    Andrew you have covered the aspect of weight fairly well, one thing you have not mentioned, which is eaqually important is your axle weights both front and rear .you may be legally within your vehicle gvm but over on the front axle Toyota LandCruisers do not have a particularly great front axle weight limit which is easily exceeded with a bulbar, winch and other accessories such as a dual battery setup. You may very well have created a cantelever with the addition of the two spare wheels and dual spare wheel carrier, however remove one spare wheel and the corresponding arm for the wheel carrier and you may very well have transferred too much weight to the front axle. I would have asked the weighbridge to give me the gvm as well as individual axle weights for the vehicle and then look at your weights again regards XDrive

      I like the thinking here, only one problem, take engine weight into consideration that's a huge portion of the front end weight, when the backs fully loaded with gear parts wheels etc, the front is balanced out

      My front axles did get wear on them. Could this be from removing the back seats (all of them)? And having a rear that sits a little high? I never considered that.

    Great video! Staying on or just under Gvm, It's one of the hardest things about setting up a remote touring vehicle. Most out there would be over gvm by a fair amount. I was one of them once.
    Good decision on the wheels and tyres! That will make a massive difference to the way your vehicle handles.
    And I agree, In most cases, I think Gvm upgrading is a bad idea, from my experience it's far better to cull the weight.. If your hundreds of kgs over and you cannot cull, then you've chosen the wrong vehicle.

    255/85r16 on the oem GXL rim is ideal imo. A true 33" tall tyre and should be significantly lighter than the 285s. Only problem is tyre choices. Basically you can get it in a Toyo MT or Maxxis Big Horn and that's it.

    Awesome vid ,the first thing people seem to think you have to do to an overland 4wd is put the biggest and heaviest tyre you can buy on . the next thing you then have to do is put them as high as you can and as far behind your rear axle as you can on the back.
    The broken axle vid makes for good viewing on you tube.I have done many kilometres of outback roads on skinny tyres and corrugations that rub the labels off your cans and containers the last thing I want to do to my car is hang a lot of weight on my live axels

  • @photohiker01

    At about 5:35 you show the unsprung weight with the leaf springs. If the rear leafs on the 70 series are replaced with coils like the Jmacs system, the unsprung weight is lighter, way lighter than changing the weight of the wheels and tyres. The Jmacs makes the whole rear a bit lighter than a leaf one. Also, the vehicle suspension is way better with coils front and back .
    For big trips, save some weight by only carry the second spare tyre. We have driven outback all around AU with double spares and have never had to use the second one. That's since 2008.

    • @slateslavens

      Personally, I'm going for double spares on my build. We made a trip into the hinterlands of Idaho and ran over something in an old converted train tunnel. Both RH tires has an inch-long cut right in the middle of the tread. We only drove out because my wife insisted in carrying a full-size spare in the 95 VW Golf we were driving and we hadn't removed the 'temporary' spare yet.

    Paying attention to weight of the stuff on your rig is important. While the off road community seems to follow the rule “bigger is always better, and too big is about right.” I find there is often a benefit for restraint in outfitting. In discussing using lighter wheels and tires, even though they are a little smaller, they do come with advantages. When it comes time to change them, the smaller wheel and tire does take up a little less space, and it is easier to handle when it comes time to remove and replace them. A 10kg weight saving per tire may not seem like much, but when you start moving that thing around, it becomes quite noticeable. Also, a smaller lighter tire is often less expensive to replace when the time comes than a bigger heavier one.

    Too many people overload their vehicles and then wonder by reliability suffers. I recently downsized from a Chevy Tahoe to a WJ Grand Cherokee. First thing I did was weigh it at the commercial scale and then calculated the load I can safely carry. Now I am working the gear and vehicle to remove useless weight. The first step was to remove the power seat tracks and replace with manual from the salvage yard. Weight savings is equal to the weight of my tool roll, second I switched the 10 CD changer and in it's space now store my first aid supplies. Third, I modified the rear seat brackets so I can easily remove the rear seats, now I store my cooler and mess kit where the seat was. Fourth, I added skid strips on the roof so I can throw plastic bins on, without having to add a big rack for the same function. And fifth.... the hardest..... convinced my copilot / girlfriend to accept us both losing 25 pounds this year. 15 more to go..

    Just looking at that vehicle you could tell it was over GVM (bar work everywhere, fuel, water, shower, awning, rooftop tent). Then you went and added a double wheel carrier, rear bumper, ladder - it was no wonder you were over your GVM.
    Ditch the rear bar/carrier, run the 235/85s and just carrier a spare tyre (no wheel) in addition to your standard spare (tyre and wheel). You will be under your GVM comfortably and will be able to carry more Coka Cola!!.
    But you will need to carrier some wheel braces/bead breaker and be able to use them.

    Thanks for the video. One thing you forgot to mention is that GVW is not only vehicle specific, but also per axle. You could be under vehicle GVW, but over axle GVW. For instance my '77 Jeep Cherokee GVW is 6025lbs. The front axle GVW is 3500lbs and the rear GVW is 3200. As you can tell there is a 675lbs difference, in theory, between what the combined GVW of the axles are and the actual GVW of the vehicle. I am sure this is to allow for some weight distribution between the axles.
    I changed from the stock 31" tires to 33" tires. I also changed from the factory style steel wheels and went with aluminum wheels. The added weight of the tires was nearly cancelled out by the addition of the aluminum wheels. I gain only 8lbs. per wheel, 40lbs total with spare. Thanks, again for a great video.... George.

    My 33x10.5R15 Super Swamper TSL Radials weigh 60 pounds each. The early Pathfinder aluminum "Lego" wheels they're mounted on are 22 pounds each. I've got 82 pounds on each corner plus one on the tire carrier for a total of 410 pounds of wheels and tires. I previously ran the same size BFG KO and they were 10 pounds per tire lighter. The truck rode a lot better on washboards but the tires were no where near tough enough for forest wheeling. I had sidewall bruises and bulges, tread separations, carcass separations, and TONS of punctures. Each tire had at least two plugs or patches, one had five! After six years of hard use the Swampers seem to be indestructible. No punctures, no carcass issues, no leaks, and the sidewalls are so thick I've never knocked one off the bead, even running at 10 psi.

    One other significant factor, which many are not aware of, is tyre's weight carrying ability (load index).
    Overland-equipped vehicles should in general case use tyres for heavy loads (usually marked as C, LT, XL, RF or some other industry jargon denominator).
    The only certain way to recognize a heavy load tyre is to check its load rating index and compare it with a standard load rating for that particular tyre size.
    Unfortunately, such tyres are heavier than standard load tyres and they ride quite hard if the vehicle is not loaded up good.

    There is one more important thing!
    Where is the weight on the wheels, closer to the center or on the outside of the wheel.
    With the same weight of the wheel, a wheel with a heavier rim and a lighter tire will save more fuel and accelerate faster.
    Because the weight is differently distributed along the lever of rotation, the closer to the center, the less torque is needed to rotate the lever.
    That is why wheels with a large tread will not save fuel.

    What do those side brush bars weigh? I would not deem them necessary for protection unless you tend to go on very tight tracks with rocks either side. They don't stop roos or cows from damaging your bodywork either.
    I'd consider taking them off.

    It is a compromise between weight and strength. The 16x8 ROH alloy is a very strong wheel rated at 1500kgs - suitable for GVM upgrades. The steel aftermarket wheel of similar weight is nowhere near as strong. If you want a strong 16x8 steel wheel, the factory 105series steel wheels weigh 17.5kgs - that is 4kgs more than the aftermarket steel rim and I'd suggest is much better engineered.
    With tyres, your 235/85R16 BFGs weighed 22.4kg, while the original factory Bridgestones in 225/95R16 weigh approx 18kgs per tyre. I'm sticking with the Bridgestone - will see how they go on my Troopie

  • @BenzinioB
    @BenzinioB 5 років тому

    I personally would do both - left 1 of the spares and change the rest of the wheels as well. That results at whooping 100-120 kg weight loose.
    I can save money on fuel, I can save weight on fuel caring few litter less as the consumption goes down not to mention what differences 120 kg put on the on and off road performance of the vehicle.

    Would love to see a whole show on the effects of sprung vs unsprung weight. What does 30 pounds (13.67k) do on a wheel, on an axle, on the floor board, on the roof to performance.

    If you think you need two spares.....why not THREE....or FOUR??? You could just as easily have two tyre failures and still be in the same predicament. The bottom line is that there are so so many things that "MIGHT" go wrong on a trip; it is impossible to cater for all of them. I bought a 2012 Chev Silverado (pre-loved) in 2015. The original owner had spent a kings ransom adding so much STUFF to it. When I got it back here to SA (from Queensland) I thought I'd better see what it weighs. Its GVM was 4490kg and the weighbridge showed 4650kg.... EMPTY!!!! I managed to identify around 400kg of STUFF I didn't really need (including the second spare tyre and the two wheel carriers (the remaining spare now lives inside the cavernous canopy). Ol' mate had 3x 100ah AGMs, a 2000 watt inverter, some VERY heavy drawers, TWO fridge slides with cages and a 15,000lb winch. I've also done a GVM upgrade to 5,171kg meaning I cannot have any alcohol in my system (not an issue these days anyway). All in all it was an interesting exercise getting it all legal to tow my 3500kg caravan.

    Back in the day, we called those skinny, aggressive tires "Grave Diggers" - of course, this was before tubeless tires and airing down would simply destroy them. Ya, I'm about your age... anyway, great video (again, still, as usual) and that's the best place to start trimming the kilos. Have you gone too far? 235/85's have 9.3" section width. What does that leave for tread width? 7.5"? I expect you're going to be raising many eyebrows in the near future. Cheers!

    Unsrung weight is something that is lost in the bigger is better thinking that so often goes with off roading vehicles. One of the easiest ways to not break drive train parts is not to over stress them with to large a set of wheels and tyres. Have you considered the JMAX rear coil conversion for the best ride available.

    • @defendermodsandtravels
      @defendermodsandtravels 5 років тому

      I use air helper springs at the rear. One adjusts the pressure to suit the load carried. They are a good solution and, incidentally, they weigh very little.

    Now also take out internal weight, the draws inside would be a fair amount of kg in metals not needed take out excess internal items you dont need but want, lets use one of those coffee makers one i found is 2.5kg and holds 700ml of water thats 3.2kg of extra for coffee when you can take that and turn it into 1 2 liter bottle of water backup and a cup of instant coffee. every one ive camped with of late has this need of luxury items like a full onboard shower system with tankless hot water when they could get a pop up tent, in engine heat exchanger, mixer valve, jerry of water and do up a cheaper system and save tons of weight. i guess this is small car person talking but theres 0 need for all the extra weight in systems that are used less then a few times a year for those not full time touring.

    I prefer my steel wheels. Bend them and you get a hammer out. Try that with Alloys. I carry 5 wheels and tyres and a tyre with some tyre irons. I have never had to use the tyre thankfully. I have been overlanding for 26 years. Not as long as you but it has worked well.

    • @honorharrington4546
      @honorharrington4546 5 років тому +1

      And how much is the sledgehammer and torch set going to weigh? If you think that just a small hammer is going to straighten a bent wheel, please go to the junk yard and get a wheel with a bent bead seat. Try to straighten it! Use everything that you would have on the trail with you and TRY! If the bead seat of the rim is bent to the point that a tire will not hold air you will need to heat the rim red hot there to anneal the rim enough to work it back round. Even a sledgehammer alone will not succeed. Also, if you bolt the rim to the truck to hold it while you hammer on it use the spare mount not the axle, you will damage the wheel bearings otherwise.

    A sad reality of fitting larger tires in the pursuit of more ground clearance is the degradation every other performance characteristic. It also changes the geometry of many components placing them outside the engineered specs thereby reducing reliability. Basically when we in the 4WD community do these mods we are assuming that we are smarter than an engineer, so to must we assume the associated risks of such hubris.

      he did that on canning stock, it is an option but you only really save 10kg of the rim and then where do you put the tyre? Plus good luck getting a tyre off and on with just a set of tyre irons.

    Since tires & rims are not resting on the springs & shocks, why should they affect GVW?

    • @gaj5701
      @gaj5701 5 років тому

      The same way you wouldn't attend a diet class weigh-in wearing lead dive boots. Any vehicle weight with a 'G' in front of it refers to Gross weights & is therefore measured at the contact points with ground hence GVM is affected by everything fitted, much like the lead dive boots analogy 👍

    I did a pop top troopy 1998 it had 3 tanks for water the 2 fuel 2 spares a fridge solar and battery's on and on it went....... it's max gvm is 3200 with the 600kg constant load springs it was over buy allot , at the time Qld and NSW were waging a GVM upgrade war and you could not get one so I was curious how you did this?
    I got it under removing a spare and a water tank that was a bladder type in the kitchen cupboard "it's a 90's camper" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so far the springs combined with very large oil dampers work great.

  • @sebastian2357
    @sebastian2357 5 років тому

    I would rather say that you are overloading the vehicle because you carry too much equipment. You have batteries, dual tanks, several gas stoves etc. Spares of a spares of a spares. It is just too much, if you take under consideration to throw up some things that you don't really need it would save a LOT of weight. I always do research before I put something into my car "do I really need it" ? Not because it is expensive (it counts too but not the major reason) but because it add a weight to my car. Sometimes you spending money to save the weight but sometimes you can save the money and weight by just not buying things ;)

      You’re totally correct. I’m guilty as charged because I’m a tart and like the look on my Defender. I also run a Golf R on 18” rims which doesn’t look as good as the 19s but the unsprung weight makes a difference. Luckily, GVM isn’t much of an issue in the UK.
