a lot of stories that were like that, it really annoys me how people romanticize murder, violence, and possessiveness.
@Amethyst.i depends if everyone is also evil. However if it's a stories where heroes and villains and the concept of morality legitimately exists in the same world like... real life, then yes its a huge problem.

I'll call it the three Ps lol

OHH I LOVE DON'T CLICK, have to catch up.

Read Strong Monkey, you’ll enjoy it!
She's talking about comics from the site Webtoon not webtoons. She seems to have them mixed up
personally i don't mind the wait, i like having something to look forward to, if i'm feeling extra impatient i might farm free coins for an extra fast pass chapter, but otherwise i can be patient. the thing i do hate is the FUCKING DAILY PASS. pisses me off, especially when it's a long comic that keeps updating so you never catch up, and if you miss a day you're even more behind, and there's literally no way to read more without paying. hooky is the only one that i don't mind having daily pass on, since you can read up to 5 chapters a day and the comic's already finished so there's no need to catch up.

@@curiouschicana9098 Oh I did get through the whole first two seasons before I decided it wasn’t for me! I did like how the characters grew.

The premade talk bubbles and those default flower brushes and the like are such a pet peeve of mine!

I love those types of stories but it's so hard to find.
Marry my husband is sorta like this
I love how this is basically Outlander, lol
Sounds like how to win my husband on my side
The worst trope for me is when the male love interest is jealous and gaslights the dumb female lead into falling in love with them.

Sadly thats the most popular tropes among teen girls.

im quite attracted to blatantly horrible tropes
Hey, nothing wrong with liking horrible tropes in fiction. It's just fiction after all.😁
You should read It's Kind of a Funny Story on canvas! It's great
Yeah, I'm a fan of repetitive isekai stories myself if they're interesting or catch my eye.
Tbh, Remarried Empress also has an issue where it takes a medieval setting and factors in all the complexities of it (caste systems, nobility, reputation, slavery) but then tries to build characters who are supposed to be "revolutionary" but never break out of those systems
For example, slavery is a very common practice in Remarried Empress: Navier and Sovieshu are fine with letting it happen and were on okayish terms with Viscount Roteshu (a slave owner) until he started conniving with a slave (Rashta) against them to get what he wants
Navier takes Viscount Roteshu's daughter (someone who hated Rashta for getting with her brother and wanting to run away with him) under her wing, and this is supposed to be "cute" irony
And so on
It's even stranger in the novel because (spoilers)
(spoilers)
(spoilers)
Sovieshu loses his memory and Rashta (the slave) is executed for bearing a child that wasn't his
Even though Sovieshu is the guy who caused Navier the most pain and shares the burden of endorsing slavery within their kingdom, Rashta has to bear the brunt of it even if it's something she had no idea about, and the story can't acknowledge that because Sovieshu isn't mentally aware enough to take blame aside from being heartbroken that he lost Navier
(Spoiler over)
I used to like the series, nowadays I'm meh about it because I have a hard time actually rooting for Navier since her careless view on slavery inadvertently led to God knows how many innocent people living in destitute servitude (Rashta was enslaved through no fault of her own, but because her dad sold her off to pay his debts)
@@kn-jt9dj those are actually excellent points! I didn’t think of that.
@@shantelygarcia3650 that's understandable, it took me a long while before I saw a critique of slavery in the story, and realized "hey wait a minute, The viscount has thousands of slaves and Navier's fine with this? I thought she cared about her citizens?"
And to be frank, there are definitely things to like about Remarried Empress: the multi-faceted characters, the 4-d chess, the drama - it's perfectly fine to like the series despite the flaws
But the story tends to harm itself by including characters who are meant to be revolutionary but operate and benefit _within_ oppressive systems instead of breaking them down when they have the influence to do so
Your Throne is just *chef's kiss*, imo

I really enjoy the "Villainess" thing when done well and though there's many "meh" ones, the fact there's so much to choose from means you're sure to find something you love eventually
The "taming" male leads thing though? Hate it. It's usually so manipulative and there's lots of dubious consent going around
Your point of disliking the very obviously not handdrawn stuff I definitely get, but I feel like it's often a result of how far artists are being pushed, and how quickly they have to turn out chapters to make any money (unless they have a second job, which then again takes away time from working on the comic)
Yeah it's a lot of "read the first two chapters, drop it as soon as you are disappointed because it so rarely gets better"
Forgot to mention my pet peeves:
Age gap for the main or side characters;

I tend to avoid this genre because it's repetitive but I love the ones I mentioned because they're different from one another and they have their own twists and turns.

Honestly, some of them are fire but there are a lot of trashy ones too.
Yeeesssss! I love Nevermore & Shiloh! Kate & Kit have such beautiful art & well written stories ❤️ They absolutely have mastered the vertical scroll format
agreed. nevermore is so good.
NEVERMORE YES
The art style of that comic and Shiloh have been such a big inspiration for my own.
Wow, what is that about?
Yesss i love marionetta as well. I read it because of the author also created Hooky
YESS both hooky and marionetta r so creative with its paneling i love miriam’s work!!
Miriam is one of my favourite webtoon creators , both plot wise and art wise. She's AMAZING.
Page-style makes it impossible to read or see details, so at least for Webtoon and other similar apps' formatting, the vertical just makes more sense and makes it easier for me to appreciate the art.
lavendertowne's voice is so soothing that i could listen to her talk about the most gruesome murder and i'd just be like "aww, thats sweet"
Nahhhh you right
Lol yes
it’s funny cause she actually does when she reads creepy pastas for us

I thought of two ideas for this:

Well, guess that didn't work.
Same-it may be trash, but it’s MY trash. Call me Security Breach Chica cause I will eat it up.
FOR BETTER OF FOR WORSE IS SO GOOD
Yeah sometimes there are ones where it didn't have to be a story point at all because it never comes up again.
Oh nooooooo
That's a huge pity because one of the selling points of getting the book would be to see how the comic translates into a traditional format.
I love it so much; the action is great, the comedy is superb, and the art is very dynamic. Highly recommend it!
I second this! Or third this but its gotten even better!
It is such a great spin on a protagonist (lol) who uses past and present knowledge. I really like the MC due to the different more antagonistic mindset of his.
the most recent episode had me cackling. def one of my favourites.
Omg yes!! I have been absolutely obsessed with this one lately, its a really
Different take on most isekais, and the facial expressions throughout the comic have genuinely made me laugh
I'm also not into "Reborn as a Baddie" trope but I very much like "Death is The Only End of The Villainess" comic, cause it has good character writing and the romantic interest of the heroine is pretty believable (not just "guy who commits war crimes").
Penelope is such an awesome female protagonists i love her so much
I think a lot of these tropes you mentioned that seem kind of "lazy" are due to the sheer amount of work artists have to do to get webttons frequently updated. But I definitely agree with a lot of these.
I love the first trope so much. It’s like reality tv for me, just overly dramatic and unrealistic. It’s just so entertaining
saaaaaame, i'm a sucker for royal melodrama
YESSS LMAO
10:10 tapas is a prime example of this. For all the completed series I’ve seen you HAVE to pay for the last 20 episodes or whatever
They also region-lock some of their series! It's SO annoying
ITS ALSO FOUND FAMILY 🥲🥲🥲🥲
Same I love them. Especially a typical fantasy romance (more time travel than isakei) because the main characters just have so much trust and love for one another.
Webtoon and Lavendertowne, two of my favourite things. Can’t wait to watch this!!
I only read a few of these and they all have pretty unique storylines)
From a Knight to a Lady
A knight is killed by someone she trusted and is thrown into the body of a girl who (maybe???) died after jumping into a lake because her lover told her to.
It also has a surprise villian :)
The Tyrant wants to be good
A girl kills her brother because (daddy issues mainly lol) she thought she deserved the throne more than him. She is killed during her tyrannical rule and is reborn in the same body. Now she is trying to live peacefully and work through her trauma!
I'm the queen in this life
A woman does everything to make her fiancé the king but he ends up killing her and marrying her pretty half sister.

Truee, it's easier to read scroll comics on phone. The text in page comics are often really small
@@Woopsdiditagain yup, it'll be better to have a better scrolling layout for pc readers. But i think webtoon is actually designed for phone readers?
@@lex_adraws04 That sounds reasonable, yeah probably.
One of the best uses of the scrolling format ive ever seen is a webtoon called distant sky
Fr, the slow burn shouldn't be how long it takes them to *meet*, it should be how long it takes them to admit their feelings 😑
**cough** Aggretsuko **cough cough**
Any slow burn recommendations?
A personal recommendation for a webcomic about a fl who died a few times prior and now has another chance at life:
The Broken Ring : This Marriage Will Fail Anyway
It's REALLY spicy though!
I Love Yoo has been doing this really well the last few chapters and Cursed Princess Club is always on point with it
I loved it when "Everything is fine" did that
9:10 this whole issue was me when I was trying to read Not an angel.
Piracy is morally correct in this situation
I understand all your gripes with the villainous, agree with basically all of them, and yet, i still love them.
Love this, thank you. I needed insight about this as I started doing a scroll comic myself
I believe “who made me princess” is the first “villainess Isekai” I’m not sure but I read it so long ago. Also the art style is gorgeous and I think it’s a bit different from the others lol. 😭
"Who made me a princess" isn't really a villainess isekai, but it's definitely tangential to the genre
I think My next life as a villainess was really the first to actually create the concept and popularise it.
Literally such a amazing read I loved it and it was my first one 😭
@@meatabogan2871 Hamefura may definitely have popularized it because after its anime release there was a webcomic boom....But I've read somewhere that Chrestomanci (Charmed Life) is what laid the foundations of the villainess isekai.
It started from manga first villainess mangas existed years before then manhwas they took inspiration from them i guess.
I like how it breaks some tropes as well :D
it's my favorite webcomic right now! every panel has me in awe, and it even got me to start reading the web-novel
@@inevitabley when I was at the part where some text was censored FOR HIM I got chills. The comic is so good and it gets so tense I just love it
My favorites on webtoon of this genre are remarried empress(not an exact clone but def similar vibes) and death is the only end for the villainess.
It's the way a lot of the titles are just stories summaries- there's no vagueness it's just the entire plot
I was just watching several other youtubers complain about webtoons tropes that annoy them and then this video is released just a couple hours later. Guess a lot of artists got pretty annoyed by webtoons recently

about the scrolls comics: they are formatted that way for 3 reasons;
1. so that the reader can read the story faster and therefore chew thought the chapters faster.
Reborn in another world as a villainess or whatevers webcomics are my guilty pleasure I fr be collecting them 👁👁
For anyone who does like them I recommend “Not Sew Wicked Step-mom” and “A Wicked Tale of Cinderella’s Stepmom” each being a sort of twist on Snow White and Cinderella respectively.

It's not just perfect shiny anime art-
11:05 I believe the word is 'capitalist', that's what most of the popular social platforms are going through.
Man, I should've scrolled before commenting. I mentioned "Rewriting the Villainess" in my comment as well haha
To be fair Rewriting the Villainess is more like a subversion of the trope because it's a reverse Isekai (I do really love it though)
Shinnie lavendertown isint real, she cant hurt you.
Shinnie lavendertown: 8:33
she's real, im sorry
@@LavenderTowne how could you 😿
The last two points really are not only disrespectful to the readers but also the artist, because, as you mentionned in the last one, they not only have to basically make every pages full of hype, but there's also the time "limit".
