I am fortunate enough to have Bob as one of my business partners today. One of the nicest men you could possibly meet. Humble, respectful, brilliant at what he does both on and off the field. It was a privilege to watch him play rugby albeit I would’ve liked to see him play more. It’s an even greater privilege to be in business with him.
That's a brilliant story, Stephen. Thank you for sharing! I'd love to stay in touch with you too ... if you don't mind, may I have your email address ... or any other way I can get hold of you please?
His dad was my Doctor and a very nice guy, and Bobby went to my school. So... he's from a time I remember. Nothing is simple in life, and I believe Springboks give it their all. Thanks man.
Always admired Bob's ability on & off field... one of the most talented loose-forwards ever and great ambassador for Springbok rugby & rugby in general.
Bob Skinstad lost the 1999 World Cup for us, if it wasn't for him and playing so well as an impact player, Gary Teichmann would've still been captain in 1999.
If he wasn't so good, we wouldn't have lost Got it. 🙄 We lost 1 game to an awesome Oz team, by a late drop kick. We crow about being great when we win by a point but call players crap when we just lose by 1.
Great interview again Peter. I was fortunate enough to produce the audio visual hype with the Stormers Men in Black campaign, as well as for Western Cape Tourism (they were ambassadors) and the day we overran Ratanga Junction on a Sunday the day before schools opened (ie the most people ever to attend the theme park on one day) My wife used to say, I'll watch the rugby with you on TV, but I have to put on lipstick if Bob is playing (yeah, he personally likes to be called Bob and not Bobby) Love your channel !!
Thanks Etienne! Yes, that Men in Black era was great ... I was in high school in 1999 and you can just imagine how enjoyable it was for my friends and I. Interesting one on the Bob/Bobby matter. So before we began I asked him what he would prefer and he said either one is fine. At that point I referenced the Men In Black and WP's 1997 Currie Cup win and told him to people like me he'll always be "Bobby". Love the story about your wife and the lipstick! Really appreciate the kind words on my channel! Cheers and have a great 2025!
Nice to hear Skinstad giving Rassie credit for building the team across many barriers, highlighting the drama from management. Ive said many times, 99 RWC loss was the stupid disruption changing the leader going into the tournament. The benefit of Siya remaining captain in 2023 RWC displays the lesson learnt by Rassie from that mistake in 99. And yes, those Boks are under huge pressure against the best in the world, sometimes it just does not go to plan, what has changed is they don’t go down without a big fight late in the game.
I agree, Larry. Bobby is a great guy and brought great wisdom to this discussion. Many lessons learnt and I've said it myself, if Teich had been retained in 1999 I think we would have gone all the way. But sadly we'll never know.
I was at that 99 world cup game and we got knocked out fair and square by a freak drop goal in that semi, and Bobby actually played pretty well. That's rugby, we have often won rugby by drop goals and rugby is 10% luck as Danie Craven said, the ball is not round. So us as Bokke must not blame individual players when we lose, it hurts - but that's the game. I don't know why people don't like him, he was a brilliant springbok. Also most of us have played rugby, and it's the coach that chooses the team, its not your fault that you get chosen as a player. Don't blame player for getting chosen. I was a big Gary fan but remember to be fair he was also injured in 99 and was not playing that well. AJ Venter was playing the game of his life; he should have gone. That world cup was just not to be, Honiball got injured, Brendan Venter got banned, it just went all wrong, out whole axis in the backline was destroyed, and that's why Mallet went for the drop kick strategy. Very good coaching. It's a pity, one freak 65 meter drop goal put us out, otherwise we would have won. Just think about 2023? Three games in a row by one point? It's not always going to go for you. Thats the nature of the game.
What an experience to have been there in 1999, Francois! Yes, it was the finest of margins and we'll never know if it might have turned out different had Gary been the captain. In a way that's what makes it fun to discuss and debate. Personally I can tell you I loved Bobby as a player. In fact around 2000/01 he was my favourite player.
That's very kind of you, Marelize. Thank you and I appreciate it! Don't worry about the support and viewership numbers. I'll keep doing what I'm doing and I'm confident it will grow and get to those bigger numbers!
I surprised that some people make hateful comments; "can't stand him", all show etc, if that was the case, why ever selected and involved in brilliant Bok tries etc? Ignorant comments never fail to disappoint me!
Hi Mike, Yeah, I'm not impressed by some of it myself to be honest. I sometimes wonder, why not just keep quiet? That said in the interest of free speech and dialogue I keep most of the stuff up but when it becomes racist or personally insulting then I remove it.
I remember Bobby Mania well! I think what should have happened was Bobby remaining as an impact player in 1999 with Teich as the captain. Then Teich would have retired and Bobby would have become the starting eighthman in 2000.
Yeah but Bobby was playing unbelievable rugby he was probably the most dynamic loose fwd in the world @ the time personally I feel Nick Mallett had no choice finding a gap for him
Still never seen a loose forward play as skilled and with as much speed as him. Like Sasha he was on his own level but understandably rushed. Similarly, I think we all need to take a chill pill with Sasha. Gradually build him up.
Bobby had one of the best seasons ever ..98 was his absolute peak going into 99..then thr Canterbury post match scuffle happened and the accident..never reached those dizzy heights and was mediocre at best after the injury.
Correct me if I’m wrong , Bobby eventually became a world champion on 2007 coming in for a cameo in the final ? Great player and it was a tough time to be on the bench in the late 90s, interesting he mentioned Rassie as someone who may have learnt from that time on how to use substitutes Makes a lot of sense As always , wonderful interview We get closer to these players thanks to your interviews
You are exactly right. He helped us win the 07 RWC but he didn't actually get to come on in the final. I asked him about that at the end - did you miss that part? Please don't tell me you skipped it! ;-) Glad you enjoyed it and as always thank you so much for the support!
Cheers Jacques. I always try to be as authentic as I can be. I believe people can easily tell when you are being fake. Yes, I'm a trained journalist but this is also how I am. If I had to start trying to be funny for example I'm sure you'd immediately pick up that it's all an act. Someone else also once told me to be more "blokey" but I told him the truth is I'm a bit of a nerd. What you see on the camera, is how I am in real life. I'm not the life of the party but I'd like to believe I'm a good guy to have as a friend! I'll keep trying to make great videos for you!

Hey, my man. I always try to be as authentic as I can be. I believe people can easily tell when you are being fake. Yes, I'm a trained journalist but this is also who and what I am. If I had to start trying to be funny for example I'm sure you'd immediately pick up that it's all an act. 2000-2003 wasn't great at all but at least we had the odd decent result like that win over the All Blacks at Ellis Park in 2000 and we beat and drew against the Wallabies in 01. There was also that nice win over them in 02 when Werner Greeff scored right at the end. But that was pretty much all there was to cheer! And then then the Allister years were a disaster, as you say. We had a nice series win over France but other than that it was very, very bleak.
Hi Stephen. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video and leave a comment so I'm also going to try to explain something to you. I could make the best video ever but if no one watches it then it will mean nothing. Similarly someone could make a terrible video but has a great thumbnail or title and manages to get millions of people to watch it! UA-cam's algorithm then thinks that my videos suck and recommends my stuff to fewer people. If that happens then my channel will never grow. So what I'm trying to do is create enticing thumbnails and titles - I accept that they might be a little theatrical here and there but that's how this game is played, for better or for worse. I think I make really nice videos that people enjoy watching but I have to also be able to get people to click on them to start watching in the first place. Hope that makes sense to you.

Suffered against Bob all the way through school. He was on another level and it was a privilege to witness even as he made us look silly.
Very cool story!
Great interview with Bobby, always well spoken. Pity his injuries and other off field issues limited his time with the Boks.
Thanks, Trevor. Glad you enjoyed it! Great player - he was a favourite of mine at one stage.

Don't blame him, it was mallets decision....
Got to give credit to a great Australian team who won it in extra time. The semi-final could have gone either way and Larkham was the difference.
If he wasn't so good, we wouldn't have lost
Got it. 🙄
We lost 1 game to an awesome Oz team, by a late drop kick.
We crow about being great when we win by a point but call players crap when we just lose by 1.
You cannot blame Bob for that - it was also up to the other players to adapt without Gary and some could not.
Did you even listen to the interview?
Great interview Bob.
You have good structure in your interviews and extract what we need or want to hear. I sense your guests like that approach to. Keep up the good work.
Thank you, Peter! Appreciate that.
For what it's worth a lot of the guys tell me they enjoyed it when we say good bye at the end.
@frontrowrugby not surprised to hear that. That should only bring them back again or recommend you to the other legends.

Bobby could've won many more caps for the Boks if it was'nt for all his injuries! An interesting interview Peter.
Thanks Sean. Glad you enjoyed it. I agree. Bobby could have played 100 Tests otherwise!

Between 2000 and 2004 the boks were weakest post 1992 team ever, only matched by Allister's boks.
