  • Watch and listen to this excellent Porsche 914 2.0 rip though the mountains, as this owner talks about his passion for the car. These cars were the bastards of the Porsche world for the longest time, not accepted by the Porsche community because of their Volkswagen roots. Over the past few years things have really changed and now the masses are realizing what awesome cars they are, as seen by the prices these little cars are fetching these days.

    When i was a kid at school in Scotland an old lady had one and she parked it across from the school. I used to walk round it and look inside it every day.I thought it looked special and i have only ever seen one in my life,never ever seen another, most exotic looking car iv seen!

    I've always been attracted to this polarizing design, and finally bought one for my first dedicated race car! So far I am impressed with it's nimbleness. It's absolutely the most balanced car I've ever driven.

    I almost bought one of these in the late 70's early 80's. The shop selling it gave me some pricing on parts and scared me away. 30 years later I now own a Porsche and love it. I love the 914 and now wish I bought that car I first saw. Thanks for the great video. Cheers from Canada.

    Great video! My father purchased his 914 brand new in 71 after returning from Vietnam. He just told me a few months ago he's passing it on to me. Barely any rust and 69k original miles. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited!

      These cars have a tendency to rust from the inside out - so if you're seeing signs of rust, plead with your Dad to find a body man who is intimately familiar with the 914 and have the car checked for some of the "secret/hidden" spots where rust can start and then spread. A low mileage car will literally rust in half if you don't take care of the rust before it spreads. Good luck and congrats on the heirloom!

    very nice condition for 40 year old car. Bought my 914 new for around 6 grand way back in 1975 at the age of 19. It was an awesome driving experience where I lived in the Austin Tx hill country. I do remember incurring a 600 dollar valve job once though.1977 dollars! lol

    I had a '75 914 2.0 in college in the 80's and I loved it and hated it. But mostly loved it. I miss it and want it back. My father had a '73 911 RS and an '87 911 Cabriolet that I owned after his passing for 9 years. I'd take the 914 anyday.

    I rode in one 2 days ago. A canary yellow 2.0, almost mint. Took it down a windy road by the Stanislaus river. It had good grip, cornered very well. Nice sound. I've loved these cars since my parents owned one when I was a kid. 1976, silver with the porsche lettering along the bottom. They sold it before I was old enough to drive. :(

    I had a 74 2.0 in the 80s. Had a mild cam and dual carbs. Fun little car. I remember having to mount a remote starter celenoid as the one on the starter would not work from time to time when the engine got hot (push starts were not fun). Don't think I 'd be up to the frequent valve adjustments and frequent sync'n of the throttles on the dual Webber 40s like I use to do... but she always ran sweet and was worth it back then.

    I was owned by a 70 914. Big mistake getting first year production run: relocate fuel pump (vapor locking), replace the voltage regulator annually, horrible shifter, etc., etc. Having said that, fond memories of pre 55 mph motoring in the 914. Replaced it with a '79 5 spd Scirocco. Wish I had both of those cars! Happy Driving.

      @Bill Gund Not making fun of your grammar if it was unintentional but I had a good laugh at "I was owned by a 70 914." Those early model Sirocco's were a blast - light and nimble. Still recall the torque steer and the back wheel "leg lift" around tight corners, but that was all part of the fun back then!

    This spring my son and I are picking up a 74 2.0 from the bro in law in Oregon. Originally a California car It's been sitting since early 90's with 70k on the odometer, it currently set up with webbers and the fuel injection system is in a box, but aside from rodent infestation it's all there and no rust. I'm sure we'll be talking in future months.

    I owned a '74, with the AFC (Air flow controlled) fuel injection. It was the 1.8 liter. I finally sold it to the UPS driver after all the gauges failed.
    The oil tubes always leaked, and the "heater" sucked air from around the manifolds, so when it rained, if fogged the windshield! Also, the only way to stay warm on the road was to remove the top to produce negative pressure in the cab and SUCK air through the anemic ventilation system.

    Beautiful car. If you're looking for suggestions on what to do next, I'd vote for dumping those heavy wheels and finding someone on 914world that will sell you four Fuchs wheels. I'd also consider putting in driving lights. In 1974 every option was ala carte and it's so unusual to find a 2.0 914 without driving lights. If the car doesn't have sway bars that's probably top of the list since you enjoy the driving experience so much. Congrats on finding a rust free car - they are very tough to find these days!

    *Nobody* liked this car when it was introduced. Prices were dirt cheap for used cars.
    Now, everyone loves them, especially the 914/6.
    It's a great little car with some rather good engineering, and a very racy layout (mid-engine H4 - or H6 for the /6 - well forward of the rear axle, longitudinal transaxle).

    The 4cyl engine had a notorious head oil leak. I had a customer who I did advertising for who would Only do these motors and he put in a 5th head stud that cured the oil leak. He also deep sunk the studs to take the stress from his polished heads and zero decking to increase the compression. These engines were race engines. He had a 6 month waiting time on his orders that's how good his work was.

    Very nice clean car, congratulations. I am on my third one 1975 1.8L. Because they are 50 years old, you can't always choose whats available. I agree the 2.0 is the best, but that should not stop anyone. I have had 2-1973's and and a 1975. I like the newer one better.

    Super nice car - Prototipo steering wheel looks outstanding. I'm going to go out on a limb and say your car isn't a factory 2.0....? I definitely could be wrong, but every 73-74 2.0s I've encountered in the past almost always includes fog lights and Fuch alloy wheels...and usually the triple gauge center console. Normally I can't stand the aftermarket exhaust note but your Bursch sounds great.
    The Euro lenses on the front are a nice touch - you might consider finishing the look with the light update that puts the parking lights down in the clear area while keeping the turn signal up in the orange area.
    So nice to see a 914 on the road - they are getting more rare by the day!

    • @Drivingwhileawesome
      @Drivingwhileawesome  10 років тому +4

      Thanks Rob! This car belongs to my brother and it is a factory 2.0. The "appearance package" included the chrome bumpers and fog lights. and this center console was standard on the 1973 cars, but later became an option. Having owned a few 914's myself...I cant stand the center console, because I would always bang my leg into it and it made for an uncomfortable driving position for me. It is getting really rare to see these fantastic cars on the road.

    If you want one of these, make sure you get it on a lift and check really hard for rust and oil leaks. Battery tray and rocker panels are real problem areas. The Weber conversion is a smart idea because the Bosch injection sucked. Go for the 2.0 and avoid the 1.7 and 1.8.
    Problem areas:
    Clutch cables, heat exchangers, vapor lock, hinges on rear deck are weak. Be careful removing Targa top because corners are fragile. Park downhill if possible in order to not have to push start it. Almost impossible to work on at home, so expect to spend a lot for any work it needs.
    Danger, Will Robinson!! You've been warned.

    • @DolleHengst
      @DolleHengst 4 роки тому

      Yeah, i really like the 914, but i've read several German magazines on classic cars, and in the articles regarding this car the 914 experts say it's quite a nightmare to restore if you buy a bad one. Everything welded, not bolted. Everything mechanical hard to reach. Difficult car to work on.
      It makes me respect 914 owners even more, but personally i think i'd buy a 968 in good condition. Costs roughly the same as a fully restored 914 2.0. Both underrated Porsches.

    • @jimohara4796
      @jimohara4796 2 роки тому

      @zimmelbot1 agree with everything you said except the fuel injection comment, unless you're really modifying the engine. There are some great rebuild kits for 914 fuel injection units that address the problem areas and generally speaking FI will run better than carbs, especially in area that have four seasons.

    I owned one of these from 1981 to 1985 - very similar, even down to the Momo steering wheel. One difference I can glimpse: Additional headlights integrated in the bumper - your's has a kind of mesh there - haven't seen that up to now. I made two mistakes with this car: I had it painted white (originally it had been 70ies orange), second mistake: I sold it.

    • @jimohara4796
      @jimohara4796 2 роки тому

      @gletschertroll this car is a 1974, which was a year where Porsche made every option for the 914 "ala carte" - no more packages. This 1974 car appears to have not had driving lights. Contrast that with the 1973 where if you got the 2.0 you got every option except rear window defrost.

They are extremely durable and reliable for the cars of there day and if maintained properly they will get you where you want to go. All your less desirable classics have become desirable. I too remember not even 10 years ago being able to find these for next to nothing in decent shape. Now even pre 70 VW Bugs are skyrocketing in value. I remember saying to myself about 15 years ago these cars look just as good if not better than the 911 of the same years and never quite saw what people wanted more in the 911 aside from a bigger motor I guess and beefier suspension, it’s all relevant and I think people are starting to understand its about the ride in these classic cars, the experience, and not so much about having the top tier experience in the more sought after models.

      the porsche 914 does not benefit from a strut bar. it is only added weight. porsche designed one into the body

      A lot of people prefer not having the passenger side mirrors on old Porsches, BMWs, etc. It is a matter of simplicity and lack of clutter.

      @@mikecooley3361 You haven't "eaten lunch" in a 914 unless you have driven a 300hp v8 like my 76 2.0! Drove those lame 4cyl for 5 years and I could never drive one again ! You cant feel a 914 unless you have 200+ hp. Cornering grip is better in the v8 otherwise you dont even know its back there! The extra 150# in the rear and 150# front(battery/radiator) feels exactly the same except better grip and control.These cars "deserve" 300+hp!!!The 2.0 and 2.0 6 will not show you the potential of this wonderful car! They are awesome with some real power!

      @@gtbarnes11 I disagree, I think v8's in 914's are lame, too heavy and sound like shit! If I was to do a motor swap it would be a Porsche 6, or a Subaru WRX. And yes I have "eaten lunch" in my stock 2.0; a lot of people have cars with more power, but lack driving skills!

      Sean Molloy, Weird that it upsets you that much! This is an old video, I am up to 14 PORSCHE cars owned now, 5 944's and 9 914's; 2 914's currently. Not going to change the way I say PORSCHE because of some internet trolls
