      Har, har, Steven. I think ASPW should do a trip to the north of CANADA if he wants to see bugs, gnats, no-see-ums, mosquitoes (the insect kind, Andrew, not the fighter aircraft kind!), blackflies (OMG, the WORST! You don't feel them bite because their saliva numbs the skin. I know, TMI.) AND some really beautiful country that goes on forever.

    A writer for road & track magazine swayed me in about 1989 in an article about car bras. He summed it up by saying, for a new expensive car it might be a good investment, but for normal cars, who are you saving it for? If you are working hard protecting your car for someone else, you're not enjoying your car for yourself. I tend to agree. New expensive toy = wraps are great. Used car=spend the money on better tires or something you can enjoy.

    • @dab005
      @dab005 5 років тому +1

      Agree. Aged 4x4 Toyota, even though it may have good resale value, live with the pinstripes and GET OUT THERE! I'm at that decision point right now: go with the wheels I've got, or go for new, wrap it, kit it out, and carry on.

    I did something on the same though process, but slightly different application.. When i bought my factory blue color 2015 HZJ76, I got the 2 sides that get the most bush damage warped in paint protection film by a brand called Durashield. Came with a 7 year warranty too, and had so far protected my Landcriuser well. I believe the paint protection film is much thicker that vinyl wrap too.

    At first I wasn't crazy about the color but it has grown on me & now, honestly, I quite like it. As for cost versus how well it's stood up, I'm looking at doing the bodywork on my '03 Ford F350 Dually & I'm seriously looking at wrapping it rather than paint solely because how well yours has stood up. I think it's done extremely well given the bushes, etc, that you've contended with with.

      : but if your paint isn't in great shape, that probably should be fixed before a wrap to avoid rust setting in under the vinyl. So it may not be an either/or, but a paint and wrap or paint only...

    Great and informative video! In the Balkans, should you ever come for any of your projects, for a new vehicle it is a must! We've seen some very nasty, deep scratches due to branches in the thick Balkan forests - these scratches that you have and the bushes observed in your videos are like feathers compared to the branches in our forests.
    However, we've decided not to protect our new Hilux - the paint jobs for a whole vehicle in our area are covering the price of 3M protective film (Venture Shield). Instead we've opted to apply polyurethane in the future keeping our color. You may want to check U-Pol Raptor for example - color matching is about 1 000 EU at the moment and work in our area would be 250-500 EU depending on the shop.

      It depends , if you like the exsisting colour or not , when using printed vinyl like Andrew did it is laminated after the printing process with a uv clear laminate to protect it from the sun ,it is the same as the clear ppv you will put on new paintwork . the only diffrence between the clears is the patented technology used by either manufacturers 3m vs who ever else.

    As an old history teacher, I really appreciate the color you selected. Its history gives it meaning. Great video! I've kept my 2008 Jeep JK for 11 years and 130,000 miles. I didn't wrap it, but it has never been through an automatic car wash, so the paint looks great. Yes, it has a few scratches in the clear coat from branches, but with a good wax, you can't really see them. It has only been washed with clean cotton microfiber mits. There are no minor surface scratches or swirls, at all, even after many winters with road salt all over it. Miraculously, there is not a single stone chip on the front edge of the hood. I attribute that to something in the airflow around it. It has never had protection, either. Strange. On my new JL, I already have a small stone chip or two after a year. If I knew about wrapping, I'd have probably done it when brand new.

    vinyl wrap is an easy way to retain extra value in your vehicles, especially if you go into some gnarly backwoods type stuff. if nothing else it keeps your vehicles paint from sun damage, and can be a big help in recovery, if you get the scotch-lite, or that micro-LED wrap for night visibility.
    and its even better when you use a ceramic coating like something from Gyeon. Mojave and baja desert dust literally brushes off. look at the baja and mint trophy trucks. they use it to save time cleaning up the truck so all the sponsor stickers are visible. it also works great on the glass and lights and such.

    It depends on how long you will own your car.3-4 years ok.If you will own it like me forever or perhaps 10 or more years,safe the money and get a new paint in about 10-20years,depends on how it looks and rust in that time.In Europe sometimes we have strong winter and lots of salt on the roads so it rust quicker. If you go to eastern europe you get a completly new painting for about 8-10000 €.I have my troopy in beige-sand coloured and would paint it after 10-20years completly new and never wrap it up for that money cause if you offroad quite hard in bush or forrests you have scratches all over the vehicle they probably go through the wrap. I better eat wraps.Keep on doing Andrew,great videos like pretty all of yours

Surfaces that are subject to more heat( bonnet , roof ) then normal where harder then that of the sides . $300 to remove. I was told depending on the adhesive prices could vary . Car was a Mini Cooper, so I’m guessing a larger vehicle probably double that price .

    • @dinosshed

      Keeping with the theme, I too throw my old Land Rover into mud holes and go smashing through the bush every chance I get. I’d call brush those small shrubs on side tracks usually when in the desert sand areas, they brush your paint like a scotch brite pad which fux it good and proper. Stones that are sharp will always make their way through to the paint, pebbles bounce off if going slow enough. Wraps are definitely worth having if your vehicle is in good condition or if it’s totally shit like mine, can hide the nastyness. I think the wrap job on Asp’s cruiser is literally as far as you can get as humanly possible from a hack job. It’s the best detail wrap I’ve seen.

On your topic, My wrap guy advised unless I knew 100% history of the vehicle in that no paintwork had ever been done after production ie. repairs with spray paint, clear-coat It was best not to wrap. As while doing the new wrap and later down the road removal it most likely to take off the bodywork newer than original repaired paintwork. Cheers

    • @CraigMason24
      @CraigMason24 5 років тому +4

      Hi Andrew.
      It all comes down to the quality of the wrap material used. My company did this wrap and we use 3M premium wrap films for the vehicles we do (both commercial and private). The importance of the film used can not be understated. It is not just a question of how well a film goes on and looks, but as you rightly point out, how easy it is to remove, and the condition of the underlying paint work when it is removed.
      If a company uses a poorer quality film that is not designed to conform in to, and stay down in the deep recesses, then they sometimes use an 'adhesion promoter' spray which is a good way to cover up the fact that the film used is not of conformable vehicle wrap quality, or the application skills to apply the graphics correctly so that it stays on are lacking. The problem with this sprays is that they work well for their purpose - making films stick. However, the issue comes when it is time to remove the wrap or graphics. It is extremely hard to remove from the body of the vehicle, and a lot of spray residue will be left behind. A good applicator using good films does not need to use these sprays, as all they do is create problems for the client down the track.
      Our 3M films are highly conformable and most definitely removable with the application of a bit of heat from a heat gun or hair dryer. Good wrap films are definitely designed for clean and easy removability. However, they do have a life span, and as signs appear of a wrap deteriorating, they should be removed at that point.

    Trying to decide here in the New England, USA. I checked with one place and they won’t guarantee fading on the roof or hood/bonnet. Will cost about $2,800.00 for my 2011 Toyota Tundra. I bought it used last year from a neighbor. The price was way below market price. Since my other vehicle was twenty years old but only had 62k miles on it but rusting I replaced it. The paint on the Toy is 95% perfect. Has a few small scratches on one side. But the reason for a possible wrap is color. It’s RED! I hate red!!!! The vehicle has low miles and no frame or body rust!! Paint vs wrap????

Perhaps you unpeel a body panel size piece and see how the paint under fairs + see how hard removal would be before suggesting people do it to a new vehicle. You could reapply a new section to compare fading as well. Kudos for being transparent about the donation of the product. Thanks as always for sharing your time and passion on youtube.

      @skezus 5 років тому +1

      I've learned "should" and fine" to be problematic assumptions. Also, warrantied against what--manufacturers defects (a vague term that lets manufacturers pick and choose what they cover)? Would be nice to see what the reality is. What's the point of having a third party expert like Andrew review something if you are going to just assume what the manufacturer has to say about it is gospel?

    • @CraigMason24
      @CraigMason24 5 років тому

      @@skezus . We unwrap a lot of commercial vehicles that have had wrap film on them that we have applied years before. So from our point of view, it is not an assumption. We see it all the time. The issue normally arises with partial wraps we do, is that the body paint under the car is in far better and protected condition than any areas that aren't wrapped. However, if cheaper films have been used initially that are not 'fit for purpose', it can take a lot of work to get the graphics and glue removed and back to a reasonable condition. Hopefully Andrew will move this vehicle on at some stage and remove the wrap and film it. That is a good suggestion. It would be a good follow up piece. What he will have underneath is a clean car with paint in excellent condition that won't have UV damage. The key is not to leave the wrap on so long that it is failing and degrading past its use by date. Remember, a wrap is not, and should not be sold as a permanent recolouring solution.

    • @skezus
      @skezus 5 років тому +1

      @@CraigMason24 Thanks for your reply Craig. Two things 1) I don't think Andrew mentions there being a shelf life to the wrap, so thats a glaring omission in his review IMHO. Second, I do think the odds of the wrap coming off and the paint being fine are good--you seem to know what you are talking about. But frankly I don't know you or the other commentor (Kaos Fury) from Adam. Andrew is the expert I have come to respect for his opinions and I think it's a problem he isn't testing the product through it's life cycle; i.e. Wrap the vehicle, take it on the trail, unwrap part of the vehicle to see how it comes off and how the paint fairs underneath.

    • @CraigMason24
      @CraigMason24 5 років тому +1

      @@skezus You raise some fair points. The only issue is, Andrew doesn't want to remove his wrap right now, as he is happy to have it on there. If he takes part of it, it has to stay off, which will ruin the overall look of his vehicle.
      When starting this project, Andrew did his research and specifically searched for a 3M accredited application business. Our history in wrapping is long and successful. We are one of only a few Platinum Certified Vehicle Graphics Application companies in Australia. To achieve this status, a wide range of systems, processes and procedures are audited and checked by 3M certification people annually. All I can talk from is our experience, and give you an educated feedback in my area of specialty. Andrew is good at what he does, and does a large amount of research, and very well educated, but he can not be an expert in all areas.
      I am not sure how long Andrew intends to keep the wrap on before removing, that is up to him. I suppose his choice was to give people some feedback now, a decent amount of time in to the test and offer his opinion, or wait a few more years down the track until he is ready to remove and can do the whole report as you suggest. However, at that point, the wrap film technology would have advanced significantly, and the review would be less relevant.

    Andrew, in United States new trend is picking up on using bed-liner urethane spray, to spray the entire body of the car, apparently, stuff makes your body panels and bumpers so strong that you can hit them with a mallet and they won't dent. Makes it look very military like an aggressive matte, and also super rugged, doesn't scratch. If you do manage to scratch that stuff just take a torch to it and it will melt the area and mend itself, at any rate way more protective than a wrap, and with a wrap, you still baby it because it will scratch, with this stuff you can drive through a thorn forest. Cheap vinyl uses cheap glue that can easily bind to the paint and cause damage. Old adage, you get what you pay for, a good 4x4 wrap will set you back 4-6k.

    Imo wraps are no good if you're main objective is to protect the paint and body panels. I did consider a wrap when I purchased my new 4wd 8 years ago... I'm glad I didn't, would have been a total waste of money for me... I still have the vehicle and it's covered in large dents and scratches from 4wding. Wraps won't protect you from dents or sharp objects!
    I agree, they do look good and do offer the flexibility to easily change the colour of your new vehicle and custom designs for business ect ect.. Meh, I'd rather put 3.5k towards quality suspension and camping gear.. The stuff you actually use and get value out of. 😉
