- What are the worst towns to live in Scotland? Those living in Scotland may find it easier to identify with the places we’ll be discussing here as the worst towns in Scotland. For others living in the UK, however, some help might be needed to identify and associate with the condition of those towns. Thus, we shall try to be as fair as possible in describing these worst towns to live in Scotland. If the patriotic fervor is successfully prevented from blurring anyone’s vision, the residents in those towns will readily agree with anyone listing their homes are among the worst places in the UK because they know that as eyewitnesses. You’re encouraged to be objective about those towns described in this video.
10. Elgin
The town of Elgin in the heart of Moray is going to be our starting point. It is a town and formerly a Royal Burgh there. As the administrative and commercial center for the county, Elgin is one of the 10 worst towns in Scotland.
Elgin is on this list because of what those that had been there observed. One of them decried the unimaginable bleakness that absorbs the place regarded as one of the depressing towns in Scotland. Its cathedral is in ruins. there are no quality and decent bars and restaurants in the town. A reviewer advised that you can only get a semblance of that at Aberlour where you can, at least, drink something bearing some semblance to a decent whisky.
9. East Kilbride
The next of the 10 worst towns to live in Scotland is East Kilbride, the largest town in South Lanarkshire. The town lies on a raised plateau in an area to the south of the Cathkin Braes which is about 8 miles southeast of Glasgow. It is also close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire.
We have to admit that it’s not everyone in East Kilbride that’ll agree that their town is one of the worst towns to live in. Either due to complacency or modesty, they seem to have everything they need and their chances of living in the town are close to nil. However, the aggression and intolerance of criticism are the banes of this town. If you can consider that an adventure, you’ll be content with seeing East Kilbride where drunken thugs after 9 pm bumble through a web of roads as they try to locate their home.
8. Falkirk
Falkirk, a large town in the Central Lowlands of the country, is also one of the worst towns to live in Scotland. The town that was historically within the county of Stirlingshire lies in the Forth Valley. It’s about 23 miles northwest of Edinburgh and 20 miles northeast of Glasgow.
In Scotland, Falkirk is considered the ned capital. You should avoid any derogatory comment here; only those living in Scotland will appreciate the fact that this 21st most populous settlement in Scotland lacks civility. Visitors say they’re pissed off by the heap and tacky bling being brandished in the city. If you care about decorum and civility, you will agree with those who labeled this town one of the worst in Scotland. Their dressing is out of this world and the parents seem to have conceded the control of the kids to themselves as they display their indecent idiosyncrasies.
7. Coatbridge
The next one of the worst towns in Scotland is Coatbridge, a town in North Lanarkshire which is about 8 miles east of Glasgow city center. The town set in the central Lowlands, with neighboring Airdrie, is a part of the Greater Glasgow urban area. The earliest known settlers in the area came around the Stone Age era while the actual founding of the town is traceable back to the 12th century.
Here’s a town where one of the local junkies could just accost you and utter or mutter some undecipherable words when they just want a smack. Every evening can be nightmarish in Coatbridge with their special version of English they speak as they swagger and grunt at each other. You’re likely to feel like the odd one out on social gatherings when you see everyone with a bottle of cider or something stronger, firmly gripped in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

The moment Elgin even made the worst list I gave up taking is video seriously. It's bleak and good luck getting decent food (especially in lockdown, christ) but it is pretty and calm and the fact it got put over Rutherglen, Saltcoats, Kilmarnock, Johnstone, Livingstone, even Kirkintilloch deserved to be in over Elgin

Unless this video is satire at its worst, then this guy has just made a random video about all the wee places outside of Glasgow, without looking at the actual demographics of each place. He’s taken his pre conceived ideas of what he thinks the population of Scotland is like, either from stereotypes or just a pure dislike of Scottish people. Scotland like everywhere has some dismal towns of course it does, but it’s also got some very beautiful towns, and you’ll find that most people here are hard working and decent. Not junkies or robbers as you say. It’s easy to find information about a locality without having to make it up. Have a look at the place standard tool for more information on small towns. Doing some research before making a video makes all the difference.
I recognise quite a few of the lines he used from a thing I saw where people from various towns were trying to make comedic reviews of their own towns in the most scathing way. I'm sure someone from anywhere can pick out the worst things from their town, ignore the positives and make the place sound rubbish.
The only thing proven here is that these towns have some comedians in them.

It has a small village close to where i live. The villages name is Fordyce, its a nice wee village, no junkies or robbers, no crime actually. The primary school there is a lovely school, it has no bullys. And we also have Cornhill another wee village, a nice place too, the primary school there does have bullys. Over all Scotland is beautiful, some town, citys and villages may be better than others but most of the places are really cool and we just have to learn to appreciate that.
Elgin has a better library and museum than where I live in Inverness, and Cooper Park can be lovely in summer. The Cathedral is an ancient ruin due to various disasters that happened to it in its ancient past. It is a tourist attraction and virtue, the compilers don't seem to get history. Also Elgin has nearby countryside and is situated in great travelling distance of many other local attractions, beaches and amenities. Maybe in itself not one of the finest places to live in Scotland, if you are on a housing estate. Still compared to many others, Glenrothes, industrial towns etc, I can't figure out why it's even made it into the list?

How do you define 'worst' ? You describe worst place to live in Scotland? Then you place Elgin as number 10 on comments from people that visited there ? Really? If it was the 10th worst to visit then that might be fair , but living there would include cost of living , services, amenities, air quality, climate, environment, and lot's of other qualities? Mike Ryan has it absolutely correct which suggests a lack of research on the part of Learning Canteen. The opening scene in this and another of the ‘Worst’ videos shows Oban which isn’t mentioned in either so presumably doesn’t fit into this category but the video title suggests it does. Makes it hard to consider these videos objective.

Elgin shouldn't be on this list - cathedral city with access to beautiful coastlines (I mean stunning - people are amazed by the Moray coast whenever they visit) and gold sandy beaches which offer the best surfing and windsurfing in Scotland outside of Thurso, loads of history in Moray, it is the whiskey county of Scotland, beautiful nature walks all over, good access to Cairngorms, furthermore a quaint town centre and most importantly the area with the least rainfall across the entirety of Scotland! For people who need 20 different bars on their doorstep they will be disappointed but there is more to life than getting rat arsed in a pub on a rainy night in Glasgow.
I would never live on the west coast as it rains constantly, Edinburgh is too expensive, and Aberdeen is soulless - the Highland / Moray area is the best kept secret in Scotland for quality of life.

Elgin is a charming historical town with enterprising local businesses, an abundance of natural beauty, and a strong sense of community. For those who appreciate a quieter life, surrounded by nature and with easy access to other parts of rural Scotland. Is Elgin a nice place to live? It is indeed.

His awful mispronunciation undermines his comments - you know he's never heard of (let alone been to) any of these places - not that it's a serious review anyway. Personally, if someone says something negative about Scotland I tend to get triggered, (as most Scots do I think) but yeah, fair enough, some points hit the mark. It would be better if he shared his OWN experience rather than making anecdotal videos of what 'he's heard'.
As an Englishman who's been to Bonnie Scotland many times over the last 30 odd years I find this video laughable, yeah you can find plenty of not so nice places in every country if you look for them, and how the hell is Elgin in the top 10!!, For me personally it is one of the nicest parts of the country.

I wouldnt use the word "worst". Yes some towns, citys and villiages may be better than others, but theyre not the "worst" they just have bad people, good towns,citys and villiages have good people, better the people, better the town, city or villiage. This goes for every country, not just Scotland. Also i have been to most of these towns, and they are fantastic. I went to Falkirk, to see the kelpie statues and the Falkirk Wheel. The experience was amazing. Also how does this have 212 likes??? This is stupid, this video is completely bonkers, not only that this is not true, its making tourists not want to go to those towns.

I live in Greenock, and I actually used to live in the most deprived part.
All I can say is. I'm 27, never been involved in any capacity with the law. I moved to Greenock when I was 26. No problems before that. Couple months living in Greenock, and boom. A court date due to junkie knife wielding maniacs.
But better yet, the council instead of improving the area, waste funds on vanity projects and making sure people don't use the term "junkie" them blame the UK GOV for not giving enough funding to the area.
Also. Its home to some of the worst roads I've driven on. Also people love to molotov each other here.

Much difference between Greenock and Gourock? For that matter does Dunoon share in crime and dilapidation, or does the Clyde separation help insulate? I'm considering retiring to the Cowal peninsula or points west.

Dunoon is completely different as is Kirn/Innellan etc. A lot quieter now the US Navy has gone but still the favourite address of sex offenders appearing at Greenock Sherriff Court. Don't listen to Dean up above. He's probably got some whiney English accent that the locals took exception to. He claims to "live in Greenock" when anyone actually from the place would say stay rather than live as a convention of the Scots Leid.

Good houses, good facilities like parks and sports facilities.
I'm on a weekly basis looking at houses in Gourock in envy.
Good places to retire are the bottom area of Gourock towards Largs (the houses there are unbelievable. Very very nice view of the Clyde and mountains).
As someone from Airdrie I was shocked and appalled that we were not on the list and mentioned only as being next to Coatbridge, it's as bad if not worse. Really the whole of North Lanarkshire is pretty much a shit hole.
Both towns often get lumped together though I've always thought Airdrie to be a bit worse. At least the Brig has some nice suburbia near the town centre, and one of it's roughest schemes (Sikeside) is right by Airdrie! They're still better than Holytown or Bellshill.

And East Kilbride, Motherwell, Cumbernauld and Falkirk aren't meant to be nice places, they're meant to be dormitory towns for bigger cities. This is obviously not from personal knowledge and is a completely uneducated view of the places mentioned.
Granted, there are many places in Scotland which are not pleasant, as there are in most countries, but the Scottish people are, as a rule, some of the friendliest you will find. They are certainly not all thugs and drunks.
Cumbernauld isn't pretty in places, but it's not "scary". It's nothing like as bad as nearby places like Airdrie and Coatbridge. Glasgow is probably the "scariest" place to live in Scotland.

I lived - CUMBERNAULD, BATHGATE, INVERNESS, GLASGOW, EDINBURGH, LIVINGSTONE, DUNFERMLINE, COUPAR ANGUS, ABERDEEN, STIRLING, COATBRIDGE, DUNDEE (from 6 mount till 2 years) and SH*T place is NUMBER 1 of coarse - CUMBERNAULD, second is ABERDEEN and third - LIVINGSTONE

I have been to all the places on this list. but I do think there may be other places that are worse.
Greenock is for shops not as bad as Gourock. And Falkirk at least has some places of interest. the wheel and the kelpies.
nu 1 - is a weird place although the shops are all indoors they are on different levels, and there can be a long walk between them.
it is a giant block of concrete with zero style. really to say that the shops are on both side of a main road and you are taken over it without seeing it. the shopping has no logic to it.
Any town can have problems with drink and drugs. also beggar's. if its based on that than Glasgow would be number 1.
I would bring up Maypole as a dirty place to be the main street with dirty windows due to the trucks going down it as a place for this list.

I've lived on Cumbernauld all my life & there's many places worse off than my home town like Airdrie Coatbridge Motherwell that truly are shitholes.
No I think Hamilton is the lowest and most dreaded place . Fairhill was voted murder capital at on time and Whitehill , Hillhouse and Eddlewood are not very nice . Iwould say Eddlewood being the ok one to live in out of all of the housing areas .
I'm not sure that Hamilton should be judged by Fairhill any more than Bristol should be judged by St Paul's.

It's the Valleys after all where Welsh was first banned and the revival of the language is even today not accepted there.

Only a few cities - and only 2 major cities, but plenty of small to medium sized towns. Very few of them have anything to offer any visitors.
Cumbernauld as number one is laughable. The Town Centre is awful, but it has lots of really nice areas. It is by far the best place in all of Lanarkshire ffs.
Having it below Paisley, Greenock, Larkhall etc is absolutely ridiculous.
Really? You're placing Cumbernauld above, say, Hamilton or Bothwell?
I agree, however, that Larkhall should have had a place on the list. So should Stevenston. And Bathgate is no treat.
Methil is the pits even worse than Buckhaven.
