    I notice all reviews show the video format as h.264. Can these support h.265?

    Which cameras are you using?

    I love this, will definitely be giving this a go. One thing I wonder, how do I know how much storage my cameras will use? I'm going to use this as my NAS storage for photos and videos, but when I add 6 cameras, how much should I plan to devote to it?

      Depends on the resolution, and whether you've got only motion-activated recordings. My front door camera in constant use is working out at about 2GB per day for motion events. Storing a 24/7 stream will take a *lot* more. For 6 cameras, you'll definitely need to limit yourself to events only, I think.

    Can you access the live feed outside of your network, ie on the road?

      If you set up remote access, yes, same as anyother service running on your Synology box. It supports QuickConnect: www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/help/DSM/AdminCenter/connection_quickconnect

    what is the different between ds220j and ds220+

      j is budget series, + is much more powerful. More RAM, more CPU. You could run some virtual machines on the + series, for instance. Really depends on what you want to do with it.

    Can I use solid state drives (SSD) instead of traditional spinning hard drives?

    • @MakeUseOf
      @MakeUseOf  2 роки тому +1

      You could, but it would be a waste given the inherent network speed limitations. It wont be faster than HDDs.

    • @bobby1970
      @bobby1970 2 роки тому

      @@MakeUseOf , yeah, but SSD drives are much more reliable now, than traditional spinning drives, especially if you get the Samsung SSD drives.

      @@bobby1970 they are more reliable, but only with regard to drops/ physical damage.
      keeps the spinning drives safe and in a place no one will damage them and it shouldn't make too much difference.

    Switching to HomeKit for my new house with the secure video and ios 14 updates. Also weak point is a burglar taking the recordings with a network drive.

      if a burglar takes your recordings, your camera system didn't do it's job correctly

      Hmm, I'll have to look into the new homekit stuff, good tip. Personally I hide my NAS in the loft, I doubt a burglar would go to the bother of getting the ladder and rummaging around up there...
