- Hey gamers, today I wanted to talk about some character design trends in video games that really bother me!!! Mostly extremely specific niche things tbh. Let me know if you have anything like that in games that for some reason just ruffles your feathers!

ok guys let's all post our most favorite and least favorite character designs here:
too much of one color, or too many colors. sounds counterintuitive but you gotta commit!
My favorite is kinda like cute designs and catty stuff like Killua Zoldyck from Hunter x Hunter but I don’t like things like the long face vampire thing you pointed out
I'll start: My least favorite is probably Voldo from Soul Caliber, it's actually a pretty well designed character but he do be making my skin crawl. My most favorite currently is probably the Koroks from LOZ Breath of the Wild, I think they're looking more charming than ever, I love them sm.
Ahh I just love it when characters have a dog and that’s it
Umm, uhhh! When the characters are drawn in these weird show y or fancy clothes when they are some kind of warrior or they have to move a lot. It’s kind of annoying.
I call that guy John shootaman

I call him John Whiteman, because it's ALWAYS a white guy.
Male armour: full suit of armor
Female armour: steel bikini
Does this mean that girls have higher defense than dudes because guys need a whole suit by girls don't?

Another point about the Elves though, in mythology they could often be interpreted as really scary.
An example, the German word for "Nightmare" is "Albtraum" which basically means "Elf dream". So much for nice happy Elves, I like them in stories but I don't want them to visit my bedside at night.
I just wish they made elves nightmarish or a lil scary.
Lol never thought of this but yeah ... Alb is a type of Elves l guess
@@reynajelly I heard a few times the reason why Tolkien's elves were translated into "Elben" in German is because of the Alb having stronger cultural roots in Germany. Or rather, "Alb" is what the common ancestorial word(s) turned into in Germany, while "Elf" is the English result, but it's essentially (derived from) the same thing.
..Except that German folklore tends to be a bit more evil for some reason; another example of that is that "changelings" are considered hell demons exchanged by the devil in German folklore, while in English it's (newborn or retired) fairies exchanged by their fairy family, and they have their own intentions for doing so... but I digress.
In a fantasy headcanon, or as a writing idea, one could make the "Alb" a type of elf, since elves are apparently so incredibly prone to evolution that I like to joke about elf being the most unstable element.
Ok but Aurther Morgan is honestly so perfect he gets the pass of “Typical brown haired dad”

Not really with the cop thing. But they have their own set of morals
Either a cop or hates all authority - gotta get both ends of that spectrum XD

Also, his daughter or wife is either kidnapped or dead because otherwise why would he do anything
and he has a morally gray past
Every video game protagonists wants to be a dad but we all know the true video game dad
Octodad
Yeah, too bad he looks like an ordinary dad, makes the game boring.
Ikr it’s like they couldn’t make a more creative dad. Just a normal human dad with his probably normal human kids.
YES ,they needed to be a least A little more creative. he looks so normal. like A everyday dad.
I recognized one of the elf designs you showed and if I remember correctly they were terrifying on purpose. Like, the elves in that game are CREEPY in the lore on a level rarely explored in fantasy. So I honestly think the designers took this exact “Video game elves are too weird and long” mindset and cranked it to 11 for some freaky character designs to match the lore.
As someone who likes history, the Medieval Sephora lady angers me soo much
What bothers me most is like when there's background/side female characters that have no makeup, dingy, and over all fits the medieval era better than the main lady characters.
anne boleyn was clearly a time-traveler with 2000's make-up skills and that's how she snatched ur mans. everybody knew the only rightful queen of England was you, your majesty, good to see you back!
ikr, it's like the designers think that women back in the day couldn't be attractive without having cake faces
well it's not based on actual history and is canonically magic enchantments (at least in case of TW3), so u can calm down
Unfortunately she's so common I've become desensitized to Medieval Sephora Lady, she's everywhere not even just games.
I want a dadlike main character of a grungy video game that's ACTUALLY like a dad. Gimme the mullet, the 70s and 80s bands, the gregg universe vibes. I wanna see a dude with a beer gut and bad puns fighting in an apocalyptic wasteland with a crowbar
I love this idea
PLEASE
So basically my dad.
i’m gonna design a character on this now
YES PLEASE
The thing with the sorceresses in Witcher is that they don't just use make-up, they use magic to significantly alter their appearance. That's why they are all conventionally attractive - they all used magic to alter their appearance. For example, Yennefer has a hunchback in her 'true form'.
That is a horrible excuse, I love it
The until dawn characters scare me more than the game. They’re too realistic but at the same time too robotic
Get this.

But he's obsessed with cats.
For that, I would allow it just this once.
i wanna do it
This is permissible :D
And here's the kicker hes allergic to cats
That would just be my dad
I completely agree with the first one, its like the anime guy protagonist. Your main character or protagonist should be interesting or have recognizable features. I hate when they are boring like that
Yes, the boring anime protagonist, the video game Dad protagonist, and the "average" girl protagonist from every young adult fiction novel... They're all boring and bland because they're meant to be self inserts for the reader. I understand it, but I do not agree with it. It's boring as hell.
you have to have a really strong storyline or side characters if you want a bland dad/bland anime character to be recognizable. like ryota from kakegurui.

When looking at the different mythologies of elves, very few describes them as beautiful and kind. For a lot of them they are described as ugly, mean and mischievous.
The ugly and mean version was very popular in media back in the day but in modern times the beautifully and kind version has skyrocketed.
It was the same thing with vampires. Most myths describes them as ugly and that was the most popular version of them until modern times where we now have beautiful vampires which looks pretty much the same as humans just more pretty.
To be honest I'm kind of tired the beautiful creatures that look almost the exact same as humans. I enjoy the ugly versions since they in modern times stand out more.
What make me hate elves more is the damn stereotypes we give them every time, the "I am way better then you, you filthy casual mortal monkey"
Every time I see elves in games, movies, tv shows or books. They are always acting like those cheetos girls from disney teenager movies?
Elves in book: lovely and kinda spooky/ghostlike
ELVES IN GAMES: L O N G AND G R E A S Y
*S l e n d e r*
Video game elves are french fries: confirmed
Depends on the book. In modern versions yes.
But if you look into the mythologies of elves then most of them describes them as ugly and mean. It's only really in certain myths that they are beautiful.
@@sapphiregold4195 You're talking about two entirely different concepts of elves. In Norse folklore, the "alvor" are stunningly beautiful (mainly female) and live in the forest with the elf king. Celtic mythology depicts elves as small creatures that are fairie folk.
So we have “brown hair dad guy”. So what are some common traits of “surrogate daughter girl”?
she's a teenager (sometimes younger, but almost never older), has shoulder-length brown hair, and no more than two of the following: freckles, a hoodie, baseball cap, extra sass.
Brown hair in a ponytail
I only know two of these, ellie and clementine and they're like distinct enough I think
Young teen, girl, shoulder-length hair, hoodies, and hats, parents not there, not like other girls tm.
Seriously tho I always see the character who doesn't like girly things
Brown hair, pony tail or short hair, freckles...
Beauty is in the watcher's eyes. I love elder scrolls elves, since they have human-like characteristics, but as we see them better, we do realize they are elves and not just humans with pointy ears
This sort of elves get better highlighted in the skyrim, where elves look clearly odd compared to a human, but I love it.
I feel like the character design you’re describing for an elf would be better suited for a vampire.
mines pretty popular but it’s the over sexualization of women in games specifically the games where the men where full sets of armor and the girls are wearing bikinis💀

I actually really like it when elves look inhuman and uncanny. They aren’t human why should they fit human beauty standards??? Still totally a valid opinion tho, pretty boys are great.
Yeah I kind of agree, I see where she is coming from but I think just having them as beautiful tall people with pointy ears is so played out. I always loved when games or books make their fantasy species not follow the normal view of the species and just goes buck wild with making a fairy or an elf insane and alien looking.
@@2bagels1toaster18 yeah but now the creepy blue skin slenderman isn't original anymore, it's just the new trope
Yea, that's what I was thinking. As much as I love beautiful elf characters, it's just so overdone so designers have to think of something else to make it more interesting.
Also, beautiful elves are based mainly on Sidhe mythology I believe? But there are a bunch of other 'Fae' creatures that look a lot creepier and a interesting to use as a fantasy race.
I will never forgive Bioware for not sticking with the elven design from DA2. I love the nose design in elves in that game 😍
@@jayiu9170 finally, someone with the correct opinion.
"A face so normal no police sketch artist could find this guy" I love this
Well originally elves WERE monsters, with the whole stealing your babies and playing with your organs thing
I feel like the elf stereotype makes them look more like weird goblins than elves
Both are fae
I don’t think the “Daddening” of video games is bad, but I wish they’d look different, least a little. Like Kratos. The dude’s a dad in a father-son relationship game, but he has the ashes of his previous dead wife and child all over his body, red face paint, an intimidating bulky athletic build of pure muscle, and one of the most glorious beards in the history of human kind, the most unique designs despite being a video game dad. But the problem isn’t so widespread that I’d call it an annoyance of mine.
So lesson here is: Design more dads in a more unique way, follow the “Dad of *BOY”* design mantra.
I'm pretty sure they're designed that way just so most people can identify easily. Just like in anime how most protags are brown/black haired dude with brown/black eyes and absolutely no special features lol. Also the character isn't always the main interest in a game, we don't always care that much about them, they're basically a vessel to do our own shit. I think that's why they're so bland, they weren't designed as characters but as a tool for the player to have a body in the game and that's all lol
@@reivazel it's so tiring though. Like I get it, but can we have variety every once in awhile? Not every game should have a blank slate to project on. As long as it's entertaining, that's good enough for me.
Those games just need a character customization feature, so that instead of a blank slate you can at least create a body for you to do your own shit with
Same. I love dad characters. Lots of characters being dads isn't necessarily a problem. The problem is that they all look identical (which is itself part of so many main characters being a grizzled white guy with short brown hair, a five o'clock shadow, a muted color pallet, and a gun).
There's actually a great example of a dad character who doesn't look like this in the video: Kiryu from the Yakuza series. He has neat facial hair and a distinctive gray suit with a bright red shirt underneath.
Lee from the walking dead game ❤️
I saw the elf in the thumbnail and I was immediately like oh no Skyrim’s finna get it for their crimes against the elven race 😭 I love Skyrim so much but the elves have such a distinct overdone sharp thing going on that they have same face syndrome IMO. I wish the dark elves, high elves, and wood elves had more visual discrepancies instead of just being blue/gray, golden/yellow, and pale
Lets not forget the Dwemmers, the Falmers and the Tropical elves who are aquatic elves peoples
Yet, they have all the same faces xD
Not quite the same face... Dunmers have more of that marked, wrinkled face with that menacing air (they look a lot like dremoras, by the way), while altmers do have those drawn, serrated features like the drawing in the video. Wood elves have softer, if drawn, features. Note also that the elves' ears in TES are not the same shape. If you're interested in the game's lore, you'll also learn that elves have common ancestors, and that dunmer were once much more similar to altmer (golden skin, and not yet that demon head.).
I've always liked the "brown hair dad guy" because my dad looks identical to them and he always makes jokes about it when we play games together.
Sounds like a cool dad to me :)

The "plain person" main character is often made super plain and generic so the player can relate and self insert better.
I never really got the point of this strat though. I’m playing a game/watching an anime to observe a story, and I’m perfectly fine with a story having a character as a lead, not literally me. Like, are there actually people who _want_ to _be_ the protagonist in every story?..
I get that but it always makes me laugh a bit because I am a teen girl. Like yes, I do relate to this depressed, probably suicidal, middle aged man.
@@HiBuddyyyyyy well most of them aren’t depressed to the point of bordering on suicidal. Hell, some of them aren’t even depressed, I’m pretty sure Arthur Morgan is more just exhausted but is still happy enough to keep going along with things.
Booker, on the other hand, is way past bordering on suicidal. Honestly the reason he probably wasn’t dead before the start of the game is some mixture of thinking it would be too good for him and the alcohol having not quite destroyed his liver yet

Granted, Disney movies tend to be pretty vague in terms of era, and makeup was a common thing among royalty from the, I'd say about 16th century onward?
The thing is, Disney movies are so historically inaccurate that it doesn't matter that much anyway. It's magical and it's made for kids, so they tend to go in a completely stylized and fantasy direction, which I find okay.
For me it's more frustrating when a movie, game or whatever looks sort of accurate to the era and yet, the leading lady will appear with modern makeup. If you're going completely fantasy with vague historical elements, it's fine to do whatever. It's fantasy anyway. But if you're aiming for historical accuracy and then put something modern on your characters, it just looks like either undone research or that you don't care. It's just very out of place too. Everyone is dressed with period costumes and out of nowhere comes the lady with the 2000s eyeshadow.

Really like your videos ! About the Witcher though : the books set it un a world were universes were merged long ago, so a lots of styles are rocked by characters. Also witches use magic to look as gorgeous as possible, and makeup is a huge part of them all. They wear it like warpaint as they are often involved in politics and need to go against kings sometimes.
Also about the Elder Scrolls... well it depends on the lore of the land. I think it's neat that they stay away from the typically "more beautiful than human Tolkien elf". I understand that you want them to be beautiful that being said ! Like I said, great video ^^
OKAY I THINK I can explain the 2000s makeup look - I’m not an expert but this is what I assume - why characters/game models have smoking eyeliner
Is to avoid the awkward mess that is programming eyelashes, waterlines and rendering colours between the skin and eye without them glitching, looking creepy or giving you Tomas the train vibes.
👁👄👁
I remember way too many times where lashes would glitch into the characters eyes in games that tried. Think early assassins creed games (poor Petruccio) or just the Eyes and mouth emoji.^
mine: lazy fanservice
basically, when they're giving characters like unrealistic bikini armor or whatever, and yknow, not only is it breaking my immersion. But, its the most basic bikini armor they could come up with
Like, if ur gonna break my immersion at least make the armor look cool
For real. If ur gonna add fanservice atleast make it original and aesthetically pleasing.
Agreed! So much! And as an avid fan of anime games and anime in general. Personally I tend to dislike fanservice but it doesn't actively bother me, but I still love it when a girl is obviously made for fanservice but still has an awesome design. As you said, they break immersion with style.
A recent good example is Genshin Impact, it's not super fanservice-y but there are some outfits that show some skin (not to say showing skin is automatically fanservice, it's just that some of the angles they use on the female characters are _interesting_ ) but all of the character designs looks so awesome and intricate that I don't mind it anymore.
I don't care if the developers want to put in fanservice-y bikini armors, but if they're going to do that, I wish they'd at least do it for both genders.

Exactly. Where are the men in speedo armor? Give us the content game designers.
Brown hair dad guy is the self insert, tell me I’m wrong
You’re not wrong, that’s the whole point. They need a blank protagonist that male players feel they can “project” onto
Ye it lets me project myself onto the character and be my own dad
@@waterlemonandfriends even in first person
True, and that is what bugs me: this character design still being so prevalent today show how AAA games are still catering to the same demographics. Thinking a 30-ish white male will be "default" enough for anyone to project themselves into means they ignore a great part of the diverse public of videogames.
@@julianapegas2043 1,000%
Realism is a huge drawback for videogames, because its a lot of detail that adds almost nothing as its mostly not noticed, takes a lot of processing power and can be done much more memorable with stylization, i have been saying that for years
yessssssssss, i get so drawn back by realistic games
When you put the live photo for the drawn girl's face, I laughed until I cried, my gosh.

Honestly I love the design for Divinity's elves, they may just be my favourite design for an elf race in any fantasy setting. Considering how Divinity's elves are very much outsiders in the world of Divinity and how different they are to what we'd normally think of elves, their odd, druidic body design and their lore as ritualistic cannibals who eat their dead to inherit the memories as a way of remembering them honestly makes them look and feel extremely unique and cool to look at as opposed to a typical fantasy elf, who is a thin human with a pretty face and pointy ears.
Elder Scrolls has less of a good reason, and whenever I see an oblivion elf all I can fucking hear is "By AzUrA'S sTaR!" over and over again, but honestly I just stretch my suspension of disbelief for that. Unless it's really bad I'd rather take a Elf design that has inhuman and uncanny points to it over a typical fantasy elf any day, even though I like both design concepts.
0:48 what sucks about the brown hair dad type is i don't ever remember if any of these guys were shirtless so i don't even know if they even got a six pack

Botw characters are so interesting it makes me want to go back to drawing just to draw each chatacter tbh

@@Lily-cc4np no, not really. Elves are more humanoid then human. Usually having discolored skin, longer more pointy features, etc. Hylians are more like humans. They have normal skin tones, normal features, they are basically just humans with pointy ears.

The last one about elves I've seen them do with goblins in a book once and jack frost(so i can never unsee it). And also in a more recent game they did it with vampires where it's all like pointy angles.

About make up in witcher: In the 3rd book Triss actually says that the elves created and popularized eye shadows and other make up. And because The witcher is a fantasy game, I think we can close an eye on that.
Agreed. And in the first place, it's not our world, how they do make up could evolve entirely differently from us, i really don't see it as a problem. it would be in a historical setting.
Eyeshadow doesnt specificly have to mean "smokey eyes", so that the developers made it like this is a clear take from what was modern at the time. Added with the headshape that she talked about, also adds to it. I defenitly get the frustation with it so to speak. I dont mean that i dissagree with you either, its just obvious that they havent done any resarch. Most games just adapt a "popularized idea of what history were and what clothes they wore". Which also is showed by the "medival clothes" the women have, since they didnt actually have corsets or anything like that in the medieval times.
But then again, theres nothing wrong with it, it IS fantasy. It just gets a little boring.
I think in a fantasy game in general where a sorcerer wear make up it can entierly be explained by simply saying " she magicked it there. Its illusion". I guess people could argue that saying that is " lazy world building" at the same time, I think that's a logical answer.
I mean, if anyone were to popularize the Hot Topic look in the medieval era, it’d be elves.
Plus there's hundreds of worlds linked together, Ciri visits a steampunk world and different monsters and species are from different worlds, so it would be easy to have worlds blend. Keira Metz has a recipe for eyeliner in her hut in Witcher 3, using egg and charcoal.
What i hate about video game characters is that sometimes the woman's armor would show a lot of skin. Like i understand that they want the woman to represent a hardcore bad ass but even so they should at least give them full on armor and not just a barely covering skin costume.
I actually love the weirdness in TES elves (except for oblivion ones) as opposed to wanting to make them look traditionally beautiful (a change I disliked from DA elves as well in the transition from DA2 to DAI)
I agree with your point about realism being kind of a crutch for AAA games now tho, we need more interesting stylization not more realistic stuff
Look man they could have just stuck with the Tolkien elves, their hair didn’t look greasy and have you seen Orlando bloom??????
Orlando Bloom in that elf costume is literally the reason I'm a film major.
Yassssss!
Lingerie armor for female characters is one of my biggest- but you definitely make some amazing points lol
Yeah right! Like what's the point of wearing an armor?
I understand you want to make her look sexy. Nothing wrong with that. But it doesn't make any sense.
If she's going to fight, she need a protective armor. Geez
if videogames give lingerie armor for women they at least need lingerie armor for guys too, its not fair that only the girls get to look sexy in battle 😡😡
Check out golden axe. Guy in that was built like the terminator and wore a speedo into combat.
