      Hey Ryan, very good information in this video. But I want to make sure I understand properly; are you saying that when the heat is high along with high humidity, that you're not going to lose as much soil moisture because of the humidity? And when you mentioned the dew point, does a high dew point at 70 or above mean to water ?? I'd appreciate so I could understand this better because it sounds like a golden nugget of important information . Thanks.

    Yes sir, I was out in my front yard at 5:15am setting up my sprinkler this morning. Moved it around the yard till 11:00am when the temps started to rise. Here in STL forecasting 97 degrees for 3 or 4 days this week and nothing lower than 93. Plays heck on my tall fescue with late morning and full afternoon sunshine on the front yard.
    Looks like I'll be relaxing in my Bark-o-Lounger sipping a cold beer while sucking-up the a/c and keeping an eye out though the living room floor to ceiling window on my fescue. Yes, I knew retiring was going to be a good idea!

    I installed a B-Hyve WiFi enabled smart watering sprinkler controller and it (currently) runs six different watering zones. So far it’s been awesome at watering only as needed depending weather and temperatures.
    This spring I renovated my avenue strip out front of my house and seeded with Ryan Knorr premium rye grass when the soil temps hit 55*F and spread chicken manure compost over it instead of peat moss….. WOW, a few weeks later it’s all super thick, luscious and green! It’s literally the best turf I’ve ever had!
    When I’m out mowing it (literally every other day to keep up with the growth) I actually have people stop and complement how amazing it looks, or give a thumbs up as they drive by.

    It is surprising to see the weather turning so hot in the midwest region already, I'm in the Pacific Northwest area (western WA) and we're still in the 60s to 70s for the next 10 days with only 2 days in the low 80s. Not much rain though, only 1 day of rain so I'm going have to roll out the DIY above ground sprinkler.

    All my neighbors have the incessant habit that grass needs to be mowed weekly. Every single one of them was out there last Sunday cutting their lawns right before the heatwave kicked in. My grass is currently pushing 9-10” tall and is the only one holding on to its green color after a week of hot temps. We have a whole week of mid 90°F coming and I guarantee there will still be people out mowing their brown lawns this afternoon.

    • @Milehi6h
      @Milehi6h 8 днів тому

      While I agree with you overall, it's also a fine line of breaking a major 1/3 rule once you do cut. I did this a few years ago, and overall, I don't think it helped me much unless you're not going to mow till fall. Also, it's much more difficult to water with the height of the grass, and you'll be forced to double or triple cut plus bag all clippings. I definitely back off on the mowing, but it's OK to keep things tidy.

      I mow my lawn twice a week or as needed to not cut more than 1/3 off at one time. I mowed yesterday morning, then used 18-18-18 fertilizer. The temperature here in NJ reached 95 degrees. I’ve been irrigating my lawn heavily in the very early morning & at 3:30 pm. I’m happy to say that my grass is looking incredible! No brown patches or wilting today even though it was 95 again today. 😅

    Does anyone have any recommendations for moisture monitors? I live in Sacramento and am watering Monday, Wednesday, Friday putting down 0.3 - 0.5" of water each time. However, there are still spots that are in the sun all day long that are remaining brown. I have fairly sandy soil so deeper watering doesn't seem to be as beneficial as the ground does not retain moisture like it does with clay. My initial thought was to increase to daily watering for less time as the soil tends to dry out so fast in the dry heat. I would like to use a moisture monitor to test how long the ground remains moist after putting down water, but most of the ones I've found online look cheap and inaccurate or are hundreds of dollars.
