I was about to buy one of the hanna testers until I learned about the inaccuracy. I removed it from my cart and stuck with my old school refractometer.

I use the first one, and it works fine for me, its not that hard to put water on the lens and clean it, come on man lol

Come on man it’s too much work to take it out of the box and add a drop of water !, We need to just never text at that point too much work!😅

Lies, the Hannah salinity checker has always been wayyyyy off. I bought 2 thinking first one was a bust. Off by a lot. Red sea refractometer seems to be the most accurate.

To be fair - most accurate is a Hydrometer.

I don’t recalibrate my Milwaukee every time I use it, usually I just compare my tank and the new water I’m mixing to make sure they are the same, then maybe every other month I’ll recalibrate.

2nd one for me, never need to calibrate it.

Love the scope not only do i feel like a pirate looking across the horizon. But its easy to use and like he said rarely needs calibration, and its super easy to calibrate. Pro tip just dip in the tank for 4seconds and look through

Honestly, as a vet med professional that uses a refractometer often it was comforting to use something I knew. I won’t lie I do have the Hanna checked at home though

I have all three and was relying on my Hanna salinity tester even after calibrating it monthly the reading was off. I almost nuked my tank as my salinity went up to almost 40. I threw away the Hanna and use the manual refractometer and the Milwaukee tester (calibrated monthly) together at each reading. So far my salt levels have been spot on. Never using the manual Hanna checker again

Why not use the real OG which is gravity based, you know the cheap plastic one? If it’s good enough for field scientists doing conservation work, it’s good enough for me.

Old school is way easier than the Hanna one..

I’m as lazy a reefer as they come and even I am fine with using a piece of tissue to wipe off the refractometer screen😆

Exactly, if dipping a refractometer in water then wiping it with a cloth is to much hassle then reef keep really isn't the hobby for you.

Hanna tester is NG. Gives inaccurate readings even if just calibrated. Get a Tropic Marin hydrometer. It never needs to be calibrated.

How is the first one not user friendly? If anything its the most user friendly... unless youre missing brain cells

How hard is it to put a drop of water on it and look through it near a light source...😢

I would have to disagree with the Hanna being the best option. I had 2 and would recalibrate every use however both broke writhing about 3 months of use.
My refractometer has been the most stable and best Edition to my reefing practice since I have started. I calibrate it every use(and if it sits longer than 30 minutes or there is a temperature change I recalibrate.
The Hanna salinity checker said I was at 1.025 however it was at 1.033 and I lost all my snails and it took 2 months for hermits and corals to become happy again!

For a Aquaruim service tech … I like the OG with the light in it ..the rest is bullshit in my opinion

Why keep refractometer in a case if its a hassle to get out? I just pick up mine from the shelf dip it in a high flow area then wipe with a cloth & find it much faster than the others mentioned here & it's MUCH more reliable than the Hanner.
I know several people who have suffered serious losses due to the Hanner being unreliable.

I easily can get away with not calibrating my Milwaukee for one to two months I mostly do it just for insanity check.

I’ve unfortunately fallen for BRS’s endless preaching about hana checkers.
I like them for a quick glimpse but they are NOT accurate, especially to Salinity checker.
I got a Milwaukee and will NEVER go back. It’s the easiest to use and well well worth the price just for the ease of use.

    Hannah won't last a year

  • @JohnSmith-yf5bk
    @JohnSmith-yf5bk 16 днів тому

Just say you’re being sponsored by Hanna. That was a gross exaggeration of how hard to use a refractometer is. Do you not wipe in the bathroom because that’s too hard as well? 🙄 Come on. Don’t rip off the younger generation of reefers like this. Even a good used refractometer is great, to anyone who reads this. Just cal it.
