Now that we have access to a TDI, what kind of videos do we need to do? This one will need a timing belt soon ;)
12' a3 tdi just discovered I've got a parasitic drain somewhere,new battery&charged fully,drove twice,sat for 3 days in bitter cold&dead,no aftermarket electronics.Any common places to start w/this gen tdi?
If its a model with swirl flaps, have a look at those! Terrible things, much better to use the aluminum intake without them, for engine longevity. Also i had myself a laugh after first having a Passat TDi be dead from swirl flap failure, and then to my surprise i found out the Mitsubishi Outlander also uses a VW 2.0tdi! Sans swirl flaps, luckily!
EGR, maybe which upgrades an tdi will do
I'd love to see info and opinions on the intercooler icing issues!
Waggle? =Wiggle+wabble
Thanks Charles for including TDIs in your DIYs. There are more of us out here than one might think. :)
indeed! I've been owning only TDIs since 2001.
Right! So hard to find stuff for cjaa. Keep the videos coming!
Thank you!
Checking in. Have a 2015 Passat TDI and 2015 Audi Q7 TDI. Thanks
Lmao eight i only owned 3 cars in my lifetime and they were old volkswagen tdi
The whole earth (should) appreciate people like you . Thank you
Without a scan tool: pull off the top-left fuel hose from the cap, pull the cap off and see what is the fuel level relative to the container. Put the new filter back in and let it soak some diesel in, top it to the same level with fresh diesel, put the cap back on, if you went too high, the surplus will exit trough the cap hole, after tightening the screws in a star pattern, put the hose back on, cycle the key 2 times and it starts up like nothing happened!
Me same
Perfect
Thank y'all
So glad your doing TDI stuff I really hope you cover them enough to help me solve my bkd issues
Charles VW tech here and I'm impressed you replaced the filter with almost zero spill
I’ve done one or two ;)
I just did a timing belt and thermostat on one of these. Fun stuff. Looking forward to more.
Good stuff man! My DD is a 2015 GSW that I bought new just before the dieselgate, ended keeping and getting it corrected by the dealer. The extra $$ for keeping it was good too, have it on KermaTDI tune for a few years now. Super fun to drive. ✌
I'll be doing my 07 1.9 TDI Jetta service soon very satisfying doing your own service.
Yay TDI's!
Not sure about the CR TDI's but you can remove the filter housing of PD TDI's, it's held on by some tabs. If you dislodge the housing from the tabs before removing the cap, you can take the housing off the car to empty it into a bottle and/or cleaning the inside of the housing. Having the housing off the car also makes it easier to fit the new filter.
They're super old but more PD TDI videos please!
Excellent video! Professional, detailed, logical, and easy to follow!
Awesome to see more TDI content!
Dude yes more TDI stuff- love it
Fantastic! Very enthusiastic and straightforward. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I have owned a CJAA VW Golf TDI for 8 years now and you do not have to use VCDS to prime the filter housing, but it is the most efficient way to ensure all of the air is bled out of the fuel lines. Personally, I fill the housing up to a little over half way and put the filter back in slowly. This ensures that the housing is "roughly" all the way full without any overspill and you can cycle the key 2-to-3 times to get the air out and ensure that you do not run the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) dry. The biggest discrepancy on this car is arguably the HPFP. If buying a used GOLF TDI, ensure that there is no metal shavings in the fuel filter housing or clinging on the inspection screen on top of the HPFP before signing any paperwork.
Doesn't work on all. Key cycle does absolutely nothing on my 14
@@davesnothere3425 strangely I have a 2014 and mine doesn't have an issue and I replace my fuel filter twice and I do it the same way that this guy does it.. make sure those fuel in the filter housing I even put some fuel treatment additive in the filter housing to give the injectors a good clean. And I never used vcds or any scan tool bulshit to prime the fuel system.. if you cycle the key on you can hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank running then shut off.
Vcds is not even that expensive, obd11 is even cheaper, just bleed it, vcds and obd11 pay for itself after the first fuel filter change
Thank you for the CR diesel videos!!
Great vid, I know lots of people also top up the filter housing before closing up……but I would strongly recommend not doing that if you run the HP pump dry even for seconds it’s cattle trucked, also in vcds the command can also be called ‘run transfer fuel pump’ I doubt you guys have the latest TDis (thanks to dieselgate?) but my recent TDI here in the uk where it would be cheaper to put gold in your car, doesn’t seem to run the low pressure pump unless and until the engine is running, so the ignition on/off scenario wouldn’t necessarily work.
Nice, I just overviewed this with someone on my Dad's PD TDI
In addition to enjoying his excellent mechanic tutorials, I love learning new words from Charles.
Today’s new words are: Burble, Sploosh, and Woggle. #themoreyouknow
Helped a TON. Thank you
Always learn something from your videos. Thanks
thank you!
Thanks for this VERY informational video. I’ve changed mine like twice, and I learned a bunch of small tips from this video. Thank you so much!!
I think you meant informational.
@@magellanicspaceclouds lol must’ve had a brain fart! thanks haha
Thank you, just did mine watching this vid
YESSSS MORE TDI STUFF PLEASE
Yes! I already do this myself, but I'm still watching the video!
This is the same process I follow when changing my 2015 TDI fuel filter. 👍
Nice video!
Love to see a coolant flush on a 2009 TDI and a 2015 TDI.
Brake flush using a power bleeder.
Like to see a step by step timing belt change on a 2015 TDI GOLF.
How to put the front lock carrier in the service position.
Upgrade 09 jetta factory radio to new radio with blue tooth, Can Gateway module, etc.
Love to see more tutorials on VCDS.
I live 2.5 hrs east of you and I don't mind if you want to use my 09 TDI Jetta or 2015 Golf TDI for any videos. I also have a 2021.5 VW Atlas
Love the video Charles the Best 💪
Thanks, that was good information 👍.
Those wheels look awesome. 🤙
I changed these all the time. So easy and doesn’t take much time either.
Great Video, Thanks!
This is great stuff! I have the same car but I paid someone to do this last time. Will there be anything else on this type of car that you will be showing? Thanks for showing this as this is a great help for when my filter is next due.
Great DIY video!
Thank you! Cheers!
Keep the TDI stuff coming
Still kicking ourselves for selling our TDI back to VW back in the day… I wanted to buy one of the cheap ones but didn’t have the cash at the time. Thanks for posting these videos should I ever get another TDI, they are nice to go back and lol at to double check yourself.
Started as a mechanic this month, first job was this, replacing the vacuum\lift pump, and an injector on a 2.0tdi. Little did i know, they hadnt done their research, and the customer was right in thinking it ran on only 3, as it had eaten a swirl flap, absolutely ruining the valves, head and block on that cylinder. RIP!
YES TDI CONTENT
Very nice video sir
Things have changed from the ancient days of the early 21st century when you would go to your local “diesel” seller that pushed his own mix of “bio-diesel” for 20 cents less. That was when you’d pour the dregs out of the filter. Now in these modern times you might even see a cetane rating on the pump! 😱 But seriously, Charles, nice video. Doesn’t show the bleed screw like my 06, nor the flange gasket of my 15, but a good procedure nonetheless, and truthfully these filters are not so expensive that the DIYer can change them at the 10k oil service interval. 👍👍
I swapped those T30 bolts with 10 mm hex bolts that I oil tempered. The goal is to swap everything to a 10 mm.
Thanks for you sir
Yes more TDi content
I have a 2015 tdi jetta with a straight pipe rawtek system with malone tune. It really wakes the car up pretty peppy for a 4 cylinder front wheel drive. I filter all my diesel fuel through a 2 micron transfer pump before filling any of my diesel vehicles. I am looking at doing an amsoil oil filter bypass next. Do a video on that i'm curious where you would choose to put the filter.
Good video 👍
Can you make videos of cleaning in tank fuel pump
If you’re doing more tdi stuff please cover the mk4 platform 🙏🏻
Hi there, we have many of the TDI's in Australia so good to cover them, thanks.
I have a 2013 5N 103TDI pacific Tiguan with the 1968cc CFFB engine. I assume it's the same procedure.
Indeed it's much the same for most VW TDI engines. Mine throws a haldex pump code occasionally, so pump will need replacing at some stage. I know you've covered the haldex service. Could you cover a pump replacement please. Also, have you had a play around with OBDeleven what do you think? Have you done a review.
I'm happy to see more TDI stuff here. I have a 2015 Golf TDI, a 2014 Beetle TDI, and my trusty crusty 1981 Rabbit Diesel. If you can do some stuff on the mk7, that would be great too (If you have access to one!)
MK7 is a little tougher since they are so limited
Really hoping you'll do a timing belt. While this isn't the CRUA it will give some idea of how it goes!
Saw Charles rolling through Salisbury yesterday in the Yellow Golf R! Good looking car.
Yes!!! Visiting NTI, and Paul
@@HumbleMechanic I was like “what’s the possibility it’s actually him”? Can’t mistake that majestic beard!! 🤣🤣🤣 Keep up with the great videos and I don’t even own a VW…
Cheers man thank you
The screwdriver type torx tool should be adequate to tighten down those five screws. Very easy to strip the threads bearing in mind the 'O' ring (providing undamaged) is what seal's the fluid from escaping.
Thanks for this video, I am personally still waiting on the R32 turbo build you did the upgraded clutch kit last
Same! That car is at the body shop. Once it comes back, we are all in on r32
@@HumbleMechanic appreciate the response, really looking forward to it 👍🏽
What I would really like to see is the "paint and pray" method of timing belt replacement. I have never been desparate enough to try it, but it would be interesting to see.
I have a 2013 Mark VI TDI now and love that priming option with the VCDS. When I had my Mark IV, was that priming option available? I don't recall it was. Thanks
This is not a hard job, but I makes me appreciate my OM617 filter change procedure even more: unscrew filter, screw on new filter, use primer pump to bleed system, drive away.
Charles, I want more Paul and Charles shenanigans
Working on that video now
Wooooo TDI stuff I’m so upset I’m not going to be able to see you at Lindsey VW as it’s pretty close to me make sure to post when you’ll be back up there👍👍👍
Ah man that’s a bummer. I think Paul and I might head back up when the weather doesn’t suck!!!
@@HumbleMechanic That’d be awesome maybe get your guys’ insight on my tdi that’s been tuned with the cr170 and some other stuff done to it too👍
Nice video. What do you think of Filtron filter. Are they any good.
I typically use some fresh ATF to lube the o-rings on diesel fuel filters. ATF is a bit more slippery than Diesel, so i find it's better for avoiding pinching an O-ring. Also it mixes very easily with diesel and diesel engines can basically run on the ATF anyway. So a few drops of ATF in your diesel fuel isn't going to harm anything, in fact most likely the opposite. There's lots of detergents in ATF that can help clean carbon deposits. An old farmer's trick for having an injector that isn't spraying well is to pre fill you fuel filters with ATF and run it.
Do NOT do that on a CR engine. Sure fire way to destroy the HPFP is mixing anything in the diesel. I've had to replace the complete fuel system of a friends audi a4 because someone accidentally misfueled it with only a few litres of petrol
Thanks. Just bought one. Have never owned anything than a American V8.
I topped up my filter canister with Power Service fuel supplement.
Do you have a video on the fuel pump. Mine is leaking and looking to replace it
Hi Charles, what is the cleaner spray you used to clean the top of the filter housing (1:34)?
I just bought a 2014 Jetta sports wagon TDI. Can I key prime the fuel filter?
Hey Charles, I have a question, is it ok to plug in the obd dongle while the engine is running ? For example, I've been doing this for awhile when I see my car doing a dpf regen I plug the obd dongle and track the progress so I know more or less when it ends and to see the temperatures, etc, but I thought to myself this days if that's really ok to do it. Could it short something in the obd plug for example ?
Great videos! I love how meticulous you are with your work. Question, What is the brand of your Fluid/oil extractor vacuum pump you use in your shop. Wanting to buy one for a mechanic friend :) Thanks so much!
i too would like to know
Very didatic and quite well explained , i,vê been following humble for a time and o have learned a Lot with him as well as i'm doing the same with engeeniring explained UA-cam Channel !!
Hey I need to put winter additive in mine is it a 50 50 ratio with diesel the bottle doesn't say and I can't find any guides on doing this.
On common rail tdi most hpfp issues will be covered under the emissions warranty. I recently got a new glow plug and intercooler and hoses under warranty on my 2012 golf sportwagen.
2014 jetta tdi. been told key cycles dont prime the system or remove air. you said its ok if you dont remove the fuel, to cycle the key a few times?
I have a 2014 jetta TDI with 85.000 miles on it when should I have the timing belt changed? Thank you so much for any info.
First!!! Good to see you Charles!
WOO!!!
Greetings, I would like to know if the 2006 jetta 1.9l tdi automatic is a good buy?
Any specific filter brand you recommend? :-)
I just changed my fuel filter, and drained the entire container like you did. Ran OBDEleven on channel 35 4 times. But the car will not start now.
It ran perfect and started right up before I did this.
Any thoughts?
Ok Charles. What's the deal with the red Beetle? 3.6 BiTurbo, DQ381, and Haldex AWD swap?
Hello, what do you think of amsoil 15w40 heavy duty motor oil? In the manual it says that it is compliant for OEM service, could I use it in my truck for 12,500 miles? or better change it to 6,000 miles.?
Hello Charles!
After I have somewhat of a confirmation from you guys I’d like to buy whatever parts this issue fixes.
2010 Golf GTI DSG
I have a DQ250 that drives up until the end of 3rd gear. And won’t shift into 4th(if I try to get into 4th, either manually, auto or sports the gearbox completely disengages and basically goes to neutral whilst flashing D3 with wrench) . BUT if I put it in neutral at the end of 3rd , if I’m at speed it will skip 4th and go to D5 or D6.. is that clutch pack, synchro, or mechatronic??? No mechanics near me know anything about it, the stealership wants to just replace with new for 8,000 and I’m sure I’d be able to get whatever part it is from y’all a lot cheaper..
Thanks!
Where is your under bonnet light from?
"Chewbacca sound epic" 😂😂 👍
Charles thanks for posting TDI content. I was looking at a timing belt replacement at the time I sold my Jetta TDI Cup Car back to VW in 2017. I'd be interested in seeing more TDI repair videos for certain. I hope to find another TDI sometime in the near future.
Begin the quest now. They are becoming scarce AF, and ever more expensive.
Awesome tutorial! And it looks like much fun too.
You even made me want to replace the diesel fuel filter on my Tesla.
LOL Thanks! Post that video and tags me please. LOL
If you would be so kind, please add a video changing the blinker fluid. The Tesla service manager told me it needs to be done but I can't get an appointment at the dealer until March.
Changing the fuel filter is a nightmare for me. Everytime I changed it, somehow air got trapped and could never start up the engine. Seems to be a common problem on this cr tdi's, I did everything by the book, pre filled the filter, primed with vcds plenty of times but it always took many tries and me ending up having to vacuum through the return line to get it working.
Now the weirdest part was when I primed by vcds to bleed the air out, I removed the fuel return line to the tank to see if I could remove airlock wherever it was, I pressed the priming button and the fuel started coming from the return line to the tank instead of coming from the hpfp and it sure made a mess with diesel everywhere.
So my guess is the tank fuel pump is working backwards atleast when I prime it by vcds I don't know if that's even possible but that's what happened hence why there was always an airlock.
Weird that I see many videos with just cycling the ignition and it turns right away and for me it's always a pita.
Mine is a 1.6 tdi with the complete fuel canister instead of just the filter and 2 fuel lines instead of 4.
Can anyone give a succinct summary of which models can be primed via the ignition? (Mine is 2013 TDI Passat)
Also, apart from grit & metal flakes, do you need to empty the housing anyway to ensure removal of water?
What about just pouring diesel back in afterward instead of scantooling it?
lol 5 nm, when I did mine i swear it was at like 20 ft/lb. The previous tech clearly didn't know what he was doing. After 4 broken T30 wd30, a heat gun, a punch I was able to get all of them out. I of course replaced all the fasteners.
Do you have PD TDI cars in the US?
We want some videos with the TT from your backround... ;)
Soon!!!!
I've been debating doing this myself for a but. Usually have my mechanic do it. Charles, have you looked into the nicktuned CAT style spin on filter conversion?
haven't looked at that style! With zero education on it(HAHA) it seems like its solving an issue thats not an issue.
Now that filer may be a finer filter, and that would be cool. but just for ease, I dont know if its worth it
I had like 1/3 of fuel left in canister and didn't realize I had to top off
I cycled the car 4-5 times
And it started right, is it safe to say if there was a problem with priming I would know right away ?
Hey HumbleMechanic Need some help I Bought a 2002 VW Passate 1.8t 6 months ago. recently I went to Ottostadt get my heater core cleaned or something. so they did an inspection and now they took pictures of worn out control arm bushings that need replacing. sent me a video of the arm being moved by a crow bar and tell me the arm is supposed to go back in place you can hear creaking like rotten broken metal. also the power steering pressure hose is leaking saying it also needs replacing. Front axel boot needs replacing and Rear shocks are corroded... they are saying they would feel bad if i put the money and effort into this.. starting a new job soon and I don't know what to do
Good
God i remember doing this on my Golf Mk6 1.6TDi last year. Long story short, priming through scantool did not actually prime the system. I did it multiple times but still ran the common rail dry when i went to start.
I think the 1.6 Mk6s don’t have an Auxiliary pump under the bonnet, meaning the tank pump that supplied the filter housing was too weak to bleed and prime the system itself enough for the High Pressure Fuel Pump to get fed.
Taking off the line from the filter to the High Pressure Fuel Pump and using the scantool until it spits diesel out did the trick for me. In hindsight, i should have thrown diesel myself into the filter housing and went from there.
notification squad!🔥🔥🔥
Having changed hundreds of these filters... It is 100% normal to see some fine metal flakes. I have never changed one and not see some. The high pressure fuel pump does wear some. Especially with low sulfur diesel. Kinda the reason you change the filter.
Note: On PD 1.9 and 2.0tdis the process the same HOWEVER on PDs the turn of the key to prime the fuel is enough if you didnt drain the fuel out of the housing which on PDs you shouldnt otherwise you gonna sit there cranking for days. Cycling the key once before start does the trick at least in my experience.
See that large pipe that comes out of the engine and runs along the front of the engine compartment then goes round the back of the diesel filter and then under the coolant bottle, what is that and how bad is it if that is not in its clamp and just bouncing around?
I have a Europen car repair shop and I do it the factory way I put on a power supply and the battery and then run the fuel pump at least 2 times until it stops by it self even on the second time you can hear the air bubbles going out of the filter assembly I don't want to risk the customer fuel pump of draining the battery or overheating the starter plus I know if I have a leak and when the customer car have no stalling when they leave. the easiest filter to replace is the ones with the seal built on the filter it self I think it's the 2015 cars.
The time has finally come. If you want to do more diesel stuff, my V10 TDI is up for sale! :). Mmmm, tandem pump fun to be had! Less fun, but much more reasonable Golf Alltrak will be it’s replaceable.
Are you near oregon state by any chance?

I miss my 2009 tdi. 130k with no issues. Couldn't resist the buyback offer ($5k over book).
100% I would have taken that $ too!!
