8 Worst Towns to Live in Northern Ireland
Вставка

- Let us put it in the right context before we take it so far. The expression “worst towns” here is going to be subjective and relative. This is because Northern Ireland is a generally good place to live. Regardless of how good a region is, however, some parts of it will be better than others. On the other hand, those parts of the region that are not regarded as the best are in that context not so good. And if all of the parts of a region are just good, the “least good” among them is invariably the worst. It is in that sense that we now want to show you the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
8. Ballymena
Let’s begin with Ballymena, a large town in County Antrim. The town with a population of more than 29,000 is the 8th-largest town in the region by population. But it’s also one of the worst towns to live in Northern Ireland. Gone are those days when the town was prosperous and when a lot of factories were providing job opportunities.
The town has now suffered from a gripping recession that not only deterred investment in manufacturing but also stressed out existing shopping centers. Though some attempts have been made to rejuvenate the town economically, the unemployment rate is still very high. The shopping centers are no longer bustling as they used to be due to badly reduced purchasing power and low demands in the town. Besides, there are several rough areas such as Harryville in the town. Generally, the town that hosts 7 towers lacks prosperity, though it’s one of the safest places to live for people with legitimate business dealings.
7. Lurgan
Lurgan is another large town on this list. It is in County Armagh near the southern shore of Lough Neagh. The town is located about 18 miles southwest of Belfast having been linked together by the M1 motorway. Additionally, the Belfast-Dublin railway line serves this town with a population of 28,634 within the Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon districts.
Even then, it is one of the worst towns. It is divided along the religious line, no thanks to the housing anomaly. This is especially apparent in its worst part. Many of the people born in the town would prefer not to live there if they are not landlords. Houses there are usually up for buying to own not to rent. That is why it’s not a good place to live in Northern Ireland for foreigners. You will get rental areas only on Ardboe Drive and Trasna Way. But in Pollock Drive and Grey Estate, you’re in for a completely different experience.
6. Strabane
We’re now in County Tyrone to find the town named Strabane. Lying on the east bank of the Foyle River, it had a population of 13,172. It is located roughly midway from Omagh, Derry, and Letterkenny. Strabane is also on this list of the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
Strabane has remained stuck to that unpopular tag not only in NI but also in the UK as a whole. For instance, out of 317 local authority areas in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it is the 8th worst to live, according to the research carried out by Channel 4. The research measured 5 criteria homebuyers always consider namely crime, education, employment, environment, and lifestyle. The town performed woefully in all of them. It has been ranking badly for livability for years on end.

When talking about Strabane why show a "Welcome to Holywood " a town that is 80 miles away in County Down???
Hollywood is in Co Down. They do not make movies there.
@@davidreid8290 The Correct spelling is HOLYWOOD not Hollywood. This is translation of the Norman name viz Sanctus Boscus. The Irish name is Ard Mhic Nasca.
Nearly everything you say about Lurgan is completely false, the only factually correct thing you say is that it's on the M1 and part of the Belfast to Dublin rail line, as for the comment about "foreigners" not being welcome, my next door neighbour of 15 years is Czech, and I've got neighbours from Bulgaria, East Timor, Poland among other countries, and they're perfectly content here, Lurgan isn't Beverly Hills, but at least get your facts right before bullshitting about it......or some of the other places on your list.
Well said, I'm from antrim Town, my best friend in school was from Africa, nobody else wanted to be his friend, but I didn't care what they thought, live and let live
Well I stop in lurgan anytime Im in N lreland. Ive two brothers who married two local girls and are rearing young families there now.. The people are the salt of the earth and very welcoming and friendly.Your giving people a bum steer with your post! Im a Dublin man and Im proud to have friends and family from lurgan as theyre a close knit community and very social.❤❤
Your statement is not true sir, I'm a traveler from Johannesburg living in Lurgan here on work. The people aren't "friendly" to foreigners especially unless they have pink skin. And I'm just here to do work local lads don't want to do. I'm not taking anything away from anyone but still get treated like a terrorist.
I think the people of Northern Ireland make the best of a bad thing, having lived in Cheshire England for 21 years. I'm glad I'm home now.😊
Some nonsense talked in this video. There is a lot worse places than the towns named
Like thousands of Council estates in England and Scotland.
As an American, I am planning on going to Northern Ireland. I don’t believe any of this content. I think it is a very beautiful place and I can’t wait to see it. ❤️
It doesn't look any worse than the Isle of Wight! One feels that the problems you refer to are similar in any geographically remote location. The housing does not look too bad, certainly no worse than Shanklin or Cowes! Thanks for uploading.
Went to Portavogie once. It was Sunday and I didn't see another human being but had the distinct impression that the windows were all staring at me. The only thing missing was a tumbleweed. Very strange. Got stoned (with stones) in Kilkeel in my southern reg car.
They were probably on there lovely beach which you never noticed.
@@douglasdodds8490on a Sunday ? In Portavogie ? Never !
I’m from Tyrone and was wearing my Tyrone jersey in kilkeel one time and some old man who I think was drunk called me a fenian cunt lmao
Good joke.
I've been to N.I. numerous times and what I remember vividly , when chatting in a pub, a guy said , to me , if they try and build a mosque here , we'd burn the fking thing down.
Which curiously made me feel very safe.
If only your photos matched the areas you are spouting about aka mixing photos of L/Derry with Lurgan for one example severaL times. Larne has not a large paramilitary presence. Where are you getting you information?
Not sure where you're getting yours. Larne is constantly on the local news and 80% of the time it's in connection with paramilitary activity/ crime.
well a normal person going about their day to day business isn't running into any.@@seandoherty925
Lough Neagh is pronounced Nay. The Craigavon Bridge that you showed under Craigavon is in Derry / Londonderry, not Craigavon. Ballymena's high profile MP has a lot to answer for, fun fact he lives in Banbridge.
Fun fact: it's just Londonderry
@@geordiewishart1683 fun fact: The name Derry (Doire) came first
Yeah city of Derry, in the county of Derry.
digestic
@@geordiewishart1683fun fact, Orange Order there are called Apprentice boys of Derry.
I’m from Belfast. Everyone here and as far as you can go in anti, agree about Larne. Craig Avon was a place to send all the criminals and people ejected from their home place who were ‘undesirables’. Bit like a penal colony.
I think Limavady and Crumlin have that edge too (of being places for people exiled from Belfast) and certain estates of Downpatrick - it's a funny bit of history that I'd certainly forgotten about.
@@ElendilAndAragorn Limavady might be more for Derry ones. Crumlin is full of exiled westies.
A bit mixed up. Shots of (London)derry interspersed with several of these towns. Terrible pronounciation of Lough Neagh. 'C- , must do better. See me after school.'
Meant the videos are not reflective of reality.
Strabane has great people in it. They deserve better.
No they don't
@@geordiewishart1683it's a canny place. My family come from there and it's 95% mad decent people and 5% mad not decent people..
My grandad loves Uncle Hugo as he's from Strabane
Searching for generic images for your video in relation to Craigavon wasn't the best idea. Half of them were of Craigavon Bridge in Londonderry. At least you didn't search for roundabouts and get pictures of Milton Keynes 😂
Who made this video? They obviously aren't from Northern Ireland. It absolute nonsense!!!
Sure the dude can not speak English correctly (if you listen carefully), so do not be so surprised that he is unable to pronounce the Gaelic place names (this is much more obvious in the video) in the 6, or anywhere on the Island, or Scotland for that matter.
wrong picture of James Craig?!
Spot on, Larne is a total dump, Craigavon has so many roundabouts everyone who lives there is disorientated and many towns like Carrickfergus are spoilt by drugs and bums roaming the streets.
Carrick tends to have these so-called hairy-arsed 'paras' who know more about getting scared single mothers into keeping their drugs (for them) rather than 'fighting for good'.
I recently found out that my G G Grandfather was from Larne, and he left for the USA in 1850 when he was 14.
I hope to visit Larne someday. Greetings from California.😎
lets not forget that Craigavon was the creation of the British government a so-called new town and is an urban planning disaster. It started in the 70s as an attempt to amalgamate Lurgan and Portadown and failed miserably.
@Learning Canteen - why, at the start of this video (your preamble, before you begin your countdown) of the worst places to live in Northern Ireland, do you have several photographs of Portstewart??!!! One of the nicest places to live ANYWHERE on this planet!! As Frazer Spence has rightly pointed out, this makes it clear you have, very likely, never set foot in our beautiful little country.
"Beautiful little country"? You write like you watch too much Stephen Nolan. Sorry for that accusation :)
(Borrowing from W.C.Fields), I spent 14 years living in Ballymena - i think it was a Sunday......
Dungiven just got a bypass. Great for the town.
And even better for those wishing to avoid it.
Apart from an up-and-coming football team, there's no reason to go near Larne it's a shame because it has potential even in the 90s I remember it being an ok place for shopping.
Fun fact: Liam Neeson was born in Ballymena
Got out as quick as he could.
Ballymena should now be a Holy place.
If you are going to kidnap someone,s daughter in Ballymena, think twice.
I too was born there, but left as a teenager..I want to visit but I'm worried it might have turned into a multicultural pit like London.
@@davidgalea6113 This sounds quite intolerant. Not what I expected from the friendly Irish
I'm surprised you didn't nominate Belfast. Perhaps because it's a large city you didn't. I haven't been in it for about twenty five years but last night I looked at a walking tour of it on UA-cam and I was totally shocked. The city centre is now full of coffee shops and all the once lovely classy shops are gone. And to make things worse there are so many shops and businesses shuttered and boarded up. Very sad and depressing.
The supermarket car parks are full of cars with Irish Republic number plates . Brexit ?
Agree, Belfast is a dump. Don't go near it now.
Go into Belfast city centre on a Sunday morning about 12.30 before shops open it looks like a 3rd world country with the added bonus of junkies roaming about
@@readmylisp😂😂😂 funny was on the radio yesterday that people from n.i are going south for there shopping someone is talking 💩
Belfast is actually a tourist destination now. Weekend trips, cruiseships, conferences, stag and hen does?
My auntie lives out side of Bally Clare in Ollar valley would that be good
Love going to Ballymena where the shops are brilliant - have you ever been?
Kilkeel suffers a lot from having superior neighbouring towns
But just mostly for being a sectarian hole!
I bet the Kilkeelies love that comment.
Even though it is true
😊 I love Kilkeel ( excellent chip shop )
Got as far as Ballymena and if the rest of the video is as deceptive then it doesn't bode well.. The first image shown is very old and that street is now a bustling mostly pedestrianised area, then the delipidated old bandstand that was replaced years ago with a modern sculpture and outdoor seating area. Then the old chapel in Harryville that was demolished decades ago. 3 mistakes in under 30 seconds is impressive!
What a load of nonsense the Man has not got clue
Certainly not the way Neagh is pronounced plus the typical way people outside the area pronounce Tyrone. Probably close enough with the town order though some photos were a bit random.
I am from just outside Belfast. I have to say a very interesting vid. You were right in explaining the meaning of Worst for this Vid at the start.
Very well put across, I am now a subscriber, Keep up the good work. M.
Antrim if you blink you've missed it. More interested in building houses than commercial propertys. Shopping is bad
i think my town is deadly to live in as there is a record shop above an ice cream shop that sells parma violet ice cream id have liked to have visited kilkeel one day i was in new castle last summer and at Tollymore forest and yet me and him that poor we couldnt afford fuel to get from newcastle to kilkeel and he was earning 17pounds an hour and i was working 2 jobs
You missed Downpatrick, that’s an awful town, glad to get out of it!
mrantgarshall3026
Glad to see the back of you too !!!!
And Bangor
Downpatrick just floods alot
Can't argue with these choices! And everyone knew Larne would be no.1, even the people from Larne!
The coastal scenery around Larne looks nice .
I thought it would be Bangor, tbh
I recently found out that my G G Grandfather was from Larne, and he left for the USA in 1850 when he was 14.

Yes it had to b larne absolute.
Larne has one good advantage, the 🚢 out of it 😅😅
Im surprised castlederg wasnt in this list.
This is the classic example of having opinion on something you know little or nothing about❌
I take great exception to this video. Northern Ireland is a beautiful place to live and it’s people are the most welcoming on earth. By all means come and visit the place first then give a knowledgeable opinion. Not something you read on google ‼️
All looks fabulous to me !!
Sounds like you haven’t been to any of them then 🤡🤡🤡
@@davida7713lived in Sligo for a fair while, know Ireland very well, my maiden name is Kelly, so we go back a few generations!!!!!!!😊
He’s talking about Craigavon but shows a picture of Derry, I used to live in Craigavon from 1975 to 1982 and yes it was a Shithole. By the way it’s pronounced Lough Nay not Loch Neaugh
The air quality in Dungiven could be vastly improved if the locals kept their windows and doors closed 😂
I had to open the window when your ma called.🙄😂
The comments about Ballymena are wrong and out of date. The place is not economically deprived, in fact it is bustling. Unemployment is very low and many Immigrants from Eastern Europe have settled in the town. ( Ballymena has the largest Polish population in NI outside of Belfast.) The standard of housing is good and prices are affordable. As the saying goes if you know a better hole go to it.

Not as high up as Bangor for certain 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@normiron736 Agree 👍 POND
Newtownards wipes the floor with Bangor. Looked round Bangor lately...boarded up shops in the main street and homeless people sleep in the doorways. Half of Queens Parade missing for nearly 2 decades. Hilarious it was awarded city status. Newtownards thriving, busy town centre. Try and buy a house there, even with huge private development ongoing, people queuing up to get in. Newtownards is doing very well thanks 💪

Kilkeel a loyalist enclave which has ruined it, I visit the seating factory there a few times a year, we decided to give the local hotel some trade as all the visitors stay in Warrenpoint or Newcastle unfortunately for us it was on the 11th of July NEVER again it was toxic.
Hi there seen your comment. Did you head down into the field and mix with the locals? It's a very different event from what we are used too but we had a fantastic time. People couldn't have been nicer and it was a great evening.

Do you ever look into history and see why certain towns are the way they are? Kilkeel is the result of ethnic cleansing all along the border area. Newry,Warrenpoint,Rostrevor and Hilltown all had large Protestant communities at a time and they were driven from those towns and many families moved to Kilkeel.
Just 8 ?
Carrickfergus, Glengormley, Comber and Bangor should’ve made the list.
Only half way through (Strabane man) but had to comment on Craigavon. Showing an image of Craigavon bridge in Derry leads one to the conclusion, that this video is bollocks ;-)
You forgot Banbridge
All better than Brussels.

Mate, I hate larne I live there actually and there is nothing there. I ask anyone who like the town to name 10 good things about it. If that is possible I will be mind blown
I’m from Kilkeel and it’s a deadon in a sense if some weren’t so bitter and had less flegs flying. Nuff foreigners live there so you’re wrong bout that.
Ballymena is a nice wee town. It’s small but close to other bigger towns.
“ Remember there are two sides to every coin”
Proceeds to bash NI only taking about negative points.

Lisburn town status just a joke
The mall is empty and no nightclubs in it the best thing about it is the bud out of it

Why do so many English people pronounce Northern Ireland as Northern Island. Is it just laziness or ignorance or both...
Don't agree brought up in lurgan, great place
Are you pissed? Great place 😂😂😂😂
Thought they'd choose Portadown above it.
Just wonder why you have Ballymoney on your list , but nothing your video.
Where is Ballymoney mentioned?
Ahh, I see it now in the chapters list. Obviously mixed it up with Ballymena. Not surprising after his pronunciation of Lough Neagh, the biggest lough/lake in the British isles.
@@elemar5 ok yes I am from Ballymoney but i live on Vancouver Island I do get home quite often , I would never think of Ballymoney on a list of worst towns , for sure its gone through some rough times , but a very friendly town .

Supporting the crown is paramilitary 😂😂😂
The only thing I like about your video is the fact I can report it
Larne isn't great but I'd say Kilkeel and Lurgan should be higher
No way... I think the only people not considering Larne the shittiest place in Norn Iron are the people from Linn Road...
My wife and I have been traveling all around the north for years now and in my opinion I totally disagree with this list.
We stay in Kilkeel for a few days each year and I've found it to be one of the most welcoming and kind people. We even attended the 11th of July evening events. Which to my surprise was a fantastic night. The locals couldn't have been kinder and I even seen young ladies with their local Gaelic football stripes to my shock however they seemed to be really enjoying the evening. The views when walking around the town and along the seafront are breathtaking.
Likewise I'd say much of the same with dungiven. Some of the most lovely people I've had the pleasure of meeting. The castle is also a fantastic piece of the town. Look forward to heading there each year.
Likewise with Strabane and I could go on with many others. Hopefully whoever made this video will brighten up.

You should really learn to pronounce some more of the place names properly for a start. This has been put together by someone eho clearly hasn't lived in Northern Ireland at all.
I thought all town's in NI were depressing
Dungiven,
Just wait till Joe Brolly catches up with you. How dare you slander Dungiven.

I didn't know there were eight towns in Northern Ireland
In Northern Ireland, the towns and cities are ugly but the landscape is beautiful.
When you can't even pronounce the names of the towns right and show wrong images in the wrong towns, it shows how unreliable and biased your research is. Absolute rubbish.

Lurgan and Lough whaaat! 😂
Quite right about Dungiven. It's a shit hole
Very poor research!
I think you need a photographer who doesn’t photograph gable walls, and footpaths beside parked cars etc. We have stunning scenery over here. 4 photos of Derry/ Londonderry were shown in relation to other towns. These videos from Learning kitchen are reflective of reality
It's all Google images. Did you not catch on when he had pics of Craigavon Bridge in Londonderry whilst talking about Craigavon.
Anyone who understands and knows NI can pronounce Strabane properly. You can't.
I always thought that the people in Northern Ireland are one of the friendlies people in all UK. Now reading the comments here i have change my mind, looks like and in this country the racism is very popular as in the rest of UK.Pity really.
