    A Guide to Surveillance for NAS, Licenses and Compatible Cameras - nascompares.com/recommended-i...
    One of the most popular reasons that people buy their first network-attached storage (NAS) is the ease and versatility of setting up a cheap and fully featured Network Video Recorder (NVR). Almost all modern NAS feature surveillance support to a greater or lesser degree, whether it is a proprietary application like Surveillance Station or QVR Pro, or the NAS can support 3rd party applications like milestone surveillance. However the NAS server is only part of the ideal surveillance network setup and in order to capture your recordings, you will need network supported cameras, known as IP Cameras. There are hundreds of brands out there that will try to sell you their IP cameras, but only a small % are actually compatible with NAS systems, as it requires the camera to be used and controlled by the NAS software.

    I just wanted to say thank you. Over the past couple of years I've been working on setting up my NAS in some fairly complex ways and I always seem to find myself stumbling across your videos, and I've never been disappointed. You provide a bias-free opinion on all products I see you speak about, and you really seem to do your research. Thank you for being here, so much. Your work is appreciated.

      I'm in the same boat as you. I checked the Sinology website for comparability before I bought cameras around black Friday. I ended up with a Foscam UHD 4.0MP (driveway) and a FHD 1080P (front door) at excellent prices. I wish I'd seen this video first. I currently have two WD Red 4TB drives in the 920+. I think I'll add two old WD Red 2 TB drives for surveillance, so I don't wear out my main drives. I'll sacrifice those rather than buy Purple. I may have to install CAT5 if my wireless chokes. Adding the cameras seems like it'll take some (a lot of) dedicated time, which I don't have right now. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR NEXT PROJECT!

    I’m kinda amazed there isn’t an open source protocol for this. It seems simple enough to feed multiple data streams into a single server.

    Thanks for a great vid! The comments around pushing for a separate system for security are redundant. This video is for people like us who already have NAS systems and want to add security seamlessly. I'd like to see some recommendations for typical NAS systems like mine. 920+ with SHR1 with volume @ 20Tb usable storage. Also, how to set it up like use Docker or not? Heaps of people recommend separating the security system volume from say PLEX media. I'm interested in that.

    Thank you for your great Videos, thumbs up! Question: if you have more than one NAS - lets say one principal and one for backup, can you use the 2 free licenses per NAS (Syno) with lets say 4 cameras? or must all point to one NAS? And its possible to mix like NAS and Synology for the Cams? thank you. KR

    Great video thanks. What is the impact on NAS performance in terms of network bandwidth, CPU usage, memory and hard drive longevity? Will an IP camera recording 24/7 affect NAS performance for day to day file storage? Is is worth having a separate low value NAS just for IP cameras?

    Thanks Robbie for your usual very informative video. Just a quick question.
    If you have more than one NAS, let's say 2 QNAP devices, can you transfer the licences from one to the other? For example, if you have one low spec and one high spec device, can you transfer the licences from the low spec one to the high spec one so that the more powerful system can have the combined number of licences attached to it and thus run more connected cameras? Or, are the licences permanently linked to the original devices that they shipped with and non-transferable?
    Thanks

    I'm not suggesting that the camera's I'm using are any better or any worse than what others are using - simply putting this out there as info. My DS414 has 3 Hikvision cameras connected to it and they work a charm. Two of the models were supported directly, a cheap one I found on eBay was supported via the Hikvision Generic settings.
    Camera's support two streams, thought he DS Cam software seems to support 3.
    Recording two camera's at 3070 x 2048 and 1 at 3840 x 2160
    Upgrading to 920+ tomorrow
    Worried that DS Photo isn't going to work on my Andoird TV - DS Photostation works fantastically!
    Feel free to reply to this message if you've any questions.

    200€ for an extra 4 camera license to Synology DS920+ is ridiculous!
    Which IP indoor cameras (brand and model) do you advise to this Synology NAS?
    I won't asks for those that can see if it's just my dog passing by or if is a person since i think DS920+ doesn't support it, but at least 1080p cameras.
    I thought about Reolink E1 Zoom but i don't know if it's a good option.
    At the moment i just have one old Xiaomi Xiaofang camera (with hack) connected to Surveillance Station and 3 Xiaomi Imilab 360º 1080p connected to a specific user and folder but i want something better and from other brand.
    Thanks

    Fairly pointless excercise! 1 ) your hard drives need to be CCTV grade hardened, may not be the case with your NAS. 1) A. NVR often comes with POE built into it, thereby simplifying installation. 3) It is better to use the same brand camera as the NVR ( even if ONVIF compliant) as many AI features are directly accessible through the NVR software, without having to resort to using a separate web browser. Most commercial. IP CCTV is licence free, and comes with unlimited use software for MAC or PC , additionally software is provided for Android or iPhone ( sometimes a small one off charge is made for this) . Remote login for clients is also P2P capable and will work happily on a WAN with a dynamic IP. Particularly useful for residential users who often not have a static IP.
    All in all a proprietary IP CCTV system is a far better bet. I 've been in this businesses for nearly 40 years ( since the days of cameras with vidicon tubes!!!)

    • @jankompan
      @jankompan 3 роки тому

      Well, the best bet is unify system. Great IP PoE cameras, on-site stored video feed, no subscription, no fees. Mobile app with face recognition, protected unified system with firewall. It is not for all, as it is so expensive. But it is 2021, CCTV ? Really ?

    • @ammej768
      @ammej768 3 роки тому

      @@jankompan IP cameras can now also store footage on an internal microSD card ( of a decent make!). No NVR to steal. All free software supplied for a 4mp camera @ £70 with a 4 year warranty.

      If you are already running a NAS would it not make sense to run your cameras through the existing hardware? I am looking camera options, mostly for fun rather than security, and I was considering hooking into the NAS rather than buying an NVR and running 2 systems.

    • @ammej768
      @ammej768 3 роки тому

      @@colonelmiguel6328 you will need to uograde/ replace your drives to type certified for CCTV use. The write cycles are ruinous to any other type. Both Western Digital and Seagate make suitable types. Guaranteed for 4 years in some cases. You will still need to access the IP cameras many settings through a Web browser rather than proprietary CCTV software. This make day to day operations more tedious. A dedicated NVR is not expensive and the streamlined benefits oughtweigh any costs. Check out www.dahuasecurity.com.

      @richardcondon1125 3 роки тому

      @@ammej768 just to clarify a couple of the points you’ve made in relation to storage.
      For NAS based CCTV, its recommended to use NAS drives (Ironwolf, Red, N300) rather than surveillance specific. This is because their firmware is better suited to RAID than surveillance specific HDD.
      Manufacturer warranty on surveillance specific HDD is 3 years - that’s across the board from Toshiba, Seagate and WD.
      You can use enterprise grade HDD if you wanted a 5 year MFR warranty on the drive.
