Also i had myself a laugh after first having a Passat TDi be dead from swirl flap failure, and then to my surprise i found out the Mitsubishi Outlander also uses a VW 2.0tdi! Sans swirl flaps, luckily!
Without a scan tool: pull off the top-left fuel hose from the cap, pull the cap off and see what is the fuel level relative to the container. Put the new filter back in and let it soak some diesel in, top it to the same level with fresh diesel, put the cap back on, if you went too high, the surplus will exit trough the cap hole, after tightening the screws in a star pattern, put the hose back on, cycle the key 2 times and it starts up like nothing happened!

Yay TDI's! Not sure about the CR TDI's but you can remove the filter housing of PD TDI's, it's held on by some tabs. If you dislodge the housing from the tabs before removing the cap, you can take the housing off the car to empty it into a bottle and/or cleaning the inside of the housing. Having the housing off the car also makes it easier to fit the new filter. They're super old but more PD TDI videos please!
I have owned a CJAA VW Golf TDI for 8 years now and you do not have to use VCDS to prime the filter housing, but it is the most efficient way to ensure all of the air is bled out of the fuel lines. Personally, I fill the housing up to a little over half way and put the filter back in slowly. This ensures that the housing is "roughly" all the way full without any overspill and you can cycle the key 2-to-3 times to get the air out and ensure that you do not run the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) dry. The biggest discrepancy on this car is arguably the HPFP. If buying a used GOLF TDI, ensure that there is no metal shavings in the fuel filter housing or clinging on the inspection screen on top of the HPFP before signing any paperwork.
@@davesnothere3425 strangely I have a 2014 and mine doesn't have an issue and I replace my fuel filter twice and I do it the same way that this guy does it.. make sure those fuel in the filter housing I even put some fuel treatment additive in the filter housing to give the injectors a good clean. And I never used vcds or any scan tool bulshit to prime the fuel system.. if you cycle the key on you can hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank running then shut off.
Good stuff man! My DD is a 2015 GSW that I bought new just before the dieselgate, ended keeping and getting it corrected by the dealer. The extra $$ for keeping it was good too, have it on KermaTDI tune for a few years now. Super fun to drive. ✌

I typically use some fresh ATF to lube the o-rings on diesel fuel filters. ATF is a bit more slippery than Diesel, so i find it's better for avoiding pinching an O-ring. Also it mixes very easily with diesel and diesel engines can basically run on the ATF anyway. So a few drops of ATF in your diesel fuel isn't going to harm anything, in fact most likely the opposite. There's lots of detergents in ATF that can help clean carbon deposits. An old farmer's trick for having an injector that isn't spraying well is to pre fill you fuel filters with ATF and run it.
Do NOT do that on a CR engine. Sure fire way to destroy the HPFP is mixing anything in the diesel. I've had to replace the complete fuel system of a friends audi a4 because someone accidentally misfueled it with only a few litres of petrol
This is not a hard job, but I makes me appreciate my OM617 filter change procedure even more: unscrew filter, screw on new filter, use primer pump to bleed system, drive away.

Great vid, I know lots of people also top up the filter housing before closing up……but I would strongly recommend not doing that if you run the HP pump dry even for seconds it’s cattle trucked, also in vcds the command can also be called ‘run transfer fuel pump’ I doubt you guys have the latest TDis (thanks to dieselgate?) but my recent TDI here in the uk where it would be cheaper to put gold in your car, doesn’t seem to run the low pressure pump unless and until the engine is running, so the ignition on/off scenario wouldn’t necessarily work.
Started as a mechanic this month, first job was this, replacing the vacuum\lift pump, and an injector on a 2.0tdi. Little did i know, they hadnt done their research, and the customer was right in thinking it ran on only 3, as it had eaten a swirl flap, absolutely ruining the valves, head and block on that cylinder. I had like 1/3 of fuel left in canister and didn't realize I had to top off I cycled the car 4-5 times And it started right, is it safe to say if there was a problem with priming I would know right away ?
What I would really like to see is the "paint and pray" method of timing belt replacement. I have never been desparate enough to try it, but it would be interesting to see.

Changing the fuel filter is a nightmare for me. Everytime I changed it, somehow air got trapped and could never start up the engine. Seems to be a common problem on this cr tdi's, I did everything by the book, pre filled the filter, primed with vcds plenty of times but it always took many tries and me ending up having to vacuum through the return line to get it working. Now the weirdest part was when I primed by vcds to bleed the air out, I removed the fuel return line to the tank to see if I could remove airlock wherever it was, I pressed the priming button and the fuel started coming from the return line to the tank instead of coming from the hpfp and it sure made a mess with diesel everywhere. So my guess is the tank fuel pump is working backwards atleast when I prime it by vcds I don't know if that's even possible but that's what happened hence why there was always an airlock. Weird that I see many videos with just cycling the ignition and it turns right away and for me it's always a pita. Mine is a 1.6 tdi with the complete fuel canister instead of just the filter and 2 fuel lines instead of 4.
Hello, what do you think of amsoil 15w40 heavy duty motor oil? In the manual it says that it is compliant for OEM service, could I use it in my truck for 12,500 miles? or better change it to 6,000 miles.?
Single best additive you can put in your tank is a cetane booster like 2-ethyl hexyl nitrate. Your engine and DPF will thank you for it. I add chemicals for lubricity too to protect the injectors. Now modern oil refineries remove sulfur from diesel, polar compounds that prevented wear are stripped out. In Europe you can order Mannol diesel additive with ester compounds as Wear inhibitors/lubricant plus medium chain alcohols like butanol which booster the cetane rating. I also add some hydrotreated light naphthalene which a diesel engine will tolerate. That will clean carbon deposits more effectively than diesel. Hope this helps. I'm not a petrochemical engineer but I studied chemical engineering so close enough
If you don't have a scan tool to prime the system. You can put the filter in the canister then fill it with fresh fuel. Then put to top on and tighten it up.
Hi Nice video... if you cleaned the bowl and you don't have the scan tool, can you just fill the bowl with the new filter in an then re-install the filter cover?
This is great stuff! I have the same car but I paid someone to do this last time. Will there be anything else on this type of car that you will be showing? Thanks for showing this as this is a great help for when my filter is next due.
On common rail tdi most hpfp issues will be covered under the emissions warranty. I recently got a new glow plug and intercooler and hoses under warranty on my 2012 golf sportwagen.
Charles thanks for posting TDI content. I was looking at a timing belt replacement at the time I sold my Jetta TDI Cup Car back to VW in 2017. I'd be interested in seeing more TDI repair videos for certain. I hope to find another TDI sometime in the near future.
Note: On PD 1.9 and 2.0tdis the process the same HOWEVER on PDs the turn of the key to prime the fuel is enough if you didnt drain the fuel out of the housing which on PDs you shouldnt otherwise you gonna sit there cranking for days. Cycling the key once before start does the trick at least in my experience.
Wow - filter change every 20K? Dang - didn't know diesel was that dirty. Wonder how many TDI's have gone WAY past that schedule interval due to owner negligence. Thanks for the info Charles!
The reason for 20K is they where to cheap to put a water sensor in the bottom of the filter housing. Also doesn't have a bottom drain. Really poor designed fuel system when compared to industrial.
@@briansmith9258 On my 2014 TDI, Yes. There is no "water in fuel sensor" on it. Where as all the trucks and equipment I have, use sensors or sight glass and filter drains.

Would a clogged fuel filter cause a p0087 low fuel pressure code?
Could be a hpfp
Hello, what do you think of amsoil 15w40 heavy duty motor oil? In the manual it says that it is compliant for OEM service, could I use it in my truck for 12,500 miles? or better change it to 6,000 miles.?
If you’re doing more tdi stuff please cover the mk4 platform 🙏🏻
Is the diesel dark you have a bad pump on the side of the valve cover. Seen that a lot of times on VAG
Ive only seen that on PD engines, where the injector seals leak.
@@HumbleMechanic PD are the worst. But also the moste commen amongst those VAG's I have done work on.
How do you feel about diesel additives?
@@richcheema outside of the Mannol, what other name brand products do you use?
Thanks, that was good information 👍.
Really hoping you'll do a timing belt. While this isn't the CRUA it will give some idea of how it goes!
Good video 👍
Can you make videos of cleaning in tank fuel pump
@3:15 “woggle” - which of coarse means to walk something off of it’s housing whilst wiggling
I miss my 2009 tdi. 130k with no issues. Couldn't resist the buyback offer ($5k over book).
100% I would have taken that $ too!!
I’m assuming this is the same procedure as a Passat CKRA?
If you don't have a scan tool to prime the system. You can put the filter in the canister then fill it with fresh fuel. Then put to top on and tighten it up.
yep., just put that filter in slow! LOL
I miss my 2010 Jetta TDI. I regret trading it for a hybrid Jetta.
Nice video. What do you think of Filtron filter. Are they any good.
Great Video, Thanks!
Hi Nice video... if you cleaned the bowl and you don't have the scan tool, can you just fill the bowl with the new filter in an then re-install the filter cover?
Why’d you clean it? Not necessary unless metal in there.
@@briansmith9258 I though there could be some water and other deposit coming from the fuel tank
@@mariobeaudoin9733 I understand. Just asking.
This is great stuff! I have the same car but I paid someone to do this last time. Will there be anything else on this type of car that you will be showing? Thanks for showing this as this is a great help for when my filter is next due.
How do you key cycle if its a push start?
Push the button with out your foot on the brake.
Begin the quest now. They are becoming scarce AF, and ever more expensive.
Hi Charles I have a question? Do you think it would be a good idea to replace the high pressure fuel pump, when you replace the timing belt?
In general no, if you don’t have a failure
Note: On PD 1.9 and 2.0tdis the process the same HOWEVER on PDs the turn of the key to prime the fuel is enough if you didnt drain the fuel out of the housing which on PDs you shouldnt otherwise you gonna sit there cranking for days. Cycling the key once before start does the trick at least in my experience.
Wow - filter change every 20K? Dang - didn't know diesel was that dirty. Wonder how many TDI's have gone WAY past that schedule interval due to owner negligence. Thanks for the info Charles!
My 2012 tdi sportwagen manual says every 40k miles.
The reason for 20K is they where to cheap to put a water sensor in the bottom of the filter housing.
Also doesn't have a bottom drain.
Really poor designed fuel system when compared to industrial.
@@Ramboy2007 - so it's less about dirty fuel, more about water separation drain off. Agreed - that design could've been better...
@@Ramboy2007 so filter can be saturated with water?
@@briansmith9258 On my 2014 TDI, Yes.
There is no "water in fuel sensor" on it.
Where as all the trucks and equipment I have, use sensors or sight glass and filter drains.
can you do mrk4 golf bew tdi show thayou
do you need to fill the fuel filter with fuel inside?
please someone answer
I just changed my fuel filter, and drained the entire container like you did. Ran OBDEleven on channel 35 4 times. But the car will not start now.
It ran perfect and started right up before I did this.
Any thoughts?
