    Thank you so much. Diagnosed 31 years ago and in my mid 50's. Was near dying when the Proteasse Inhibitors came out in 1996, turned everything around. These conversations are needed so badly. The work you are doing is extremely important. Accessing and sharing information. Just like the early days Jeff was talking about at groups .. here at NYC Gay Center. I remember early Act Up meetings. People were sharing research, experimental drugs, alternative treatments, etc. This is the modern version of that work.

      Wow, thank you for the comment. And thanks for sharing some of your story! I'm happy to hear you appreciate the content; it motivates me to keep going if/whenever I doubt its significance. And creating a communal space that enriches our community is everything I could strive for; long ways to go yet but that's the goal.

      @@RaifDerrazi I left you a messaged you on Instagram, but realized you see these comments first. I only recently found your channel in my recommendations. You've probably watched it, but the documentary How To Survive A Plague brought me back to the early days of Act Up at the Gay Center and how they changed everything. I recommend it to anyone to learn the history of how we got to today.

      @@danieldominiak647 My health slowly came back over 5-8 years to a new normal. Undetectable, good energy, living a normal life. My issues now are middle age concerns, and things aching, not AIDS. Being sick seems like a lifetime ago. I don't even get colds very often. I use to feel stigmatized and traumatized by a death sentence, after just living my life and not dying . . . still here to tell the story . . . the stigma and trauma that I once felt fell away. . . I couldn't tell you when the trauma fell away. I know many people have different experiences and people are still dying, so I know that I am a very blessed man and thankful for every day the eyes open. Raif's focus on HIV and aging is a big topic for me going forward.

    41:28 'Somebody who was on PrEP and had a lapse and got HIV, started on treatment right away before T cells dropped' OMG This is exactly what happened to me! I was on PrEP, got a bit careless and that was enought to catch HIV. This happened three months ago, thank God I got immediate medical help and I've been on ART daily for the past two months.

The depth of your interview is very effective in teaching all of us not only a bit of history but also provides a greater understanding that we cannot get anywhere else. Your sincerity in all these interviews is what truly makes them so effective. Thanks again and looking forward to more of the same. Cheers and stay healthy.

    Thank you so much for posting... I've been living with HIV about 22 years by my estimate - officially diagnosed 2003 and i gotta say the comments about the psycho-social aspect of this is truly important still... I mean i go to the gym everyday I work full-time as a Registered Nurse my CD4 count is great as is my viral count so on paper everyone think ah well he's fine but Ive just been told i need a new hip and when i tell people i get stares like but you're way to young etc etc they don't realize my body is now riddled with arthritis...anyway my point being that yep I'm closing in on 50 in a couple of years and already Im going through some things i wouldn't have expected until my early 60's

    This is one of those conversations that are so difficult to find answers to. Everyone says that we can live a normal lifespan, and that may be true, but is such a complex question. Family history with Illnesses, our diets, physical activity, and of course our pill adherence. So my question is; Which are the general deseases that are most common in the HIV+ aging community? At my clinic the most I get screened for Cancers all the time.

    I've been positive for the last 5 years and I have been doing fairly well. My biggest issue is my weight. I'm 6'2" but I constantly fluctuate between 155 - 175. I heard he mentioned he was prescribed a steroid that helped him gain 30 lbs in about 6 weeks. What was that called?

      Hi! Positive for 20+ years now - being a tad flippant, I wish I had your challenge as I'm the opposite! After starting ARV's I gained weight and find it hard to drop. I do know that some HIV combination therapies can cause weight gain - maybe worth investigating whether you could change to such a combination. A nutritionist would suggest increasing the number and frequency of meals during the day. Raif's suggestion of the inclusion of a high caloric protein & carb drink would also help .... definitely, if you access some professional help, I'd make that a priority.

    Can you speak about how the medication 💊 also ruins your body and make some people feeling terrible with hiv.
    I’ve had so many friends who reach out to me and told me they are on a medication called Atripla that makes them feeling worst than before their diagnosis 😢
    Constantly being hospitalized for something that should be helping them feel better.

    • @RaifDerrazi
      @RaifDerrazi  11 місяців тому +2

      Atripla is an older medication that has been known to cause more side effects. I suggest your friends talk to their healthcare providers about switching to something else if they’re struggling

    • @DreBrian
      @DreBrian 11 місяців тому +2

      @@RaifDerraziit’s tough. My friends are from the Caribbean. We don’t have the leading medications that are available in first world countries like the USA 🇺🇸. Atripla is the number one drug in the Caribbean. It’s sad and unfortunate to know it cost so much side effects and yet still in 2023 it’s being used . 😢
      I feel so bad for my friends cause I’ve seen how much it have affected them and there’s nothing they can do because they are told to keep taking it everyday.
      This is why many stop taking their medication 💊 because it seems like no one cares how they feel. They were doing much better prior to their diagnosis and to know they are feeling worst being in care breaks my heart.

    • @arnabsingha114
      @arnabsingha114 11 місяців тому

      Artipla can cause headaches in morning and vivid dreams at night can make you drowsy. But that doesn’t happen to everyone, I took that drug for 1 year and didn’t have much problems except headaches in morning. I suggest please take NAC (acetyle cystine) supplements, it will help manage your symptoms.

      Long term use 25+ years can cause liver stenosis with older drugs. Get a echo liver scan for enlarged liver and fibro scan a blood test bio marker for fibrogenisis. Mitachondral damage can cause metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, low T, hypothyroidism. The low insulin can cause more fat. Egrifta growth hormone helps as well as well as testosterone Cyperonate. The acumulative effects over decades as you reach 65 and older require more monitoring by your specialist. Losing 10% of your body fat with triglyceride and cholestrol lowering statins or vacepa omega 3 prescriptions help. There are also drugs for insulin sensitivity. I am not a medical worker so always ask your doctor first.

    I just want to say something, I think it should be prescribed along with ARV meds that supplement like NAC and Glycine should be taken by everyone living with HIV. It can really slow down rapid aging and improve metabolic health,improve lots of bio markers and there are dedicated research on hiv people using these supplements. Many people doesn’t not know this. Please spread awareness about GLYNAC supplementation. I am personally benefited from this.
