I have an old wall heater that came with my house built in 1978 and an old AC unit with it too (located in the basement). The wall heater is a Berko brand, and it was made from the 70's (if not the 60's), and it has worked like brand new for 40+ years, and still working like brand new. The old AC unit has never gave me trouble since bought in I believe in 1979, and yes it was well built back in these days. We bought the central air unit for the upstairs part of the house in, i believe 2009 or 2010, and it broke a few times. The downstairs unit gave me far less trouble than the new ones. Even my old water heater is still going strong as/is since 1978. I have two Montgomery wards dehumidifiers (one from 1978, and one from 1985) and they still work like brand new today. I bet the old appliances were made better and lasted longer than today's appliances.
You're right, nothing is made to last very long today, with all the computerized bells and whistles, and motherboards, which you are right, you will eventually need customer service after you bought a modern appliance, with or without rebate. You can't think that HE appliances will last you forever, after you got so lucky to have 30+ years on your old appliances. If you have vintage appliances that still work, then there's really no point upgrading to HE appliances. If you must encounter something wrong with any of your old appliances, just get it fixed.
Scratch and dent is junk too, since it may not work correctly or not even work at all, another thing to stay away from at Lowes, even refurbished ones are crap nowadays.
The best and last of the appliances built to last is Speed Queen or one from a secondhand store that sells vintage used appliances.
We also had an issue with an LG washer that would not spin at the highest spin speed, which eventually went away. On March 2020, we had an LG french door fridge with ice maker in 2009. The ice maker failed about two weeks ago. Once the fridge breaks, I will NEVER buy another LG appliance again or any brand sold fat a big box store, like Lowe's, Home Depot, Best Buy or Sams. Instead, I will search online for a secondhand store that repairs and sells vintage major appliances and look for a vintage used fridge from preferably from the 70's or the 80's, and anything goes wrong with it, just having it fixed and will keep the vintage one working as long as I can.
We have two old Montgomery ward dehumidifiers, a 1978 Berko Wall heater in a basement bathroom, an old central air unit in my basement, and vintage wall heaters, and they all still work perfectly after all these years, along with a 1988 Delonghi Incredible Heat Machine heater that still works, along with old Lakewood and Galaxy fans, and old school vintage bell telephones that also give me no trouble at all. We also have an old vintage NuTune central cleaning system that still works perfectly, despite not being used all these years.
My cousin has a vintage Caloric wall oven from 1980s and still works perfectly. She also has a vintage GE electric range from the mid 80's and still works perfect, even after all these years. She has an old vent fan, that also gives her no trouble today, alone with an old oil furnace that still works perfectly today too.

GE appliances - My first new GE refrigerator was DOA! It was WARMER inside than outside. It required repair TWICE in the first week! My second new GE refrigerator was belly up and required replacement at ten years. I replaced the POS GE with an Amana 22 years ago. The Amana is still going strong and has NOT required repair. I wouldn't take a GE appliance as a gift!

Every company has a return policy, NEVER had a problem with Lowe's returns. Lowe's policy is 30 days... ALL retailers are just middle men not the manufacturer, Lowe's supports the sale to the 30 day period the same as most others, they also offer extended protection plans to cover such issues not covered by the manufacturer. I have never had issues using the extended plans when an appliance broke down and to be honest, they went well beyond what was expected by sending out a gift card to procure a new. If you have an issue in that first 30 days, any major retailer should, by the sales agreement with the manufacturer look after the customer and then it's up to the retailer to deal with the manufacturer, but after 30 days the retailer has no obligation as the period has passed and now its all on the manufacturer to come good.
The manufacturer has the one, two and at times 10 year warranty on specific parts and or labour. The retailer does not (unless its a brand made for that retailer like Kenmore for Sear's) so to expect a refund after the 30 day period is unreal. To expect the manufacturer to come through... that is a for sure.

I agree with you for the most part, but Lowe's has a 90 day return policy. Not just a simple 30 day return period. And yes, they also offer a replacement plan that he obviously chose not to buy. None of this guys problems were the fault of Lowe's, and he was clearly lying that he tried to return it 2 months after buying it.

I work at Lowes. Our store policy is 30 days from purchase after that if you will contact the manufacturer they will either send out a repairman or give you a number to Give Lowe's along with with the appliance you wish to return and Lowe's will honor it. Unfortunately we have a high turnover on the front registers and they don't always know the procedure. They have alot to learn in a short period of time.

I learned this a few years ago. I will not buy appliances, small engine equipment like lawn tractors, snowblowers, chainsaw, or electric tools from Lowe’s or HD. The reason they can sell for less is the quality is not the same. Manufacturers substitute plastic parts where they would normally use steel, aluminum, etc. Plus, there is the warranty and service issue.

It’s not just Lowes̴, everything is junk nowadays. My uncle has vintage John Deere tractors and they gave him no trouble to maintain and operate, and was well built. My grandparents had mostly vintage appliances and still working like day one. I would just go to a second hand retailer or market place, or even Craigslist to look for a chainsaw if i needed one.

Why give up? You paid good money for an item that should have lasted 10X longer. Call GE and go higher up. File a complaint with the BBC, If you used a debit or credit charge request the charges be reversed and explain the situation to the bank. File a complaint with your Attorney General. That'll get their attention.

Had same experience with GE warranty on dehumidifier that failed at 10 months. after 2 months of fighting,(cutting cord, taking pics, copy receipts, etc) they said if I bought another GE unit , they would refund the cost of the first one. I didn't need another piece of junk, lost $300., wanted a refund or a free replacement. GE is not the company of old.

Not sure why your video is “DONT BUY GE GARBAGE” Lowe’s has really nothing to do with your series of unfortunate events, every appliance retailer normally has a 30 day return period after that it’s on the manufacturer, Lowe’s did not make your faulty appliances, GE did.

Electronic controls for energy savings has ruined the appliance market. I have used the lowes protection plan with no hassle. Its worth the extra cost if you choose not to buy quality products like speed queen. Most people don't because they dont realize the long term savings of buying quality like people did 50 yrs ago did.

You do realize Speed Queen was made to now use the same crap parts the others use..... right? Until last May, I had 0 people wanting to know if I repaired Speed Queen but within the last 3 months I have had 3 people ask because they are having trouble with their Speed Queen washer. I do not repair anything, I just resell so I'm not sure what the problem with Speed Queen is nowadays..... I'm guessing the actuator or the computer.

Any problems that I've ever experienced at Lowe's that wasn't solved to my client's satisfaction at the local level meant that I wrote what happened and made suggestions to fix problem for clients at the corporate level. They've always responded back and we worked out problems. I've had problems that was out of control of the store manager, but we figured out solution.

I know that. I called G.E. many times because the repair people said the part , Wiring harness and circuit board was on back order. Back order for almost 5 weeks. I blew a gasket. I finally called G.E. for the 9th time and got ahold of a lady there that must have had her head screwed on correctly and the parts arrived in 2 days . So persistence moderatlly payed off. Thanks for the comment.

I purchased a range from Lowes and , same story. It broke the second month we had ut. We had the extended warranty as well as the manufacturers warranty. I called Lowes and they reffered me to an appliance repair store that would do the warranty work. Long story short. The same range broken 2 more times in the first year and was repaired by the same people each time. The same problem each time. The last time the complete wiring system caught fire in the early morning and my smoke detector woke us up ion time for me to shut off the breaker and keep from burning the house down. I called the manufacturer each time the range had to be repaired and it took me at least 3 times each repair to get a person to listen too my problem. the circuit board and complete wiring harness has been replaced 3 times. They said if it happens again they will replace the range. What happens if it catches fire when we are not home? Do they replace my home? Frigidaire Gallery range sucks.

Same here, luckily I was home & caught the issue. I traced the melted insulation wire back to a loose screw which caused enough resistance to almost catch fire. I replaced the hot wire all together & made sure all the wiring was torqued down appropriately & haven't had any issues since.
GE touch screen washer/steamer from Lowe's also went haywire and I've never been so quick to want my old school GE top loader washer back that was more than 20yrs old.
Fancy new tech looks good, but it doesn't mean that it will last the 1st yr of use.
If you can find older outdated appliances being sold, buy it & keep them. Replace the worn parts if they need replacement & I promise you it will out live the competition.

Back in the mid - 1990's, I received a promotional letter from Lowe's which stated that I qualified for a Lowe's credit card with about $1000 in credit. After reading the letter over and over about a dozen or so times, I kept wondering if this was either some way of enticing me to come to spend money at their store, or someone in their credit department screwed up by giving me this card because my credit history wasn't even that good enough to get a credit card with a $250 credit limit at that time. I decided that I would take the letter to the nearest Lowe's store just to see what the associates there would say.
They confirmed the authenticity of the letter, and asked me if I wanted to purchase something that day. I got the biggest TV they had on sale as well as a few other odds and ends, and "paid" for them using my credit line ( didn't have the actual card, but the associates had my card number in the system).
A couple of days later, a corporate Lowe's associate with their credit division said that their was a mistake with their computer as I was never suppose to have qualified for that credit line. The associate told me that I must return the TV and everything else, or they would sue me for fraud. The associate assumed that I filled out some form for the card in a fraudulent manner, but I told her that I NEVER filled one out with Lowe's because I knew that I would never have qualified anyway - so what would have been the point. I also told her that the only form that I did fill out was from the day I went to get my TV, but I only filled out my address and telephone number for the associate to put into the computer. Afterwards, the store associate threw the application in the trash.
I told her to tell their corporate lawyers to sue me, and at the trial, they would have to produce the form that I "fraudulently" filled out to prove their case. Also, I made a photocopy of the letter before getting to Lowe's, and that should Lowe's try to sue me, a copy of the letter would be sent to every local media outlet to make fun of Lowe's credit department for their mistake. I told the associate that every person with a worse credit history than mine would be filling applications for a Lowe's credit card in absurd numbers just to see what would happen.
I never heard from Lowe's corporate again other than in letters advising me of my debt. After about 5 years, they stopped, and none of this reached my credit history probably because Lowe's didn't have a legal leg to support their position should I challenge them in court. Since then, I avoid Lowe's because of what happened back then. I go to either Home Depot, or other local stores, for building supplies and such. Lol. Lowe's - what a joke.

So basically you stole from them and you're proud of it. If you took merchandise and purchased it on credit, morally, legally, and ethically you should pay for what you took home. You are one of the lowest of lows in a civilized society, "OMG, I stole from Lowes and they can't do a damn thing about it." What a shameful claim to fame. Then you "punish" THEM for expecting you to pay for what you took, by shopping at other stores instead of Lowe's. ???? Wtf??? Just because somebody in their company gave you a benefit you were not worthy of does not justify you stealing from them. If you took the items, PAY for them. What makes you think you are entitled to something that does not belong to you. When you took them out on credit, it was with the understanding that they would be paid for over time. You disgust me. Trash always acts like trash. Shame on you.

Lowes will sale appliances and not curry replacement parts, water filter for refrigerator, 6 months old. I brought an expensive kitchen facet, no water directional insert, they sent me to plumbing stores, it was too new no replacement part yet. I brought a HVAC System signed contract for delivery and installation, after they disconnected the gas, I was changing from gas to electric the price went up over $800.00 dollars. no crawl space, no bend over. in the open space garage. I couldn't get a clear explanation, they keep saying because, maybe the change from gas to electric. Well that's what on the contract and you brought the electric unit with you. Well I have a lot of Lowes stories, they are convenient but not worth the hassles.

If this goes on too long the warranty will run out and you will be stuck with a defective air conditioner. You may be forced to accept a replacement to get anything. You could try reporting it to the better business bureau. At this point I think it might be best to take the replacement. They may use the original receipt for warranty on the replacement which means that if it comes to the point that if you accept a replacement and it is close to the end of the warranty you might not have a warranty on the replacement if it is defective. If you take the replacement try it out immediately when you get it to make sure it works. After that you could save it as a replacement for when the one you have fails if you have a place to store it. AC unites change sizes with new models so in a few years a new replacement might not be the same size. If you lack storage space maybe a neighbor would buy it.

I had a similar problem with my 14 month computer from Staples. I did purchase the extended warranty. After talking with Dell they want me to mail back the computer. Ok. Then give me a “gift card” for Staples for the amount of the computer less California taxes 😡. I told them I didn’t want a gift card that forces me to spend my money at Staples. Staples just told me to call a number and everything would be fine. I finally pressed the associate at Dell and was told to hold on to the “ gift card “ for 30 days and I would then receive a check. Just mailed the computer back. It took 7-10 days to get the label. I had to provide box. There’s no customer service from Staples. I purchased $1000.00 worth of goods with this computer. Because my computer blew up I had no access to internet and had to wait for snail mail. When I am done with this project I will have spent many days for a warranty that steals my Sales tax and makes me jump through hoops for a refund for cash that this mystery insurance company provides to Staples and is almost useless.

This has to so with the company that gives a one year warranty on any appliance, not Lowes. Lowes on sells the appliances for a company. If you buy a warranty from Lowes, they will honor it but oy after the one year manufacturer warranty. I just went through this buying a Samsung refrigerator where the dispenser didn't work. I bought a replacement as I'm getting my money refunded. Again, the manufacturer of the product gives the warranty of a year so you must deal with that company.

    • @johnnyteague3407
      @johnnyteague3407 5 років тому +4

Well I hate to inform u but extended warranties are smoke screens in some cases. If you live more than 75 miles from a authorized service center most companies will not come out. When you call the warranty company and tell them this they will waste a week trying to find someone. After that they will mail you a voucher to get a new appliance but you have to take the old one in for exchange. If you think extended warranties mean next day service you are wrong. Those extended warranties have tons of limitations on labor cost so most service companies will not travel more than 100 mile round trip. I speak as a service tech. Also there are certain brands to avoid especially GE. Others are bosch Samsung and LG. In fact I have warranty call for a bosch dishwasher part that will take 2 to 4 weeks to get. So in closing extended warranties sound good but if you can live without the appliance for 2 weeks or longer in some cases good for you. One last case had a Samsung washer 6 months old. Waited 5 months for parts. The customer tried to use the extended warranty and they said no because it had a 1 year factory warranty. She complained to Samsung and all they offered was to wait on the part or take a 300.00 voucher toward a new 700.00 washer. In her case I keep refurbished washers to loan to clients because I know how some companies hide behind their warranties instead of servicing them.

    • @lenmil8421
      @lenmil8421 Рік тому

Extended warranties are a scam. Our parents and grandparents back in the day never bought extended warranties on appliances. They paid one price plugged them in and enjoyed them for 25-30 years- much longer than a month. It's not like that today companies want to nickel, dime, and $1000 you anyway they can. Extended warranties mean a service tech will come out to your house over and over again, replace part after part after part Until giving up and maybe you'll get a discount voucher For your next cheap expensive headache.

I had all ne GE appliances when I built my house. The only GE product that hasn't crapped out is the gas stove. That's only because it can't really die.
My GE microwave would just start whenever it wanted. I used to keep a bowl of water in it to keep it from burning out. I did some research and found out lots of them did this. GE says to unplug it for 24 hours to "reset" it. I tried it and it worked, For about a week.
My GE refrigerator would not stop making water (apparently that's what ice is to them) I disconnected the water line and I still had water running through the freezer. I emptied it out and at the bottom of the freezer at the back there was a ziplock bag of walnuts. It was melted to the back of the freezer. Melted inside of a freezer. The back of the freezer was also brown from the heat. Then the freezer turned into warm storage. Their answer was "it's probably best to buy a new unit". I did. A Samsung, and the microwave is also not a GE.
My GE clothes dryer just quit working. It was replaced with a Maytag.

They will give you the money as credit to your card. The, the store has 90 days to counter the credit. They almost never do. I've done this several times with no problems. ALSO, the people at the credit card company told me if a refund was promised but it's been more than 15 days and no refund, call them and they will give you your refund. The person told us that these appliances were “…at least, a month out” and we need to talk with the sales person who sold us the appliances.
The sales person is supposed to call us…..we are waiting.
We made this purchase because Lowe’s showed stock on-line and we verified this with the sales person who saw stock on his computer…plenty of stock.

I'm here to say that I don't think it matters in the least as to "where it was built". The basic issues around what we equate to quality (performance, durability) lies in the design of the components. All appliance makers need to design products that the public desires, while being able to market them at a profit. Most shoppers today are not like your grandfather. Gramps might still have scars from the depression where anything you owned HAD to last, because he didn't have the money to buy a new one. That old fridge of his that is still chugging along in the garage is likely very basic in style and capacity, and likely only cost $300-$400 in todays dollars. Todays modern fridge selling price usually goes out the door for $1500 or more. I doubt Gramps would ever consider spending that kind of money on a fridge!
So how do appliance manufactures get seemingly savvy consumers to pony up 3 times what Gramps would pay? In marketing terms, fashion, convenience, and price are what sells, not durability. Let's face it, who doesn't want a crown jewel of a fridge highlighting their kitchen? How many 30-40 year old homeowners can accept a fridge as basic as the "Gramps" model saying to the world, "we haven't arrived"? Convenience and price is where retailers like Lowes comes in. Large showrooms to display a very wide selection from basic to "sky is the limit". Special so-called "sale pricing", zero percent financing on your Lowes card, and of course, free delivery and haul-off. Bada-boom, bada-bing!
And of course to enhance the profit and make them more competitive, manufactures keep squeezing their parts suppliers to provide cheaper components that tend to fail sooner. They all put some kind of warrantee on their product, but as you can see when reading comments like those here, the warrantee is usually worth nothing when challenged. Sorry.
This is why manufacturers warrantees are increasingly being replaced by liberal limited time return policies like Amazon. In Amazon's case, the shopper typically has 30-days to accept the item. After that, you are on your own. Seems to work pretty well for Amazon.
When it comes to appliances, I would recommend Costco or Sam's. At least Costco gives you 90-days to return a major appliance w/o question.
By the way, can anyone name an "American-built" appliance these days, that gives the customer a quality, durable product? If there is one, how do they compete w/o resorting to the cost saving methods of their compitition?
