  • I'll need to change the tyres and innertubes in the not too distant future, but right now, this is a really fun project

Your ten euro bike has potential. You will be pleasantly surprised with its performance after you complete your maintenance protocols, sort out the pedals and install new tires. You may also want to consider a new saddle if needed. Take care and good luck.

If you really want to ride it you'll need to disassemble it completely, clean, de-grease, and reassemble. I would also carefully inspect the frame for rust inside. You can probably get inexpensive pedals for the crank, like the kind for one piece cranks. You should be able to disassemble the original pedals and overhaul them. Most of the alloy parts can be cleaned up and polished. www.youtube.com/@RJTheBikeGuy

Agreed. Basically, what I did was a 'first operation' was:
Remove and degrease / clean the chain.
Remove and service the bottom bracket.
Disassemble the rear mech rollers and degrease and clean/grease/lubricate as appropriate.
Adjust and regrease the wheel bearings.
Next step is to ride the bike for a while and check exactly what needs extra work. The brakes and pedals feel OK, and have been lubricated. I'll need to replace the tyres as they are old and won't last much longer.
Originally my intention to leave the rims and aluminium parts 'as is', but I've been cleaning and polishing in my spare moments 😉

The bike was made my Nordstar in the north of France, they had a big factory rolling out steel bikes for whoever wanted them. Supermarkets etc. The aim is to keep it running as is, except I'll need to replace the tyres and innertubes.

Whoops, Starnord, not Nordstar. After the northern star. Company was run by Bernard Dangre.

the frame is salvageable, everything else moving needs recycling
