That works with different artists' demographics. People who remember Sweet Child o Mine coming out are older and probably have solid jobs. @@brandonsergeon5915 true, but I just don’t feel like the quality is equivalent to how some are priced. I can see myself buying a LP standard in the future, but I would never buy a custom. I don’t think they’re bad or anything, I just don’t need 5 layer binding with a crazy figured maple top. I have a les Paul, but it’s one I built from a kit. I finished it, put quality electronics in it and wired it all myself. It isn’t custom shop quality, but it looks cool, and I’ve got 59 Gibson zebra pickups, that split. I made the guitar with versatility in mind. But that scratched the Gibson itch for the time being. I guess I just prefer fender in all honesty. I go to guitar center, and can pick up even the cheap fender guitars, and still like it. In my personal experience it’s kinda a toss up if a Gibson feels and sounds good.

A sg is single piece body, no binding and they're close to fender prices. Where les Paul standards are carved Maple tops with mahogany bodies with binding so that's a lot of extra steps in the build process so they have to charge more for them. I can't imagine moving "up" to Gibson from Fender. They're both great at what they do but what they do is different. It'd be like moving "up" from needle nose pliers to channel lock pliers. Different tools for different purposes. Yeah, if you had tons of cash but only could have one guitar, a 335 is the best bet hands down because it does everything passably. But it can't really do that Strat-quack thing well, which is just a great sound. Nor can it do that Tele bridge pickup thing (not that a strat can either). 12:52 Rickenbacker discussion. I've owned a 330 since 1987. It was my main stage guitar in a Jam Tribute band until 2021. Looked awesome and it's sound was distinctive. As a tool it was tempermental and finicky and I'd frequently switch to a backup Tele or Strat and enjoy the backup while the Rick was tuned by a tech and then reluctantly go back to the Rick. On a good night it would hold its tune for 3 songs tops or at least be close enough- on a bad night it was a technical distraction. There were more bad nights than good. A full setup and intonation before a gig always helped. Shout out to Marshall and Rotosound :)

Another great subject fellows. My first two prototypes back in 2002 to 2004 where neckthrews and I was not ready so I pulled back. I serviced a lot of Fenders. I built a lot of parts guitars. The best advantage of the bolt on neck guitars is that bodies are like chassies. Worn out necks can be replaced and hardware can be upgraded with ease. As long as a neck pocket is nice and snug and the neck it set properly it performs just as well as a set or neck through. Funny thing is I found this little used 2016 Epiphone Les Paul the other day with a perfect neck and my gears went nuts. I have one of my bodies within 10 hours of being done for it. I think with one of my bodies, a third humbuckers, a six way rotary selector and a couple of CTS 500k pots with a phat orange capacitor it's finna get crazy up in here. The dang thing already had good sustain before I tossed the cheesy lumber slab body. Hey y'all if it sets another sustain record I'm freaking out in da back fourty. See ya.🤠

Jonathan, I gotta say, I went from fender at my very start to Gibson around my late teens early 20’s. I graduated in ‘06 so the big box stores were growing bigger and bigger... they had tons of used gear and really pushed those entry Gibson’s like the faded Sg at 400.00 used. Long story short, I was a LP and Sg player for YEARS. Hit my mid to late 20’s, and I’m back to fender. Almost never play my gibsons since I’ve found the true sounds of a tele and strat. Every time I had played Gibson’s back in the day, I always tried to make them sound like fenders without realizing it. Ya live and learn.

I never heard of Tash Sultana until I saw her signature Fender on youtube. Having watched her bedroom recordings of Jungle & Notion and her Tiny Desk Concert her music has been on high rotation despite it being well outside my usual taste. I do like her guitar tones, so her guitar brought me to the music. If I was going to spend money on signature guitar I'd probably trust a Fender or PRS more quality wise. I have a Epiphone Modern SG which is a great guitar and weirdly don't have any desire to move up to a Gibson SG.

Clean happy Baxter. I started playing bass in May of 2020 for my 50th birthday, and bought a Fender American Pro Jazz that I love. Recently a friend fell on hard times so I bought his 2016 Les Paul. I can now say my bucket list of instruments is almost complete. I just need a Dingwall 5 string, and a white SG Custom with a sideways Vibrola. Also I need to learn how to play guitar. It's different from the bass. Who knew?

With a wide collection I, too, always revert back to the comfort of a Stratocaster. As you've said - probably because it was the first electric guitar I owned. I initially didn't like the Telecaster's headstock so didn't try them until much later. Love 'em now. Your comment that Gibson and Fender were there at the dawn of rock n' roll is true but, interestingly, Rickenbaker was on board long before that...not predominant but do note the Beatles explosion captured them most often with Gretsch and Rickenbaker guitars on stage. There weren't too many events in musical history bigger than Beatlemania. Overall in terms of sheer Fender and Gibson numbers you're probably correct - however two other guitars of historical significance shouldn't be forgotten in my opinion.

To think some don’t know or won’t ever know who Gary Moore is ..wow!
I grew up around hip-hop so now in my thirties I am learning how to play guitar with low vision and Gary Moore is one of my favorites, ever since I heard “still got the blues for you.” I have certainly been cathcing up with Rock which is what truly speaks to my soul! thanx to youtube before I ever even heard of spotify eight years ago I came across that life changing song “still got the blues for you.”
“Still got the blues for you, Parisienn walkways and walking by myself are among the best of the best (just a few examples are there are many more) , doesn’t get better than that. that’s only mentioning one Legendary Icon.
I feel that every guitar has it’s very own characteristics is various ways. Each offering a usable tone. I like to believe in guitars having their own mojo. Weird but I am happy with my belief that for me is true.
May the guitar Goddesses and Gods bless us all with heavenly tones!

6:10 I normally think you guys are right on a lot of things and you’re definitely entitled to your opinion but I’ve just never seen the appeal of Gibson acoustic guitars. Some people seem to like them and if it works for those people that’s great but to say that “everyone who’s everyone plays a Gibson acoustic” is a very flawed statement. As a player and performing musician of a younger generation I think Taylor and Martin have the acoustic game on lockdown. The Taylor grand auditorium cutaway guitars and the Martin dreadnought and OOO acoustic guitar are the industry standards for acoustic guitars. Just like how the strat and the les Paul are basically the industry standard for electric guitars.

I personally am a 000 and small body player. We just watch so many artists start with Taylor and then end up on Gibson’s...even though the Taylor sounds better:) even the young artists we know and love, once Gibson comes knocking, everyone seems to answer that call.
Thanks a ton for sharing your thoughts and I really do appreciate and live to hear where you and the younger players are coming from! Cheers to you and best to you and yours as well!

It has a smooth light action and it holds it's tune really well. Swapping it back stock only takes a half hour. Phil McKnight on Know Your gear does video putting one on his SG.

I think Fender's strategy to encourage new players will pay off in the long run. Gibson's signature series seem to be aimed towards collectors (not that there's anything wrong with that). I think the difference today with keeping interest in guitar, is that there aren’t too many guitar heroes like there were back in the day. There was such a variety of lead guitar players back then and the music was new. Sure there are a lot of modern players today but they really don’t have the same impact as like the Scorpions or Priest. Don’t get me wrong I tend to like new music as opposed to the classics, but my development was rooted in 80’s metal. There were a ton of guitarists back then taking guitar to the next level. Today it’s more like variations of the same thing. Granted there are a few guitarists that take things to a new extreme level. The just aren’t a lot of guitarist that really stand out in a big variety. My first fender was a 25th Anniversary Fender strat which was gold. I stuck a humbucker in the bridge with a chisel.... Lol But I was 16 what the heck did I know!

At the half century mark (Egad) after playing in punk and metal bands as a youth in the U.K., I can heavily identify with the "now I mostly play blues rock wtf" sentiment. Emigrating to Canada 20 years ago had a seismic shift, couldn't afford to bring gear and vinyl so that all went by the wayside; at the time an unsupportive spouse (note to self; invent time machine, address that issue) led to a prolonged break. Coming back to playing I discovered something had fundamentally changed, not just physically as my fingers had aged, but it was a lot harder to tap into the rage and energy (it's still there kids, we just hide it better) of my younger self. Still love loud aggressive music, Periphery were a welcome discovery, but sustaining that in my own playing was tougher. Part of me harkens back to a great revelation I had as a younger player in a music store in Leicester from an older jazz player about a hundred years ago; "if you don't mean it, don't play it" and in truth, on the rare occasion I try playing like that it doesn't feel like I do mean it (notice I didn't say "authentic "). So yeah I'm flailing around in probably hackneyed blues tropes, but a) still playing and b) still loving it! Love the channel guys!

It used to be that a Artist Signature Series meant a model that existed that the artist had modded with something unique, and the company decided to produce that spec on a large scale using the artist's name. Kramer Baretta's were pretty much the original EVH signature model, for example. the JEM was a stock Ibanez with all of Vai's personal touches (monkey grip?). Now it seems, they're all stock models or historic models with a custom paint job. Innovative Sig series are hard to find in the current batch. Although I hate it, the Mayer PRS has been the last "true" signature series in that it innovated on an existing deisgn and is unique in the market.
